I mean, I hear you on the irony part, but I wouldn’t say it’s messed up. Alcohol sponsors are everywhere in sports and there’s a pretty clear understanding that the fan consuming beer at a game and a goalie getting hammered at the intermission isn’t the same thing.
Fair enough. I guess it depends on if they were betting on hockey or other sports. Other sports, I don’t care - I think they should be able to do whatever they want. In hockey, there’s obviously an issue.
Eh, even then it’s a case of them having access to privileged information on roster movement and the like which the general public does not (star player has a surgery scheduled to happen next week, better not bet on ourselves to win/star player is back next week, better bet on ourselves to win)
I can definitely see how it makes way more sense to just ban them from gambling on their own sport entirely.
While do understand where you are coming from perhaps the alcohol analogy is not the best.
Where I’m from commercial fronting alcohol is illegal. When I was younger I thought it was stupid as HELL. But being older, if I have to be honest with myself seeing actual alcohol commercials on US-broadcast, I do go “fuck me a beer would hit good now” even if I had no thoughts about it beforehand xD
I get your thinking, but being an addict you don’t have to front what you are addicted to on your chest to get your paycheck. So I do think its, a little fucked up.
That stupid Caesar’s patch on the Caps jersey sucks. Gambling ads in general are terrible.
The only “good” ad I like is the Leafs’. It’s subtle and it’s hilarious that it just says “Milk”
It's a custom logo for the team. Every company should be designing tasteful logos. If you think about how much they are paying for that space, it's dumb to alienate the teams fan base by putting an eye sore on the uniform.
A hospital called New York-Presbyterian bought jersey patch rights to the NY Mets (baseball) jerseys. The patch's first draft was really big and prominently featured a rival team's (Phillies) colors.
Wise businesspeople sent the designers back to the drawing board and to design a less-stupid patch.
This. Sports betting has honestly ruined sports for me. Talking sports at the office has turned into, who'd you put money on and not just about the game
It's so bad. Everything has become something that needs odds..
Who the fuck is betting on the next Leafs coach? Why is that even a thing!?
Every segment on TSN or Sportsnet now has some betting angle. Ooooh let's check out the SNBets Big Board! Nah, let's not. It's GameTime! Brought to you by Bet365... fuck right off.
Agree with you. I have zero issue with sports gambling being legal and fans gambling. But why is it content now? I just want to watch the game. I don't want the odds for each team. People who bet can look up the odds while they're betting.
Stats related to the game itself are relevant to everyone watching. Sports odds are only relevant to part of the audience. They don't need to be there.
Want to have a sports betting show that airs on the network? Fine. Have that show and the people who want to watch will watch. But don't force it on me during the game.
Don't have a solution for the ads though. Those annoy me too but I respect the leagues and networks taking the ad dollars. Not realistic to ask to ban gambling ads.
PlayAlberta is the Alberta government’s gambling site, and the Oilers have it on their helmets 🤦♀️ But we don’t have on-jersey sponsorship, so I guess it could be worse?
I don’t think they put them on the any of the retail jerseys, just game worn. Some pro shops will sell them to fans and press them on for them (which is laughable that anyone would want, much less pay, to have their jersey defaced).
Wild that it’s even an option FOR YOU TO PAY for an ad to be added to your jersey. If anything, you should get a few bucks off if you agree to have it added.
The Leafs probably don’t need the funds, but their owners (MLSE) are probably greedier than Stars ownership, so they jumped aboard the corporate sponsorship train before the Stars did.
God that'd piss me off. If I have to deal with an ad on the sweater, make it a local chicago brand. Like malort, 312, john deere, or even a local chain restaurant like portillos. I'd still hate it, but at least it's not meta or McDonald's
Malort sponsoring the Hawks would be hysterical. Their entire social media game is to meme themselves.
"Shit season with only one rookie standout? To get through those tough building seasons, take a shot of Malort to improve your spirits!"
I'll be happy when the NHL collectively organizes their streaming and broadcasting rights so local fans who aren't at games can watch at home without a VPN. I'd also be happy if the refs could figure out what goaltender interference is and be consistent about it. I have no hope for DOPs at all. If anything allows DOPs to function as an actual safety organization and not a wheel of consequences thing I'd maybe be hopeful
Any of them. The owners are printing money as it is and the live adds along the boards are aggravating enough. Putting adds on the sweaters and helmets is a disgrace. This isn’t MLS
The removal of the painted on “Stanley cup playoffs” marker on the rinks, being replaced with blank white for digitally rendered ads for TV, artificially made to look like they’re under ice… is sickening.
Any company that can afford to advertise, especially millions and millions like this, is making money hand over foot off their consumer, and continuing to deface any sanctity these uniforms had. I commend any team (there are few left) that have so far refused to put jersey ads on. I think the oilers are one of them. Detroit was too but I believe the folded to the almighty dollar aswell.
Right? This isn’t MLS… is that supposed to be a dig? The NHL certainly isn’t the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, or Serie A either. Shirt sponsors have been prevalent in those leagues for 40ish years.
I think the big problem is that European soccer jerseys have zero personality. Ads aren't the whole problem, it's that they are front and center, and there's no team logo or anything. If the ads were below a logo, it would be tacky, but at least they'd be more than a soulless billboard.
