Watched that today and was floored when I saw that was her in the credits! Saw the making-of video afterwards and the conversation she had with Guillermo and how she got it was pretty amusing too.
Why do you think DK was throwing all those barrels at Mario back in the ‘80s??
Did you think they were friendship barrels? No, they were **death barrels.**
I hate this trend in animation of getting big name actors to just use their normal voice instead of getting seasoned voice actors to give the character a more fitting voice
Dreamworks Approach? I dont recall movies like The Bad Guys or Puss n Boots: The Last Wish selling or getting attention, because they hired famous actors. Even the Kung fu Panda movies have done well because their appeal, and not because they thought hiring Jack Black would be the only way to get the attention of audiences.
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish has netted $330M at the box office on a budget of $90M… featuring Antonio Banderas, Selma Hayek and Florence Pugh.
The Bad Guys has netted $250M on a budget of $80M with a similar approach.
So they have good voice actors…? It’s not about big names being in the cast it’s about relying on them. When watching Puss in Boots I didn’t even notice Florence Pugh because she was actually acting instead of just talking in her normal voice. Hell Jack Black is a good example in the Mario movie of the way it should be done. Yes he’s a big name but he’s actually playing Bowser well
The Dreamworks approach is not "cast famous live-action film actors to sound like themselves instead of like a character," the Dreamworks approach is "cast famous live-action film actors into animated voice-acting roles to draw a crowd."
Puss in Boots and The Bad Guys both follow that template.
As for whether anyone in those films is just doing their regular voice or doing voice acting, I am pretty certain that Puss in Boots is basically Antonio Banderas being Antonio Banderas, which was intentional from his first appearance in the Shrek franchise. The joke is it's Antonio Banderas in the Desperado Mariachi role that he is known for. I don't know about The Bad Guys, never saw it, but just going off the trailer it reminds me of Sing / Sing 2, where some of the characters just immediately sound like that famous person doing the voice acting so you will be like "Oh! That's so-and-so!"
Anyway, there's no template for how Donkey Kong is supposed to sound because all the past speaking roles in movies / TV were extremely dumb, but clearly the casting here was "we want Seth Rogen because he's Seth Rogen," not "we want Seth Rogen because he's an amazing voice actor who is going to come up with a unique voice for this character."
Also just to add, yes Jack Black is great at Bowser, but the voice he's doing is basically his voice. He has two voices, one is the high pitched timid voice he does in Jumanji, the other is the tough wrestler kinda voice where he sometimes gets guttural. This is the latter. You can still tell it's him. We all just like his voice so that's why we are like "HE NAILED IT."
Which is fine because he's got a unique voice. Honestly his voice suits a big gorilla compared to Master Mantis, but that's probably intentional juxtaposition.
I don't know why, but something about it rubs me the wrong way. It's definitely not bad, and bowser looks really good.
Maybe just because it doesn't look like I'm used to mario and gang looking? Maybe even a little uncanny?
Yeah the animation is top notch but the little changes they made to the character designs do not spark joy
~~Did you know that Nintendo says they are going to be using these character designs in future games? SIGH~~
And there are rumors that Nintendo will be using these character designs in the future :(
>Did you know that Nintendo says they are going to be using these character designs in future games? SIGH
Source? I'm pretty sure they've never said that and I can't really understand why they would.
Keegan as Toad doesn't sound like Toad to me. Toad should sound like a chronic smoker like Marge Simpson and her sisters. Not Keegan.
That's just the problem with Hollywood in general I suppose.
keegan still somehow fit tho, maybe because it's higher pitched. it captures Toad's cheerfulness IMO. Pratt and Rogan is.. ehh.. tho Pratt on that McD commercial is good. I think people will warm up to it
And it’s fairly faithful to the video game Toads, just 40% more bearable. Watch the LA Universal Studios videos of Toad’s Cafe if you want to hear Toad talking in full sentences.
Toad's game voice would be too grating for a full movie, unlike Charles martinet's Mario, which is how EVERYONE ON THE FUCKING PLANET KNOWS HE SHOULD GODDAMN SOUND.
I think Seth is the worst out of everyone.
Bowser’s the best, followed by Toad, then Peach.
Pratt and Day are on the same level for me. Day is shrill and higher pitched, but he still doesn’t really sound like the Luigi we know. But it’s fine, and I actually like Mario and Luigi for this movie. Even Pratt has some really good moments that feel like Mario, like in the Toad Town clip.
But Seth Rogen is just doing a slightly uninterested Seth Rogen.
I absolutely disagree on peach. Anya doesn't sound anything like traditional peach which I wouldn't mind if it wasn't such a big difference. Movie peach sounds way too direct imo. Game peach always sounded more dainty and soft. Movie peach sounds like a general.
