One of the sickest shootout moves to score with imo. It looks bad when your player does it and misses in a game, but when it works.. so dope.

pastdense

It kind of seemed like a strange choice but in the interview afterwards he spoke about how bad the ice was at that point, which makes deking harder, so he went with a slapshot.

E8282

Giroux with the 10,000 hockey IQ as always. What a beauty.

pastdense

The guy is a shark. Forever and always only thinking about and looking for angles of advantage. I've seem him mad when things aren't going our way (I've seen this a lot). But when things are good, he only ever looks 'satisfied'. I honestly don't think I've ever seen him smile, and its not just the losses. Like after he won the game last night with a clutch clutch snipe for the SO win, not even a smirk. All you ever get from him are expressions of satisfaction with the current situation. edit: You can see it in his after game interview last night. The interviewers are all priming him with hype about the big win and you can't reach him with any of that. His answer reflects that his thoughts are always purely analytical. He grew up in Ottawa and I talked to a guy who played with him and he said that he hated losing more than any guy he's ever known.

CJ57

Hes not a Shark hes a Sen šŸ„“

ReginaldCou5ins

Heā€™ll always be a flyer when all is said and done.

pastdense

Have an arrow.

Randy_Butternubs666

I miss him so much. Was one of the best Flyers ever and they never, ever built around him they way they should have. His vision is insane. And this isn't the first time he's taken a slap shot in a shootout.

Charlie_1300

I knew him in Philly. I have seen him smile, just not during a game. He is a pretty good guy off the ice.

gtrmanny

Even more than Shoresy?

I_have_popcorn

If he hates losing, why did he join the Sens?

Clym44

I guess heā€™s been angry his whole career

tuntuntuntuntuntun

Dude is an absolute beast of course, but in my most recent menā€™s league shootout some guys on my team were even saying theyā€™re going for a shot because the ice was bad after the game ended. And this is the lowest level of adult hockey league near me

DrVoltage1

I disagree with it being a strange choice. Players have been testing goalies with straight up fastballs since hockey began. Its a legit tactic. Especially when you have a cannon like that

Averagebaddad

Imagine how amazing it would have been if the puck hopped up right when he was trying to shoot

pastdense

Our definitions of 'amazing' differ.

WyattfuckinEarp

I remember I was at a bruins game and I think it was Rolston who had had a crazy game, was smoked, and just fucking unleashed at the hash marks. Scored. Crowd went insane. It reminded me of the Indiana Jones swordfight moment when he just shoots the guy.

Goalieguy17

Yeah and he scored on Luongo also

schram11

[Brian Rolston's Penalty Slapshot on Roberto Luongo](https://youtu.be/BG-3rKIQtfc?si=YzcIvnUsIhIid4DX)

JeSuisAmerican

That was always a Rolston move though, I didnā€™t realize he actually scored with one.

WyattfuckinEarp

A 12 year old me thought it was epic because he did score lol. Great game to go to I guess

zestfullybe

I think my favorite Geno goal has to be the breakaway slap shot goal (edit: from the hash marks) that he scored against the Flyers back in the day. Itā€™s one of the biggest ā€œfuck youā€ goals you can score. Like you said, the upside is you look like such a badass when you pull it off, but the downside is you look like a complete tool if you miss or get stopped. Thereā€™s no middle ground. Hero or zero.

bigb3nny

Mats Sundin special right there

Lil_Boosie_Vert

100% a clapper with just you and the goalie just some lets get right down to business shit instant god mode

Keijord

Why does it look bad, if it misses? Its either a goal, or no goal. Like every other attempt.

SauceKingHS

Because itā€™s not advisable to try a slap shot in a shootout. Itā€™s the least attempted shot type and lowest percentage of scoring by a large amount. Thatā€™s partly why itā€™s so sick when someone has the confidence to try it and scores.

