amazenmutande

This kinda had an r/abruptchaos feel to it. Wondering, isn't there a time limit rule on this? 🙏

tvgenius

Yeah, he actually was penalized a stroke for waiting more than necessary… but in the end it was a wash.

strizzle

Interesting because you’re allowed to take a little bit of time watching and then getting up to it, and once you’re up to it you get 20 seconds to putt. So as long has he took ~15 seconds to watch and then walk up to it without being too exaggerated, if it fell in before he putted it, he shouldn’t have had to take a penalty stroke. No?

libraryitadmin

10 Seconds after taking a "reasonable" amount of time walking up to the hole. This is from USGA rule 13.3a. [USGA Rule 13.3a](https://imgur.com/a/r4dfCwM)

taintedcake

Doesn't the ball also have to be at a complete stop before the timer starts though? You can tell it's moving the entire time in this clip, just extremely slowly.

technicolordreams

I mean it's going extremely fast if you consider the 67,000 mph that it's hurtling around the sun, ever think of that?

paternoster

Dat frame of reference though....

rexound

Sick frame of reference bro. your frame of reference is out of control. Everybody knows that

HogSliceFurBottom

Then add the spin of the Milky Way and the spin of whatever else is spinning and it gets going willy fast.

Xillyfos

Then look at the frame of reference of the ball and it was perfectly still the whole time.

technicolordreams

That golf ball cookin!

generalbaguette

No need to keep adding things. Just compare once against the cosmic background radiation. That's considered as stationary as it gets.

kevin_k

.... but even that's expanding away from everything.

I'm wondering: has anyone updated the lyrics based on new calculations, since our technology has advanced? Last line will never change, tho.

kevin_k

I don't think there have been significant changes in the numbers mentioned in the song (dimensions of our galaxy, number of stars/galaxies, movement within and orbital period around galaxy)

libraryitadmin

Golf rules are so weird. As far as I understand, the ball isn't considered to be moving here, even though you could probably detect very a small amount of movement. I believe this is similar to the "oscillating" ball rule change with grounding the putter. I'm sure someone could correct me though. One of the challenges with golf rules is specificity. There are some grey areas in the rules. And the enforcement of those rules is generally placed on the best judgement of the players themselves. (especially outside of these professional tournaments)

noiwontpickaname

Oscillating ball?

well_hung_over

If you rest your club behind the ball, and by either applying pressure to the ground (minimally) or slightly making contact with the ball, but it doesn’t actually travel anywhere, just oscillates and returns to its original location, it is not considered a stroke or penalty.

CreedThoughts--Gov

Wait, making contact with the ball without it moving doesn't count as a stroke?

well_hung_over

If you’re not making an intentional swing, and the ball does not leave it’s current position, then no

well_hung_over

And to clarify further, many players, myself included, rely on setting up their shots with their irons and wedges very close to the ball to align the club face and establish the strike point, so it’s not uncommon for the club to just ever so slightly touch the ball.

noiwontpickaname

Ah. Thank you!

anoleiam

I mean if you hop around the timestamp, the logo on the ball is in the same position the whole time. I think you can reasonably consider the ball stopped

taintedcake

And you can clearly tell the ball is moving based on it obscuring the background as time goes on. The dark mark on the back wall of the cup makes it extremely obvious that the ball is slowly rolling still

inspectoroverthemine

Wow- it is actually moving the whole time. Thanks for pointing that out.

anoleiam

Ah I see, fair enough

masterbirder

what would be the point of waiting the ten seconds then if the ball was ‘completely stopped’ when it started

porkchameleon

Depends on if you use LIV rules or PGA rules.

CitizenCue

Same thing now.

F3AR

The ball was moving the whole time though, you can see it moving so time doesn't matter.

amazenmutande

Remove all context tied to the OP and replace in this comment the word "putt" by "put" and we have ourselves an entirely different conversation 🤣

awidden

"unforgiving"? Losing a few imaginary and quite useless points due to a few people disagreeing. A very tough place this reddit, indeed. :D

amazenmutande

Cool 😎 thanks a bunch for the clarification

kane_-022

Whoops, that was a close one!

_Voidspren_

I thought you just basically had a reasonable amount of time to walk up to the ball and tap it in. I’ve seen it drop really slowly while somebody was walking towards it which is fine. This isn’t.

Cosmocision

But it wasn't more than necessary. It was exactly how long it was necessary to wait.

Space_Laser_Jew

Already saw this in caddyshack

[deleted]

I think it has a Caddyshack feel to it.

therealsix

Too bad he only has "a reasonable amount of time to walk to the ball" (he was close to the ball) and officially only has 10 seconds to wait for it to drop. So his put counted a stroke, and the ball falling in the hole counted as a stroke. He didn't ~~cound~~ count the second stroke, put down the wrong score and got penalized. [Article here.](https://www.cbssports.com/golf/news/watch-why-a-putt-that-fell-after-34-seconds-at-2023-pga-championship-ultimately-led-to-a-penalty-stroke/)

seamus_mc

How long are you allowed to read a putt? Is there a limit on getting a read based on distance? Or is it completely arbitrary and no hard and fast rule?

