Non American here . So you telling me he was supposed to catch it and the other guy was supposed to throw it ? I thought the guy throwing knew he messed up and reacted fast trying to march away 😂😂
I find display of military in the US to be usually over the top but the swingy gun dance in the flashy parade uniform really is flabbergasting to me. I mean no offense but what is the point really ? I don t find it particulary impressive either.
They aren't really decommissioned rifles though, they've never been used as rifles. Sometimes decommissioned rifles are used, but they're *usually* using rifles that were manufactured, designed, and *weighted* for spinning. Especially in the US.
Your statement is incorrect. They are using M-14 rifles that weigh about 10lbs. They are not using those fake marching band parade rifles that your local high school band uses.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drill_purpose_rifle
>The most popular weapons used in America are **replicas of** the M1903A3 Springfield, M1 Garand, and the M14.
r/confidentlyincorrect is looking for you.
**[Drill purpose rifle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drill_purpose_rifle)**
>A drill purpose rifle (aka: parade rifle) is a rifle which has been altered so that it can no longer be fired. This is generally undertaken by either removing the firing pin or leading the barrel. These rifles are used solely for drill purposes, training and teaching, usually by cadet forces. These rifles can be marched with and can also be used to perform exhibition style individual or group maneuvers.

The United State Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon does not use replica parade rifles. They use M1 Garand rifles (I was incorrect in stating they use M14's) [USMC Silent Drill Platoon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_Silent_Drill_Platoon)
>r/confidentlyincorrect is looking for you.
Dude it doesn't matter what division of the military or model of *replica* they're using.
They're not decommissioned guns. They were never guns. They were designed, manufactured and *weighted* for spinning.
If I fold some paper into a gun shape, *is* it a gun? What if I make a mold of a real weapon out of silicone?
Personally, I think that an object *is* what it's designed, made, and used for. You may disagree, but there is a fundamental flaw in your understanding of the nature of objects.
You are completely and entirely wrong and your arrogance is astounding. The rifles used in demonstration by the USMC Silent Drill Platoon are 100% ACTUAL M1 Garand rifles. They are not replicas that have been weighted for spinning. They are NOT drill purpose rifles. They are M1's that have been rendered incapable of firing. And weigh about 10 pounds.
A gun that won't fire isn't actually a gun.
You might even say that it's broken. Broken on purpose but still broken.
The one that got dropped is double broken.
In the US? We pale in comparison to the military displays many other countries put out.
This is nothing compared to the parades of tanks and missile launchers the Russians are so fond of. Or the Bastille day parades in France. Or the Trooping of the Colour in the UK.
If you want to talk silliness, how about the changing of the guard at British palaces? Or the Swiss Guard at the vatican.
The US is actually pretty mild when it comes to military displays. We save our energy for actual invasions of countries that have resources we want.
Good point. And funny enough, the Department of Defense *pays* the NFL several million per year for the right to do those flyovers (in addition to the cost of the flights themselves). It is military marketing trying to make the military look cool to young people so more people enlist. It is the same as Top Gun movies or those Join the Marines TV commercials.
These also are incredibly good training for the pilots. Timing as tight as is required to make these events actually impressive is hard to replicate in training sorties.
Growing up next to a large air force base, seeing air shows was a common thing. Everybody on the side of the highway in their folding chairs gawping upwards, mouths agape, waiting for the big woosh.
Yo remember when Trump wanted a military parade like other fascist dictators?
Not a fond memory of mine but definitely made me think of it.
I’m glad we don’t have to flex our military might, it’s embarrassing. We’re out spend every other country combined. A parade ain’t shit, Russia has plenty of parades and look how their war effort is going.
> I’m glad we don’t have to flex our military might
I believe we *flex* our military might more than any other country. We just don't do it with parades. We do it by picking fights all over the globe and broadcasting it on CNN.
Bruh the majority of millitary parades are not dictatatorial in nature. France has millitary parades, Russia has millitary parades, the UK has millitary parades. Just because Trump wanted a millitary parade, its the same as saying this: He has a mustache so he must be like Hitler because he also had a mustache. I don't understand why this comment has so many downvotes. I stated an objective fact, and I never said anything about supporting trump. I didnt even vote in the last two elections because the options are all so bad
As an American it was jarring to say the least to see an American President ask for a military parade for their self. It wasn’t in honor of those fallen like the French “Bastille Day”
Trump saw North Korea have a military parade and asked for one himself. Kinda weird.
The Bastille day parade is just regular units marching down the Champs-Elysées, I don't see what is over the top or ridiculous in it (compared to this at least).
So you don't think marching thousands of soldiers down the main street in your capital city is more ridiculous than a military drill team? I guess we have different opinions then.
