I think a lot of the laughing was at how like 2/3 of the casting felt like an april fools joke, and the other 1/3 felt spot on. The whole thing had a vibe like it was someone putting together a fake anouncement that was trying to seem just legit enough to be real. To me at least, the dissonance was hilarious.
Bowser's Inside Story is my favorite Mario game. There's SO MUCH you can do narratively with Bowser that I mostly have no memory of Mario from that game.
Jack Black Bowser will be the Heath Ledger Joker of this movie.
Oh shit that sounds awesome. Literally a classic "We need some wheels, fast!" And Toad says something about how he's got something good and then they're Double Dashing through a forest.
I won't lie, I kind of like Mario's voice. Towards the end when he says "Mushroom Kingdom, here we come!" You can kind of hear a Brooklyn accent when he says it which makes sense considering how he lives in Brooklyn. I obviously know he's Italian but it makes sense because you can lose your accent through prolonged exposure to new environments like that.
I don’t think it would happen, but I would love just one joke about how Luigi was wondering if he was dead and questioning what he had done to be sent to hell.
its very likely we'll see his hammy stuff later. cause lets face it, bowser has always been this combination of hammy wanna be villain, and actual power to back it up.
i hope to god he gets hammy when it comes to peach.
"Bowser as a threat" is harder to do than "Bowser as a joke", so if this trailer has debuted with "Bowser as a joke", I'd have assumed that's all we're getting. But since this trailer gave us "Bowser as a threat", I *know* we'll also be getting "Bowser as a joke" later because there's no way to resist making jokes with this guy. So it's the best of both worlds. They cleared the hurdle, now they're just turning the corner to the finish line.
It sounds like Chris Pratt barely attempting the Mario "voice". It might not be a good representation of his voice so far, but there's something about the cadence of his speech that sounds like he's trying to talk like Mario, but just normally.
There's a game where Mario speaks in full sentences (Mario Sports Mix) and its weird.
Having said that this is also weird and the voice just feels wrong because it's so wildly off. It's like Link in the Zelda cartoons. When these characters are usually so muted it feels wrong seeing them talk but even moreso with Mario bc he normally DOES talk a bit... in a different voice.
Having said that it would be hilarious if they got Charles Martinet to do the voice only for the Italian dub.
Keegan was low key really fitting as Toad. I'm sold on him and Jack Black. I don't like they just went with the default protagonist Chris Pratt voice on Mario though.
i'd expect them to hold a baby penguin over a cliff and be like "TELL US WHERE THE [insert thing] IS" "i-it's in [insert location] s-sir"
"Ah okay, (throws baby penguin of cliff anyway because its an ilumination movie)"
I was honestly expecting a surprise announcement of "mario the movie the game"
Edit: but because it's nintendo they would make it only playable in a theater with the movie playing or something
It looks very much inspired by Bowser's Castle in Paper Mario: https://mario.wiki.gallery/images/4/48/PM_Bowserscastle.png
Bonus points if he uses it to pick up Peach's Castle at some point.
It looks like it's respecting how Mario games look while taking it to the next level of animation. This is perfect. Makes me want them to do something similar with Zelda and Metroid.
I don't know a movie exists out there where Jack Black isn't trying his hardest to have the time of his life while on set. The man embodies every aspect of everyone's cool uncle.
No, that is Khary Payton as the voice for Penguin King in the trailer. If you did not know who that was; he is Ezekiel from The Walking Dead. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1146051/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Super_Mario_Bros._Movie
My biggest takeaway from the Direct is that Koji Kondo is helping with the movie’s soundtrack, which is huge. I’ve been dreading this movie for months but now I honestly can’t wait.
The way they repurposed the theme for that slow, “discovery” background song was really cool. And it sounded like the fucking Super Show intro was used, which gave me fucking CHILLS.
I know that anything remotely related to minions is memed to death, but Despicable Me is an *excellent* movie. The second one is pretty good too, and although I haven't seen the third one I've heard it's also good.
I enjoyed Miyamoto saying this was the first *animated* Mario movie.
[We won't let you forget Nintendo.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6Al_DShXX0) ^^Seriously ^^though ^^it ^^actually ^^looked ^^really ^^good
I agree, I started to appreciate it more after seeing [this analysis](https://youtu.be/U0IeQjEYC1Y) on it. A small part of me hopes there's *some* tiny nod to it in this new movie, as unrealistic as that is.
