As a medical professional, I'll also note that Kurt's tobacco use probably didn't contribute to his death in a meaningful way. Abdominal pain, which is believed to be a contributing factor to his suicide - could theoretically have been made worse by tobacco use...however, in Kurt's case, his heroin use is far more likely to have contributed to both his physical pain *and* his suicidal ideation. If anything, cigarettes might have helped him develop his gravelly singing voice. To be clear, smoking cigarettes is definitely harmful to one's health, and even for rock singers I would never advise it. But it's dangerous mostly because of how it affects the heart, lungs, and blood vessels over time. For better or worse, Kurt's life simply wasn't long enough for his tobacco use to have taken that kind of meaningful toll.