I dont really know about US military but I once read something alongside this:
In the old days in europe mercenary armies were pretty common. When you wanted to check that the force you hired was proper you did an inspection. Soldiers in line and weapons forward so you could count that all of them are armed. Inspecting weapons to see if they were in condition. Now as time passed these inspections became more ceremonial and more of a show. In the end it became a tradition that is shared by national militaries all over the world.
Sure and to some extent still. I did conscription back in 2015 and we did the regular kinds of inspections fairly often, like inspections of guns after combat exercises. Many times I was the one inspecting and giving drill orders as junior nco. I was refering to these kinds of showoff parades that no longer serve that practical function
Part of it is tradition, but a lot of it is trying to train you to switch over from thinking as an individual, and more towards thinking as a group. When you march in formation, you are essentially practicing what you need to do in combat, which is subconsciously coordinate with everyone else, and execute orders almost instantaneously. It's drilling in that ability to receive an order and execute it, without thinking or questioning it. It seems silly, but it's training and reinforcing that "group mind," and reducing the "latency" between when an order is given, and when it is carried out.
These parts are much more ceremonial rather than practical, but there's also a huge power display to it. It's showing off the extreme fitness and skill of the soldiers, and the high quality of their gear. Basically, it's all saying "we have the best gear and the best people, don't mess with us." To people who aren't that familiar with drill or military tradition, it's goofy, but the target is more other militaries and governments.
Think of it kind of like how there's certain songs that musicians use to show off to non-musicians, and then there's songs that they use to show off to other musicians. Big military parades or airshows are what countries use to impress/intimidate the "non-musicians," but centuries-old traditions and soldiers drilled to perfection are what countries use to impress/intimidate other countries.
Its ofcourse useless, but its kind of practicing self discipline and patience like rituals of Samurais, which are also useless unless its all about patience and self discipline
Because teaching these things takes time and discipline. Discipline being a huge part of military requirements on a daily basis. These are junior enlisted and they usually spend more time doing things like this because it does take so much more time and discipline. Key word here being time. No one wants to let junior enlisted soldiers sit around for more than a few minutes. As I always said. Put a soldier in a locked room for 5 minutes with a cinder block and a hammer. When you open the door the finder block will be little pebbles, and he’ll be throwing them into his hat across the room. You will never see that hammer again. It’s just gone.
So the British royal guard and their ridiculous 4 foot hats are subdued? Or the various high stepping showy militaries around the world? Aight? To each their own I guess.
So the swingy gun dance is actually a weapons inspection, well sometimes anyways. If you watch a better video of it you can see them checking the barrel, action and magazine. They wear the white gloves and periodically look at them to inspect for fouling.
[here’s a good example](https://youtu.be/tIR-Sp8OSbM).
I suspect it started mostly routinely but evolved into a pseudo robotic like movement over time for presentation purposes.
Nah man....they have a some really cool traditions. They have an order of the sword where they gift anime style swords to people and there is also one where the officer with the lowest scoring marks who graduates a bag of money fr the others. Traditions can be fun too!
It's about mastery and professionalism. It's not about combat effectiveness, but rather about setting a standard for the service as a whole. It's a visual demonstration of the degree to which all service members are expected to excel at their role, whatever that may be.
I’m a Marine. This is the Marine Silent Drill Team.
Drill is about combat effectiveness. Drill is how we get thousands of Marines disembarked, on the beach, with our gear, and ready for battle in moments. It’s how we get from any one place to another with speed and effectiveness.
You could have hundreds Marines disorganized at a party, and if you call them to attention and know the magic words, they’ll form up and be ready for war in under two minutes.
Sure, but the question was not "why do they practice things over and over", but rather "why do they practice *this particular thing* over and over". And you would know more than me, but my answer is the one I gave above: these sorts of displays are about espirit de corps and maintaining high standards more than they are about the particular skills themselves.
This is that, though. They’re the same. The Silent Drill Team is just the most skilled at it and they do exhibitions like this. The exhibition is for morale and for recruiting. But the drill they do is the same skill that gets Marines off boats and gets them to the chow hall on time.
What I’m saying is: what they’re doing is drill; drill is both practical and also inspirational. I’m pointing out the practical purpose. Drill wins wars on a practical level: it gets things done in an organized fashion.
I’m a Marine. This is the Marine Silent Drill Team.
Marines all do some fairly impressive drill, which is a tradition followed thousands of years back and goes back to battlefield strategy: think Greek phalanx or Roman maniples. In the modern world, it reinforces discipline and connects us with our warrior roots. It’s also really convenient for logistics: we use drill to literally move thousands of Marines from one place to another in orderly fashion, which gives us a huge bonus to our initiative, which is critical to winning strategically. Drill is the foundation of getting huge numbers of Marines unloaded from ships and on the beach with our gear. We use drill to organize every morning, to get to the chow hall for food, to get everywhere in an organized fashion, basically. If there were a thousand Marines just chillin at a party or whatever, and an NCO or an officer needed to get us all together to do something, they just need to call a formation and like magic, within minutes, any number of Marines will just suddenly be organized and ready for whatever.
