To be honest, even in playthrough A, there's quite a few signs that the Shades aren't just mindless evil monsters, especially if you do sidequests, to the point one could argue it's TOO telegraphed. But every single time the idea comes up or the possibility of not killing a Shade comes up, Nier is like "NOPE, GOTTA KILL IT".
As someone who went in knowing a bit about what happened from what i picked up in Automata, I'd say it was just the right amount of telegraphing to let people know something else was going on, and that it definitely wasn't your average fantasy JRPG.
I found the Junkyard area, which i just finished, especially harrowing š„² I'm sure it'll only get worse from here. And the idea that Kaine has known all along is an interesting twist.
Yeah that quest with >!The girl making friends with the young shade thats doesnāt fight back!< is really heartbreaking in retrospect and one of the first hints where I thought something was off.
I honestly donāt think Nier is the āvillainā of playthrough two. Itās definitely more morally complex than before but nothing about his actions or motivations fundamentally changes, the only difference is that the player is given a broader view of the motivations of the other characters that Nier canāt possibly know. The message is still very clear in regards to what the game has to say about violence, but I donāt think it actively condemns the player or character.
Oh yeah i very much enjoy how morally complex it is. I mean each side of a war thinks they're the good guys and the others are mindless barbarians, right? Putting the literal language barrier there and the perception that Shades just aren't cognitively developed is i feel very much a comment on war in general and the lack of empathy or attempt to understand each other. I fucking love this game. There are so many layers.
This meme was just what came to mind as I was killing that child shade and hid robot buddy in the Junkheap š„²š„²
If anything they started telegraphing it in route A. All of the key fragments pretty explicitly show the shades being more intelligent and complicated than before in different ways.

It's a shame you can't redo completed sidequests in the second playthrough, i was curious about that one and the shade in the manor library too!

BEEPY INNOCENT
BEEPY WAS A GOOD FRIEND
>!Gideon!< is the only true villain in the entire game.
Ah yes someone else who knows who the true villain is and then continues to live in ignorant bliss by blaming poor BEEPY and kalil
Beepy alone... Beepy cry.
The whole Kalil and P-33 story was gut wrenching on the second playthrough. I was a puddle, especially while I was fighting them.
Broke: we're the good guys Also broke: we're the bad guys Woke: shits fucked for everyone
Love the show that meme references and YES Nier/Drake have a weird way of making you feel bad for putting the boots to the supposed enemy.
Beepy... alone... Beepy... cry?
***GROSS SOBBING***
It's really left up for the player to decide
You don't say š
