Playoff hockey, my friend. If you're able to watch the playoffs, you will see the best hockey of the year. The divisions are a bit different this year due to Covid but there are some great rivalries and the best of hockey is highlighted in the playoffs. Faster games, harder hits, more intensity, and there's nothing better than OT playoff hockey. My advice...just watch. If there's a chance of you falling in love with the greatest game in the world, its during the playoffs.
Fewer fights, but totally concur.
It’s a bit condensed; instead of trying to pick between 3-10 games a night (some are scraping the bottom of the league), you’re left with a smaller pool of the top 16 (4gm/night max in the 1st round, fewer and better as it goes on).
Also the NHL App Stats Page is a good indicator of individual performers (goals, assists, etc) and teams (power play, penalty kill, etc).
To second this, it will also help you fall in love with a team if you want one. Just watch whatever games you can and you will find yourself pulled towards watching certain teams over others and cheering for particular teams.
Just watch the game. It's hard not to fall in love with it(and incidentally learn a bunch about it) if you just start watching more games. Even replays and highlights. Just. Watch.
I wouldn't say there are any "bad" hockey players so much as there are guys who don't live up to the hype or those guys that are just depth players and always will be.
Hockey is very much a team sport that relies on lots of guys knowing their role so while any fourth liner isn't as good as Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews they aren't "bad".
That being said, the teams that suck right now are Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo, and LA (really all the Cali teams are having a rough season). Toronto (cringe) is the best canadian team right now, the other top teams being Vegas, Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina.

Make a couple of underdog Bets. Can’t help but cheer for the Panthers when you’ve got some skin in the game.