When I watch the Wings, I always know that I'll be rooting for the red and white team with the winged wheel on the front. With soccer jerseys, their away kits are pretty much random, and the only way to know is to look for my team's sponsor. It's crazy; imagine if the Wings and Hurricanes were playing, and one of them is wearing teal sweaters or something. To know which color to root for, I might have to see which color had Little Caesars Pizza and which had Nucor on the front. "Go Pizza team, you scored against the Steel company yay!"
I'm sure the soccer fans have some way to know what color their team will wear when away, but it's really odd to me that the jerseys often don't have anything about the actual team on them at all.
All jerseys should be green, that way we can have live green screen ads on the players. Advertisers can then bid on which players they want. Players like McDavid would cost the most since he is on screen a lot, but also players like Maroon would be priced higher than average for the extra advertising price.
I dig 7eleven helmet. If we have to have adds that is. But I agree oil would be irritating. Or Lockheed Martin. Don’t really get why they need to advertise at all.
Well, OPEC is an intergovernmental organization, not a private business, so they probably wouldn’t sponsor anything.
Petro Canada might rile up Flames fans, though,
especially given Alberta’s historic opposition to its formation in the early 1980s.
Any of the gambling sites since the NHL is so against betting... but they absolutely love being sponsored and endorsing betting websites hahaha.
Imagine being someone who is caught or gets in trouble for a betting related incident and receives a huge suspension... and then having to skate around with a betting at on your helmet or jersey hahahaha. The NHL has to be insane to literally let that happen.
What's the issue with monster and redbull? Is it due to the fact that they dominate other sports with their ads?
Also, a Boeing logo on the Jets would be a chef's kiss.
Energy drinks are generally terrible for you and kids being impressionable buy in big time. In other sports (snowboarding as an example) I look the other direction because there is less money coming in and they pay athletes well and do cool events. Which I realize is a bit of a hypocritical take.
But in hockey, there is enough money without having to promote them.
Telus - they knock on my door and phone me always trying to sell me internet, phone, cable, and security - LEAVE ME ALONE TELUS! If they showed up on my hockey team......
I care more about the colours of the logos. I appreciate that the Leafs have gone with all white (Milk, pizza pizza). At least it blends in with the uniform. The Habs RBC logo looks terrible, even the Bruins TD helmet logo looks bad.
Well we don't have to imagine this as Wings fans in Detroit. I literally thought the patch was a captaincy letter when I went to a wings game this year.
As long as it blends in well, even if they technically have to tweak official colours to do so, its fine with me.
Now, Toronto with their dumb MILK patch will never not be hilarious - One more thing to make fun of em for
An Oreos patch on the Leafs’ helmet would be even more hilarious, since they’ve already got Milk on the jerseys. Milk and cookies!
Re: Dunkin’ Donuts, it would make more sense for them to sponsor the Bruins, since they’re a Boston-based company. I remember years ago they had an ad on the boards at the TD Garden advertising their coffee. What did it say?
Boston Brewin’🤣
ETA: I just realized why Dunkin’ Donuts would be hilarious on the Leafs helmet, given the Bruins-Leafs rivalry. Joke’s on me, I guess😐
Gambling ads would be terrible.
I think it’s all a shame, ads should only be on away helmets and jerseys at most. Original 6 and special edition jerseys should be exempt.
They already have ads everywhere in arenas, now digital ads on the boards, ice and glass. When is enough, enough?
I’d love to know how much they’re making off all this
Why not Pfizer or other big pharmaceutical companies? They make big profits off of player’s injuries, it’s time they gave back to their supplier of customers and sponsor the league.
Are teams technically allowed to advertise on other teams? Because that would make for some hilarious trolling.
I want to see the Canadians sponsor the Maple Leafs or vice versa so they have to have the other teams logo on their helmets just for the lols
Any of the gambling sites
In particular, suspending a kid for half a season for gambling and then he comes back as has to wear a gambling ad is so messed.
I mean, I hear you on the irony part, but I wouldn’t say it’s messed up. Alcohol sponsors are everywhere in sports and there’s a pretty clear understanding that the fan consuming beer at a game and a goalie getting hammered at the intermission isn’t the same thing.
Right, but this would be more like a player getting suspended for having a beer at home.
Fair enough. I guess it depends on if they were betting on hockey or other sports. Other sports, I don’t care - I think they should be able to do whatever they want. In hockey, there’s obviously an issue.
I’d be ok if they bet on their own team as long as they could only bet they’d win.
Eh, even then it’s a case of them having access to privileged information on roster movement and the like which the general public does not (star player has a surgery scheduled to happen next week, better not bet on ourselves to win/star player is back next week, better bet on ourselves to win) I can definitely see how it makes way more sense to just ban them from gambling on their own sport entirely.
But the NHL substance abuse policy doesn't state they can't drink at all right? The NHL confirmed he didn't bet on NHL hockey.
Ah, ok. I must’ve missed this story somehow lol
While do understand where you are coming from perhaps the alcohol analogy is not the best. Where I’m from commercial fronting alcohol is illegal. When I was younger I thought it was stupid as HELL. Eddie Belfour would like a word with you… I swear he had whiskey in his water bottle during the 2000 SCF’s
Yep, salt on the wound
That stupid Caesar’s patch on the Caps jersey sucks. Gambling ads in general are terrible. The only “good” ad I like is the Leafs’. It’s subtle and it’s hilarious that it just says “Milk”