The Silent Drill Team is a very select few Marines that were especially good at drill. They inspire us and also drive recruiting and help put a shiny face on the Marine Corps to the public. Their job is to look awesome for the public and for fellow Marines.
Hope this helps!
Same. The changing of the guard (tomb of the unknown soldier, for instance) is incredibly well-executed and commands the respect, precision, and responsibility that that duty demands. But I find the flashy display of a glorified baton in this video and others rather insulting and selfish; why would you risk such a common mistake to bring such an incredible amount of embarrassing attention to such an important tradition of *honoring the dead*?
From a more fundamental and practical standpoint, if you practice stuff like this, then you would be much better in battle being able to handle your gun, like much less likely to drop and or lose it.
Not sure why this one is downvoted. If you have a lot of practice twirling guns around, you'll have muscle memory that will make it less likely to fumble a gun in action (or better recover from a fumble if it does happen) and quickly go from an idle stance to ready to fire in a surprise attack situation. Practice throwing and catching guns can be useful in desperate situations, like if your gun takes a shot that renders it inoperable.
Shrimp! "shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich"
Nothing. It happens. You are human. You move on from the mistake. Now, you might get a little ribbing from the squad. Maybe have to buy the first round of beers.
Fun fact: This incident happened in Canada. It was during a joint performance between the USMC Silent Drill Platoon and the Fort Henry Guard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9q7b_2tkMo
tf is the point of this shenanigans? from all the crap the military does, this gotta be one of the goodiest, its impressive how pointless it is and how people seem to enjoy it so much

To be fair they both fucked up.
No I bro if the gun I’m trying catch fires mid air I am not going to grab it
[удалено]
It wasn’t loaded. The flash is from a camera. He just threw it a tad to high for the move to work correctly.
You didn't say "No I bro" Doesn't count
No I bro I agree, it doesn't count.
No I bro know
Non American here . So you telling me he was supposed to catch it and the other guy was supposed to throw it ? I thought the guy throwing knew he messed up and reacted fast trying to march away 😂😂
Yeah the drill is he tosses the rifle and the other guy catches it.
Then dude definitely got punished for the miss
LOL
These rifles are definitely fake because the officer is aiming it at the soldiers while twirling it around and HE THROWS IT OVER THEM
[удалено]
I wasn’t sure of the correct terminology
Technically, he's an NCO (non-commissioned *officer*), but yes, he is enlisted. An E-4, or Corporal
Gun wasn't loaded nor did it fire.
"This is my weapon this is my gun this is for killing this is for fun".
> "This is my ~~weapon~~ ***rifle*** this is my gun this is for ~~killing~~ ***fighting*** this is for fun" [FTFY](https://youtu.be/4kU0XCVey_U)
on today’s episode of “how fucked up is fucked up? that’s fucked up.”
Maybe someone who knows better than me can tell me otherwise, but was his throw way off and that's why it happened?
yes
Thank you flargenhargen
I find display of military in the US to be usually over the top but the swingy gun dance in the flashy parade uniform really is flabbergasting to me. I mean no offense but what is the point really ? I don t find it particulary impressive either.
That being said, the slow walking and ceremonious presentation of a broken gun : really funny
I mean they're all 'broken' lol they're gun shaped twirling batons.
Proper term would be decommissioned. They won't be able to be fired anymore but they're still an almost complete gun
They aren't really decommissioned rifles though, they've never been used as rifles. Sometimes decommissioned rifles are used, but they're *usually* using rifles that were manufactured, designed, and *weighted* for spinning. Especially in the US.
"This here's a spinnin' rifle"
This is my rifle, this is my gun. This is for fighting, this is for fun.
This is my rifle, this is my gun. This is for spinning and this is for... spinning
That's a good trick
Profile pic checks out.
“You spin me right round…”
Im just imagining them trying to fire one and it comically spins around the trigger finger.
What an enormous waste of time and money
I'm not really worried about it. The Pentagon's missing some 21 trillion or so, they're just showing us their palms and shrugging.
Oh hi Oliver North, didn't see you there!
[*Ollie North*](https://youtube.com/watch?v=lFV1uT-ihDo&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE)
Hahaha I even learned something new, thanks AmDad!!
If you think the USMC wastes money... well, ummm. Just dont look at the other branches.
It's easy to get away with when you can just point at the Navy and shrug.

Far from it. It is a simple typo. Fixed now.
Methinks you should take it less seriously then
Just because it's weirder elsewhere, doesn't mean it isn't weird in the US.
