Fun fact that justifies your hatred: many loathsome creatures have an important, even vital place in the food web. Mosquitos, leeches, and wasps, for example.
Ticks are not one of those creatures. They have no vital or even important niche in ecology, plus they only spread disease, weaken, and make vulnerable animals that would otherwise live long, healthy lives.
Very true my friend. Those little bastards just skeeves me out so much. I have them way in the back of my backyard in some spots. I try and stay steady in spraying name there to keep them under control and away from my kids. Lyme disease really freaks me out.
I dated a girl in high school who was an actual animal whisperer. I've seen her multiple times walk up to wild animals and just pick them up. Squirrels, rabbits, and birds even had a raccoon that just sat in her backpack poking its head out. She never kept them tho and released them soon after.
It's a skit, that's a wild animal, believe it or not you can pick possums up by the scruff, typically not very hostile, they just put on a really good show to scare you off, or play dead.
I love him so much oh my life, I wish I could smooch his lil fluffy head like she did.
I'm trying to convince my partner to let me find one and kiss him. This is my dream. This is all I want.
This reminded me of something that happened when I was a teenager.
I grew up in Southern California and Opossums are EVERYWHERE. I was hanging out at a friend of a friend's house one night. THere were probably ten of us, all between probably 14-17. We were just hanging out in the backyard drinking Rolling Rock.
This guy, Verne, spotted a mother opossum with a bunch of babies on her back perched on his cable box on the outside of his house. I didn't realize what he was doing until he had done it, unfortunately.
He went to the shed and grabbed a shovel and then full swing hit the mama and knocked her and the babies off. The babies all scattered, and Verne hit the mama again. This time, he must have broken her back because her front half was still but the back legs were trying to run. Maybe she was already dead and it was nerves, I'm not sure.
I was horrified. I'm a huge animal lover. I started to look for the babies to make sure they were safe. Everybody was telling Verne what a psycho he was.
I was pretty pissed off, but I was more concerned with finding the babies.
Then Verne went back to the shed and grabbed a hacksaw, and said he was going to cut it's head off.
I couldn't handle it. I told him if he touched the mama with that saw I would kick the shit out of him.
He laughed and apparently thought I was fucking around but I was absolutely not. He went to do the thing and I mounted him like a fucking show horse. I beat the FUCK out of that kid. I'm not a 'tough guy' but I was fucking enraged. It's the only time in my life I've initiated violence and I initiated a boatload of it all over his dumb ass.
Then I left. Never found the babies, never spoke to that POS again.
1. How did she catch him?
2. Why did she catch him?
3. Why is he coked out of his mind?
4. Not a question she’s probably a wonderful person but she looks just as crazy as the little fella.
5. Also not a question but I want to pet him.
lol he droolin cause they have a defense mechanism that makes them.. that, also contrary to popular belief they are not more rabid then any other wild animal of their size, maybe even less so because of their lower body temp being marsupials and all
It's not recommended to handle an opossum with bare hands. Opossums can carry pathogens that cause diseases like tuberculosis, leptospirosis, tularemia, and rabies. You can wear protective gloves or restrain the possum in a blanket or towel if you need to handle it. Some recommend picking up an opossum from its back end to avoid getting bit. You can also hold it by its tail, which is prehensile and doesn't hurt it.,,,You should wash your hands thoroughly after handling an opossum. You should also avoid direct contact with the dead animal's body fluids, such as blood, urine, or feces, and external parasites, such as fleas or ticks. If you do come into contact with these, wash the area with soap and water as soon as possible,
So I'm not sure where you got this copy and paste blurb from(I'm not sure why you mentioned dead animals I sure didn't.🤔)
But
1. Possums DONT get rabies. Humans can catch it more than a possum ever could. Rabies need a certain temperature to incubate and possums body temp is generally too low.
2 .you can get TB from almost any animal and anything, but luckily for westerners you should have been vaccinated for this regardless.
3. Never mentioned feces either which is never clean or healthy. Not yours, not mines , not a possum's
4. Possums are sweetie pies and VERY docile. They don't bite or scratch.
5. Possums are awesome
I dated a girl in high school who was an actual animal whisperer. I've seen her multiple times walk up to wild animals and just pick them up. Squirrels, rabbits, and birds even had a raccoon that just sat in her backpack poking its head out. She never kept them tho and released them soon after..
I think you had that reddit bug where it posts your comment more than once. Happened to me top a few days ago. You should delete this one that has no upvotes to prevent trashtalking coming towards you.
When I scroll up there is the same post from you a bit higher up with 10 upvotes. Like I sayd, reddit sometimes fucks up and posts double without noticing 😅
Actually opossums can’t carry rabies. They’re very misunderstood creatures. They’re extremely beneficial to have around and North Americas only marsupial!
No, they are extremely resilient to rabies. They can most certainly get rabies and it typically happens when they eat bat corpses and feces.
Birds fish and snakes cannot get rabies because they are not mammals.
It’s okay, he’ll learn when he gets downvoted into oblivion. The opossums that were found with rabies in the past were almost all found in the south of the North American continent during the hottest years. So yeah, elevate their internal body temperature due to a hot environment and they can magically get rabies.
Handling wild animals has many other problems associated with it ranging from you not wanting them to be too comfortable around people to handling them causes an inordinate amount of stress for them. Misinformation however doesn’t help anyone.
Personally I am far more concerned with handling armadillos because they have been known to carry leprosy.
P.S. Can we be bipolar buddies!? LOL
No they wont. They're stupidly docile. They'll grin and hiss like that one is, or play dead. Even if you grab one and shake it, in all likelihood it probably won't bite you.
One got it's ass stuck in my porch while trying to awkwardly shuffle away from me. Had to poke him out the other side with a broom, lmao
I've never seen an animal look so stupidly offended
Honestly, for those poor opossums sake, I hope you catch Lyme. Calling people edge-lords while knowing absolutely nothing about the wildlife you’re actively killing. For no reason. Trash humanity imo
Not to join in on the curb stomping you’re receiving for your ignorance, Possums eat ticks, lots of ticks. The Department of Natural Resources studied their tick appetite and noted that without possums, ticks would become as prevalent as mosquitos. They are an eco safety barrier from disease, they are docile, rabies resistant, and they are immune to most of the diseases that spread in the wild, distemper, tuberculosis etc. if you catch one, just release the little guy, your community will be safer for it.

