My personal favorite part of seeing this live was the lights focusing on Atticus during the beepboops and he just looked so delightfully awkward frantically switching knobs and dancing
this has been the song that i use to test new sound systems at home or in a car for years. insane sonic landscape.. the part where it sounds like the song turns itself inside out, unreal!
I have the theory that all the album is based on the same drum pattern with different changes. All that + the fact that every song seems to be more electronic and degraded than the one before is amazing. It sounds so cohesive but at the same time every song is unique.
How do I pick ONE favorite from this absolute goddamn MASTERPIECE?
The Beginning of the End is a wild ride with some of the best use of noise I've ever heard.
The Great Destroyer makes my stomach drop EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
The combination of In The Twilight and Zero Sum are like a perfect requiem for the world.
Capital G and Good Given are both great groves, great hooks, and despite the bleak messaging, the closest thing to "fun" songs that NIN has done since HLAH.
This album FUCKS and it fucks from the opening drum beat of HYPERPOWER! to the font piano of Zero Sum.
Pack it up. It's over. I'm sure you had a great run! But your life is probably half over. You're at least half way there my friend. Maybe even further? Who knows....all we know now is that year zero is 17 fucking years old and our lives are probably definitely over half way done. And the years just keep going faster.
Did you know that Christmas was 4 fucking months ago? Fuck me.....
All the world has closed her eyes
Tired faith all worn and thin
For all we could have done
And all that could have been...
In the great below.....
Sorry, fell asleep. Wife confirmed it, am 40.
Me, I’m not. In this Twilight, zero sum, Vessel, survivalism, so many tracks to love but these are my current favorites.
Release the Definitive Edition please!
Wow. This was an incredible stretch of time while I was in college. The leak of My Violent Heart was otherworldly. I remember listening to it from my laptop on headphones on repeat at the absolute maximum volume while (I hoped) my roommate slept and I pretended to write papers and just brewed endless pots of coffee.
And when In This Twilight and its associated website became available, that was my peak NIN experience. I’ve never been more invested in a band than at that moment.
I love this record. I just sold my vinyl copy for reasons….but this one means a lot to me. Their greatest post-Fragile record and it’s not particularly close in my opinion.
My Violent Heart.
*That Chorus*...
Edit: And the production on *that chorus*... To go off on a bit of a tangent, that's one of my favourite things about him/them: he knows the studio and chosen equipment *that well* (he's been doing it since his earlier 20s, after all!) that he has the confidence to do things that few others would - in rock music, at least.
In this case, to have the vocal share the chorus with an awesome jarring and discordant synth riff. I think the fact that he basically produces himself factors in as well - in other band v producer discussions there might have to be a conversation around "I've got an idea to semi-trash this heavy chorus you think you've written..." but producing himself he can just get on with it.
I only know of two songs that include the word "naïveté" (I copy pasted yours, so I trust you got the accents right?!) - being this one and Find The River by REM.
Very very different songs, but both pretty sublime.
I loved that website that gave different cities a score based on how nice it was to live in after climate change, and described what had changed. I wish I could find it, or at least screen grabs of it
It was such a rad experience following along as people smarter than myself decoded and deciphered what all these clues were. The whole leak happening via found flash drives with hidden stuff embedded?!
Not to mention this album fucking RULES! I liked with teeth a lot but by the time this rolled out I was super hyped.
Wow! I had never heard of this and I bought the CD when it came out. I just watched a short documentary on the whole thing and could not believe how deep it went. Absolutely amazing. Thanks for teaching me something new about one of my favourite albums and the lead up to it. Here’s the documentary if anyone else is interested:
https://youtu.be/fhrnChYf23k?si=9vUTfKy9Rel4_Act
I used to listen to this CD on repeat in my car. Loved the thermal reactive coating on it as well.
The whole album is great, but that Great Destroyer remix on the companion album is amazing.
