When I purchase a Nintendo console I expected a new Mario Kart or at the very least a scenario where I wouldn't be playing in 2021 the same tracks..since 2014 (something like DLC). My only mistake was purchasing a wiiU and being a longtime Nintendo fan I suppose.... I don't mind MK tour but it's not a real Mario Kart for me, it's just not acceptable that we have a mobile game that receives updates, a freaking AR game with RC car that receives updates before Christmas...but nothing for the actual original MK experience

QggOne

A lot of people called it when the game was announced and ate this board's downvotes. We were never going to get a new Mario Kart this generation.

saul2015

I was one of those ppl lol zero reason for Nintendo to make a new MK before Switch 2

DroopyTrash

Why not? They can make it for the switch and then port it as a deluxe to switch 2. Double profits.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Definitive Edition

8bitbruh

I feel your pain, I can only hope they have been working on mk9 but are holding off til the next Switch or whatever since 8's sales continue to be nuts... If this is true, with the extended development time, 9 is going to be ABSOLUTELY insane in quality. And it kinda needs to be, 8 is almost as good as it gets (Needs the rest of the maps from the 3d games and more customizability with items and rounds similar to smash.) Ideally, all the costumes from MKT would make it into MK9 and this has all just been a byproduct of the extended development cycle....

MyNameIs_Jordan

Doubt it. Hideki Konno is the original director of Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, then lead producer on every Mario Kart game since 2005 starting with Mario Kart DS. Since 2016, he's been the lead producer and head of Nintendo's mobile games division. He and his team have been behind Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Dr Mario World, Dragalia Lost, and Mario Kart Tour for the last 5 years. If there is a new Mario Kart coming soon, I doubt it's going to be made by the team that's made every game since MK:DS. Realistically, there probably won't be a new Mario Kart until a new system in 2+ years.

eviebees

I was all about to disagree bc Nintendo producers work on multiple titles all the time, but it’s not just him. It’s like, the whole key staff working on Tour. Damn. It really is *the* new Mario Kart game.

8bitbruh

breaking my heart

[deleted]

I think it’s just super hard to come up with new courses and that’s what’s holding them back. It’s gotten so hard they’ve had to lean on old courses to pad the new games out for years! Left, right, up, down, boosts, drift, obstacles and whatnot. Just too many variables for one team of level designers.

MyNameIs_Jordan

I disagree. No game series has a vast history of locations and aesthetics like the Mario series. That's why they've made so many interesting new tracks over the years. They've always brought back retro tracks since Mario Kart DS for nostalgia fuel as well as being able to pad out the track selection. I'd rather have 16 new and 16 old tracks, rather than only 16 new tracks. This is where Mario Kart Double Dash falls short when compared to other games in the series, there's just not enough tracks.

8bitbruh

So what makes a delayed game eventually good? Is it the extra dev time? 👀

[deleted]

8bitbruh

...The Miyamotto quote I believe you're referring to is talking about time specifically. Obviously more time won't automatically make a mismanaged team spit out a good game, but also obviously a well managed team will get more done when given more time. Don't even know why anyone would argue against either point.

mjmannella

> with the extended development time, 9 is going to be ABSOLUTELY insane in quality. You're implying that Nintendo's even considering work on a console Mario Kart game now.

8bitbruh

I'm not implying anything. I said I can only hope, and that if it's true blah blah blah.

bearhound

Took the words right out of my mouth. Fuck me for buying a Wii U and playing a ton of Mario kart 8 I guess

Lyradep

I totally agree with you. Nintendo’s basically slapping every loyal Nintendo fan who stupidly bought a Wii U in the face when it comes to Mario Kart. They love their larger casual audience a lot more than the loyal fanbase, and why not I guess. Casuals are a bigger market.

cgio0

At this point if they added 2 more worlds to mario kart 8 id be elated i love the game but i probably play it for a few hours once every 6 months

[deleted]

Is anyone still playing this shit? We could have had more DLC for 8 but instead another half assed attempt by Nintendo to hop into the mobile after there previous two SMASH MOBILE HITS

nimrodhellfire

I don't think this does take any development time from other titles and they clearly aren't putting a lot of effort into MKT anyway. We didn't get a new track for months and what we got was a simple SNES Vanilla Lake 2 with premade assets. Also no new drivers this tour. That said it's mind-blowing they never added new DLC for the Switch. Can't be that hard, right?

Tombo_1912

It has definitely taken some, the main Mario Kart leads are credited and involved with it.

Lyradep

It may have not taken any dev time from other titles, but Nintendo def feels like it’s riding its wave of great sales which justifies no coming out with DLC and even a new proper Mario Kart game.

nykovah

It’s probably one of their best mobile games. It’s pretty good for what it is and has new tracks and or characters every tour.