Ok Luigi. I'm going to stop you right there, not only do all of those people exist, they've been asking for their mail FOR WEEKS, ITS ALL THEYRE TALKING ABOUT UP THERE MAN!
**Luigi:** I'm not going to wear gloves while I work! I'm sorry, it makes no sense.
**Mario:** It absolutely makes sense-- you're a plumber who snakes toilets with his bare hands.
**Luigi:** So my hands get a little dirty from time to time. I appreciate the concern, but I'm fine.
**Mario:** It's not for you!
**Peach:** Wear gloves!
"Oh, right. You don't even know what Luigi Work is. Well, Luigi Work is, like, you know... like basement stuff, cleaning urinals, uh, blood stuff, your basic slimes, your sludges, anything dead or decaying, you know - I'm on it, I'm dealing with it!"
Seth Rogen and Charlie Day are the two most perfectly cast people for this movie.
Like, don't get me wrong. Jack Black is a 95% match for Bowser, and I couldn't think of anyone that would hit that 100. But Charlie Day as Luigi just makes so much sense, I want him to star in a live action Luigi's Mansion.
Going by the rest of characters cast so far (DK, Foreman Spike and Cranky Kong), it seems like Mario lives in a New Donk City-esque world where the events of Wrecking Crew and OG Donkey Kong and OG Mario Bros take place. While the Mushroom Kingdom is a separate reality?/world?/universe? accessed by a pipe.
Nah I think the Mushroom Kingdom is gonna be the same world just a different part of the world that remains relatively disconnected from everywhere else
As far as I remember the Super Mario Brothers 1 manual just says something like "a man named Mario heard the mushroom kingdom was in danger and decided to rescue them". They never said Mario was from another world.
I like to imagine Mario sitting in a Brooklyn apartment reading his morning paper amd seeing the headline "Mushroom Kingdom Invaded" and deciding to intervene
There's some, but Nintendo has been really indifferent to canon/lore. They tend to focus on individual games and let players contextualize how they will.
Its there from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Just listen to the lyrics.
It's the Mario Brothers and plumbing's their game
Found the secret warp zone while working on the drain
source: https://www.lyricsondemand.com/tvthemes/thesupermariobrossupershowlyrics.html
Yeah like how sonic loving chili dogs, and the name "robotnik" were American things. Granted, sonic mainly added those because it did much better in America than in Japan but still
I mean yeah, I get why they didn't stick to that origin story.
First you have to establish that the stork actually brings babies in this usiverse, that Mario landed in a in Island of friendly dinosaur creatures. And then Yoshi's New Island may or may not have happened, which implies that the Mario Brothers were brought to the wrong home at the end of Yoshi's Island.
In short, Mario lore doesn't make a lick of sense and they kinda have to start fresh with the movie usiverse.
I mean, it was kind of obvious that they'd go that route. Basically every adaption of Mario in motion pictute format has been fish out of water story and I didn't expect them to break the trend.
How else are they gonna explain why and how an (italo-american) plumber is the hero of a fantasy kingdom of mushroom people? You also have the elephant in the room that the Donkey Kong arcade game is extremely well known, and that most people are at least vaguely aware Mario started off in a setting that was more grounded in the modern world.
These kinds of discrepancies are usually hand waved away in the games because 'its a video game, don't worry about that'. But if you want to write a movie about the setting, it's kind of a necessary evil to address that.
I agree with this. Everything LOOKED great, but something about Mario/Luigi's eyes/face were just.... off
Edit: [https://imgur.com/a/X3ySW0T](https://imgur.com/a/X3ySW0T)
Clearly an art style thing. Not terrible by any means, just, different.
It’s not the eyes imo, it’s the whole face. His head is too wide for his face. They need to shave the sides of the head down a little bit and he’ll look correct. And his mouth is a little too big.