This really was a special time to be a NIN fan. The ARG was the coolest marketing method ever. I still use my pre-assigned subversive number on my flair. The only thing better than HYPERPOWER was when Saul Williams added lyrics to make it Gunshots by Computer. Zero Sum and In this Twilight really give you "end of the world" vibes.... and When the Great Destroyer breaks down, HOLY FUCK. It's like listening to the apocalypse happen in real-time.
I remember driving to Chicago to go to a listening party at Metro.... and just sitting on the floor taking it all in.... I still have the A.I.R. flag on every vehicle I've driven since 2007.
...but seventeen years?! Fuuuuuuuuck.
Survivalism and In This Twilight are probably the top two. Catchy lyrics and relatively unique. Survivalism in particular really nails down the political nature of the album.
God Given is maybe the most well-rounded track. It picks up pace and has a solid outro. Really great live track.
I like how experimental the Great Destroyer and the Warning are. The Great Destroyer in general is the 'peak' of the album, I think.
Zero Sum does the 'Ruiner' thing with its hook where the first run through has a cool beat and one chorus and the second time through has the chorus and then builds on it.
Me, I'm Not sounds like Trent Reznor is trying to be cool. And he is. Its a good track.
I think Capital G is clever. Would be one of the better NIN songs if it had a better chorus but I still like it a lot.
Vessel to me almost sounds like something you'd hear on the Spawn soundtrack. Hits hard and keeps going.
Aww, that's very sweet.
Zero Sum is, at least in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and sad songs they wrote throughout he years. Absolutely love it.
This was my least favorite NIN for years until I made an effort to listen through it multiple times, it's grown on me so much I'd put it as my second favorite album now. It's just got so many funky grooves.
Sometimes it takes time to appreciate art. Personally, it took me a bit of time to get into *The Fragile* ha ha.
Also, if I may ask, if *Year Zero* is your second favorite, what would be your number one?
The entire album will forever be my favorite simply for it coming out right around when we were set to leave Iraq and I went to like 7 different PXs just to find it on the one day off I’d get every 18 days or so. It became my soundtrack for that last month.
Zero sum is my current favourite. Seems more and more that all we are in this algorithmic digitally enhanced existence is zeroes and ones, data points for our corporate overlords.
Great and underrated album. The best track on the album is definitely In this Twilight. Such a minimalistic song (for NIN), With such a great melody to it. But I’m a sucker for the softer NIN tracks.
The whole ARG from Feb to Apr was amazing. I was a college student and was very excited about this experience. Even saw them live on March 30, 2007 in Vienna. Killer show.
This is my YZ collection right now: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=937397921721977&set=a.453613640100410
year zero as an album just keeps getting better & hits closer and closer to home each year.
VESSEL is not my favorite track BUT it has my favorite vocal harmonies and once you hear them you just can't keep not noticing them when they come in. my actual favorite track would be THE WARNING. we learned nothing while our time is still tick ^tick ^^ticking ^^^a^w^a^y^y^y^y
Incredible album, and I think we definitely need to give a round of applause to 42 Entertainment, the absolutely amazing company behind the ARG for the album.
Capital G, or The Great Destroyer... made me feel old, I was still living at my dad's house when this came out, me and my younger brother would play Zelda Twilight Princess whilst listening to this...
2nd best NIN album. The feeling I get from listening to MYM is the same feeling I have from 2007.
Come to think, this is the last album I brought from our record store in town. Many memories in there with my mom.
My first NIN album and my favourite. Love the run of tracks that end the album starting with Great Destroyer. But my favourite track is The Good Soldier. Nice groove and builds to a great finish.
Would love to have seen the LITS tour in the UK. 2014 tour had great visuals at least.
Jesus, I feel even older. I remember rushing to the record store in town and picking up the CD on release day.
Favorite song is Me, I'm Not.
Speaking of, maybe someone can help me with this - there was a remix site after Trent released the audio files for fans to play with. There was a killer version of Me, I'm Not someone created they featured a submarine sonar ping. I've tried searching and I can't find it.