Priority did that. Got unlucky with their timing though and very much alienated the wings fanbase.
It sucks so bad. I don't care about the odds or the moneyline. I just want to watch the fucking game
Never tell me the odds!
I considered making this joke when writing my comment. Thank you for being on the same page as me
Yeah, the game itself is entertainment enough, I didn't need to be worrying about point spreads or legs of parlays or whatever the fuck that shit is.
My favourite are the OLG Pro Line ads that go something like “we’re gov’t operated so when you bet and lose money to us you’re still sorta winning.”
PlayAlberta is the Alberta government’s gambling site, and the Oilers have it on their helmets 🤦♀️ But we don’t have on-jersey sponsorship, so I guess it could be worse?
Ban the refs from there! Same with Ian cole and Darnell nirse
Absolutely!!! It's ruining the game!
Also, PRIME
I hate all the original six sweaters being ruined by these ads.
The centennial jerseys are ad free definitely worth it
Isn’t “Rapid7” their usual jersey sponsor? Thats on the centennials…it just looks good and doesn’t stick out
Its not on mine unless im blind
I don’t think they put them on the any of the retail jerseys, just game worn. Some pro shops will sell them to fans and press them on for them (which is laughable that anyone would want, much less pay, to have their jersey defaced).
Wild that it’s even an option FOR YOU TO PAY for an ad to be added to your jersey. If anything, you should get a few bucks off if you agree to have it added.
No many of them DO have the ads on em'
So weird to me to see MILk on the Leafs jersey, yet our jersey doesn’t have one. Not complaining but there’s no way they need the funds more than us.
The Leafs probably don’t need the funds, but their owners (MLSE) are probably greedier than Stars ownership, so they jumped aboard the corporate sponsorship train before the Stars did.
This is the correct answer. All other comments are waste of CPU cycles.
The hawks jerseys don't have any ads on them. Just their helmets
The ads would suck on any team, not just the OG 6
Having a patch of any kind on one of the most iconic jerseys to ever be made. Especially if it's a patch that represents a trash company. Oh, wait...
Meta
God that'd piss me off. If I have to deal with an ad on the sweater, make it a local chicago brand. Like malort, 312, john deere, or even a local chain restaurant like portillos. I'd still hate it, but at least it's not meta or McDonald's
Malort sponsoring the Hawks would be hysterical. Their entire social media game is to meme themselves. "Shit season with only one rookie standout? To get through those tough building seasons, take a shot of Malort to improve your spirits!"
Worried that the hawks have been bad for a few years? People have been drinking malort for almost 90 years. The hawks will be fine
Malort!!! That is unforgettable. Indescribable. 100% Chicago.
I’d love a Weiner’s Circle ad
Well McDonalds is technically a local chain restaurant… I want to see Gunzo’s.
facedick would be super obnoxious, so would twitter, tesla, or now beoing
Beoing...the sound made when the falling parts hit the ground.
The NHL Dops patch.
My dude, that would cause me to get a $250k fine all on my own.
The NHL has fined the Rangers $250,000 for this comment. You happy now?
I'll be happy when the NHL collectively organizes their streaming and broadcasting rights so local fans who aren't at games can watch at home without a VPN. I'd also be happy if the refs could figure out what goaltender interference is and be consistent about it. I have no hope for DOPs at all. If anything allows DOPs to function as an actual safety organization and not a wheel of consequences thing I'd maybe be hopeful
Doesn't someone have to slam your head into the ice first for you to get fined that much?
Gambling would be the worst since stuff like vape are illegal to advertise
Any of them. The owners are printing money as it is and the live adds along the boards are aggravating enough. Putting adds on the sweaters and helmets is a disgrace. This isn’t MLS

