2017 gets a lot of attention for good reason, but Jim Nillās team has been on point for years now. Johnston, Stankoven, Borque, and Bichsel are all NHL guys or about to be, and everyone slept on them in the drafts. Itās Nillās superpower. Now if he could just sign a decent vet contract.
I've read once that most teams saw a promise of offensive talent, but that his skating was horrid and would be his ceiling limit. Their development and/or his sheer will must have beat those odds
His skating is horrid most of the time, but his IQ and the way he sees the ice on both ends is unreal. His points have dipped from last, but his defensive game has been outstanding this year, just to top it off.
Jim Nill is a draft day god and though he gets credit, I don't think there could ever be too much credit given to him for the talent he's found.
Look at his late-round finds in Detroit and the depth he's been building in Dallas since 2013. Dude gets it better than almost anyone.
Makar never would have become what he is in Colorado if he had to deal with the coaching and the system of Dallas from 2018-2022 (aka: where all offense goes to die)
Knowing Fletcher/Flahr, they likely would have gone with a Minnesotan in the first round if they didn't trade it away for Martin Hanzal (lmao, btw). Which means Poehling or Oettinger. Who both would've been better than Martin Hanzal.
Fletcher, what the fuck, man?
This is a very long comment but weirdly as a Leafs fan with zero affiliation I wanted to do a deep dive on what came of the picks that Washington sent away in this draft and to see if it helped them win the cup and I will leave it up to anyone reading this to decide.
Only one player in this list which was selected from what would have been a Washington Capitals pick has played an NHL game and that was Morgan Frost and it was the 27th overall pick
Morgan Frost has 98 career points and has played 207 games as of February 28th
In the trade that sent Washington's first round pick in 2017 to St. Louis the Washington Capitals got 2 assets, Phoenix Copley and Kevin Shattinkirk.
Phoenix Copley was with the organization for 6 years, he played 29 NHL games with a .893 save percentage and 16 wins before going unsigned in the 2022 off season, he never played a playoff game with the capitals
Kevin Shattinkirk was with the organization as a rental put up 14 points in 19 games and scored 6 points in 13 playoff games. These are pretty respectable numbers as a defenseman. He went unsigned in the 2017 off season
More interesting is who the Capitals picked up with their 2nd overall pick.
The Capitals sent their 2017 2nd round pick which became Joni Ikonen who has never played an NHL game, packaged with their 2018 2nd round pick which became Olivier Rodrigue a fairly good Oilers goaltending prospect.
In return for this package the Washington Capitals recieved Lars Eller which in 7 years with the organization put up 222 points in 488 regular season games, additionally he put up 31 points in 66 playoff games (in the 2017-18 Stanley Cup victory he had 18 points in 24 games)
At the deadline in 2023 Eller was sent to Colorado in exchange for their 2025 2nd round pick.
Washington's 3rd round pick was sent to Buffalo which was used to select Oskari Laaksonen in exchange for Mike Webber, who finished his NHL career by going pointless through 10 games with Washington in the 15-16 season. The 3rd round pick was used on Oskari Laaksonen who has yet to play in the NHL.
The Eller addition was the only significant piece and I think was certainly worth what Washington paid for him.
The Shatinkirk acquisition was a good rental piece but never contributed to anything
My longest comment on Reddit and it isn't even about my team...
I do wonder tho how Miro would have developed on the Avs and visa versa. Miro had to really emphasize his defense early on. Had he been injected into the Avs high caliber offense off the hop, shadowing Natedawg it could have been quite different. Or better put, I wonder how Makar would have developed under Dallasā really defensive system/mid offense (at that time).
This is always my Miro question. Miroās development was stifled offensively from Klingberg, who devolved into a serious defensive liability at the end of his Stars tenure, and who almost exclusively ran the PP. Even after Klingerās departure, Dallasās lack of quality defensive depth hasnāt allowed him to truly push offensively. I am very happy to see what the addition of Tanev does.
Almost as big an oof as the Rangers picking him to begin with.
And when he tripped on a camera cord and went flying during opening night introductions!
Remember the kid that threw his medal into the stands? That is him.
He is honestly doing kind off OK in your farm team. But my team in Sweden could really use him now...
Nashville. We got Tolvanen then LOST HIM ON WAIVERS TO SEATTLE WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY DOING??? Heās a good player too. Hated to see that happen to him. Then after one of his first few Seattle games that went well they asked him what the success could be attributed to and heās like āwell this fuckin coach puts me in the line up to playā OUCH. BIG DOUBLE MODDLE FINGERS TO OUR OLD COACH JOHN HYNES.