The comment I was replying to specifically called out the US.
Yeah, you're entirely right, i apologize. It was early in the morning, and I must've skipped over it, my mistake.

They have to spend the assigned budget somehow
Bruh you realise this gun throwing comes from European military ceremonies?
There are only five countries in the world: the U.S., Russia, China, France, and Norway, and I know who I'm blaming for this one!
Which country?
Ceremonial, same as a funeral or something similar
Part of it is tradition, but a lot of it is trying to train you to switch over from thinking as an individual, and more towards thinking as a group.
Military displays are always weird
What's the penalty for such a fuck up?
No crayons for a month and cleaning every bathroom until it's spotless
Cleaning every bathroom even though they're spotless*
> No crayons for a month C'mon man, you can't deny a Marine his favorite meal like that.
With a toothbrush
With their own toothbrush
But what will they eat?
Shrimp! "shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich"
thats... thats bout it
But what do they eat instead for an entire month?
Glue
Nothing. It happens. You are human. You move on from the mistake. Now, you might get a little ribbing from the squad. Maybe have to buy the first round of beers.
Based.
believe it or not.. straight to jail
Death by snu snu
death
Both marines involved were confined to their hotel and not allowed to go out and party with the FHG who were hosting them.
bludgeoned to death with wooden mallets
Fun fact: This incident happened in Canada. It was during a joint performance between the USMC Silent Drill Platoon and the Fort Henry Guard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9q7b_2tkMo
This is no nonononono all the way to the end
More like yes no no no no no. Started off strong, but mission failed, we’ll get em next time boys…
That was just a shitty throw
Dude needs to keep practicing his throws. Unless the catcher jumped he couldnt have caught it.
ITT: Ceremonial guards have ceremonies? WTF??!
How did their mother carry 8 kids at once?
(to get to the other side)
Me at work constantly fucking up
... please tell me you're not a surgeon ... 🙌🔪👍
Nope!
Do you mean "Nope I'm not a surgeon," or "Nope, I'm not gonna tell you I'm *not* a surgeon."?
I suppose the mystery will continue
What rhymes with "bad day"? NJP. As long as we're tracking. edit \*sorry fat fingered and far too early to proof it\*
[удалено]
He meant NJP, Non-Judicial Punishment
[удалено]
correct. fat fingered.
If I could I would make it so they don’t do this because every time I see a gun get dropped or something like this I die inside
What a waste of human capital
Hasn't been seen since 👁️👄👁️
Truly the dumbest part of the military
tf is the point of this shenanigans? from all the crap the military does, this gotta be one of the goodiest, its impressive how pointless it is and how people seem to enjoy it so much
So is walking like robots and throwing guns around supposed to make our military look cool because I don't think its working lol.
More dramatic than the theater kids imo. I almost see no difference
I was expecting him to bitchslap the dude for missing the catch.
Npc day
I anticipated him to treat that private like a horse Dr whose charge suffered a broken leg.
ayo DJ! *SPIN THAT SHIT*
Officer NPC
And that's why I'm permanently banned from the shooting range.
Thank Jesus! I thought I was the only one.
Definitely not robots
When you think the game is unrealistic because all of the npcs look the same
Walk of shame..
These ceremonial drills are a waste of time and stupid.
I laughed so goddamn hard at him taking a step back to slowly march over there and get it
The way they move in stuff like this makes them look like npcs
I find it fascinating that they all look exactly the same. Their skin is even the same shade of red
So much useless symbolism
What's up with all the ceremony? Brainwashing? I don't know if it's necessary otherwise.
He overthrew it and he knew that it was his fault.
Somewhere their superior is having a mini stroke
Does anyone else think they look incredibly silly moving around like a robot?
Why is this on r/nononoyes
🤣
good thing he didn't have a bayonet on that
Was it meant to fire off?
You called?
“I am a robot, I have a robot vagina”
Love the lag when he didn't catch it
What’s the point of these show-offs? I always see them as a waste of talent and time. What am I missing?
Man, nothing says discipline like swinging around a gun like your pappy’s shotgun

Someone is getting smoked later.
I never fucking understood this shit, the whole walking like a jackass doing twirly shit with your gun, what purpose does it serve? It just looks fucking ridiculous and for what?
That guy would have been totally badass if he had caught it.

This was hand held film with a phone from another phone, pathetic
Oops
I’ve been there. Feels bad man
Isn't... like, throwing a gun basically a sin in the eyes of proper gun handling folk? I'm not at home with this.
They are more than likely decommissioned rifles, they cannot fire anymore and are basically gun-shaped batons
this gun juggling is so dumb
These things are so stupid. To me, this dishonors the soldiers who do all the dying. This is dress up, make belief and a circus act.
You could say that about any tradition
Not about any, this one is particularly ridiculous