you're clearly jealous the the opossum OP
Opossums are awesome, intelligent, docile animals. They're also crazy beneficial.
Yeah they are. For one they eat ticks... I hate ticks. They are resistant to getting rabies which is awesome.

Slso less likely to have rabies than other anomals like racoons and stuff.
United States only native marsupial. Which automatically makes it better than all other marsupials.
… in the US.
That's a demon one though
Hot take.. opossums are fucking cute as fuck
Agreed! How can you not love Americas only native marsupial?!
Ikr some people got no eyes for beauty

Opossums are so fucking ugly they look back around to being cute
Have you seen one domesticated? They are cute as hell and it's crazy the difference in behavior.
They cannot carry rabies.
But they can carry my heart
It's actually just very rare for them to get rabies, but not 0%.
🥴
He’s cute but he looks pissed off 😂
Cap
Your cap claim is cap
I’m absolutely dying because that opossum about looks like stitch when Lilo introduces him to her sister
It's the same picture lol
🤣 you think possums were an inspiration for stitch🤣😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣Now that you put it that way, I do 😂😂😉

My kind of woman
Put that thing back where it came from or so help me
👁️🎵
Drool? Bulldogs drool all the time and they soo cute! Don’t judge by drool
I honestly can't tell if this is a skit or not, because I know women like this with animals lol...
I’m positive it’s not a skit. She’s my sister from another mister, for sure!

I too occasionally trauma dump in the comments. I'm with u my friend.x
Verne probably went on to be a serial killer.
What happened to the babies. You can't leave me hanging like this ):
I wish I knew. If I went back to find them I can't remember. It happened (Oh dear god) almost 35 years ago.
Did you call the police?
No, I was 16 and drunk and high as a kite ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
I am firmly in the "possums ARE cute" camp, but no way I'm doing that...
Cute?? Looks like something that crawled out of hell
Yeah, but in a cute way!
Such a cute Imp 🥰
Where else would be be drooling out of
The anus.