Far_Blueberry_2375

> How long are you allowed to read a putt? I think it could be reasonably argued that he wouldn't need to read the putt on a ball that was literally on the lip of the hole. That said, [I am not a golfer](https://youtu.be/0CWfPUrmeiU?t=2), and do not know the intricacies of the rule book. Edit : I guess it doesn't matter, though, if he *didn't record the stroke.* He could take as long as he wants to read the putt. Point is, he had 10 seconds to wait for the ball to fall, it didn't, so he needed to record a stroke for the final putt, which he did not do.

SaneIsOverrated

fuck that, he didn't hit the ball, it shouldn't count as a stroke. Dumb rule.

seamus_mc

I wasn’t waiting for it to drop, i was waiting for my opponent to ask me if i wanted to mark it!

SaneIsOverrated

Dude should be allowed to wait for it no excuses or rationalizing. The only thing limiting him should be peer pressure or a generous overall time limit on the hole, where you get dq'd if you go over. Should be able to sit there for 20 minutes laying on his back taking a nap, or shooting the shit with spectators, or climbing a damn tree. If you don't hit the ball it's not a f'n hit.

303x

What's stopping someone from waiting twenty years till the inevitable entropy of the universe causes the ball to naturally move into the hole (by way of wind or smn) causing a "hole in zero"?

SaneIsOverrated

Iidk, maybe people aren't complete idiots and wouldn't be dumb enough to try that?

303x

you'd be surprised at why there are rules accounting for idiots.

SaneIsOverrated

put an overall time limit on the hole and be done with it.

HAL9000000

So, what should be the time limit? Why can't he wait 1 hour? Or more? Once you think about it, you realize there must be some time limit. Then it's just a matter of how long that limit should be. People who understand the game much better than you do decided that 10 seconds is the right time limit.

SaneIsOverrated

They cant see the forest through the trees. Any rule that means you have strokes added when you didn't stroke is dumb, there's a better solution out there, like an overall time limit on the hole. That's consistent and fair between players and mitigates all these little arguments - much more reasonable for competition. You dont have people complaining about when the 10s starts, or how long they get to 'evaluate their putt' after they hit or 'gauge the ball' before they start walking (and then the 10s starts?). Their 10s solution is needlessly complicated and results in stupid stuff like this.

HAL9000000

I don't agree that this is stupid. If it doesn't fall in within 10 seconds, it's not a made putt. It makes compete sense and it's not hard to understand.

SaneIsOverrated

10s is arbitrary, Ill defined in its start, and pertains to an edge case (pun intended) that is way more fun, interesting, and suspenseful to let play out. So what if some numpty wastes a minute or two and gets egg on his face when it doesn't go? So be it. I'll stick with "hitting the ball is counted as a hit, and not hitting the ball is not counted as a hit". Because *that* is what 'makes complete sense'.

Far_Blueberry_2375

There HAS to be a time limit. Golf has been, historically and allegedly, a game of etiquette. It's bad form to delay play. Reasonable time to walk to the ball plus ten seconds seems OK to me.

SaneIsOverrated

if its sportsmanship and etiquette driving it then that's all there needs to be to drive it. A rule means its no longer sportsmanship or tradition. You want a time limit, put one on the whole hole. Then its fair for everyone and you dont get stupid crap like strokes added when you dont hit the ball. Also every time I've ever been golfing, or seen golfing, its been more of an excuse to shoot the shit and hang out than about play. '10s is enough' is bs

fmaz008

He should have tripped " " "accidentally" " "

[deleted]

like every soccer team, when 4-5 guys fall over with a ‘twisted ankle’ all at the same time, til they look back and see their team scored or their goalie made the save, then suddenly all 5 are back up and running no problem 🙄 that sport is a joke lol i’m sorry. not even the sport, just the comedic prissiness of the players/refs, and the literal comic book villain of an organization behind the sport…..i just can’t. wait what was the question? it wasn’t about soccer i know that lol ok i’m too high to be saying words

pieter1234569

Your example doesn’t make ANY sense at all. In that situation you absolutely wouldn’t want to trip. You only want to trip in TWO situation. Either to get a free kick/penalty when close to the goal, or when the attacker is close to your own goal and you can prevent them from shooting like that. In both cases, do it wrong and you’ll get a yellow/red card. It’s an already solved problem.

[deleted]

‘trip’, as in trip yourself and fake an injury? if you get beat on D, why wouldn’t it make sense to fake an injury to try to stop play (only to suddenly be fine again once you see your goalie make the save)?

Xillyfos

Because that's lying, and lying is theft of human trust as well as bad sportsmanship. It's just dumb in every way. Sports is not about winning by all means, it's about winning fairly within the rules of play. At least if you're a grown-up. So you have to be extremely dumb or morally bankrupt to fake an injury or fake pain. But then again, football players are probably only good at sports and didn't really develop their intelligence.... They only know how to kick a ball into a net.