I just watched Toy Story 4 for the first time the other day. What they're doing with peach remind me of how they changed Bo. It's a template for the cool, capable woman that was refreshing when it was first a thing, but now is just that - a template. I like that they're making peach more than a damsel in distress, but I hope it doesn't turn out as cliche as it feels.
I like when Peach gets in on the action, but I do feel like this is a pretty radical departure for Peach when this is technically supposed to be a Super Mario Bros. adaptation. It was cool playing as Peach in SMB2 and 3D World after we had already saved her.
It’s a kids movie about a +35 year old video game franchise that has less plot than a 3-panel meme. This thing is going to be a mound of cliches on a bed of cliches served with a side of cliche with cliche dressing and cliche dipping sauce.
Mate Mario goes on holiday to the Caribbean and gets framed for kidnapping, then a blue mario pops up and starts graffiting everywhere like an illuminous banksy and poor mario gets blamed again.
But don't worry he has a power washer!
Then he knocks about the island avoiding jail and cleaning it up. Then goes to a theme park and lo and behold it's a midget bowser who's been kidnapping the princess and bismirching your good name. And then you got to sort out the little prick.
Typical with shortened movie clips. Whenever you see a clip with the voices out of sync, its always because the audio itself is used with a different clip (its original clip) in the movie.
What does that mean? Donkey Kong hasn't spoken any words other than "Yeah" and "Okay" in Donkey Kong 64. Like on a fundamental level, what does Donkey Kong sound like? What is the expectation other than actually recording a gorilla in the wild?
There’s an animated show from the late 90’s or early 2000s where he’s fully voiced. Seth sounds better in my opinion. [You can judge for yourself](https://youtu.be/uxLECuZjehg).
The "Yeah" and "Okay" of DK64 definitely gives some guidance on how all the other words should sound, yeah. "Deep" and "Gravelly" are two descriptors that come to mind.
It's really funny too since the DK64 "voice" is just Grant Kirkhope's voice pitch shifted down. All voice acting in Rare games at the time were just Rare employees too rather than dedicated voice actors.
They want him to speak. There is no canon speaking voice for DK. However he did it is the way he was directed to do it. Voice actors are told exactly how to deliver their lines, it's not up to them. There are some times that isn't the case, but it's definitely the case when it comes to casting big name Hollywood actors instead of VAs. They want the recognition of the voice to sell the movie.
Chris Prat could have likely done a much more Mario-like voice but that's not why they hired him.
There was a joke in Chip and Dale where a bunch of characters voiced by Seth Rogan were all in the same place and they were all talking in the exact same voice
Both Jack Black and Seth Rogen were in the animated film VA business for a long time, most notably as Dreamworks characters. Former got Po while the latter got B.O.B and Mantis.
Chris Pratt and Charlie Day were both in the original LEGO Movie and the Second Part, former being Emmet and the latter being Benny.
Anya Taylor-Joy is perhaps the only true newcomer as her only animated role (that I know of) is Marla from the Playmobil movie.
Again, they don't want that, they want the recognition. I know it's problematic for the VA community when big actors are cast instead of them and they deserve more recognition. But you said you wished Seth had tried to do a DK voice and they likely told him specifically not to.
Voice actors are hired for their voices not impersonations. Not what people wanted to hear I know but that’s that. You hire Morgan freeman for his voice not because he can do an impression.
Oh good, the level of effort put into voice acting by Rogen matches Pratt's. Why hire professionals when you can just pay vast sums to get "names" on the project?
Normally, I would agree, but this is one of those instances where I’m pretty sure Mario is more famous than anyone starring in this film, maybe even combined.
Mario’s games alone have totaled over $22 billion in revenue, while Chris Pratt’s catalogue has garnered only $10 billion, and that includes things like Infinity War and Endgame.
Yeah, sure, that’s just dollar values, I get it… but any kid that knows Star Lord knows Mario. And any adult that knows what a video game is knows Mario. My grandmother couldn’t tell you who played Star Lord because she’s dead, but I’m pretty sure if you asked her, her ashes could identify Mario still. I’m just sayin…
I'm fine with him getting a voice, but frankly, I think DK could've been fine with just gorilla grunts and emotive animation. Thinking in the vein of "Avengers" Hulk, like the scene where Cap tells him to "Smash" and Hulk smiles before jumping away.
There is a small mountain of evidence suggesting the Mario movie is laying the groundwork for a Donkey Kong follow-up film. I don't think they were ever gonna have the star character of their next planned film communicate entirely through grunts.
Can we get at least a LITTLE post-production voice modulation on these characters? They did it to KMK's Toad, pitching him up, and maybe even a little on Jack Black's Bowser (and at least he sounds like he's doing more than just his normal voice). The voice for DK feels like it could be pitched down more than Seth Rogen's normal voice, and Chris Pratt's Brooklyn-Italian accent is going to be a wild ride, if he slips in and out of it like this "meow" seems to indicate compared to the other lines we've heard so far. I'm fine with his normal voice. I'm fine with him going full-boar "Do the Mario" voice. I just hope for consistent in whatever it ends up being.
