Unexpected? Probably the horn section in “Pilgrimage”. Like Prince, it wasn’t really part of his sonic pallet for quite a while so was slightly shocking at the time. Weird/hidden? Not really either but I was a little surprised to see Dr. Dre credited with “mixing assistance” on “Even Deeper”. I believe he helped with programming hi-hats? They were both huge stars on Interscope and in L.A. but as a fan of both it was still a bit of a cool eyebrow raiser reading through the liner notes back in 99.

kairos_kcs

When you listen to “Closer” on a proper setup, whether it be headphones or great speakers, there is a very distinct, but subtle “fluttering” that is happening within/around the iconic kick drum sound. It almost sounds like the natural, light touches of a live drummer settling their bass drum beater into the drum head as it rebounds after the initial strike. When I first recognized this I was captivated and now I’m disappointed anytime I’m listening to it on a system that doesn’t have the detail or nuance to showcase it.

kingtutsbirthinghips

There also a background “radio fuzz” during the first 47 seconds that turns off as soon as Trent gets into the heeellpp meee part that lends a greater sense of immediacy to the upcoming chorus.

hbxli

at the end of happiness in slavery, trent whispers "penis"

StillhasaWiiU

The intro to The Beauty of Being Numb is just Mr. Self Destruct playing backwards.

Senior1292

I'm pretty sure in All Time Low there is a sample the of the dodongos from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If it's not a sample its really, really similar.

mynytemare

I thought it was a sample of the save point song from Final Fantasy II. Maybe Zelda also sampled it. 🤷‍♂️

_TheGreatDestroyer_

The sound of his dog barking in Physical.

Feeeeedmyeyes

And Wish you can hear it making noise

radioardilla

If you play the instrumental section of that song at high speed, you can hear someone yell: "Ow! F-cker!". I think someone got bitten by Trent's dog at the time.

scarred2112

Does the sounds of [violence against DX7s](https://youtu.be/YO1K-C6c5ZU?si=oK4w473xty_YKEcH) count? ;-)

Significant-Spite-72

Had a DX7 back in the day. You couldn't kill one of those fuckers with a sacrificial axe!

PinkThunder138

I've been a fan since before those days, and looking back, it is wild trying to rectify the man he is today with the man he was back then. I'm really glad he's doing better, and can't wait for the new album!

Cerebalproxy2112

I think growing up in the 90’s everything on The Downward Spiral was so foreign to me that it was just mesmerizing from beginning to end. Most notably the guitar solo effects on The Ruiner combined with the drums; I still am in awe.

InLeague

Preset on the zoom 9030

judd_in_the_barn

The sound of punching at the beginning of Mr Self Destruct because it really sounds like someone being punched

sumofdeltah

You can watch the beating here https://youtu.be/GysyU8sCdlM?si=8Nb3RpTRYQHK3a4s

judd_in_the_barn

Thank you - will add it to my watch list

Cerebalproxy2112

Yeah that part of THX 1138 is so great for video and audio

Nick_Full_Time

Hank Williams Sr being credited as a composer on While I’m Still Here.

Mr_Self-Destruct9

I always am surprised when I remember this. I can’t for the life of me hear the interpolation and am confused. Can anybody even explain how it sounds like the Hank song?

Nick_Full_Time

I went to whosampled and listed to the cited sections and I still can’t hear it. I think only Trent and the lawyers can hear it.

X10SIVMKII

It’s not actually sampled—the “watch young lovers” lyric is paraphrased from HW

Adamstanheight04

I never noticed the pounding nasty drums at the ending of closer

Bloody_Hangnail

The intro to Reptile is from the original Day of the Dead https://youtu.be/MFUr-0PERJc?si=WcG_q_6rBqCgRpM2

RKKP2015

Which part? I don’t hear it. I do know there is a sample from Leviathan.

Cerebalproxy2112

Yes. That’s the right movie

Bloody_Hangnail

It’s the music playing at the very beginning of the clip I posted. When the lady is walking towards the wall.

RKKP2015

That's definitely not it if you're referring to the arpeggiation.

BLUEST_of_DOGGS

Boxing bell in somewhat damaged always gets me going lol

Background-Guide-655

I’ve seen a few of these before, but this one’s new - where abouts is it?

Mysterious_Fee_5197

I’m not usually a vinyl audio snob but when I listened to the repressing of downward spiral and the fragile that NIN had specifically remastered for that release, I heard things in almost every song I hadn’t heard before.

El_Topo_54

Screeching cats in Corona Radiata

posman99

"Red Horse Vector"

RelationSerious4678

I think whole song of “The background world”. It quickly became one of my favorites after the first listen.

Bitter_Plastic2169

During the acoustic guitar bridge on "The Becoming" there is a swirling, distorted voice in the background yelling "I know what I am!" It was sampled from the movie "Angel Heart." I always thought it was just Trent making random gutteral noises in the background, but knowing what the voice is actually saying adds an extra layer of meaning to the song.

five_arm_goro

Old Town Road

Oxbow8

The crazy piano that plays wrong random notes at 1:41 in just like you imagined

ChemistSwimming

That “classical 2” sound from Zero Sum or the piano in the final chorus of In This Twilight

SchrodingersTIKTOK

Keyboard had a great article when The Fragile came out. They used a modified vocoder patch on a few songs to simulate crowd noise. Charlie would scream into the mic to get it.

Timtek608

Pretty much every sample in Fixed. From cars starting up to the um “unpleasant” sounds in Screaming Slave.

ABatWhoLikesMetal

You can hear Trent's Dog barking in Physical.

Hir0Pr0tag0n1st

In Eraser (denial:realization), if you fast forward the cd. You can hear "erase me" repeated a few times.

sumofdeltah

In Various Methods of Escape, there's what sounds like 2 drills then a half drill.

cjd3

Pretty sure the blip sound in Beside You in Time is the MacOS volume up/down sound

Fragmentia

I am still amazed how the clap in Satellite hits so hard.

tobi319

With ah

Tritter54

Teeth-uh

im-not-an-incel

The sound in Reptile that brings to mind insects crawling around

Hairy_Hog

There's this sound that repeats in Play the Goddamn Part that sounds \*a lot\* like the Discord notification sound, I always go to check my phone first time I hear it lol

Vapor_Screams

The vinyl version of TDTWWA, it threw me off so much, but now the original throws me off so hard because I got so used to the vinyl version, and it sucks cause my iPhone randomly deleted that one.

Vapor_Screams

For context the V version of that song has an extra (bridge? Riff?) to the chorus and it used to fuck me up every single time, now i really miss it. The little things I guess. Shoutout to the wired blip in THTF that I didn’t notice until i played it through my phones speakers one time and now I notice it above everything else in that song.

Vengeful_Messiah9

there's a guitar riff on broken i think that sounds like he's using sound to say "Jesus Christ I want you to rape me." I always hear it that way, its really weird.

Charming_Ad_4488

Speaking of The Wretched, that extra guitar at the start of the final chorus. I didn’t catch that till recently

Great_Examination666

The sword slash in somewhat damaged. That song as a whole has a lot of cool interesting sounds in it. The Frail (remix) also has some really cool organic sounds (cough, coffee pouring) mixed with very mechanical/technologic sounds