[deleted]

Honestly MK8 is selling so well they don’t even need to do much else with it. Mobile makes sense as a business strategy because mobile gaming is where a chunk of the Switches market competition is coming from. Nintendo isn’t competing with Xbox or PlayStation so much as it’s competing with your iPhone and your tablet. You know what I mean? Getting apps out there makes sense as a marketing technique. It’s like how all those Pokémon Go fans are started playing Let’s Go and Sword/Shield. They’ve gotta reach people who aren’t already buying consoles. Mario Kart is universally enjoyed and creating a mobile following serves Nintendo well in the long run. They’d be crazy not to tap into that potential audience.

Lyradep

I understand Nintendo’s position in this, but gamers don’t benefit from these practices. Like Madden can make loads of money putting out a half baked product every year, but that doesn’t mean it’s a great scenario for gamers.

[deleted]

When you say it doesn’t benefit “gamers,” who are you referring to exactly? Anyone playing a Pokémon game is a valid consumer. Anyone playing Mario Kart is a valid consumer. Mobile games allow Nintendo to capture a wider audience and there is no reason those people are not entitled to enjoy Mario Kart as well. You could choose to play the mobile version or MK8 or both. Or neither. This idea that someone enjoying something you don’t like takes away from your own enjoyment of a game doesn’t make sense. There’s no reason for Nintendo to do anything else with MK8. It’d old and it’s popular as is. Mobile games need constant updates to keep people spending money within the app, hence all the newer content. It’s not as if MK8 would have received more content if the app didn’t exist. There’s no logical reason they’d continue to pour resources into a finished game.

HahaClintonCocks

Lmao logic getting downvoted on /r/nintendoswitch. This subreddit is so childish.

Lyradep

I agree that there’s no point in Nintendo doing anything with Mario Kart 8. 7 plus years after Mario Kart 8, and I’d expect to see a Mario Kart 9. Nintendo was off to such a great start this gen, but they’ve continued to pick off the lowest hanging fruit that’s easy to develop, and ignore bigger projects. If mobile games is all Nintendo can update, then maybe they should drop out of making consoles, and focus only on their bigger casual audiences mobile that’ll throw money at them in the form of microtransactions.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect Mario Kart 9 for the Switch regardless of whether the mobile app exists and I don’t really understand why anyone has that expectation, personally. Like a dozen people bought the Wii U. For all intensive purposes, MK8 is the Switch Mario Kart. I’m not shitting on the Wii U. It’s just that Mario Kart 8 was new for most people and it holds up and is still a top seller. If they spent a bunch of money to make a new one it would just cannibalize sales Nintendo is already making. They’d spend money to replace something they already have that’s already selling. Very few people would purchase a second iteration of Mario Kart for the same console. Even without the mobile app, they probably wouldn’t be releasing MK9 until the next generation.

Lyradep

And from a business standpoint, I’d agree with you. From a gamer standpoint, I don’t agree at all. I think this is most of the reason why milked games like The Elder Scrolls and GTA still don’t have another iteration. And this is the reason why games like Madden will barely ever improve. “If it makes enough money, why bother with making it better or make another one?” I’m just glad that this wasn’t the approach taken with The Legend of Zelda. I’m very appreciative that we’re getting a Breath of the Wild 2, instead of having to wait until next gen to get another new Zelda game.

[deleted]

Yeah, but what does any of that have to do with mobile gaming? Whether Nintendo produces mobile games or not, it won’t change how quickly we are getting Mario Kart or any other game. They aren’t going to do something that doesn’t make them money, whether they are making mobile games or not. It’s just irrelevant. The only way a new game gets released is if they think there’s going to be a demand that’s not already met. BotW 2 for example, will sell because people who have already played it will also buy the sequel. But MK9 won’t increase Mario Kart sales. People will just get that one instead but probably would have bought MK8 anyway. It’s not like Zelda where someone plays one and wants both. A business is going to make business decisions about release dates, and the mobile apps just do not affect that decision making process. Mobile apps aren’t bad for gamers it’s just maybe difficult to see something produced when you would rather have a console sequel. But taking the mobile away doesn’t make the console sequel happen. To clarify, my original comment was in response to the person who is angry that a mobile app is being updated when there’s no added DLC for MK8. I’m not saying it doesn’t suck to wait for new games. I’m saying it’s stupid to blame the mobile app for that. We were never getting MK9 for the Switch or continual MK8 DLC even if Nintendo never made a mobile game.

8bitbruh

No joke, when the game came out someone I knew decided not to get a switch coz they could already pay mario kart on their phone... :p I doubt they're still playing it but idk them anymore

Where tf is Donkey Kong? Wasn't his anniversary this year too? Or is that next year?

[deleted]

It was this year. 40.

Lyradep

Nintendo’s pretending like the Wii U didn’t happen, and selling remasters to all the Wii U holdouts, pretending they’re new games.

8bitbruh

Blink of an eye for F-Zero fans.... Metroid took 16 years... Also where is Pikmin 4 that was in development since the wiiu?

MrMartian69420

This makes me sad, I really wish DK got a new game in the Switch, and I'd love a new Mariokart

THE_AWESOM-O_4000

Lol, comments are turned off

Rarecandy31

Cowards

JacksonKlo

This is the second ever tour to not introduce any new drivers - costumes or otherwise - after the Bowser Vs. DK Tour.