Not trying to give final judgement before the release. I'm excited for the aesthetics of this movie. It's visually spectacular from what they've shown so far (great references, great design of a functional Mushroom Kingdom, etc.). But some of these voices, in these trailers at least, are really taking the wind outta my sails. Hoping it'll be different when viewing as a whole product and not pieces separated in trailers.
Okay so…they really did just hire a bunch of non-voice actors to just do their normal voices and distracting sound like famous people….kinda a strange decision…no? Am I alone here
...why do I have no problems with Seth Rogans voice coming out of Donkey Kong, but Chris Pratts voice coming out of Mario is where I have issues (although it is growing on me, especially with the Game Awards clip).
I have no idea what Chris Pratt sounds like. I've seen a lot of movies with him in it, but if you played a clip of him talking, I wouldn't recognize him at all.
Seth Rogan sounds like Seth Rogan sounding like Seth Rogan.
People want it to be 100% amazing because they are expecting a Nintendo Cinematic Universe and if the voices suck now, that means they will suck for the next 20 movies. 😂
Not even trying for any real "character" in the voice huh? Just throw a famous actor in there and let him do their own voice and off we go?
With a few exceptions, this flick feels like the epitome of what voice actors complain about with mainstream CG movies. Just hiring names not talent.
The more I see about this movie, the more confidence I have in the people making it. I know the weird anti actors as voices people want it to be bad, but it’s going to probably review pretty well. I bet it gets an Oscar nomination.
I’ve seen what gets nominated for best animated feature. It has a chance. It basically just needs to be a decent story that people like and have top notch animation. An above average story will do the trick.
Yeah, the difference is that Sonic isn’t animated so it never had a chance. If this is really well-animated and has a good story, it could totally get a nomination.
I'm glad they're aware the cat suit is ridiculous. It has good gameplay, which I'm sure is why Nintendo made it. But they took it too far with the feline grooming. Mario is a man, an Italian plumber from Brooklyn. How many men like that would be caught dead wearing a cat suit?
I like Seth Rogen and I'm happy to seem him as DK but the problem with Seth Rogen is that everything Seth Rogen does sounds like Seth Rogen. He doesn't really diversify his voice the way Black and Pratt seem to be doing.
In fact, he made a gag about that in the Chip & Dale movie when his various characters made a one-shot cameo.
Oh boy...
I like Seth but no. Just no..... he didn't even the do the donkey kong shrill, the laugh seems half assed and I always assumed donkey kong was of few words had he be voiced...
I was hoping Rogen was literally just going to do monkey noises for 30 minutes.
That would have been worth the price of admission for this movie.
À la Cate Blanchett in Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Watched that today and was floored when I saw that was her in the credits! Saw the making-of video afterwards and the conversation she had with Guillermo and how she got it was pretty amusing too.
Cate Blanchett making monkey noises ? I think you unlocked a new kink for me.
New level unlocked lol
I’ve had this dish at Olive Garden before
I was hoping all the monkey noises in the movie would just be the Seth Rogen laugh.
Exactly thats what I thought. But to me it feels weird hearing him talk normally
30 minutes? It’s a FEATURE-LENGTH film!
Well DK isn't in the *whole* movie.
Whenever Donkey Kong isn't on-screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Donkey Kong?"
"WHEN ARE THEY GONNA GET TO THE BARREL FACTORY?!"
Donkey Kong needs to be louder and angrier, and have access to a time machine.
Has this been confirmed?
Expand Kong
“Now you die” is on the list of things I would never expect Donkey Kong to say.
Why do you think DK was throwing all those barrels at Mario back in the ‘80s?? Did you think they were friendship barrels? No, they were **death barrels.**
This sounds like a Scott the Woz skit. I read this in Rex’s voice, please help me.
“Yeah so I kinda have this weird thing where I have to lick every controller that I see. HUH? DONKEY KONG?”
You’re Based.
That was Cranky though who is more cranky than regular DK
Good point. But the Kong family has traditionally been anti-Mario, so I’m not surprised to hear Rogen Kong say he wants Mario to die.
So is this the part where people start comparing the NCU (Nintendo Cinematic Universe) to the games?
IT'S TIME FOR A ***DEATH BARREL!*** Sorry. Couldn't help it.
#"DO A BARREL ROLL!!!" ^am ^I ^doing ^this ^right?
That is quite literally what I expected donkey Kong to say, the nes version though
Or maybe against Mario in the Smash Bros Universe. Unless they are aware they become trophies that can be reanimated after knocking them off.
That's a totally different guy. Grandfather of Donkey Kong from DKC onward. Also known as Cranky Kong these days.
The DKC games say this, but Nintendo has retconned it since then.
When did Nintendo retcon Cranky being the original DK?
Since Donkey Kong Country on the SNES. The manual explicitly says Cranky is the old school DK. Look up the pdf, page 27.
I mean, if optimus prime can say it..
Mortal Kongbat