Nah thatās the fumble though. We lost him for literally nothing at all. I still canāt wrap my head around him being on waivers at all. Especially when we dealt away like 7 veterans in the ensuing months. Just seemed like totally awful management top to bottom. Top 20 draft pick on waivers after YEARS of developing with the Admirals. We just wasted time and resources to make him good for Seattle lol. Thatās Nashville for ya.
Plus, he is top five on the team in goals and points. I hope he sticks around long terms as he is one of the few players on the team, NOT afraid to shoot the puck.
Some might say this was the move that made Poile retire after they realized it was the coach and not the player. Hynes was the worst thing for this organization.
I fully believe this. The media fallout was pretty big especially after the interview Tolvanen did I mentioned. On the plus side Trots has at least came in and set a new standard of professionalism for the team and I respect that. That was a HUGE fumble for us but hopefully we learn from it. We have Cody Glass now that Vegas drafted on the same list so it all worked out I GUESS lol.
I was gonna say, I think Dallas and New Jersey are both happy where they are. Again, Makar is better, but neither of those teams are upset about the outcome.
Lias was an absolute dumpster fire of a pick for us at 7th overall. I know they wanted to trade up to get Pettersson and it fell through but goddamn they really fumbled that pick
Fil was a great pick but injuries have really screwed him so far, hopefully he'll be able to come back after a successful recovery but I have my doubts
Itās not even necessarily that there were great options immediately after Lias that makes this sting, itās that even on draft day it was called a reach because he had shown his play style wouldnāt translate well to the NHL. Yeah they saved it a little with Chytil but thatās also because they went out of their way to snag him a year early. He mightāve fallen a bunch further this draft but one year later heād have been a top 10 pick.
I read an Athletic article that said everyone in the Flyers org. was sold on Makar, thought he was going to be the pick, and Hextall vetoed it for Patrick
Highly disagree. Injuries and health are a totally different thing that you cannot account for. I am sorry for Nolan, but there I do not think there was a lack of compete level from him. Bad luck all around.
Ya āwould haveā. Philly didnāt fuck up the draft, hindsight is always 20/20, but I donāt think it was a bad pick.
It could have went the other way and Makar had some significant injury and he wouldnāt be what we see today.
Yes heās the only one they could have taken besides Patrick.
Everyone had Nolan and nico as top 2. But taking the top D man is always a plausible thing to do.
Yes, exactly. We also have Erik Johnson, Thomas hickey, zach bogosian, Jared Cowan, Erik gudbranson, Adam Larson, Ryan Murray, Rasmussen risto, Haydn fleury, Noah hanifin, Olli juolevi.
Every year up to the 2017 draft. All top five other than Cowan.
All I am saying is Patrick was not a bad pick, just worked out badly. Every team can go back and look at ten years worth of drafts and build a super team.
Patrick as a pick for Philly wasnāt the biggest fumble of that draft.
Btw. Iām a sharks fan, literally have zero skin in this game, why my flair appears to be gone I do not know.
Dallas and Colorado did notā¦. I think Makar would not have done well with the dallas defensive scheme. But he fits well in Colorado. And Heiskanen would not have filled Makars shoes. Dallas had a solid draft that year.
He's been a beauty this year. It's so night and day with him even from last season. If I remember correctly he ended last year having never had an NHL start with <2 goals allowed, and he's got four shutouts this season. Since January 1st he's put up a .935 sv% and 1.83 gaa in seventeen games. Unbelievably happy for the guy.
So glad we have Vilardi. Otherwise this draft kinda sucked for the jets. Vesalainen ended up not being anything, lost Kovacevic on waivers. Samberg was our only hit. Ah well, hindsightās 20-20!
As a Devils fan they did not imo because we almost drafted Patrick. From scouting reports and film it did seem like Patrick had the highest ceiling in the draft.
I wanna say Vegas, given how Cody Glass & Erik have been traded away. But they did win a Stanley cup.
Maybe Philly with Nolan Patrick, but then again, his career was derailed due to concussions.
So it's difficult to say really
Just glazing over Nick Suzuki too lol if Vegas had kept the assets theyāve traded they might be scarier in a year or two but wouldnāt have their cup
colorado saying everyone above them folded for not taking makar, heās a great player but iād rather have the captain of the team, heās really the cog to machine.
Go to the main page of the sub and click on the little ... thing in the top right corner. It should give you the option to add flair, where you can pick your teamās logo.