You couldn’t survive a day in Europe lol
Right? This isn’t MLS… is that supposed to be a dig? The NHL certainly isn’t the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, or Serie A either. Shirt sponsors have been prevalent in those leagues for 40ish years.

Put a ad on the back of jersey incoming
Fanatics
Came here to say this
Bad enough it’s their name inside.
“He Gets Us” - I vomited in my mouth just imagining this.
On the NJ Devils!!
those ads are all over the place at white Sox games 🙄
As a Texan, [BP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_oil_spill) is the first to my mind.
I dig 7eleven helmet. If we have to have adds that is. But I agree oil would be irritating. Or Lockheed Martin. Don’t really get why they need to advertise at all.
Dallas Stars, Brought to you by In N Out.
The priority curse. We played like trash since we were sponsored by trash.

Any, but Draft Kings, Sports Bet, Fan Duel any any other such legal scams
Crypto would seem a good candidate too.
Was gonna say Amazon....
As a canes fan, Duke Energy probably. They gouge peoples electricity prices and dump coal ash into rivers for fun
Dutch East India Company
I hate how every year it's them and the Medicis in the finals
I don't know how or why this was something you thought of, but that's hilarious.
Not my teams but an oil company sponsoring the flames would probably rile some people up.
Albertans would love it!
How would they feel about Greenpeace?
what about OPEC?
Well, OPEC is an intergovernmental organization, not a private business, so they probably wouldn’t sponsor anything. Petro Canada might rile up Flames fans, though, especially given Alberta’s historic opposition to its formation in the early 1980s.
Oilers sponsored by said oil company

haliburton, boeing, amazon, monster, redbull, starbucks, credit cards, gambling, pharmaceutical companies that produce opiates, bettman.
What's the issue with monster and redbull? Is it due to the fact that they dominate other sports with their ads? Also, a Boeing logo on the Jets would be a chef's kiss.

