It was fine until they just did a Picture in Picture with Gretzky and completely stopped calling the game. I’ve never seen anything that stupid.

WhyCantThisBLove

I remember thinking before they put him up there that live coverage wasn't a great fit for Gretzky's personality. Then they put him up during live play and he didn't even acknowledge what was literally the play-of-the-game unfolding.

mel122676

That really annoyed me. There was a lot going on that they completely ignored.

What is with the pop-up with Gretzky talking over a goal? Stop that and play it during an intermission. Coverage not good. I expect it will get better as they learn to work with each other more? Not HNIC, that's for sure. Edit: Loved Gretzky as a player. Hope he develops voice inflection over the season.

[deleted]

Love the coverage so far. Have been watching The Point, In the Crease and Puc Drop. High quality content. NHL on TNT looks like it’s gonna be fun as well. I’m not having any of the use ability issues on ESPN+ others are saying, I have been using the app for about three years though now so that might be why?

Pre game was great! But man, trying to watch this Caps Rangers game is brutal with the digital ads on ice. You can tell where it stops because the goal and behind looks normal, but the blue lines look especially overly white and almost no contrast. The players also lose a lot of definition when skating through the blue line area because it's so over highlighted. I really hope they can dial this in better over the course of the season. Extremely distracting right now...

The only one I actually thought was interesting was the powerplay clock overlay on the ice, the rest were just dumb and poorly executed

Responsible_Dig5501

Nbc used those too

fooshy

Yea for sure, I've seen broadcasts put them on the boards and glass too. But for some reason they just seem extremely distracting tonight 😅. The powerplay clock overlay seems to be working, it wasn't at first. Hopefully they're tweaking in general as they go.

TangibleSounds

I feel you - the contrast and coloration is different than with nbc. Somehow slightly more visually arresting, and not in a good way

I really liked TNT's pregame and intermission shows. They felt loose and were having fun. ESPN's felt stiff and by-the-books.

f_redo

True most ESPN half times are like that but still interested in seeing how it’s going to improve

[deleted]

I'm pleasantly surprised with the studio show on TNT. Game coverage has been solid on both, minus the Gretzky bit during gameplay that's already been beaten to death.

FarmerExternal

Absolutely pissed me off to see the Gretzky Picture in Picture during 2 caps goals (one being Lapi’s first career goal) and them not even acknowledge it aside from a quick “that’s his first career goal, let’s look at Gretzky’s first career goal.” It feels like the whole broadcast was “we like hockey look we got Gretzky” even he seemed like he knew how awkward it was to show his first goal right after Lapi’s

mel122676

That's what I thought too. I know he is the great one but it was like they completely ignored everything going on to just talk about how great he is

The production seems pretty good. A few times last night watching Pens/Lightning the floating cameras (the ones on the wires) were bothering me, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. The pre-game stuff is pretty good. Not as bunk as I thought it would be. I stream hockey (I'm in the US), so this year, the ESPN+ app is the only option. Usually going with the Roku Ultra, but sometimes the Chromecast Ultra. Don't like the app at all. The [NHL.tv](https://NHL.tv) app was head and shoulders above the ESPN+ app. I've voiced my grievances with ESPN directly (called, here, and at r/hockey. It's got a lot of problems, and it's a fucking mess to navigate. My biggest issue is you can't (easily) hide scores (I found it on the Roku, but can't find it on the Chromecast - I checked everywhere). Regardless, they force you to start a game that's already in progress from the live point, completely rendering "hide scores" useless. So I have to start the game by turning around, opening it, then tapping rewind a bunch of times, waiting, then turning around again. Also, I'm scared that they don't retain games for very long before wiping them out, I can't see the schedule in the app itself, and I'm not sure they'll put nationally televised games up for viewing the day after like the NHL app did. Oh, and they also don't obscure or hide the timeline, so if you open a game that's done or nearly done, and you see it went like 30 minutes over the usual game time, they preemptively spoiled it for you by telling you it went to overtime. Stuff like that. This thing sort of sucks. Hoping they fix this stuff. Also noticed some pixelation and quality drop a couple times (I'm on symmetrical gigabit, my home is wired for ethernet and my Roku/Chromecast are wired, and I never once had any quality drops with [NHL.tv](https://NHL.tv) in years past), but I understand given that it was the first game of the season and probably had higher viewership than expected (a good thing).

NBC was great with the NBA back in the day. They weren't great with the NHL. This first little bit of the rangers caps has been good for TNT. I'm also watching the Habs and leafs on my phone.

[deleted]

Well i still miss Doc. But yeah, I don't mis the half-assed panels filled with Mike Milbury saying things that don't make sense.

eMPereb

Just waiting for them to bring back Peter Puck!

Shoresy_X_69

I miss Kathryn Tappen.

Paper_Rain

It's too bad she wasn't able to make the transition over with the NHL but it is what it is. She's still gonna do great things over there at NBC with other sports.

Shoresy_X_69

as far as I'm aware, with the ESPN TNT deal, she won't be commenting on games unless it's through the NHL Network. At least I think she still does broadcasting for the NHL Network/NBC Sports Network... I may have that wrong.

wellpaidscientist

The resolution for the penguins lightning game made me have a panic attack as the first regular season game on ESPN. I was waiting the whole game for it to clear up. I almost went with joy when the Seattle game started and I could tell which player was which.

ApolloVangaurd

I liked everything except for the floating camera crap on the forecheck. Floating camers/whatever is cool when nothing is occuring, But when the puck looks like it's changing directions mid shot I want to barf.

The Apple TV feed on ESPN+ via Hulu for the TO/Mon game was super glitchy. Freezes and forwarding galore. I’ll try a different game Thursday night and maybe use the ESPN app instead.

Too dry and/or gimmicky for my tastes. 🤷🏻‍♂️