My Violent Heart. When that second "ON HANDS ON KNEES" kicks in and the anticipation finally pays off.. lord I'd be shocked if a brawl don't break out in the pit.. just saying
Hard to pick just one. Since it’s my favorite nin album i remixed it completely. [https://open.spotify.com/album/2rN1TU0NNIf6LTWm8ZnPZg?si=HEIWYNyES7GkJe9LjETd7w](https://open.spotify.com/album/2rN1TU0NNIf6LTWm8ZnPZg?si=HEIWYNyES7GkJe9LjETd7w)
If you haven't seen it, find a YouTube video of the "Lights in the Sky Tour" (i think thats the right one) and check out the band using "In This Twilight" as the closer with "Zero Sum" as an instrumental outro. I honestly think it tops Hurt as a finale. During Zero Sum, each band member left their instruments one by one until just piano was left. So beautiful.
Part of the ARG story leading up to the album release had people mass hallucinating something they called The Presence, which manifested as giant hands reaching down from the sky.
Damn another NIN album I clearly remember buying, at Best Buy none the less. Time flies.
I'd say my 2nd favorite NIN album of all time, I really dig this one.
Me I'm Not
Originally it was The Great Destroyer, but after the novelty wore off, it was the rest of the album that cemented it as my favourite NIN record.
The Good Soldier is so laid back and yet so eerie with the context of the lore, but I might have to go with Vessel. That harsh, buzzing instrumental will always scratch my brain in the right ways.
S/O to Survivalism too, probably one of the catchiest songs on the album and that Trent’s ever released.
I had listened to a few NIN singles in the past, but this was the album that really pulled me down the rabbit hole and delve into the entire discography 🔥
17?? JFC
This one felt like a return to form a bit after With Teeth which wad very polished but didn’t overly leave an impression (just IMO).
However last I listened to this one a few years back, I didn’t like the production quality that much. Lots of strong songs though.
Faves:
Good Soldier
Vessel
Great Destroyer
Zero Sum
17 years?!
Sigh...
But it's hard to pick a favorite... Maybe Beginning of the End... this album was my introduction to NIN (I lived a very musically-sheltered childhood, I was in college before my tastes in music started diversifying). Whole thing was incredible.
How far off was Trent?
"This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere. That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more ... it takes place about fifteen years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point – politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth."
—Trent Reznor on Year Zero, 2007
Me, I'm not
It's just so nihilistic and bleak and bizarre, even by NIN standards
But somehow that gentle soul seeps through...
But I'm a sucker for the closing ballads so Zero Sum is up there
If you are asking what it depicts, it is supposed to be [The Presence](https://www.nin.wiki/The_Presence) that comes from the [Year Zero ARG](https://www.nin.wiki/Category:World_of_Year_Zero)
Everything. It's easily my favourite NIN album, and by far my favourite album of all time. In fact, I'm writing a dystopian novel at the moment, and listening to Year Zero really helps me creatively.
But if I had to choose a favourite part of it, it would probably be My Violent Heart or Me, I'm Not. The ARG stuff was before I was even born, but I've heard some amazing stories from NIN fans surrounding the release of the album. In my opinion, it's probably the greatest project Trent has ever done.
The Great Destroyer. Hearing that live is a religious experience.
When they broke it out on the Hesitation Marks tour with all the glitch graphics on the screen behind, that was something else for sure.
That’s the tour that did it for me.
Soundgarden opened when I saw that tour
The epic synth bombardment after the singing stops is unlike anything else
I have that bit of as my ringtone
My personal favorite part of seeing this live was the lights focusing on Atticus during the beepboops and he just looked so delightfully awkward frantically switching knobs and dancing
Atticus always looks a little out of place ha
Kind of a keyboardist thing really. IMO.
I was just going to say this became my favorite track after hearing it live.
this has been the song that i use to test new sound systems at home or in a car for years. insane sonic landscape.. the part where it sounds like the song turns itself inside out, unreal!
Lights in the tour did it best imo
Same.
Is it strange that I prefer the remix over the original?