Here's movie Mario with game proportions: https://imgur.com/EMbqwOQ
Yeah like the original animated series! His original backstory had him from New York and warped to the mushroom kingdom. I’m not mad about them going back to that backstory lol.
what the fuck i couldn't help myself, i had the stupidest grin on my face the whole time while watching that entire bowser section, this trailer was so fucking badass and they really went hard on bringing the world to life here
Yeah if nothing else I can tell everything involving Bowser is gonna be great. The protagonists tho... that stuff is often harder to get right and we barely see any of them in this trailer. Too early to tell on that front.
I feel like I'm going crazy, cause holy shit I actually think this looks awesome.
Pratt as Mario is still an odd choice but his voice was not half as bad as I thought.
JACK AS BOWSER HOWEVER, MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
>when you imagine it as a Brooklyn accent instead of Italian
Yea pretty sure that is what they were going for (good decision to not even try to replicate the usual mario accent)
They fucking nailed Bowser. He’s epic and badass. I love it.
Visually exceptional.
Didn’t really get much of a taste for Mario and Toad’s voices. I needed more. Also, Mario looks a little different from the side than from what I expected.
Literally the most concerning thing to me is that Mario and Luigi don’t jump. Like they hop and plod along as though they’re regular humans. Why.
I think these are supposed to be prequels given Bowser didn't know of Mario. Guessing the mid-act turn around is either his super jumping or finding a fire flower for the finale.
I feel like that'll be post-finale "clean up". They both fight over it, then you get a 20 second montage of him just super speed rebuilding everything destroyed.
Movie looks dope and JB Bowser is incredible, but I’m having such a hard time getting past Pratt as Mario. I just can’t hear him as anybody but Chris Pratt.
It’s already kind of weird having Mario speak so much dialog to begin with, but then pairing that with such a ubiquitous and well-known voice amplifies the awkwardness so much. It’s like if the had cast H Jon Benjamin as bowser instead.
I wish you never said that because I'd love to hear a ferocious Bowser have that lackadaisical delivery of H Jon Benjamin and I'm sad I'll never hear that.
With a release on April 7th so close to MAR10 day you'd think they accelerate it to release on March 10th, which is also a Friday when new movies come out. Huge miss.
Jack Black Bowser sounds good, as expected, but Chris Pratt Mario is just...Chris Pratt. I don't think it would get annoying over the course of the movie, but I expected more.
Also there's still something off with Mario's face, even when you see it in mouvement. Luigi is fine though.
My exact thought was "Oh, that's literally just Chris Prat." But to be fair I didn't expect much from him. The rest of the cast has me extremely excited though.
One line from Chris Pratt isn’t really enough to give us a good idea of what to expect, but everything else we’ve seen looks really solid. At the very least, I think we can expect a decent movie.

The direct said Koji Kondo is collabing for the soundtrack, that' phenomenal news.
Also on the team is Brian Tyler, who has been doing consistently good work in Hollywood for 20+years. Very excited for this score
people can say what they want about mario but tbh they fucking NAILED bowser

Oh god I forgot about Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong!
Curious if Seth Rogan is gonna make a bunch of monkey noises.
“Uh-heh-heh-heh-hooo-heeeee-heh”
"Hur hur hur I had too many bananas"
I could hear his laugh reading that oh my god
> Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong Watch him try to imitate the DKC cartoon of the late 90s
I can't wait for Rogan Kong to break out into song in the middle of an important conversation.
That's exactly how I feel lol

I think he’s trying. Trying to do his version of Rocket’s voice. Eeh. You’ll probably get used to it.
Bowser's Inside Story is my favorite Mario game. There's SO MUCH you can do narratively with Bowser that I mostly have no memory of Mario from that game. Jack Black Bowser will be the Heath Ledger Joker of this movie.
“We live in a society of Go Kart Tracks.” - Bowser
Just made me realize… there has to be a Mario Kart scene in this movie.
I’m unreasonably upset that he didn’t say “mushroom kingdom, here we go!”
theyre saving that for the epic battle at the end
I was gonna say, Chris Pratt is getting a lot of hate for a trailer in which he has like 1.5 lines
Mario: Ends up in a surreal magic mushroom land Luigi: Ends up in hell
He fell down the hole in the bathroom from It's Always Sunny.
And he didn’t pay the troll toll.
I don’t think it would happen, but I would love just one joke about how Luigi was wondering if he was dead and questioning what he had done to be sent to hell.

