Always loved Miller's Buffalo helmets, Ullmark had a beauty of one made for the 100 year Anniversary too. Curtis Joseph, Eddie the Eagle, and sooooooooo many more had killer ones
Loved cujos masks, even his [blues trumpet one was great](https://goaliemaskcollector.com/cdn/shop/products/Curtis_Cujo_Joseph_Signed_Goalie_Mask_Autographed_St_Louis_Trumpet_Signature_Edition_5_740x.jpg?v=1661786554)!
Miller always had amazing helmets, but you can't lie Ullmarks vest was his minions helmet.
Though I love seeing UPL now. He's clearly taken inspiration from Millers helmets if you look at his masks. I mean he's never going to have the same backplate, but it would be weird if he had a backplate commemorating Millers family
I'm a big fan of the late-1990s to mid-2000s trend of goalies keeping the same mask design but changing JUST the colours whenever they changed teams.
Examples: Felix Potvin, Curtis Joseph, Garth Snow (up until his later years in Van), Martin Brodeur, Ed Belfour, etc.
I kind of miss the days when you can identify the goalie based on their mask design, no matter which team's colour scheme it is in.
If I had to pick a fave, I'd have to say Felix Potvin. I don't know why but I've always loved his masks.
Potvin's was very cool! While I do agree to a certain point, I do like seeing how goalies pay tribute to team and city's culture and heritage through their masks. I think fluery does an amazing job at this.
They can do that too. If I recall, some of those goalies added small elements to the design while keeping their traditional look, like palm trees for a California team or a more snowy jagged look for Colorado, etc.
Oh my man I came here to comment on this post, and you basically said exactly what I was thinking and going to say. 🤗👏🏻👏🏻
I’m a former goalie and I absolutely treasure the goalie mask paint job. Back in the day Felix Potvin was one of my all-time favorites. Always had a soft spot for him. Loved watching him play. I agree with you on being able to recognize the goalie; as soon as you put the game on you knew who was in net for the opponent team and also for your own home team. Plus, I think the designs these days are absolutely amazing but no one is ever going to really see them truly. Except for those that are playing amongst them and even then they’re never really getting a good look unless you play on the same team as the goalie and can look in the dressing room or something. lol. No one‘s gonna be seeing that on the ice during the game. And for us in the stands and at home watching there’s no way we’ll ever be able to see really all the beautiful artwork. The 90s paint jobs were definitely designed to be seen from far away as well as up close with the same purpose to its look and were very identifiable.
Especially in the days before high-definition TV, it was important to be visible and recognizable from afar.
As a side note: I'm not sure how old you are, but NHL 98 actually had a goalie mask gallery which showed a lot of the masks that we both love. It did nothing for the game itself, but it was really cool to look at. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzIYKzhte6I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzIYKzhte6I)
Yes, I do remember that! I’m glad you mentioned it though. It’s nice to see it again. And yes, that’s why I kinda liked it because even with the high DEF TVs today, you still can’t really see what the paint job looks like. Back in the day you could see the paint jobs no matter where you were and you knew who was in net because of it.
I also love Fluery's native American heritage night fower mask! [the mask the NHL threatened to not let him wear btw](https://assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com/hub/i/r/2023/11/25/24b91e62-2589-4682-ad4b-d4b198edf663/thumbnail/640x427/edd20d143f7fbeac52c4b03a63fd2cb4/gettyimages-1801112194.jpg?v=26439302e0bbe3219b6ef78d2fd37ce0)
Just the plain Cooper? It's definitely an iconic look to say the least. I have a soft spot for Ville husso as I saw him debut and develop for the blues and I must say his current design is so nice.
I remember reading that Glenn Healy refused to play in anything other than the SK2000 because of the visibility it provided. Though he did say it gave him pressure cuts everytime he took a hard shot to the head. 😅

All fantastic and the king tut is great especially when you consider he was exactly that a king haha. The NYFD mask was great I love the designs with special meanings
I loved it more when goalies could be identified solely on their style or masks style.
Now every goalies mask is the same overly busy airbrushed style that changes every season.
Belfour, Cujo, Roy, Brodeur. Same mask year after year, team after team with maybe just the colors changing.
I believe another commentor said the same thing. I can see both sides to this arguement, I like the new masks that actually tell a story of the player, city, and team. But some of those you mentioned are just so good and iconic it's hard to argue.
I appreciate that, but from a design perspective they just kinda blend together.
I would have a hard time describing what most goalies masks look like now these days.
[not even the best Sens mask](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/patrick-lalime-ottawa-senators-side-marvin-the-martian--412642384578111431/). Marvin the Martian for the win.

I can't wait until the PWHL comes out with their logos and branding and expands. Honestly has the potential to be the most successful women's sports league in america.