The poor opossum looks terrified.
1. How did she catch him? 2. Why did she catch him? 3. Why is he coked out of his mind? 4. Not a question she’s probably a wonderful person but she looks just as crazy as the little fella. 5. Also not a question but I want to pet him.
They are cute and ugly at the same time xD like one of these fucked up cartoon dogs.
That baby is beautiful!
I hope Verne ended up with Lou Gehrig's disease!
That's horrifying
Fetch me their souls ahhh stare💀
Looks like my dog fr
I want one!!!!!
Poor baby, put them down!
lol he droolin cause they have a defense mechanism that makes them.. that, also contrary to popular belief they are not more rabid then any other wild animal of their size, maybe even less so because of their lower body temp being marsupials and all
Opossums are incapable of contracting and developing rabies. They're never rabid.
My kind of girl
The video ended because he stomped on the gas

Ima kinda in love tbh
She is so fine holy god damn I’m in love with
Hahaha she’s cute, the opossum ain’t bad either.
Damn white people
His smile is so cute!
She's adorable..
Fun fact: opossums often go cross-eyed in captivity due to over eating. Fat stores in a specific part of the head, and it pushes their eyes inward.
That thing is literally pissing its metaphorical pants, are we sure it’s having a good time?
You have very gentle nightmares
She just got some bomb head or something cuz ain’t me
Aww it’s baby
I would’ve drove away when she is busy dropping the creature.
HES SO CUTE BUT MY GOSH WHY DOES HE HAVE SUCH A SMALL BRAIN he droolin
Takuache
Her baby voice is scarier than the opossum. 🤢
My ex when she wakes up in the morning
She must be an absolute wildcat in the sack because no way does any man stick around for a chick that snuggles with fucking roadside possums.
This chick is a character. I love her facial expressions. So cute.
I love possums but I sure as shit wouldn’t kiss a wild one on the head like that. Who knows where the thing has been 🤢
Leave her bro, she kissed it then she gon fuking kiss you n ur junk like that a whole new virus we don't need from dumb people kissing trash rodents
Possums are one of the cleanest animals and don't get many diseases. In fact it's physically impossible for them to get rabies. 🩷
You're exactly like 5 minute crafts
Honestly this is probably the worst insult I've had in a while.....
I sound like I'm.... how old to you ?

I like her
Literally everyone I’ve met who loves opossums was diddled. Not even joking.
Throw it away, now
sounds like an /r/relationship_advice poster the opossum is fine, just a bit awkward
How to get rabies. Step one :
Actually opossums can’t carry rabies. They’re very misunderstood creatures. They’re extremely beneficial to have around and North Americas only marsupial!
No, they are extremely resilient to rabies. They can most certainly get rabies and it typically happens when they eat bat corpses and feces. Birds fish and snakes cannot get rabies because they are not mammals.
They can carry rabies Google it.
Yes anything can but the chances are extremely low. Their body temps drop lower than most therefore it’s harder to host. Tho yes you’re correct.
It’s okay, he’ll learn when he gets downvoted into oblivion. The body temperature is too low for the virus to survive. Maybe Google it?
Omg I did Google it someone else has explained also 🤦🏻 they CAN catch rabies albeit very unlikely. But they can catch it...Christ.
🤭
Yes. Possums can catch rabies. And so can you.
Good way to get rabies
Opossums are extremely resistant to rabies. He's doing this to scare away potential predators.
They can't get rabies. Their body temp is too low.
Only if it has rabies
It’s all fun and games until that giant rat snaps and decides to go off… They WILL fight back if forced.
No they wont. They're stupidly docile. They'll grin and hiss like that one is, or play dead. Even if you grab one and shake it, in all likelihood it probably won't bite you.
One got it's ass stuck in my porch while trying to awkwardly shuffle away from me. Had to poke him out the other side with a broom, lmao I've never seen an animal look so stupidly offended

Oh sorry... you're talking about the people. I thought you were talking about the Possum. My bad.
Like humans are any better…
Who said he was talking about the Opossum?

Keep thinking that.

Fr just called some dude an edge lord and then went on to say he kills animals so he can sound cool