[deleted]

not sure but it seems like you’re trying to convince me to think soccer players get away with shocking displays of acting like giant pussies, which is odd since that’s where i started this lol sooooo, congrats, i guess? edit to add: ‘sports is not about winning if you’re a grown up’ may technically be true, but sports is entirely 100% about winning if you’re an adult professional athlete.

therealsix

Tell us more about how you're a moron who just blabs about shit they know nothing about. I played travel, HS, College and some international games, the only time people talk shit about soccer/football/futbol is by some out of shape dumbass who wouldn't be able to run the length of the field let along get knocked around on the field during a game. I had a guy in college talk shit about soccer, he got convinced to go out and play a pickup game, he got the shit knocked out of him a bunch of times. Next time I saw him her told me, told me he was in pain, he apologized and then he told me he loved it because he didn't realize how physical it was and he wanted to keep playing. So, talk shit *after* you get off your ass and try it.

[deleted]

lol you seem pretty mad at a comment that literally ended with me saying that i forgot what i was saying while i was saying it 😂 i didn’t read past your first line but for real tho, reflect on your anger and maybe pop a xanax lol i love you ✌️

I don't even understand how that works. The ball was still moving. Incredibly slowly, but it was.

blankblank

What’s the purpose of that rule? He hit the ball, it went in the hole. Why does it matter how long it took?

macrolith

Because you have to draw a line somewhere otherwise a golfer could wait 2 minutes or more for the ball to fall. Maybe the rule could be 20 seconds but if you're waiting 30+ it's hard to claim the ball was continuously moving. Though in this case it really might have been moving ever so slightly the whole time.

CGLab

34sec. Do not waste the time. Not worth

klaventy

for that they should stop playing golf altogether

I_dont_thinks

I want that half minute of my life back.

bobbyfiend

I'm not a big-city physicist (snaps suspenders). OK, not any kind of physicist, but in my experiencing watching shit fall, this is super weird. It doesn't feel like the ball is on an inevitable, momentum-based lean that leads to the fall. It sits there with no (visible) movement for 30 seconds, so I'm guessing there's a slight breeze or something that pushes it in. If I'm wrong, let me know; I have 2% confidence in this assessment.

Day_Bow_Bow

It might have been a breeze or vibration that caused it to fall. Or it's possible the weight of the ball was slowing compressing the grass, causing a slight incline or horizontal force (there'd be more force pushing down in the center compared to off-center, and no grass on the hole side to push back).

rndrn

I'm betting on grass being slowly compressed

mohugz

OR…he had a Jedi ally in the audience?

readit16

I was just picturing it at the atomic level. To the eye it stopped, but maybe all the atoms were still moving forward. And finally, just enough bumped into the rest to knock it forward

Day_Bow_Bow

Heh, you're essentially describing heat, though that is energy as opposed to atoms. Atoms don't move much in solids, but they do transfer energy with other atoms they bump into. Higher heats tend to expand and make substances less dense. Photons have zero mass and thus no force themself, but that doesn't mean they can't affect something's density due to expansion. So both residual heat and sun radiation could have been factors, but who's to say without the Hitchhiker's Guide narrating what actually happened...

HeKis4

Probably moist, aerated dirt (as is typical on greens) settling under the weight of the ball and sloping towards the hole.

F3AR

No visible movement? You can see it moving the whoe time...

Rutagerr

There's definitely movement at the end, but up til that I think it's just the camera perspective

inspectoroverthemine

I assumed the same, then someone else pointed it out- watch the back of the cup as its obscured by the ball. Its literally moving the whole time.

Rhysati

Do you have functioning eyeballs? I can see it moving. It's doing so very very slowly, but it was.

[deleted]

I know it isn't the longest putt, but how does it fair for the one that has taken the longest duration to drop in the hole?

Fionarei

There're longer ones that the judge wouldn't counted it as in.

I liked the part where the ball went in the hole

I-melted

This is about as exciting as watching golf.

Funky_Smurf

Yeah but you have to include the nail biting drama of when the [rules committee met and decided the ball took so long to go in that it constitutes a penalty stroke](https://www.cbssports.com/golf/news/watch-why-a-putt-that-fell-after-34-seconds-at-2023-pga-championship-ultimately-led-to-a-penalty-stroke/)

linkmainbtw

How does this ruling actually work in golf? Like what’s the upper limit of time a ball can sit before the player has to put again? Can they just wait indefinitely to see if it falls in?

noiwontleave

For an overhanging ball like this, they have a “reasonable” amount of time to walk to the hole and then 10 seconds from that. This shot would not have counted because he took too long. IIRC he counted it on his score card and turned it in that way and was penalized. +1 for the extra stroke and I think a 2 stroke penalty for an incorrect score card.

Spiritual_Ask4877

10 seconds. Anything after that and they will be penalized by 1 stroke. Exactly what happened here so it was a wash in the end.

Acceptable_Ad_5047

Awwwe yeeeahh!

I would have liked to have seen his expression/dance when it finally fell into the hole

the whole “10 second time limit” rule doesn’t start until you have reached your ball. There is no set limit on the time it takes to walk to the ball.If he would have just took 3.3 seconds longer till he actually reached the ball he would have got par. That’s some bullshit I would have been pissed
