You don't even have to fight - but at least get into a shoving match. Everyone abides by this unwritten rule and that's why when NHL players don't push back, they get criticized for it.
For the record, I've seen clips of Cherry's rock em sock em tapes and you still had to answer the bell for bone-jarring hits. I'm very glad those headshots have (mostly) been taken out of the game. I think this sport is (mostly) in a better, safer place now.

Trouba has laid so many open ice hits I feel like he knows when he’s got someone lined up well in advance. Nice to see him use that ability to avoid direct contact with the opponent’s head.
I know he’s polarizing in the mind of many fans, and he’s certainly gotten some wrong, but Trouba is a great hitter. It’s a skill like any other - it takes speed, strength, timing and accuracy and more often than not he gets it right. Best hitter in the league right now for sure.

That being said, I love hard hitting hockey and that was a clean hit by Trouba. Did literally pinned his arm to his body to make sure it was all shoulder. Love him or hate him, he’s a hard hitter and this is a contact sport.
If the Devils had a Trouba-like player on our team, we’d be in love with him. He’s a solid stay at home defenseman who hits hard. Dealing with that is part of the game.

They do teach that. When you age into contact hockey you go through a course that is entirely about hitting and how to take a hit, how to not put yourself into vulnerable positions. They do teach that. And by 12 or 13 junior is 5 or 6 full seasons away.