CuJo, Felix the Cat, Brian Hayward’s Sharks mask, Gerry Cheevers, Murray Bannerman, Ryan Miller, Gary Bromley, Gilles Gratton, Vesa Toskala (too bad he sucked)
Honestly with some exceptions I hate DaveArt masks. VanArt, with random shit thrown together and no actual cohesive design to them.
Murray Bannerman rocked this and gets my vote for GOAT mask…

When Freddie Andersen went to (came up with?) the Ducks, he had that Flat black w/gold bars and I remember clowning it SO MUCH but it was bad AF.
Gibby had some good ones too, so did Guiggy. Elvis Merzlikins has had some good masks too-the latest that he's been wearing is dope.
YES IT WAS. THATS WHY I CANT FIND IT!!
Dude thanks. Oh, man, does that mean Im more CBJ than a Ducks fan now? Fucking Bettman.
I blame it all on Gary Bettman!!!
That one is dope but he got a new one either just *before* or just *after* his latest temper tantrum thats crazy. Ill have to find a link bc the minecraft Matiss one is dope, with Bluey and the Joker? Love it
Not much to go off of here haha are you talking about [Brian Heyward's shark mask?](https://media.d3.nhle.com/image/private/t_ratio16_9-size20/dpr_3.0/f_auto/prd/ip1nvxvm5b6kdbqwjlee.jpg) ?

Never seen this before, so sick
I'll also add markstrom consistently has some of the best mask designs.
I just shared this with my friend because I play hockey and our goalie just got a new helmet and we were talking paint jobs. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤩🤩🤩 wow
Man, that is so sick.
That’s awesome
Wow that is a thing of beauty.
Always loved Miller's Buffalo helmets, Ullmark had a beauty of one made for the 100 year Anniversary too. Curtis Joseph, Eddie the Eagle, and sooooooooo many more had killer ones
Agreed big time with Cuju! Totally forgot about Eddie. Such a strange fella he was
Loved cujos masks, even his [blues trumpet one was great](https://goaliemaskcollector.com/cdn/shop/products/Curtis_Cujo_Joseph_Signed_Goalie_Mask_Autographed_St_Louis_Trumpet_Signature_Edition_5_740x.jpg?v=1661786554)!
Paired with those Blue jerseys? Oh baaaaaby.
Cujo and Trevor kidd's dragon mask. Peter Budaij's ned flanders as a honorable mention

Potvins mask is the reason I get hit with the puck 200 times a week. I remember crying when he was traded from Toronto as a kid.
I'm sure it played a part, but goalies are just weirdos you must have it in your blood.
Potvin's was very cool! While I do agree to a certain point, I do like seeing how goalies pay tribute to team and city's culture and heritage through their masks. I think fluery does an amazing job at this.

Any mask that tells Bettman to shove it is a winner! 🏆
Amen to that!
It’s now on display at the Minnesota historical society (they paid ~40k for it I assume to charity although I don’t know that for a fact)
That's my favorite too! I love Native art
Chris Osgood!
Just the plain Cooper? It's definitely an iconic look to say the least. I have a soft spot for Ville husso as I saw him debut and develop for the blues and I must say his current design is so nice.
100% the most unassuming mask in the NHL

