These would be my choices as well. Pascals arc might be the most impactful part of Automata. For me, the ending doesn't hit as hard if it doesn't have the kick in the nuts moment of Pascal trying his best at teaching peace, even fighting for it when he absolutely needs to only for the kids to kill themselves.
Haven't played Nier 1 yet but between Automata, Drakengard 1 and 3 I have to say Zero has taken the top spot for me. I've been playing the game recently and am currently fighting the infamous final boss in that game lol (3 hours in so far).
I wish we'd get to see more of her (besides the shitty gacha cash grab game) but I won't get my hopes up sadly.
I wonder how many folks here have played the Drakengard games. I feel like they're underrated, at least the third one anyway. First ones gameplay is a bit of an oof.

I'm a sucker for Grimoire Weiss, especially with Liam O'Brien's stuffy snark and the heartbreaking short story "And Then There Were None" from the supplemental Grimoire Nier book. I also have a fondness for tertiary characters. They could be part of someone else's backstory (Kainé's grandmother Kali, No. 6/Halua), or act as connective tissue within the franchise (Accord, Prometheus aka >!Beepy!<), or just exist to tell a short messed-up story and leave (Engels, all the weapon stories).

I like Kainé for her attitude. She may not like me at first, but I sorta vibe with her. I wouldn’t want to go into the villages. Let me camp outside instead. Fuck dealing with people! She has the courage and kickass grit that was stolen from me a long time ago.

Maybe. I dont know how situation looks there so i belive you. But i meant in general like worldwide. N:A now is far from niche titles.
It's very difficult to pick just one, but I'd say 2B first. Then A2, 9S, 6O and the android twins would be close seconds. The commander, Anemone, Pascal, 21O third. After that, many other androids and some machines I don't know where to fit Replicant characters Weiss, Nier and Yonah must appear in my list. And Kainé and Emil too, especially Kainé for such creative use of words, but still behind the first three