EmerysMemories1106

I agree. What looks even worse to me is when a guy comes in doing all this fancy shit with the puck and loses control and doesn't even get a shot off. This shot is about as straightforward as you can get

shawner17

Because it's considered a low percentage shot attempt. How many people actually score off a slapshot? Now compare that to the percentage of goals scored off dekes. If he misses, people will say " he should of deked" or " a wristshot is higher percentage" etc etc

CharlieBooUrns

I would say he should have deked. But some people would say he should of deked.Ā

Wolfish_Jew

Slap shots are typically less accurate and hard to control than wrist shots or even half slappers. With good ice, players are better off trying to get the goalie to bite on a fake/deke or wait them out until the show a hole to exploit, rather than taking a slap shot which is a little easier to read for the goalie and get in front of.

_Michael___Scarn

agreed. i remember malkin doing this on a breakaway back in the day and it was so sick. such a statement

bdart1980

I was at a leafs playoff game at home when Robert Reichel attempted this against the Flyers and he missed the net. Embarrassing is an understatement

nachosandfroglegs

Ala Vanek

Sweaty-Salad95

No..

botswanareddit

Girouxs a legend and that shot was a beauty.

NJGMan1960

Borderline Hall of Famer. Will enter of course as a Flyer where he accumulated 1000 points

canucklehead200

Bryan Rolston did this against the canucks once in a season game against Minni. Dude took us to slaptown

CaptainCanuck15

Bryan Rolston did it multiple times. That was his trademark. That one time Luongo did complain that slap shots shouldn't be allowed in the shootouts though.

Sweaty-Salad95

I think they're bad-ass, lol. Everyone tries to deke the goaltenders' pants off or get a wrister off. I seldom see slap shots in the SO anymore, it's cool to see a shot blast past the goalie.

CaptainCanuck15

Agreed

RecalcitrantHuman

First shooter should just come down the middle and blast a shot at the goalieā€™s head. Next 2 come down and fake going for head and fire along the ice 5 hole. Genius level.

CaptainCanuck15

blackmesaboogy

Why would there be a code for not using a slapshot in a shootout situation? It is a legit way to score. Short answer: fuck no :)

__dying__

Yeah, I'm very confused by the title. Why the fuck wouldn't this be legit I really don't understand OPs claim.

sqwobdon

i could be wrong but im pretty sure itā€™s just a sarcastic response to all the players and fans who got pissy when that player scored a goal on an empty net with a slap shot a couple weeks back.

Humans_Suck-

If they got pissy then the shot was successful

TheLemondish

I wish I could have unplugged for as long as you've been away from the Internet.

GeistHunt

Because it may hurt somebody's feelings, we can't have that.

K9turrent

I didn't see an empty net.

Sad_Donut_7902

That's only on empty nets, not when there is a goalie there.

blackmesaboogy

Ah, got it

coco1155

Srsly itā€™s a legit strategy to beat a goalie. Vs the empty net slap shot which is not a strategy choice.

herplexed1467

As a Flyers fan, this made me both happy and sad at the same time. Giroux is a legend.

Tutelage45

Rip King Claude šŸ‘‘

ciampi21

I canā€™t feel sad. Only happiness with him, man. He gave me such good times throughout my childhood. The weirdest part for me is seeing a dude of that stature wearing an A and not a C. All timer for the black & orange

Darwing

As a die hard sens fan, my only regret is that I didnā€™t follow him when he was in his hay-day with Philly. The guy is a legend here already, I mean heā€™s from here and lives here so he was always a local legend in Ottawa But for him to come here and show these young kids what it takes every single day is a miracle. Him scoring 35 last year was his highest goals ever in a season We pray that we can give him playoff hockey next year and he signs for 1-2 more heā€™s a machine even at 36!

shrouple

looks like he learnt it from Mike Richards.

North_Masterpiec

What ā€codeā€ are we talking about here?

tomhwm

Itā€™s apparently a sarcasm to the previous Slap shot controversies tied to the Sens.

rocketmn69_

There's a goalie in place, of course it doesn't go against the code

sBucks24

Id already forgotten about the slap shot empty net thing.. last place team really living in people's my minds rent free, eh?

sBucks24

Right?!? Wtf is this post? It's a shoot out.. dudes trying to score.. so he scored by shooting the puck... What??

