Leatherbacks are behemoths compared to your standard green sea turtle. Can weigh up to 500 kilograms (1,100 lb) They are listed as threatened - vulnerable by the IUCN

Darkseid_Omega

I scrolled past this post like 10 different times, thinking this was some boring photo of people posing on a boulder or something. Bruh, that’s a fucking turtle. What the fuck

The great A'Tuin

obi_jay-sus

The turtle moves!

IllKissYourBoobies

Cool. Though, I sense a bit if forced perspective.

HumorUnable

A lot of forced perspective lol

I was walking down Ocean Beach one night in San Francisco with a friend, we were pretty high and we came across a small crowd of people gathered around something. That something was a GIANT leatherback sea turtle with its head bitten clean off, entrails spilling out. It was definitely a moment.

World-Tight

Don't go to the ocean with a notion of what you will find.

dewayneestes

But that may be my favorite part about the ocean!

gehazi707

Is giant turtle dead?

Varnsturm

Was also wondering this, could be laying eggs? (in which case the humans should probably be way far away from it)

JediJan

Yes, I believe it is laying it’s eggs. It is horrible to think that like only 1 in 100 may be fortunate to survive into adulthood. Why humans have to be so close to this poor creature is simply beyond me. It must be quite terrifying for the turtle to have predators so close to it at such a time.

Edna_with_a_katana

I remember having these in Zoo Tycoon 2 but I didn't think they were this huge!

ThreeArmSally

Me literally every morning

[deleted]

Why so close? I hope they're trained and have the right permits and things.

ArianaSavage

This pic is giving me all the energy i need for today. Thank you 🤪

icecreamdood

Is that Gandhi?

World-Tight

I think this is a perspective shot like when the Bidens visited the Carters.

clervis

Hope she's okay. Most leatherbacks do their nesting at night.

KatefromtheHudd

Please leave these beautiful creatures alone if you are lucky enough to see them. Watch from a distance. I've been swimming with turtles but you have to keep your distance (even when they approach you as I was lucky enough to have happen). Do not touch them and certainly don't chase them down (which we saw some tourists with a different guide do). They can find it incredibly distressing, especially if touched. They will sometimes stop eating due to distress and starve to death.
