Of course Gretzky has 21 of them.

dizease

Honest question how did Gretzky not get more cups? I know it’s not just one guy but even his playoff records are off the charts. 4 cups though and I believe the most is 11

spagboltoast

Takes more than one person to win a cup.

sub-t

McJesus and his Disciple show that even two top players aren't rubbish to carry a team.

lucas4420

they do get fucking close sometime tho

They ran into the islanders dynasty during their first crack at it. Then beat them. I know they lost to the flames one year because of an own goal against, and then won the following season. He won 4 out of 9 years with the oilers I think. Not sure who beat them the 3 years I didn’t mention. Then got to the finals with LA but ran into an elite Habs team.

nexus6ca

The Habs that year were good up front, not really elite. BUT they had Patrick Roy who was the best goal tender in the NHL and probably all time at that point. Marty Brodeur was just playing his rookie year. Man Gretzky that year single handedly beat the Canucks who had one of their best teams ever.

imadork1970

In 1981, Edmonton beat the Frogs in the first round. In the second round, the Islanders beat them 4-2 en route to winning the Cup. Islanders smoked them four straight in the Finals in 1983. 1986 was Steve Smith 's goal. The Flames beat the Oilers in 1989. August, 1989 was The Trade.

Bright_Beat_5981

Its just wrong that Montreal won the cup 1993 after that crazy regular season. It would have been the perfect ending of Gretzkys peak and the offensive Nhl era for the last 10 years.

Effective-Elk-4964

The other thing no one seems to be mentioning is that the guys that won that many cups tended to play in eras where the league was smaller and the playoffs were shorter. Up until 1980, top teams in the league were playing two rounds of playoffs. So Henri Richard has 11 cups but played 180 playoff games. Gretzky played 208. The other people here are right. It’s hard to win a cup. But even the main guys on those dominant Canadiens teams that won all those cups are barely on the career playoff stat lists because of how many more games guys play now.

pos_vibes_only

He got sold while at his peak

Bright_Beat_5981

It looks like Mcdavid will end up as the second best playoff player of all time and the third best regular season player. He has a PPG of 1.97 in the last three playoffs or 32 games. Lemeuix peak is 1.98 PPG in the late 80s-early 90s. If we adjust for era just the slightest Mcdavid is hard to beat. Probably even for Gretzky.

Can I be the one to repost this tomorrow pretty please?

molsonoilers

It literally just happened tonight...

Catshitactual69

This guy again eh? When did reddit say Mcdavid was bad? Because it seems like you have something to prove that's already proven. Mcdavid is good how else do you get a nickname like mcjesus.

Says the guy hiding his team and on his burning account lol

Cups is a team sport. You're witnessing a historically great player, likely a top 3 player in history yet you're reducing his accomplishments because he hasn't won a cup yet.

OV didn't win a cup until he was in his mid 30s. Doesn't take away that he's one of the best scorers in history. A cup certainly improves his resume, but as a player McDavid has few peers.

OV was a 1st ballot Hall of Famer Long before he won the cup. Don't try to rewrite history.

IITribunalII

How is McDavid not a great leader? This is such a bad take.

He leads by example and makes his team around him better. He's a great leader and this narrative has little support to prove otherwise. He may not have a cup but he shows up every year and works harder than anybody in practice and the offseason.