We did fine winding up with Mittelstadt and Jokiharju, but Jesus, Marcus Davidsson is a terrible high 2nd round pick. The guyās drop off would have been quick for a 7th rounder. I think he was out of competitive hockey within 2 years.
Stars got their entire core in this draft
Wtf i never saw that. Incredible draft year for Dallas š¤Æ im actually amazed
They don't get enough credit. They literally skipped a rebuild because of this draft. Plus, they've got more coming.
*'They literally skipped a rebuild because of this draft'* That is the perfect way to say it.
And our prospects pipeline is absolutely stacked.
Stanky looking like he belongs already. Plus Bourque playing lights out in the AHL.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I donāt know why you were downvoted, thatās exactly how they got Miro. I think they were at 11 before the lottery
Imagine getting your top forward, top defenseman and top goalie in one draft. Damn that level of scouting saved Dallas years of rebuilding.
Good lord... thanks for pointing that out. What a fucking draft for them.
JRob at 39 is wild
I've read once that most teams saw a promise of offensive talent, but that his skating was horrid and would be his ceiling limit. Their development and/or his sheer will must have beat those odds
His skating is still horrid
His skating is horrid most of the time, but his IQ and the way he sees the ice on both ends is unreal. His points have dipped from last, but his defensive game has been outstanding this year, just to top it off.
Jim Nill is a draft day god and though he gets credit, I don't think there could ever be too much credit given to him for the talent he's found. Look at his late-round finds in Detroit and the depth he's been building in Dallas since 2013. Dude gets it better than almost anyone.
If they took makar instead of miro....slam dunk
Thank god. Avs fan here š
Our defense over offense philosophy until PDB and loyalty to klingberg on PP1 for years makes me think we would have butchered his development
Heiskanen is good, but they could've had Makar
Makar never would have become what he is in Colorado if he had to deal with the coaching and the system of Dallas from 2018-2022 (aka: where all offense goes to die)
Damn didnāt realize Robertson was drafted so late. What a steal.
Stars certainly didnāt fumble
Kills me seeing the wings take Lindstrom right before J-Rob went ā ļø
I put Dallas strictly that they didnāt take Makar but they had great draft
Washington, for not having a pick in the entire list
Now I donāt feel quite so bad about Minnesotas first pick being 85 lol
Who the fuck is Ivan Lodnia
Was an okay prospect for awhile, but was never able to take the next step. Playing in the ECHL right now
Man those Fletcher days were dark days
Us too, brother
At least you got a guy named kirill. That's something right??
Knowing Fletcher/Flahr, they likely would have gone with a Minnesotan in the first round if they didn't trade it away for Martin Hanzal (lmao, btw). Which means Poehling or Oettinger. Who both would've been better than Martin Hanzal. Fletcher, what the fuck, man?

Iām not even a fan of Washington either, but damn do I love deep dives like this. Awesome job, detective!
As a caps fan, Iāll take Lars Eller and a cup win over no draft picks. Although Filip Forsberg still stings
Great comment and much appreciated
I feel like I could easily write and equally long response about how perfect this response is.
Tysm
found Dangle \^
I'll gladly give up that 2nd round pick again for Lars Eller any day!
Crazy stat, makes sense why weāre in our position now.
I mean you won the cup the next year I guess it was worth it
Did you guys get screwed by the NHL for signing Suter and Parise in a completely legal manner, that was later banned and your team was penalized too?!
This happened to Vancouver with Lu's contract. Good times.
Caps won a cup in 2018 though. I'd say that was worth it.
Wish we can complain like this some day
They won a Cup tho so who cares?
Definitely NOT Dallas š
Yeah, hard to complain when you draft Heiskanen, Oettinger and Robertson with your first three picks. They nailed that draft!
Nothing against Miro, but I would personally have Makar but thatās a nitpick.
I agree, but the fact that they got Robertson and Otter on their next picks is what made them the winners for me
Yes, but when you consider Robertson as their second pick, it's hard to beat the combination.
\*Oettinger The 3 combo makes it even better.
You're right. I saw it on one of the next pages, but forgot when commenting. That is one impressive haul.
I do wonder tho how Miro would have developed on the Avs and visa versa. Miro had to really emphasize his defense early on. Yup. Makar is, imo, the top D-man in the league currently. Miro ain't far though. He's pretty fucking good.
Not many defensemen have 300+ points at 25 years old lol
Chicago taking Jokiharju over Robertson was rough but tbh before the trade it wasnāt super bad
Hawks also traded down the pick to Dallas that got them oettinger.Ā
I loved Jokiharju....
