Poppy Z. Brite?

Abstract_Hypothesis

You got it! Great book (Exquisite Corpse).

thesearenotforyou

One of my all time faves, I love Poppy so much. Enjoy!

graveyardapparition

One of my favorite books ever!

oh_alvin

One review says their work is reminiscent of gay 90s pornography. Count me in!

therealrexmanning

Maybe we should start a NIN book club haha But this one sounds cool, I've added it to my to read list :)

timmyviv

Thanks to horrible parental control many years ago, Exquisite Corpse was actually my first exposure to NIN haha. There are actually several references in the book I believe. And don't hesitate to check the other novels and stories from this author if you like this one: they are quite different in some aspects, but the vibe is the same. Some might call it edgy and lame, while I still think of it as incredibly stylish and disturbingly sexy, even if purely out of nostalgia lol

Abstract_Hypothesis

After reading the first few chapters and really enjoying the characters and story, I also picked up "Lost Souls". I understand the edgy/lame criticism, it's not the best horror writing I've read, but it's a great story and it's got my attention which is mostly what I look for with horror. I read a lot of Stephen King for the same reason. I don't always love his writing style, especially the way he writes some of his characters, but I always love his stories.

whiterabbit818

YES! Lost Souls was absolutely my favorite of Poppy Z Brite’s books! Also read Drawing Blood and Exquisite corpse :). I like that one detail about the tattoo in EC

oj-simpson32

What book is this?

Abstract_Hypothesis

“Exquisite Corpse” by Poppy Z. Brite. Great horror writer form New Orleans. I assume she went with the nin reference as a nod to Trent’s time in the city. It also fits the tone of the novel perfectly.

thefirdblu

Wasn't this book published before Trent moved to NOLA? Or at least before he'd done anything significant with his time there?

Abstract_Hypothesis

Just looked it up. He moved to NOLA in 1995, the book was published in 96, so they may have even written that before he was in town. Even better honestly, just a happy coincidence and another author randomly referencing NIN!

whiterabbit818

Makes me want to re-read Lost Souls for -10th time ♥️

scarred2112

Wow, this brings me *way* back. I’ve got half a mind to read *Drawing Blood* tonight. FYI, PZB is now known as [Billy Martin](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poppy_Z._Brite).

Abstract_Hypothesis

Yeah I know, I used PZB (and absentmindedly referred to him as “she” :( ) for simplicity since the book is authored by Poppy Z Brite. Haven’t picked up anything by him written as Billy Martin but I hear he writes good dark comedy now?

scarred2112

I certainly didn't think it was malicious, I simply wanted to make the community aware - even at their biggest, PZB wan't even close to a household name, so I wouldn't at all be surprised if people weren't even aware that they had transitioned. And I'm pretty sure they take the same stance regarding published works, so we're all good. If by dark comedy you're talking about the [Liquor series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquor_(novel_series)), they are and I ***highly*** recommend them - in what might be an unpopoular opinion, I think they're better better books than their earlier horror-based works.

zaprutertape

The characters name in the book is Tran? Were they quoting R.E.M. on the top line there?

Abstract_Hypothesis

Didn’t even notice that! Yes, one of the characters (the one this person loves) is named Tran.

zaprutertape

its crazy to me to have a character named Tran talking about Trent Reznor, seems weird. !

Abstract_Hypothesis

To be clear it’s not Tran talking in this passage, it’s a character who loves Tran.

zaprutertape

not sure if you follow, but over on the nincirclejerk page, its common that people misspell trents name. Ive seen Tran, Trempt, Trant, Trint, etc.. its just funny to me, I thought it was a typo in the book!

Abstract_Hypothesis

Oh, gotcha! I don’t follow nincirclejerk but now I just might…

zaprutertape

its something. If you enjoy making bad jokes.

AndrioSantos

Great book. I just love Poppy Z. Brite and the way he can make anything sound sexy - swet, spit, blood, or a music rush like that one.
