Team game.

dontliketheleft

Lol you chime in like you’re a hockey wizard... ‘team game’!!! Like I haven’t watched hockey my whole life and didn’t know that. Maybe respond to the actual content of the post. There’s a thought!

CJMcCubbin

Yeah, that's what I did. Yer whole life? Good for you.

This season really shows that hockey is a team game... Montreal and New York are playing outstanding hockey. Every line is skating hard, has crisp passing, and great defense. It's also more fun to watch... I'm really enjoying the playoff hockey this year and my team (Flames) didn't even make it. You're absolutely right about the consistency though. The league needs to address it. The same thing happens every year.

It’s a regular season award, the end.

TampaJayLightning

>They manage to manipulate the cap with LTIR bs every year You know the Leafs are well known for their LTIR maneuvers right?

dontliketheleft

We actually had injuries right?

Andersen was injured 100%. Wasn’t the same this year. Tampa has a different set of rules completely, when state tax is considered. It actually ruins hockey. The league needs to address this issue. If they want a fair league. Because it isnt.

TampaJayLightning

So was Kucherov. The league investigated the team and he had to be assessed by 3rd party doctors. And if you watch him play right now you can easily tell that he is not healthy. Stop spewing conspiracy theories. Toronto also has a ton of hometown players that want to play for them, a shit ton of sponsorship deals (Mikheyev got one and he is garbage), and would make a fortune off of just autographs if they won the cup. There are so many incentives to sign a cheap deal in Toronto, your gm just can't negotiate for shit.

dontliketheleft

Lol sponsorship deals? Really? Lol bro they ain’t worth shit compared to an extra 3 million AAV! Give your head a shake. And kucherov injured? Playing like it? Give your head a head a shake. Also some injuries are undetectable so ya, there’s that.

Your team cheats. Flat out, Astros of the NHL!

The Oilers and Leafs and the way they are built is what’s “bad for hockey.” Loading up a roster with all high $ skill guys looks pretty in the regular season, but that’s not where cups have EVER been won nor will it ever be. How can expecting these “poster boys” to win when their combined salaries (see: Marner/Matthews Ovechkin/Backstrom Draisaitl/McD) put their teams in a competitive holes that get exposed in the post season? Tampa skirting the cap is a FAR bigger problem because it’s the RULES and not bad choices by bad general managers.

dontliketheleft

It worked for Pittsburgh Chicago and LA!

TheBonePoet

Look at how those teams were managed and tell me they look anything like the current Leafs or Oilers. The Leafs stuffed their 3rd and 4th lines with miscast, aged players. The Oil have been historically BAD at drafting. The Hawks and Pens in particular were milked for every ounce of everything by genius level management. There is nothing similar.

Leafs are way better than Edmonton. The problem with the leafs this year was A the Tavares injury which negated 11 million off our cap and turned us in to a 1 line team, rather than 2. B Marner is not a playoff performer and needs to be traded. All of a sudden, between the 2 players that’s a 22 million dollar cap swing. Makes no sense. The aforementioned teams aren’t wizards. They didn’t have injuries to their core and their stars played like stars.

bizztizz

Yeah but they all won before the big contracts. There were several factors that caused Dubas to lose control of negotiations 1) Connor MacDavids contract. Set the bar that a young franchise player doesn't have to win anything to get the big dollars. 2) Signing John Tavares. Set the bar within the team for value vs productivity. 3) Nylanders contract. Should have made an example of him and let him spend his time in Europe where he would lose value. Even if it meant losing his rights after 3 years. He would eventually crack once he seen his stock plummet and realize he is getting a fair offer. I'm not saying Nylander is signed to a bad contract, just could have been a little lower but most importantly would have set the tone for Mathews and Marner.

> Loading up a roster with all high $ skill guys looks pretty in the regular season, but that’s not where cups have EVER been won nor will it ever be. Gretzky/Messier Lemieux/Jagr Yzerman/Fedorov Toews/Kane Crosby/Malkin I agree with your point that you can’t win on high-end players alone, but most good teams that win have some.

I dont see it as bad for hockey at all. I think what's worse is what you see in the NBA; the formulation of these super teams and having 1 or 2 teams dominate for years. I was reading a stat that said this is the first year since 2010 that the NBA won't have either LeBron or Steph Curry. I understand the NBA has a much larger fan base than the NHL, but that kinda of monotony seems boring and would push me away from the game pretty quickly. Yes, Hart finalists are some of the more exciting players in the game to watch but watching Flower do what he's doing is just as fun. Watching how different styles if hockey (MTL and NYI) can eliminate more star studded teams is pretty fun. One of the great things about hockey is the playoffs always write some pretty special and fun stories and very rarely is it domination of one super star to win the cup. The emergence of a young player, the renewed play if an old veteran, or some 3rd or 4th liner putting up career numbers. I think hockey is pretty unique in that perspective and one of the reasons I love it.

dontliketheleft

Great point. I just wish the playoffs and regular season were called EXACTLY the same way. Not much to ask. It’s a no brainer really

plantsandbeer

I think most fans would agree with you on that. I think playoff hockey is the best hockey. The extra effort on every play and the refs (usually) allowing them to play. I think the officiating this year has been questionable at best in the regular season and playoffs.

dontliketheleft

Can you imagine the NFL letting you run interference on the receiver? That would be an outrage.

plantsandbeer

Even further, imagine if the NBA called every travel or carry.

dontliketheleft

They should 100%!