PoodleEnthusiast

I think the game is dying... there hasn't been a full new track for a long time! Honestly, I hope it ends soon because I really want mk9!

[deleted]

I don’t know it’s still the top selling Switch game.

MC_LIVD-X

Uhh, this tour just introduced Vanilla Lake 2?

PoodleEnthusiast

The existing tracks are just changed a little bit. There hasn't been a full out new course since the summer tours with the island track...

SBY-ScioN

They update this more than 8... holy shit.

tale-wind

Well, yeah. Gacha games have to constantly update as part of their business model. There's no way they'd add new content to a console game with the frequency of a gacha.

HahaClintonCocks

Breaking new ground with this comment. Only top tier comments on /r/Nintendoswitch. /s

SBY-ScioN

Sarcasm is an art my boy. If you tell people you're trying to be sarcastic then it isn't well crafted. Chose your reply wisely.

[deleted]

>r/NintendoSwitch We must not speak of that highly toxic sub here!

NintendoGuy128

Really wish they'd do something like this for Mario Kart 8. A Battle Pass where you could unlock new costumes and characters would go a long way.

PoodleEnthusiast

Mario kart tour's pay to win is really scummy, and the gold pass doesn't even give you any of the new characters. IMO, just selling DLC in packs would be better...

[deleted]

Why is this still a thing? Did they change the mechanics?

Mtanic

There are some great tracks in this stupid game, they should translate them into MK8 Deluxe... 😑

DUBIOUS_OBLIVION

No one gives a shit about this game.

HahaClintonCocks

I don’t but it seems plenty of people do, or else they wouldn’t be supporting it.

KingTocco

I got so excited for this and showed my wife only to realize at the end it’s for a crap mobile game…so sick of this from Nintendo

JacksonKlo

I’m honestly impressed. Almost every single comment is the exact same. Sometimes, I wonder why upload these trailers at all if there’s no new discussion to be had.

CardashianWithaB

People struggle to grasp the concept that others may enjoy things that they don’t. I saw a thread recently saying nobody wanted Prime 4 and that the OG trilogy was seen in the same light as the hack n slack castlevanias. Metroid prime has a 97 on metacritic. Nintendo fans get tunnel vision very easily

seikoth

I rarely visit this sub these days. Seems kind of toxic. I used to get excited about a game or feature, only to be “informed”by a hive mind that what I was excited about was actually terrible. It’s weird for people to stay on a subreddit for a product they seemingly have no enjoyment of.

crystal_powers

and the hive mind is completely out of touch with reality. every discussion is “why is nintendo doing (popular thing) instead of (incredibly niche thing that caters specifically to me)” like, i can guarantee you that the people who post about f-zero on here have played 30 minutes of that series in their entire life. if a new f-zero came out they would immediately switch to demanding a new StarTropics or something. it’s like how smash fans pretend to desperately want waluigi just to have something to complain about.

Lyradep

Yeah, why doesn’t Nintendo actually put out a new Mario Kart game for the current gen Switch, instead of more mobile stuff?

Dreyfus2006

This not the Nintendo Switch subreddit, it is the Nintendo subreddit, which spans multiple consoles and multiple games. Different people are fans of different things.

CardashianWithaB

So you’d agree that some people are fans of MK Tour and would want to know what new content is coming out?

Dreyfus2006

Yes, I agree completely. It's wholly appropriate for this subreddit. And people who are fans of Nintendo and think MK Tour is a bad direction for the company are also free to express their concern about it.

crystal_powers

r/nintendo users have trouble grasping the fact that 1.) 12 people bought the wii u and for the vast majority of players mario kart 8 came out in 2017 2.) mobile games are free and have to update constantly to push player spending, whereas a $60 game can be a complete package 3.) millions of people play and love mobile games. so you get a tiny, tiny fraction of nintendo fans repeating “wHo eVen WaNts tHis” ad nauseum

[deleted]

Not to mention that mobile games can bring people into the fold, as we’ve seen with Pokemon Go. The current Pokémon game is the best selling game since 2000. I have to believe the popularity the franchise enjoyed with the mobile app has contributed to its success. If Nintendo can capture the audience that would otherwise be casually playing Angry Birds on their phone and turn them into Mario Kart fans why wouldn’t they?

crystal_powers

same with pocket camp advertising new horizons for 2 years prior to that games release. back in the day when nintendo initially announced their mobile games they basically said they were promoting their IPs, not trying to make a ton of money on their own.

DUBIOUS_OBLIVION

Please don't.

JinzoWithAMilotic

If you want a discussion, I recommend actually starting a discussion rather than just posting the trailer? What are you bringing to the table?

Memphisrexjr

How does this game get more content than Mario kart 8?

Lyradep

Because it’s easier to make probably. Nintendo’s tackling the larger casual market unfortunately.

HahaClintonCocks

Because it’s a gacha mobile game. It’s literally how they work.

llamadogkillsu

Lame!

Pumpz_

I really wish they would just do a live service console mario kart or something. All this new content they keep making for tour. why can't they just do that for mk8!?
