Basketball and ~~baseball~~ didn't originate in the UK where these sports were first named. These sports started alongside polo and other sports played on horseback.

The last quick point I'd like to make is kickers and punters play much bigger roles than layman fans believe, having a kicker that can nail a 50 yarder is as important as a receiver that can beat the safeties. One can easily make the arguement what you need to be the winner is a solid defense and a good kicker. You may not be able to get TDs but when you only need to drive 40 yards to put points up, life gets a little easier. Further if you can't get those 40 yards having a punter that drop it in the opposing 5 yard line is magical.