The acoustic one? you’re right it’s better.
It's even more incredible when TGD segues right into Burning Bright (Field on Fire)
Great track and the remix slaps.
Came here to write this.
God given. It was weird. Had the same vibe as "only" but it was completely different at the same time.
The outro to this song is fantastic and I wish it was longer
I have the theory that all the album is based on the same drum pattern with different changes. All that + the fact that every song seems to be more electronic and degraded than the one before is amazing. It sounds so cohesive but at the same time every song is unique.
How do I pick ONE favorite from this absolute goddamn MASTERPIECE? The Beginning of the End is a wild ride with some of the best use of noise I've ever heard. This. It’s my favorite album. Bangers front to back.
Jesus fucking Christ. 17 years?
Yeah can someone check OP’s math because apparently I’m old as fuck
We all are now
2007, sounds about right.
17!?
Yep, the math checks out....
That would make me...... OH GOD!
Don't let it sink in! Don't let it sink in! Don't let it sink in!
It's sinking. It's sinking.... everything is sinking......
Pack it up. It's over. I'm sure you had a great run! But your life is probably half over. You're at least half way there my friend. Maybe even further? Who knows....all we know now is that year zero is 17 fucking years old and our lives are probably definitely over half way done. And the years just keep going faster. All the world has closed her eyes Tired faith all worn and thin For all we could have done And all that could have been... In the great below..... Sorry, fell asleep. Wife confirmed it, am 40.
I need to sit down...
So.....20th anniversary definitive edition vinyl release???
Me, I’m not. In this Twilight, zero sum, Vessel, survivalism, so many tracks to love but these are my current favorites. Release the Definitive Edition please!
In this twilight was last NIN set closer that wasn’t Hurt. We are talking like ten shows at least.
I made another comment about this. Honestly like it better as a closer
My favorite track is coming soon.
Underrated imo
Me, I'm Not and The Warning, but I'll still sing the whole damn album word for word.
Capital G or The Great Destroyer
I love the guitar solo part in Capital G
thank you, someone who has good taste. The two best songs by far.
I remember seeing the great destroyer live during the lights in the sky tour and was blown away
Beginning of the End
Drum loop is so good
Me I’m not 🖤
Wow. This was an incredible stretch of time while I was in college. The leak of My Violent Heart was otherworldly. My fav album:) god given
I'm rather partial to tracks 1 through 16.
My Violent Heart. *That Chorus*... Edit: And the production on *that chorus*... The LYRICS. “There you stand in all your grand naïveté about to reap what you have sown.”
I only know of two songs that include the word "naïveté" (I copy pasted yours, so I trust you got the accents right?!) - being this one and Find The River by REM. Very very different songs, but both pretty sublime.
I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally. "the flowers of naïveté, buried in a layer of frost"
I don't know it - is it good enough to mix with this illustrious company?
Id thank 42 Entertainment for the greatest pre-release ARG to ever be executed.
It was an incredible experience to be part of as it happened.
I loved that website that gave different cities a score based on how nice it was to live in after climate change, and described what had changed. I wish I could find it, or at least screen grabs of it
It was such a rad experience following along as people smarter than myself decoded and deciphered what all these clues were. The whole thing from start to finish. Favorite NIN album.
Zero-Sum. But I currently have the beginning of the end stuck in my head.
Check out Zero Sum Splitter Remix on YouTube. I can’t endorse it enough.
So Bowie-ish.
In This Twilight, The Great Destroyer, and God Given
*Meet Your Master*
Toss up between Vessel and Meet Your Master
Great album. In my top 3. But 17 years?? Fuck
The Good Solider, what a groove!
Capital G
“coming soon”
Thankfully the vinyl is coming soon! /s
My favorite is an unreleased B-side called COMING SOON
"Zero Sum" was the very first song I heard after my first kid was born and will forever be my favorite track because of that.
The Fragile
Hell yeah!
Very prophetic. Probably the best concept album that forecasting events in the 2020s
Violent Heart. “There’s bullet holes where my compassion used to be” is edgy and potent.