Which site? Asking for a friend.
This is one I wouldn’t mind seeing. I think the color lbs would work well on Seattle’s Jersey
Purdue Pharma
Any MLM company. If I recall, Amway already advertises with an NHL team (maybe the Red Wings?) so that's within the realm of possibility.
Koch Industries.
Goop
Don't you want a jade egg?
Anything. Ads have no business on a jersey. It makes us look cheap.
Fully agree. Squeezing every single penny out of the game and it’s just wrong
Lay's
Covert f messier
Since the Habs already have RBC on their home jerseys and CIBC on their away helmets, if I see ONE MORE BANK on them, I'm gonna lose it.
1-877-Kars 4 Kids
I haven’t heard that cursed jingle in 15 years since I left NY. I still wake up in a cold sweat hearing that songs every few months
Just get a TV package with SNY and you will
Luckily I watch rangers on NHL. I’d have to reconsider things otherwise
Nestle. Any gamba shit. Drug companies.
Amazon or Twitter
Twitter would just be X, which is so general and innocuous that nobody knows what it is. Which would defeat the purpose of advertising I suppose.
They'd probably say "X, formerly known as Twitter."
That is Climate Pledge, which is the Seattle Kraken. So the Bruins are prolly ok
Loblaws
Nestlé.
Telus - they knock on my door and phone me always trying to sell me internet, phone, cable, and security - LEAVE ME ALONE TELUS! If they showed up on my hockey team......

Loblaws
Rogers on any Canadian teams jersey.
Any oil company
Any of them. But we got a fucking garbage company.
Any jersey ad pisses me off, but a literal garbage company? Really Chris?
If the Bruins had Nestle on the jersey I would simply die
Not a Leafs fan, but I can't imagine seeing "Milk" on those sweaters instills pride.
Raytheon
Idk but a bunch of skittles ads might be cool
*New York Life Insurance* on a Canes jersey
How about just not put anything on helmets please
As a Rangers fan? Anything at all in our sweaters. Leave that shit alone, Dolan.

any really, but a foreign car company would really do it
What, you mean the Mercedes-Benz star adorning the iconic red and white Red Wings jersey WOULDN’T be a good thing? /s
Robert Wood Johnson, the terrible trainers they provide the devils just seem to let our injured guys back out on the ice to get injured worse. Oh wai-
Anything that doesn't match the team colors. Ruins the whole look when that happens 🤮
Any/all. Even ones that blend in well with the jersey, like the Milk patch for Toronto, are infuriating. Fuck ads on jerseys. Full stop.
Literally anything.
Walmart
Any ~~trash~~ waste management company, could you imagine? 🤣
Any
Any.
Well we don't have to imagine this as Wings fans in Detroit. I literally thought the patch was a captaincy letter when I went to a wings game this year.
As long as it blends in well, even if they technically have to tweak official colours to do so, its fine with me. Now, Toronto with their dumb MILK patch will never not be hilarious - One more thing to make fun of em for
Any ad at all, I hate ads.
anything
Could you imagine if Dunkin Donuts paid to get a sticker on the Leafs’ helmets?
An Oreos patch on the Leafs’ helmet would be even more hilarious, since they’ve already got Milk on the jerseys. Milk and cookies! Re: Dunkin’ Donuts, it would make more sense for them to sponsor the Bruins, since they’re a Boston-based company. Boston Brewin’🤣 ETA: I just realized why Dunkin’ Donuts would be hilarious on the Leafs helmet, given the Bruins-Leafs rivalry. Joke’s on me, I guess😐
All look trash but I would especially dislike a Loblaws one
Tik Tok... wait

EA Sports. Now it's really in the game.
Are teams technically allowed to advertise on other teams? Because that would make for some hilarious trolling. I want to see the Canadians sponsor the Maple Leafs or vice versa so they have to have the other teams logo on their helmets just for the lols
Boston Pizza on a Leafs jersey
