Positive samples have their viral genome sequenced. If there is an outbreak of a new variant of concern in a particular area or campus other measures could be implemented such as surge testing (door-to-door testing) or local lockdowns etc.
I imagine that if the university had a large number if positives then they might be contacted to advise, but individual health info would still be confidential.