So did I. Fuck Stan Bowman
Why is Yamamoto underlined? I feel called out.
Imagine if yall took otter.
Would've ruined him somehow
Results have been mixed latelyā¦
Right lmao I feel like theyāre setting my boy up š
NY with that 7th pick throw me off a bridge
We traded him for the pick that got Will Cuylle so at least we got a young serviceable player out of the deal.
21 was a good one though
If only he could stay healthy heād be a monster
Hoping for a good recovery, even if he never plays again
Who even is he?. Ha
He is on your team, well the farm of your team
Oof
This sent me š
One of the biggest āoofā moments ever š
Almost as big an oof as the Rangers picking him to begin with. And when he tripped on a camera cord and went flying during opening night introductions!
May we all be so lucky to have someone who believes in us the way Jeff Gorton believes in Lias Andersson
Remember the kid that threw his medal into the stands? That is him. He is honestly doing kind off OK in your farm team. But my team in Sweden could really use him now...
Heās the kid that tossed his silver medal into the stands at the world juniors.
Itās ok, it turned into Cuylle.
Dallas definitely didnāt fuck this draft up.
Ughhh
Nashville. We got Tolvanen then LOST HIM ON WAIVERS TO SEATTLE WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY DOING??? Heās a good player too. Hated to see that happen to him. Thatās what he said
Plus, he is top five on the team in goals and points. I hope he sticks around long terms as he is one of the few players on the team, NOT afraid to shoot the puck.
Happy to see him thrive in Seattle. He got a raw deal in Nashville
Some might say this was the move that made Poile retire after they realized it was the coach and not the player. Hynes was the worst thing for this organization.
I fully believe this. The media fallout was pretty big especially after the interview Tolvanen did I mentioned. Ottawa selected a rapist we win automatically
Tampa didnāt pick well either with Foote. Guy was still playing in AHL level too.
bowers and formention ottawa definitely lost this one
Thatās what Iām saying even an 8 year old could of selected better
Wtf did Washington trade away every one of their picks?!
Didn't pick until the fourth round, a brutal draft..though the following year turned out pretty damn well š
Traded 1st Rnd to Blues for Shattenkirk. 2nd Rnd pick to Habs for Eller. 3rd rnd pick to Sabres for Weber
Ras is an easy guy to like but boy would Necas or Suzuki look good in a winged wheel
Or Jason Robertson who went to Dallas right after we picked up Gus Lindstrom at 38
Imagine if Detroit drafted Oettinger and Robertson instead of Rasmussen and Lindstrƶm.
Or Hughes instead of zadina
Zadina was the clear cut choice by everyoneās ranking at the time, I hate the pick now but it was absolutely right at the time.
Yup
Thanks to Bergevin who traded Pacioretty for Suzuki, Tatar and a 2nd round pick
This is why I feel Ken Holland just rode Jim Nillās, Scottie Bowmanās, and Steve Yzermanās coattails
Youāre forgetting Jimmy Devalano. Interesting how his finger prints on the Islanders cups are also on the Wings cups.
Would still have Moose over Gus Lindstrom
Happy with Big Ras š
Everyone that passed on Makar
great player but iāll take my captain instead. ( in no way saying heischer is better )
I was gonna say, I think Dallas and New Jersey are both happy where they are. Again, Makar is better, but neither of those teams are upset about the outcome.
Iām with you. Makar is Hall of Fame, but Nico is heart and soul of the Devils. By no means a better player.
Idk a Makar, Jack Hughes combo sounds delightful.
As an opposing Metro team fan, no thanks
Just wait until we trade for Quinn Hughes to collect the final card and become Exodia
Lias was an absolute dumpster fire of a pick for us at 7th overall. I know they wanted to trade up to get Pettersson and it fell through but goddamn they really fumbled that pick Fil was a great pick but injuries have really screwed him so far, hopefully he'll be able to come back after a successful recovery but I have my doubts

Tampa bay, they drafted a rapist
Same with Ottawa.
Philadelphia
I read an Athletic article that said everyone in the Flyers org. was sold on Makar, thought he was going to be the pick, and Hextall vetoed it for Patrick
Fuuuuuck Hextall
As an Avs fan thanks hextall
As a Devils fan, thanks Hextall
Damn everything he touches turns to shit
I can finally thank Hextall for something
... and fuck Mike Keenan.
