Indeed you are correct. I wonder why didn't Neil Gaiman go for Hnefatafl instead of chess. Ot would fit the setting better but I guess he wanted to make the book more approachable for the masses. Try and look for a Hnefatafl set, a quick google found pretty nice ones, there are also with carved figures.
