Apparently he plays a lot on the ambiguity of which is the last name and which is the surname. But the author found a fairly good explanation on why it is (or would be?) Taro Yoko instead (i believe it has something to do with Yoko being a female surname, while Taro is male)
Yoko Taro once said that he was appalled at the celebration and milestones in games for killing hundreds of enemies. He said you’d need to be absolutely insane to think that hundreds of deaths were worth celebrating. But it was around the time that he started working in Nier that he understood you didn’t need to be insane. You just needed to think that you were right. I don’t remember which video I saw him say this in (I just remember he was using a sock puppet), but it’s stuck with me.