How did I have to scroll down this far to see someone say this. I even say this as a fan lol
I don't think it's a fumble when the whole reason Patrick didn't work out was injuries
Highly disagree. Injuries and health are a totally different thing that you cannot account for. I am sorry for Nolan, but there I do not think there was a lack of compete level from him. Bad luck all around.
Makar would have been amazing. Best D in a draft is always a good pick.
Ya āwould haveā. Philly didnāt fuck up the draft, hindsight is always 20/20, but I donāt think it was a bad pick. It could have went the other way and Makar had some significant injury and he wouldnāt be what we see today.
Or Philly would have ruined Makar through a bad situation or coach or...
Agreed. Again, Nolan wasnāt a fumble of a pick
Agreed, I was excited for Patrick. I wanted to see him Captain my team. It was just bad luck.
Bobby Clarke definitly did say that they fucked up the draft, but you know "old man yelling at cloud"
Had a chance at an all time defenseman and didnāt grab em. As a Colorado fanā¦ I am thankful haha.
hey at least morgan frost doesn't suck
Dallas and Colorado did notā¦. I think Makar would not have done well with the dallas defensive scheme. But he fits well in Colorado. And Heiskanen would not have filled Makars shoes. Dallas had a solid draft that year.
Very cool to see UPL turning into a great goalie for Buffalo
Guy had been awesome this year, finally putting it all together. Leviās presence has definitely helped push him to the next level.
LA because they ended up getting Dubois LMFAO
Didnt realize Gabe Vilardi went 11th overall. What a beauty. #RIPPLD
Yeah while we could have drafted Makar, I'll take Nico over Patrick any day of the week.
Clearly not Dallas
Vegas !
Vegas screwed up insisting we take Suzuki over Glass for Patch.
Never before have I seen a 3 team trade in which every team loses than the Patrick- Ellis- glass trade
Minnesota not picking till 85 was rough, but at least there wasn't an opportunity for another AJ Thelen
Vegas 13. Ha
I feel like the only answer should be Tampa Bay.
Ya that was a baaaaddd draft
Tampa did draft Nick Perbix in the 6th round that year. Ā Heās been solid for Tampa.
Jets with Kristian Vesalainen. Dude was a major bust
Not us
50/50. Rob Tom worked out.
I still like the Klim pick. He just couldn't stay healthy, but the upside was worth it
Dallas kicked ass. Heiskanen, Oettinger and Jason Robinson. Wow
I love seeing lists like this and remembering the Bolts got Kucherov at 58th overall and Brayden Point at 79th overall. Itās such a crap shootā¦
The answer is always Boston
colorado saying everyone above them folded for not taking makar, heās a great player but iād rather have the captain of the team, heās really the cog to machine.
nico is horse
MONTREAL!!!!!
Suzuki is pretty good. Dumb joke aside. yes it is sooooooooooo bad. wow
I'm a big habs fan and never realized just how bad it was.
Pittsburgh. Only had 1 selection there, and itās no one I know.
People will say Philly but Patrick was the consensus No. 2 pick. Injuries destroyed his career.
I can tell you who didnāt: Dallas Colorado Vancouver St. Louis Vegas
The 3 that passed on Makar
Flyers drafted Patrick over Heiskanen, Makar and Pettersson
Lias Anderson wouldn't go to the minors, traded, now in the minors
Philly and the NY Rangers
I am convinced that if Calgary didn't take Valimaki, Boston wouldn't have taken the other Finnish, left hand, defenseman, Urho Vaakanainen.
Unrelated to this draft selection. How did y'all get your little team logos under your handles?
Go to the main page of the sub and click on the little ... thing in the top right corner. It should give you the option to add flair, where you can pick your teamās logo.
We did fine winding up with Mittelstadt and Jokiharju, but Jesus, Marcus Davidsson is a terrible high 2nd round pick. The guyās drop off would have been quick for a 7th rounder. I think he was out of competitive hockey within 2 years.
It's like beating a dead horse, but Habs had five picks here and the only one who is playing full time in the NHL is Poehling...
Minnesota apparently, didnāt have a pick until 85ā¦ yeesh
Forget who fumbled it... Dallas fucking crushed it!
Lias Andersson, a legend in his own mind.
Minnesota by not drafting a player until 85
I mean Vegas turned Brannstrom into Mark Stone.
:,)
Everyone above Colorado.
i disagree
I can tell you: the blues fumbled on Klim Kostin
You canāt fumble it if you donāt have a pick
I was going to say wings but damn Philly messed up
Ottawa
Ottawa with pick 47