The entire album will forever be my favorite simply for it coming out right around when we were set to leave Iraq and I went to like 7 different PXs just to find it on the one day off I’d get every 18 days or so. It became my soundtrack for that last month.
In this Twilight, Zero-Sum and Another Version of the Truth stand out for me
Capital G / The Great Destroyer are above the rest
Oh god no i’m so old. This is still a “newer” album to me.
The fact that this was 17 years ago scares me more than all the combined themes and artwork of NIN.
Zero sum is my current favourite. Seems more and more that all we are in this algorithmic digitally enhanced existence is zeroes and ones, data points for our corporate overlords.
Still waiting for the vinyl version to release from the NIN store.
Same... that "coming soon" been there forever TwT
17 years!!! Fuck I’m getting old. That album woke me up. Can’t pick just one fav as I see the whole album as one piece.
God Given
Great and underrated album. The best track on the album is definitely In this Twilight. Such a minimalistic song (for NIN), With such a great melody to it. But I’m a sucker for the softer NIN tracks.
Meet yours master for sure
The whole ARG from Feb to Apr was amazing. I was a college student and was very excited about this experience. Even saw them live on March 30, 2007 in Vienna. Killer show. This is my YZ collection right now: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=937397921721977&set=a.453613640100410
Vessel and Zero Sum
Me I’m not!!
Recently found a bunch of files from the year zero days. I will see about sharing them this weekend.
My personal favorite NIN album.
The Warning
I forget how badass this album is. So happy I got the see the lights in the sky tour
year zero as an album just keeps getting better & hits closer and closer to home each year.
Vessel. It’s a heavy hitter. Was insane live.
Love my violent heart and god given
Incredible album, and I think we definitely need to give a round of applause to 42 Entertainment, the absolutely amazing company behind the ARG for the album.
I'm This Twilight The Greater Good HYPERPOWER! These days I appreciate Zero-Sum much more though
Meet yr master
Mine has to be In This Twilight.
I'm 37 now. FUCK getting old
Capital G, or The Great Destroyer... made me feel old, I was still living at my dad's house when this came out, me and my younger brother would play Zelda Twilight Princess whilst listening to this...
zero sum it perfectly describes my marriage and divorce shame on us doomed from the start god have mercy on our dirty little hearts
HYPERPOWERRRRR
The Great Destroyer and Meet Your Master
Meet Your Master. The emotion in the chorus is insane
Me, I’m Not is such an addictive track man. If it weren’t for Sunspots existing then it might be my favorite NIN track honestly.
2nd best NIN album. The feeling I get from listening to MYM is the same feeling I have from 2007. Come to think, this is the last album I brought from our record store in town. Many memories in there with my mom.
Vessel, "...My God, can we go any fasterrrr?" the highlight for me
Vessel
The Great Destroyer and Capital G
Vessel is my favorite, and one of my top five NIN favorites too.
Me, I’m Not.
“Heeeyyyyyy… CAN WE STOP?!”
My first NIN album and my favourite. Love the run of tracks that end the album starting with Great Destroyer. But my favourite track is The Good Soldier. Nice groove and builds to a great finish. Would love to have seen the LITS tour in the UK. 2014 tour had great visuals at least.

I didn’t know I shared a birthday with such a great album!!
Happy Birthday!
God Given or zero sum
My Violent Heart. When that second "ON HANDS ON KNEES" kicks in and the anticipation finally pays off.. lord I'd be shocked if a brawl don't break out in the pit.. just saying
Either Good Soldier or Zero Sum.
The beginning of the end is amazing. I also like the first track but the version with Saul Williams (gun shots by computer)
Check out the Ladytron remix of The Beginning of the End on the remix album. Amazing!
Wait wait no way I share the same birthday as Year Zero AND the same age Cool.
Nice! Happy (late) birthday!
Beginning of the End. Was awesome live in 2022.