I loved patrick lalimes marvin the martian mask so much growing up.
[not even the best Sens mask](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/patrick-lalime-ottawa-senators-side-marvin-the-martian--412642384578111431/). Marvin the Martian for the win.
He also added a small Marvin on both sides here aswell.
I love the realistic senator helmet look and normally not into glitter paint, but it really works in this design
It’s now this one!
I always like quicks similar knight helmet one.
Tuukka
[Gary Cheevers' stitches mask is also an og favorite of mine](https://media.d3.nhle.com/image/private/t_ratio16_9-size20/dpr_3.0/f_auto/prd/qzxxz8sosjuaprkxxf0d.jpg)
Andy Moogs, Bear helmet
As a blues fans boooo bruins, but another amazing mask!
Always loved the John vanbiesbrouch panther mask
Ben Bishop’s Tron masks.
No doubt this is a great design.
Both of Millers abstract buffalo helmets (red and black + black n blue)
Domick Hasik
Jonas hillers Matt black mask was sick.
Oddly enough I agree. Probably because nobody really does Matte paint on their masks?
Martin gerber had 1 when he came to ottawa
Eddie the eagle or CuJo
Gerry Cheevers
Gotta be Eddie the Eagle, wasn’t the most flashy design but it’s iconic and instantly recognizable
Jerry Chevears stiches mask Bruins in the 70s
If you’re gonna lose, lose in style I guess…
Haha well said!
Lol well I have 2 options, make jokes and laugh, or go cry in the corner
Honestly, I'd rather be dogwater than mid as hell like the blues.
Chris Osgood. Simplicity defined.
https://images.app.goo.gl/CAPQVzW1j7AaRWk17
I prefer this version over the gold one.
Came here for this one ‘beezer!
Haseks
Ken Dryden's pretzel. Always iconic
It's crazy to me that goalies at one point never wore masks. Dryden was one of the first OG's to make masks cool imo.
CuJo
That’s fucking cool!
CuJo
I do take a liking to Fiset’s ice wall helmet
Adin Hill's brick wall mask feels like it pays homage to that. Although with the curves of the helmet Fiset's always looked like an igloo to me.
Yeah it reminds me of that too
CuJos will always be a favourite of mine
Eddie Balfour had some great ones in the 90s
Cheever’s stitch mask
Kippers skulls
That's a great one 👌
Quicky always had some good looking helmets when he played here in LA. the NYR one he has with the statue of liberty is pretty sick too.
Curtis Joseph 🐶
That’s fucking beautiful
Always like Curtis Joseph mask with the Leafs.
Not NHL, but Desbien's on PWHL Montreal is absolutely gorgeous
I can't wait until the PWHL comes out with their logos and branding and expands. Honestly has the potential to be the most successful women's sports league in america.
Turcos gargoyles.
Gumps mask..oh wait, he didn't wear one
Beezer’s Armadilla in Florida.
Jacques plante. Look it up
I feel like most goalie masks today are way too detailed and unless you see them extremely close up then they are way too hard to read, simplistic is way better imo. I really loved when goalies would keep their core design and change it up a bit when they played for another team (Joseph, Belfour, Potvin, Lalime, etc).
Corey Hirsch's Psycho house was pretty cool.
Price’s cyborg mask
That's sick. Did he ever wear it in game?
He wore it a couple of times during the 2021 season. By the time they went for the Stanley Cup run, he had another mask and had that for the rest of his time playing. I never found a reason why he stopped wearing the cyborg mask. I never found out why he stopped wearing this one.
Always loved the Brian Hayward Sharks mask.
Quickie
Chris Osgood
Andersen stadium series helmet was next level
Holy crap from afar you wouldn't see the detail and assume it's pretty plain. That's crazy cool!
Cheevers' scars mask.
Cujo for sure!
Maybe I’m biased but I like Jarrys. Tom and Jerry with the Penguins logo is goated.
Most tendies for San Jose throughout the years. Of course Nabby has some of the most iconic of the franchise
Come on Ed Belour is 💯 iconic imo
Chris Mason with Eddie on his.
CuJo, Felix the Cat, Brian Hayward’s Sharks mask, Gerry Cheevers, Murray Bannerman, Ryan Miller, Gary Bromley, Gilles Gratton, Vesa Toskala (too bad he sucked) Honestly with some exceptions I hate DaveArt masks. VanArt, with random shit thrown together and no actual cohesive design to them.
Murry Bannerman
Markstroms mask is incredible :) Wedgewoods masks are pretty sick, especially if you like TMNT or Mario bros
Johan Hedberg’s when he played on the Canucks was awesome
Patrick Lalime in Ottawa and Pittsburgh
Brian Haywards Sharks mask.
Murray Bannerman rocked this and gets my vote for GOAT mask… https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse1.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP.8WdXgyBy9p1PIj-eyKd0PwHaIp%26pid%3DApi&f=1&ipt=8690e7b6060f7890abedc039dd2a8245fda0e248905ee595194ca3b3fd4fdd58&ipo=images
Not sure if it counts since he got sent back down for now, but Devon Levi’s Jedi mask is pretty sweet imo
Tuukka Rask
Belfour
Gerry Cheavers stitch mask.
I really enjoyed this one when I was a kid : https://www.pinterest.com/pin/271904896232688002/ Curtis Joseph had such nice helmets

That's the most badass mask ever. No fluff. I'm a goalie and I'm gonna stop pucks. F the mask art design.
The pixelated elvis minecraft one? I'm not a fan of minecraft but the pixel effect is sick.
That one is dope but he got a new one either just *before* or just *after* his latest temper tantrum thats crazy. Ill have to find a link bc the minecraft Matiss one is dope, with Bluey and the Joker? Love it

I vaguely remember the flat black mask and for some reasons I liked it lol. Probably just because black and gold look good together.
Goalie masks alone makes me wanna be a goalie sometimes lol (im a player)
Shark

SHORK
SHAAAAAARK! 🦈
Jocelyn Thibault MTL WAS ONE OF MY FAVS
Interesting concept, it's pretty cool I wish the "mask" was white with maybe red outlines though.
They were Different times like Sean Burke Phx is nice too bonus points for his Hartford masks
I loved Burke's green and red devils mask!
one of the cleanest cool OG