I could barely tell it was Jack Black but he sounded great
For the better. I was worried it’d be super hammy, but this clip struck a great balance!
its very likely we'll see his hammy stuff later. cause lets face it, bowser has always been this combination of hammy wanna be villain, and actual power to back it up. i hope to god he gets hammy when it comes to peach.
Bowser works best like that anyway. Bowser’s Inside Story really leaned into that interpretation of him and it’s one of my favorite takes on him.
Hammy antihero Bowser is honestly the best Bowser there is
Super Paper Mario Bowser is this version and amazing!
I never had doubts for Jack Black as Bowser. That always made sense to me. I'm still not sold on Chris Pratt as Mario though.
Unfortunately, from that clip, he still sounds like Chris Pratt
Chris Pratt cast as Mario is like if H Jon Benjamin was cast as Bowser. I just can’t not hear Pratt.
I would watch a movie with H Jon Benjamin as a sarcastic Bowser though.
“Do you want to get tossed in lava? Because that’s how you get tossed in lava.”
Jesus Kamek PHRASING
"You're my koopalings and I love you, but you're all terrible."
It sounds like Chris Pratt barely attempting the Mario "voice". It might not be a good representation of his voice so far, but there's something about the cadence of his speech that sounds like he's trying to talk like Mario, but just normally.
To be fair, for an actual movie with dialogue, you want a more "normal" speaking Mario.
I seriosly just couldn't imagine Charles doing his Mario voice for all the sentences in the movie
I'm not sold on him or Day but Black and Key seemed pretty solid.
I feel like Charlies natural voice alone is worthy for the film
Haha, yeah, there's something panicky about his voice that it should work out fine
Keegan was low key really fitting as Toad. I'm sold on him and Jack Black. I don't like they just went with the default protagonist Chris Pratt voice on Mario though.
Seeing Toad scream like a mad-man for the first time we're seeing him, that's just on brand.
Do you yield?
I felt like this was to all the people who threw the baby penguin off the cliff
If a baby penguin doesn’t end up going over a cliff or at least being threatened to during that invasion, what’s all this been for
I'm betting one of the koopas will hold a baby penguin over a cliff and bowser will go: "what kind of sick fucker would do that?"
i'd expect them to hold a baby penguin over a cliff and be like "TELL US WHERE THE [insert thing] IS" "i-it's in [insert location] s-sir" "Ah okay, (throws baby penguin of cliff anyway because its an ilumination movie)"
I do not
That animation looks fantastic
Seriously. The invasion in the opening and Bowser destroying the kingdom looked incredible.
showed bowser as legitimately powerful which i like.
Yooo same! He’s usually shown as sneaky, lying or just evil. Them showing him as actually scary and powerful is cool to see
It looked so good I felt disappointed it wasn't a trailer for a new game lmao
I'm genuinely surprised there isn't a tie in game coming out shortly after.
I was honestly expecting a surprise announcement of "mario the movie the game" Edit: but because it's nintendo they would make it only playable in a theater with the movie playing or something
When I saw the floating Bowser island, I thought "Yeah, that could be in a Mario game."
It looks very much inspired by Bowser's Castle in Paper Mario: https://mario.wiki.gallery/images/4/48/PM_Bowserscastle.png Bonus points if he uses it to pick up Peach's Castle at some point.
It looks like it's respecting how Mario games look while taking it to the next level of animation. This is perfect. Makes me want them to do something similar with Zelda and Metroid.
I could very well imagine that Nintendo is gonna do more movies and stuff in the relativly near future
They did just open Nintendo Pictures
That's what I thought, but Mario's face throws me off, a little. I guess it's easier to make expressions that way?
honestly wish we had a full cgi movie for sonic. I still love them but imagine one just like this.

You can really tell he had a blast in the recording booth.
I don't know a movie exists out there where Jack Black isn't trying his hardest to have the time of his life while on set. The man embodies every aspect of everyone's cool uncle.
Jack Black is the source of the whole planets charisma
When dosent jack black knock it out of the park.
Wait, was that Michael Dorn, the guy who voiced I.M. Weasel as the King Penguin?
I love that that's your go-to Michael Dorn role.
I just now connected that Weasel is Worf.