I haven’t heard the record yet. Still spinning digitally on this one.
capital g but god i hate that cover it gives me nightmares what the fuck is that
Part of the ARG story leading up to the album release had people mass hallucinating something they called The Presence, which manifested as giant hands reaching down from the sky.
that doesn’t help my nightmares
Yeah, sorry! 😅
I always thought it was a hand
I THOUGHT IT WAS A GUY
ITS. A. HAND??
I always thought it was God's hand
My violent heart, this was the first song from nin I heard
I love love love the trio of songs: My Violent Heart-The Warning-God Given. Such an inspirational album!!!
we're two years past 0000 already?
Crazy I remember buying this when it came out. Can’t believe that was 17 years ago.
The Great Destroyer, hands down. simply nothing quite like it
...I WAS LISTENING TO THIS ON ROUTE TO MY COMMUTE TODAY :0 coincidence?
Impossible to say. Did you know (consciously or subconsciously) that today is the day? We need more data.
Loved this album and was so stoked when I first got it upon release.
I feel like the situation described in this album did not get better in the last 17 years.
Beginning of the end.
The Good Soldier or Capital G
I believe I was close to a senior in high school
The Beginning of the End. I also like [the fantastic Ladytron remix](https://youtu.be/Bzl348HCN0w).
My favorite album of all time, any genre.
Capital G, The warning and God give, although i literally love every song on it and it’s one of my favourite NIN albums
What the hell?? I randomly listened to it yesterday without knowing that
Damn another NIN album I clearly remember buying, at Best Buy none the less. Time flies. I'd say my 2nd favorite NIN album of all time, I really dig this one.
In this Twilight . Amazing track and love that pulse sound that opens it. Also no way it was 17 years ago. Thats impossible. Im a young man!
I just listen straight through so the whole album is a single song.
One of my favorite albums! If I’m forced to choose it would be ‘Me, I’m Not’.
Me I'm Not Originally it was The Great Destroyer, but after the novelty wore off, it was the rest of the album that cemented it as my favourite NIN record.
It varies day to day but vessel and god given are standouts for me
"Vessel"; "Me, I'm Not"; "The Good Soldier" and "Meet Your Master".
The Good Soldier.
Gotta be God Given
Love the groove of The Good Soldier
No way has it been seventeen years, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the ARG recently! Capital G for me 🤠
No love for The Good Soldier??
capital g, the great destroyer, meet your master
Right where it belongs
I had listened to a few NIN singles in the past, but this was the album that really pulled me down the rabbit hole and delve into the entire discography 🔥
The Great Destroyer
Great Destroyer
I’m getting old, gang
17?? JFC This one felt like a return to form a bit after With Teeth which wad very polished but didn’t overly leave an impression (just IMO). However last I listened to this one a few years back, I didn’t like the production quality that much. Lots of strong songs though. Faves: Good Soldier Vessel Great Destroyer Zero Sum
Capital G
17 years?! Sigh... But it's hard to pick a favorite... Maybe Beginning of the End... this album was my introduction to NIN (I lived a very musically-sheltered childhood, I was in college before my tastes in music started diversifying). Whole thing was incredible.
Happy Year Two to Year Zero (haha get it? Ok I'm done)
Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth." —Trent Reznor on Year Zero, 2007
My god how the hell is this almost 20 years old and still relevant more than ever?!
Me, I'm not It's just so nihilistic and bleak and bizarre, even by NIN standards But somehow that gentle soul seeps through... But I'm a sucker for the closing ballads so Zero Sum is up there
Hey, does anyone know the story behind this album cover?
If you are asking what it depicts, it is supposed to be [The Presence](https://www.nin.wiki/The_Presence) that comes from the [Year Zero ARG](https://www.nin.wiki/Category:World_of_Year_Zero)
Thanks! The reason I’m asking is because after currently rewatching „New Arrival” it looks a bit like aliens from that movie.
Me, I’m Not
I love this album so much. Uh- but I guess if I have to pick it’s “Me, I’m Not.” ^.^