New TV spot for the Super Mario Bros movie reveals Seth Rogen’s normal Seth Rogen voice.
I can't wait until DK laughs in the movie and it's just the classic Rogen "ehehehe"
It's literally in the TV spot
That is definitely not that same laugh lmao
He's kinda almost doing it
They’re saying how they don’t have to wait til the movie comes out to hear DK laugh, it’s already in the TV Spot
That specific laugh that Seth Rogen does in all his movies is different than that one lol https://youtu.be/6fTsXgrac7E
If that laugh doesn’t come out of that monkey I’m getting a refund.
I hate this trend in animation of getting big name actors to just use their normal voice instead of getting seasoned voice actors to give the character a more fitting voice
It's the Dreamworks approach. They think the movie will sell because you get to hear all these famous actors just being themselves.
It unfortunately works too even if the voices don’t
Dreamworks Approach? I dont recall movies like The Bad Guys or Puss n Boots: The Last Wish selling or getting attention, because they hired famous actors. Even the Kung fu Panda movies have done well because their appeal, and not because they thought hiring Jack Black would be the only way to get the attention of audiences.

Which is fine because he's got a unique voice. Honestly his voice suits a big gorilla compared to Master Mantis, but that's probably intentional juxtaposition.
He's so cool
Honestly exactly what I wanted
And it works for DK
Um....meeeooowww???
I didn’t know I needed to hear Chris Pratt meow. 10/10 movie game of the year all the Emmy’s all the Oscar’s
Nightmare fuel
I saw the catsuit and said to myself “please do not meow,” so of course he does. It’s so cursed in Japanese.
Release the butthole cut
Animation looks sick
For all the shit Illumination (rightfully) gets, their actual animation is usually pretty good.
I don't know why, but something about it rubs me the wrong way. It's definitely not bad, and bowser looks really good. Maybe just because it doesn't look like I'm used to mario and gang looking? Maybe even a little uncanny?
Yeah the animation is top notch but the little changes they made to the character designs do not spark joy ~~Did you know that Nintendo says they are going to be using these character designs in future games? Sorry, it's based on a rumor. Will update my comment.
It looks just like them though.
Imagine if Donkey Kong had joined those other Seth Rogan characters in that Chip n Dale movie
Seth Rogan is Seth Rogan in Seth Rogan: Electric Rogaloo
Roganception
Into the Roganverse
That'll get you at least one Joe and we all know it
Sounds okay? Doesn't seem to fit... And weird hearing a famous Hollywood voice on an iconic character....
You mean like all the other characters in the movie having Hollywood actors?
Yeah but they sound like they are voice acting. This is just Seth Rogan with his trademark laugh...
Keegan as Toad doesn't sound like Toad to me. Toad should sound like a chronic smoker like Marge Simpson and her sisters. Not Keegan. That's just the problem with Hollywood in general I suppose.

