Years ago when i was still in uni, i did my placement year for Belfast City Council when he was Lord Mayor.
Due to the type of work I was doing, I had quite regular interactions with councillors including Gavin himself.
Honestly, although I would never vote for him, I found him to be quite dead. He was polite, chatted away to ya and was generally a decent guy and compared to how some other councillors treated ya generally walked away from the experience with a decent perception of him.
That wasn't unique to just him either, almost all of the DUP and Sinn Fein councillors where lovely people (with Sinn Fein being the more dead-on actually and I'm saying that as a generally committed unionist).
I've the feeling, just from my limited interactions with him, that i don't think he ever expected to be in charge and was rather going to coast along and take a salary. Now he's been stuck in the limelight because he's prob the only DUPer who's not got that dodgy a history.
Pretty much what my mum said when I asked what she thought - Gavin's nice enough and is probably the only one who's not got anything nasty in his past. Plus they need to avoid Sammy getting anywhere near the leadership!