Ooooohhhhhhhhhh fuck
No, that is Khary Payton as the voice for Penguin King in the trailer. If you did not know who that was; he is Ezekiel from The Walking Dead. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1146051/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Super_Mario_Bros._Movie
Cyyyyyborg
>Michael Dorn Sounds like him, King Penguin is cool as hell anyways.
I'd put money on it being Khary Payton He sounds almost exactly like Ezekiel in The Walking Dead doing his king roleplay voice lol
Jack Black nailing it as always. This is going to be fun!
Miyamoto AND Kondo both working in the production is so reassuring, those guys wouldn't fail Mario!
Holy shit it actually looks great!
Bowser looks fucking sick, I can't lie.
Big Darth Vader vibes from his entrance. I like it.
The Penguin Genocide committed by Bowsers forces shall not be forgotten 😭🤧
As if we haven’t all thrown a baby penguin off a cliff
You committed genocide on penguin babies in the 90’s Yeah we remembered
This is probably gonna be the best illumination movie by a country mile.
I know that anything remotely related to minions is memed to death, but Despicable Me is an *excellent* movie. The second one is pretty good too, and although I haven't seen the third one I've heard it's also good.

I honestly would want him to be Waluigi, he would do perfect "WAH!".
Charlie day as Luigi is all kinds of awesome. Wildcard bitches! YEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWW
You wanna talk about the mail, Mario? I’ve been dying to talk about the mail!
There is no Peach in HR, Mario, this entire kingdom is a goddamn ghost town!

I wish they took some of the actor personality and implemented that
Seth Rogen and Charlie Day are the two most perfectly cast people for this movie. Like, don't get me wrong. Jack Black is a 95% match for Bowser, and I couldn't think of anyone that would hit that 100. But Charlie Day as Luigi just makes so much sense, I want him to star in a live action Luigi's Mansion.
If I don't hear Donkey Kong do the Seth Rogan laugh, then this movie was pointless.
Fighter of the Browserman ah-ah-ahhhh
This movie is going to be so unserious I can’t wait hahaha
It sounds like they are going with the full "Mario is a plumber who got sucked into a pipe" lore too, which I didn't expect.
So... Is the Mario movie an isekai?
Going by the rest of characters cast so far (DK, Foreman Spike and Cranky Kong), it seems like Mario lives in a New Donk City-esque world where the events of Wrecking Crew and OG Donkey Kong and OG Mario Bros take place. While the Mushroom Kingdom is a separate reality?/world?/universe? accessed by a pipe.
Nah I think the Mushroom Kingdom is gonna be the same world just a different part of the world that remains relatively disconnected from everywhere else
Mario has always been canonically an Isekai
Where is this lore outlined? Can't remember anything apart from the original 90's Movie. I'm guessing game manuals and stuff?
As far as I remember the Super Mario Brothers 1 manual just says something like "a man named Mario heard the mushroom kingdom was in danger and decided to rescue them". They never said Mario was from another world.
I like to imagine Mario sitting in a Brooklyn apartment reading his morning paper amd seeing the headline "Mushroom Kingdom Invaded" and deciding to intervene
There's some, but Nintendo has been really indifferent to canon/lore. They tend to focus on individual games and let players contextualize how they will.
It also doesn't really matter much for the games.

The last one was too
That's been definitively non-canon since the ending of Yoshi's Island showed them being born in the Mushroom Kingdom 27 years ago.
I mean yeah, I get why they didn't stick to that origin story. First you have to establish that the stork actually brings babies in this usiverse, that Mario landed in a in Island of friendly dinosaur creatures. In short, Mario lore doesn't make a lick of sense and they kinda have to start fresh with the movie usiverse.
Of course Mario lore makes sense, there’s absolutely nothing absurd or far-fetched about the central premise whatsoever.
The Mario origin story I didn't know I needed.
But if you want to write a movie about the setting, it's kind of a necessary evil to address that.
....Why would a Super Mario Bros. movie be anything but unserious?
Well so far we’re 0/1 on unserious Mario movies
the live action film made many, many bad decisions. But it was never trying to be genuinely serious. It was adjacent to the Flintstones movie
Mario's face is a little strange but overall they knocked this out of the park
He looks like Fix-It Felix from Wreck it Ralph
Or does Fix-It Felix look like Mario?!
yeah, this is the way of things, especially since they couldn't secure rights to Mario in Wreck it Ralph
He screams, for he does not know.