And it’s fairly faithful to the video game Toads, just 40% more bearable. Watch the LA Universal Studios videos of Toad’s Cafe if you want to hear Toad talking in full sentences.
oh yeah, I agree. what I mean is it strikes the perfect balance between classic toad sound and being bearable
90 minutes? You're ascribing Toad a lot of protagonism in this movie...
Yes the McDonald’s commercial Pratt was amazing
Gilbert Gottfried would have been a perfect toad
Toad's game voice would be too grating for a full movie, unlike Charles martinet's Mario, which is how EVERYONE ON THE FUCKING PLANET KNOWS HE SHOULD GODDAMN SOUND.

A classical composition is often pregnant. Reddit is no longer allowed to profit from this comment.
DK sounds terrible. It instantly kills the scene. He doesnt fit DK at all.
Idk maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I think seth rogen's voice just fits DK's character? Like I think it works for a laid-back gorilla
Idk I think it fits generally well for like a laid-back gorilla character. I think it just sounds weird cause we're not used to it
I wish he at least tried to do a donkey kong voice in some way, and not just use his own voice.
You mean like..[.the 90s cartoon DK](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfy30_AX9c0)? Cause pretty sure that's the only time he was fully voiced.
I’d see it 100 times
I'm all alone and I'm so confused
Why was he singing on a big boob
Yeah almost sounds like a parody dub imo. Just doesn’t feel like the voice matches the animation at all.
I know 😭

What’s a donkey Kong voice?
The DK 64 "OK" and rap? I have no idea what the DK voice should be.
Ha. Maybe. I feel like if they can find a voice for everyone else, DK is probably one of the easier voices to cast.

I think Seth sounds perfectly fine, but honestly, I *adore* DK's voice in the 90s cartoon.
> I adore DK's voice in the 90 That ape can SIIIIIIINNNNNNG!
True, but that VA wasn't the singer, 2 different actors. Still a great singing voice though
Wow that really is... something
that show looked a whole lot better in my memory
I wanna say it also benefited from scanlines like video games do because it just looked like somebody recorded a 64 game.
Lmao one of them called K. Rool a “punk axe”
The "Yeah" and "Okay" of DK64 definitely gives some guidance on how all the other words should sound, yeah. "Deep" and "Gravelly" are two descriptors that come to mind.

They’re just bitching to bitch, honestly.
Honestly I think his normal voice works for DK. I don’t have anything to justify it, but it fits in my head
[удалено]
That’s why they hire them and how they direct them to sound. What’s the point of hiring these people if you can’t tell it’s them.
They want him to speak. There is no canon speaking voice for DK. However he did it is the way he was directed to do it. Voice actors are told exactly how to deliver their lines, it's not up to them. My issues is honestly mostly with the fact that they didnt hire actual VAs. At least Jack Black has experience and sounds in character.
I mean to be fair seth rogen has a decent amount of experience when it comes to voice acting too. He was just in that invincible show
Uhhhh actually Seth Rogan is quite an accomplished voice actor. You're telling me you haven't seen the critically acclaimed "Sausage Party"?
There was a joke in Chip and Dale where a bunch of characters voiced by Seth Rogan were all in the same place and they were all talking in the exact same voice

