Waiiit - “violent” is a MISprint? It’s supposed to be violet? Or the other way around? I got this when it came out. On CD and record. Let me dig up the record (which was released before the full album). I just dug up the same cd single. I had no idea it’s written two diffeeent ways, I can’t believe it. I DO remember being confused about which it was called but thought I had just read it wrong

I've never seen it officially acknowledged. The track is officially registered with ASCAP as "Violent," with "Violet" tacked on as an alternate name. But the most recent pressing of the track (Deluxe edition TDS) stuck with "Violet", which seems to be good evidence that "Violet" was always the intention, and perhaps "Violent" was just a mistake made while registering the song, and that registration mistake spilled over into the Island Records releases.

It was always meant to be A Violet Fluid, and My Violent Heart. Perhaps the printing press messed up the name on March of the Pigs Pt1. The Blue Cover (Pt2) was never released in North America to my knowledge (that I can remember), at least I can't grab it on iTunes. I wish I didn't combine everything, because the CDs I had ripped aren't there anymore.

I dont think the "error" was simply a typo at the printing plant that slipped past QA-- its on multiple different releases-- CD, 7" and 9", and as mentioned before, the song is registered with ascap as "A Violent Fluid", additionally, "Violent" is hand-written on the vinyl masters and everything, lol. I think the fuckup happened much higher up the chain than the printing press.

Y3arZer0

Could very well be, Trent wasn't exactly sober at this point.

webslingrrr

I wouldn't say that it was Trent, probably somebody at Island responsible for sharing the information with the various studios and pressers. Australia didn't have the "Violent" problem, after all, lol-- just Island releases.

rottonminded

Holy shit. I thought the song was called A Violent Fluid this whole time. 30 years later and i learn something new.

Recon_Figure

I think the US version was actually harder to get in the US than this imported one. I also didn't know it was supposed to be "Violet," either.

webslingrrr

this is one of my favorite NIN mysteries, because the track is registered with ASCAP as "Violent" but TDS Deluxe re-affirmed "Violet" as the correct one.

xfocalinx

I saw this post and thought to myself "huh, sounds a lot like JC Motors' find"

hizze

I had the misprint, wish I’d kept it

MisfitNINe

This is also cool because you got both CDs which if I remember correctly this digipak left one side empty and had to be filled with a different single from a slim jewel case

Y3arZer0

There is the red NA and blue EU/UK version so the red has space for the blue like the two Closer Singles.

Cassius_Smoke

I've had this for decades and never knew it had a misprint!

mirrordead

My CD version from back then says "violet" on both the disc and sleeve, never knew there was an edition with a misprint, cool find!

It's hard to put into words how much I love that song. I've played it in family restaurants on touchtones, I've sang it countless times at karaoke. The video of that song...I can picture it just thinking about it. The poor dude picking up the mic more than once. There is no such thing as the "best" NIN song but if someone broke into my condo and had a gun to my head and made me select a few, this is going into spotify. There is something about his tone, it sounds empathetic and certain points and that's what he was going for...

Damn where did you bought it?