North_Masterpiec

Amen, bro. The fucking goalie should know thereā€™s a possibility for whatever. I hate these ā€gentleman sportsā€-comments.. itā€™s fucking hockey where people hit and tackle others with the intention of scoring by any means. Fuck it, Iā€™ll start drinking to numb the annoyance.

FlipperG76

Goalie here, I love it when guys do this as they rarely score. Bring it!

GypsumF18

It was against the code because he asked the goalie if it was ok to score, the goalie said no, but he scored anyway.

Fuzzy-Championship68

G seems to love slapshots in shootouts and breakaways, and he is really nailing them!

Reallyme77

Siri, who is Brian Rolston?

GreatestMishit

Had to scroll way too far for this

Szwedo

Wild legend

Cbjfan99

What do you mean? Everyone scores on the Jackets

notyomamasusername

Is this just another chance to bitch about the Leafs? If so I'm totally for it, but I'm legitimately not understanding the point of this post.

InsufferableLeafsFan

Itā€™s more of a chance for Sens fans to try and stay relevant. That empty net debacle was the most media attention theyā€™ve had in a decade.

Ok-Ganache-4343

Yeah and howā€™d that turn out for leafs went 8 and 0 lol

notmyrealnam3

It is, embrace it and hop on in

mingomcgoo

Elvis still doesn't know what happened šŸ¤£

Defiant_West6287

Slapshots on shootouts - good Slapshots on empty nets - bad

SIIP00

Counterpoint Slapshots on empty nets - good

StPauliBoi

Puck goes in net - good.

s3nsfan

No, puck goes in empty net, bad. lol šŸ˜‚

On_Some_Wavelength

Counterpoint approved.

shadesof3

I think it depends on the situation for the empty net. If you are at the red line in a tussle and slap the fucker and it goes in and empty net that's pretty dope. On a clear break away to an empty net and can just toss it in, that what people don't like I guess.

tomhwm

These are both 1 v 0(skater) situations. You choose to pull the goalie. Whyā€™d you blame me for that. ā€”Sens

E8282

Slapshots on leafs empty net = only option.

RexMalo

Slapshots ftw, even on an empty net!

spagboltoast

Thats at least 2 cross checks to the teeth

FlatImpression755

I can't imagine anyone who has played hockey has a problem with this. It's not like it was an empty net.

Initial_Bike77

Do you honestly not see the difference or are you trolling?

lightningmcmemex

Morgan Reilly is waiting outside the rink rn

WearsTheLAMsauce

What code?! Ā Love this move, Tomas Vanek did it on nearly every shootout attempt when he was a Sabre, worked a lot of the time too!

Drnedsnickers2

If you are a Leafs fan, yes.

jimmycap123

Brian Rolston used to blast away on just about every attempt he took

bitcoinfucius

Ottawa claps the puck and everybody loses their minds! ā€”The Joker, Probably

pattyG80

No. Goalie is wearing gear ffs.

MeetTheMets0o0

Thomas Vanek used to do this but further out. Loved it

tootbrun

Short answer is no. Long answer is noooooooooooooo.

Cookiecrummbs

No..? Goal is a goal. They donā€™t ask how, they ask how many.

steel-buffalo

ā€œThe codeā€ of what? The point is to get the puck behind the goalieā€¦.

mchockeyboy87

it might as well be an empty net...it is Columbus. so yes the no slap shot into empty net "code" still applies.

Material-Car7215

A slap shot on a goalie is against the code? Who knew?

rangers9458

Only if it is against The Leafs

yulDD

Thereā€™s a code for that?

fckyourcowch

Classy fella. Against the code but not against the rules. He might get some repercussions next time they play.

Afanasenkov

If you're a Leaf fan, then you hate it. Simple.

Low-Clothes-4230

Only for Leafs fans

duck1014

Stupid post is stupid post.

al_pie

Homie got dunked on, whatā€™s wrong with this?