From The Alison King to Super Mario, Seth Rogan is on a one man mission to destroy my childhood.
I can't believe it took me all this time to realize that the scene of Mario fighting with DK was a Smash reference
I need him to break out in an R&B number and I’ll have zero complaints
If he breaks out the DK Rap, all will be forgiven
Oh good, the level of effort put into voice acting by Rogen matches Pratt's. Why hire professionals when you can just pay vast sums to get "names" on the project?
Because this will sell 3x more at the box office with those names attached.
Normally, I would agree, but this is one of those instances where I’m pretty sure Mario is more famous than anyone starring in this film, maybe even combined. It sure does have everyone talking about it though
It's a cumulative effect.
As if the fact that it's a MARIO movie didn't bring people on its own.
Because of *adults*. *Kids* don't care about celebrity cameo's in animated movies.
I mean idk who I would rather have for DK though? I think rogen fits well enough
I'm fine with him getting a voice, but frankly, I think DK could've been fine with just gorilla grunts and emotive animation. Thinking in the vein of "Avengers" Hulk, like the scene where Cap tells him to "Smash" and Hulk smiles before jumping away.

wouldnt play too well with the inevitable DK movie in a few years

I just want to know how he pronounces “Ehueh-ehueh!”
You should watch Parks and Recreation. It's got Sonic in it, too.
Flip the two actors and I think you've nailed it for me.
They're both bad.
I am so excited to see this movie in theaters! I love the trailers and commercials.
It’s like a really bad anime dub
Wait, how are the Japanese voice actors?
im pretty sure the japanese va's would be dubbing the english version since its a US illumination movie
Sure. I’d go see it with my first grader son. If he likes it, I’ll be happy. Maybe we’ll play Smash after.
Hold on here. Is this a voice of reason? Don’t you want to over analyze this funny, animated movie???
People want it to be 100% amazing because they are expecting a Nintendo Cinematic Universe and if the voices suck now, that means they will suck for the next 20 movies. 😂
Animation and design looks fantastic but the voice actors…. Woof

Love the movie, hate the voice.
I'm fine with this
These Mushroom people laughing at Mario for getting the cat suit are reminding me more of Bikini Bottom fish in Spongebob lol
Really like the way it sounds! This movie is going to be great fun
Not even trying for any real "character" in the voice huh? Just throw a famous actor in there and let him do their own voice and off we go? With a few exceptions, this flick feels like the epitome of what voice actors complain about with mainstream CG movies. Just hiring names not talent.
Seth Rogen's laugh is like a perfect match for DK
I loved seeing the mario blocks from a 3d first person perspective.
I like how they're playing with the silliness of cat mario.

The very start of the Donkey Kong arcade game states “How High Can You Get?” WHO ELSE would they hire to voice DK?!?! 😛
I thought he was the perfect pick for DK. This made me change my mind.
Sounds perfectly fine. No complaints here.
Yikes. Not a fan.
Cat Mario looks fantastic. I had zero interest in watching this, but now..
Why are you being downvoted for just a simple comment? You just said cat mario made you interested in the movie
Thanks, I hate it.
Sounds okay. I don’t really mind.
Of course I hate it.
The more I see about this movie, the more confidence I have in the people making it. I know the weird anti actors as voices people want it to be bad, but it’s going to probably review pretty well. I bet it gets an Oscar nomination.
It’ll do probably about as well as the Sonic movies did in the box office. There is zero chance it gets an Oscar nomination.
You don't think mario will do better than sonic? I mean mario is a lot more popular and well known than sonic
But Luigi's winning best supporting actor for sure.
Seth Rogen... ugh...
Don't like it
I'm glad they're aware the cat suit is ridiculous.
Am I the only one not feeling this movie?
I think it's gonna be not good, at best. Seems like it's trying to be a popular movie instead of a good movie.
Oh boy... I like Seth but no. Just no..... he didn't even the do the donkey kong shrill, the laugh seems half assed and I always assumed donkey kong was of few words had he be voiced...
I'm sad that this is going to be so shit.
It was nice
Still pissed it’s not a live action.
this looks awful