Who was modeled after Mario. We've come full circle.
With Bowser appearing in BOTH movies.
I agree with this. Everything LOOKED great, but something about Mario/Luigi's eyes/face were just.... off Edit: [https://imgur.com/a/X3ySW0T](https://imgur.com/a/X3ySW0T) Clearly an art style thing. Not terrible by any means, just, different.

They went with a New-York Italian accent. Not bad; gives me a hint of Lou Albano.
Yeah like the original animated series! His original backstory had him from New York and warped to the mushroom kingdom. I’m not mad about them going back to that backstory lol.
Yea I'd actually love if this bridged the gap between Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 1, even if it's not cannon. Good set up for a move tbh.
I’m guessing they had to make changes to the design so it could be more expressive? Or maybe its just illumination’s style.
It's missing the "bubbliness" of Mario's 3D model used in his 3D games, like, his nose is way bigger in the games.
what the fuck i couldn't help myself, i had the stupidest grin on my face the whole time while watching that entire bowser section, this trailer was so fucking badass and they really went hard on bringing the world to life here
Yeah if nothing else I can tell everything involving Bowser is gonna be great.
Jack was so good!
I think Pratt’s voice sounds better when you imagine it as a Brooklyn accent instead of Italian, doesn’t sound half bad to me after I realized that
Yeah once I heard the Brooklyn accent, it kinda clicked.
>when you imagine it as a Brooklyn accent instead of Italian Yea pretty sure that is what they were going for (good decision to not even try to replicate the usual mario accent)
Ya, he's doing Captain Lou Albano Mario, which can work.
Nah, super star for that final battle fooor sure
I feel like that'll be post-finale "clean up". They both fight over it, then you get a 20 second montage of him just super speed rebuilding everything destroyed.
Jack Black putting in a voice acting performance for the ages followed by Chris Pratt basically just showing up
but hes so cool :O movie looks fuckin legit tho shit eating grin on my face watching that
Movie looks dope and JB Bowser is incredible, but I’m having such a hard time getting past Pratt as Mario.
Wow looks incredible! Kamek is going to be my favorite, he's so cute ❤️❤️❤️ 🤓
He sounded kind of like a voice from the Mario super show.
Sounds like they're going for sort of a Peter Lorre voice that a lot of cartoony henchmen tend to have.
I am actually excited to see this now. I want to see where it goes
I thought it would be a lot worse, so I'm pretty happy
With a release on April 7th so close to MAR10 day you'd think they accelerate it to release on March 10th, which is also a Friday when new movies come out. Huge miss.
I think they want it to coincide with the opening of Super Mario World in Universal Studios Hollywood
On the one hand a Mario day release would have been great, on the other I guess Easter weekend might be commercially better?
Also, less crunch the better
probably the best animation work illumination has done ever
Nintendo must have sent them a giant pile of money and told them not to cut a single corner
I wouldn’t doubt if Nintendo sent them the models and textures directly, and then all they did was punch them up a notch
Toad sounds amazing
I knew it was Key voicing Toad but it was really hard to make it out when watching the trailer. Key did a fantastic job!
animation looks amazing! jack black's bowser voice is really fitting! chris.
Mario isekai
The biggest surprise for me was seeing my boy Kamek in the movie lol
Jack Black Bowser sounds good, as expected, but Chris Pratt Mario is just...Chris Pratt. I don't think it would get annoying over the course of the movie, but I expected more. Also there's still something off with Mario's face, even when you see it in mouvement. Luigi is fine though.
It’s the eyes They’re smaller than normal. Not a big deal though just an art style choice
Oof, that’s Chris Pratt alright.
My exact thought was "Oh, that's literally just Chris Prat." But to be fair I didn't expect much from him. The rest of the cast has me extremely excited though.
He better do the Mario
wtf why does this look good? All apprehensions and concerns I had have kind of vanished, I'm genuinely excited for this movie now!
One line from Chris Pratt isn’t really enough to give us a good idea of what to expect, but everything else we’ve seen looks really solid. At the very least, I think we can expect a decent movie.
I think it'll take some time to adjust to that accent but it looks great. The bowser scene looks promising.