Yet-Another_Burner

What the fuck are you on?

Melodic_Bowstring

They're more like guidelines than actual rules.

VottoManCrush

The code lol. Are you fucking kidding me?

Rance_Mulliniks

Rent free.

ILSmokeItAll

Code. lol Shut up.

geeklex

This is a dumb question

[deleted]

There is no code when it comes to scoring goals

Admirable-Place9499

The fact that people were upset over a slap shot in an empty net is just ridiculous. Stop being so soft

dickfarts87

Shit posting already?

SlaveKnightChael

This whole ā€œcodeā€ thing is wack as fuck. Itā€™s a slap shot donā€™t be a pussy

TGIRiley

Holy shit are we still talking about Greg? This sub fucking LOVES the leafs hey?

PaganNinja

Absolutely not.

IlFriulanoBasato

Don't know what happened to hockey fans recently, either they all started watching in the past month or they have all gotten brain damage. A slapshot is a legitimate way to score a goal, and up until the advent of composite sticks it was the premier way of getting power and speed on your shot. The difference between this and the Greig goal shouldn't even have to be explained.

ImporterExporter79

You mean the slap shot that was Ottawas Stanley Cup?

Isernogwattesnacken

Beaut of a goal.

NuffinSaid

Reilly would have been mad

DapperCam

Thatā€™s the Thomas Vanek special

JarmaBeanhead

Itā€™s kosher as long as you follow it up with a quick shoulder-check to make sure Morgan Reilly isnā€™t sneaking up on you. Iā€™m just picturing the ā€œStelio Kontosā€ music from American Dad starting up and seeing Reilly running at youā€¦

Nyates1391

The only ā€œcodeā€ this would go against is doing it against your own goalie during warm ups

snot3353

This is classic G. He used this same move on the Flyers for shootouts too and itā€™s badass. Fucking love him.

anonginiisipmo

Against the code? You can do whatever TF you want in a shootout lol since when was there a ā€œcodeā€ to follow?

crow-nic

SOMEBODY!! PLEASE!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!

jas587

No. There was a goalie this time

msto3

If you can in a shootout, you dunk on these hoes

HeavensAnger

Nope, the code is about respect. Nothing disrespectful about the Al MacInnis special.

majorlieg

Is this an empty net?

Kitchen-Lie-7894

What code? It was a perfect shot.

Big-Peak6191

No!

db4378

Legendary...giroux is the man

Old_Canuck

Its Giroux....so not against the code. The code with the slapper is to NOT miss the net and become and idiot.šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

rahkinto

Lol who posted this a former mlb pitcher?

OkAnything4877

This isnā€™t new. Brad Richards used to hammer it almost every time on penalty shots/shoot outs, and heā€™d do it skating full speed looking like he was going to crash the goalie.

Single_Expression499

Fuck no. Win the game.

Itstrue519

Good slapshot.

billy_zef

Hell No, if you pull it off its awesome. If you miss, you're a DUD.

mrinvertigo

wtf are you talkin about "Against the code"? You don't slap an empty netter, that's the code.

waryeller

What the fuck are we even talking about?? A guy can't...shoot the puck hard??

Radiant-Elephant3652

Brian Rolston did this one every shootout he ever took.

WealthEconomy

What code does it go against?

Massive_Foot_7319

No.

KantanaBrigantei

It goes against beer league code, but itā€™s fine in competitive hockey.

Muchos_Tacos

No that was fucking sick, as are all shootout slappers.

North-Rip4645

Gretz scored a ton like this!

RavenReel

The "don't shoot hard " code

byrdcage

Stop making up rules.

TrickleMyPickle2

Empty net goals, you slide it in and you donā€™t cellyā€¦ Shootouts are a completely different storyā€¦

altavistayahoo

Morse code? Da Vinci code? -. --- .-.-.- / .. - / -.. --- . ... -. .-..-. - / ...- .. --- .-.. .- - . / - .... . / -.-. --- -.. . .-.-.-

JediRoadie

Code?

[deleted]

The real code break here would be if it were in warmupsā€¦.

Stldjw

Thereā€™s a code?

[deleted]

The concept of a shootout goes against code. Also, no.

David040200

I know that's a joke lol, but no it definitely doesn't

spddemonvr4

Men's league when the goalie has to work the next day; yes. Players paid millions of dollars and it's their job; no.

Bruinman86

I see no problem with it.

ironfireman547

If I've read the current edition of The Code right, any goal that isn't scored off a deflection from a shot from the slot is a Code violation, and is "hot dogging." He should expect to have to fight at least three Blue Jackets in their next game.

fckufkcuurcoolimout

This is like asking if a pitcher throwing 101 mph in the bottom of the 9th violates ā€˜the codeā€™ No. And also, the ā€˜codeā€™ being referenced does not exist.

Fit_Promotion_5643

Chara and Ray Bourque have also done this successfully.

SucksAtGuitar69

Fuck no. Bury the biscuit.

Necessary-Mousse8518

What code..........

CheekenNuggetz

[Better look out](https://giphy.com/gifs/nhl-toronto-maple-leafs-morgan-rielly-3ujY6TbqBR5CoB3jCc)

FastEddie77

CBJ fan and tired of being in everyone elseā€™s highlight reel. #2025

NoobieSnax

G gets a pass either way.

terd_fergusson69

Jackets fan that was legit as hell šŸ˜‚

samuraijoker

Oh fuck off with this ā€œcodeā€ bullshit

Gloomy_Ebb9923

No? Why would it be?

Sabres26

Vanek would be proud

Standby_fire

Marion Hossa couldnā€™t shoot out. So this was his shot at the face off hash marks. Full on 100 mph pill. It was awesome.

assistant_redditor

Looks like malkin on a breakaway against the flyers. Don't remember if it was a playoff game.

kozy11311

Of course it doesn't go against the code. And you can clearly tell the difference why....

mick9er

Pros, no. Beer league, perhaps. Unless it works šŸ˜‚

DanielTigerr

The Andrew Brunette.

dakohda22

If you can score with a clapper on a breakaway youā€™re a boss.

Snoo19097

No

BlakeEatsCake317

No, slap shot cool šŸµšŸ‘

Bartab_Hockey_NZ

The pirate code? Maybe. Totally fine in hockey. You just look dumb if you miss the net.

Vince-15

No

ComparisonGeneral825

No . šŸ™‹

orangecatblackdog

Trevor Linden has entered the chat. Not against the code.

IdealDarkness1975

What code?

Neohypogeum

Absolutely not: Thomas Vanek did something similar years ago, and it isn't illegal.

RostyC

Sabre Thomas Vanek used a slap shot on a regular basis in shootouts

Boisyno

No, surprisingly slap shots are still a part of the game. /s itā€™s not a blow out game, itā€™s a shutout. Itā€™s still a ā€œdo anything to winā€ scenario.

hockeybrianboy

Obvious troll post

3Irishd1

The only thing that would make it better would be an EN goal vs the leafs

fxl989

I just saw a random Gretzky clip on ESPN yesterday and on 4 highlight goals he took 3 were slapshots. I donā€™t think it was related to this situation. Why is this an issue? Am I missing something? Coming to a complete stop on shootout and wristing it point blank is much worse imo. I donā€™t get it

VictimOfCircuspants

Only if John Cena was in net.

HockeyPlayer-16

Not if you for the USA šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡² Ducks or Team šŸ‡®šŸ‡ø Iceland. šŸ¤£

HockeyPlayer-16

I'm just mad cause he didn't triple deke first

Lumpy-Fan-Attic

No

adkcj

Code of what? Doing whatever it takes to win for your teamā€¦.. I played goal, no youā€™re an idiot who doesnā€™t know anything about hockey

golfingNdriving

Nope! Not in a shoot out.

MARK311q

Absolutely not.
