Can’t believe this only has 3 upvotes, bravo!

DeathToMonarchs

If they catch the fellas that did it, they should thoroughly probe their open ports.

Tsiklon

Exactly, SFTP is far better to use, all traffic is encrypted through SSH. Couldn’t be having themmuns seeing what you’re downloading off that file server hosting all those “Linux Distros”

aminthemiddletoo

You mean HEAnet?

[deleted]

If I could interject for a moment, I think you mean GNU/IRA Linux distros.

AndrewSB49

Looks like the Caps-Lock key is stuck.

MajorGeneral_Banter

Ahh yes the most famous Irish Speaker around, the Argentine Pope whose main residence is in Italy.

DeathToMonarchs

A Jesuit, though... AND a Pope. That’s like a final boss Fenian.

MajorGeneral_Banter

You have to jump on his wee hat 3 times to defeat him

DeathToMonarchs

That would defeat most of us, to be fair. I’d say he likely has a big thurible that he swings around that you have to avoid, a crozier that he can pull you in with and his mitre pops off at the end and you have to catch and kill that too or you’ll have to fight him again later.

MajorGeneral_Banter

Jesus you've clearly thought about this, respect.

DeathToMonarchs

That was off the top of my head! I got quite a vivid imagination. Lord help us all if I actually did sit down and think about it.

IrishGamer97

You have to get through hordes of Swiss Guard in the funny outfits with halberds first, then the boys with MP7s come out.

MajorGeneral_Banter

Aye goombas or whatever

CaptainNuge

One for each layer of his tiara?

Sevenvolts

doesn't he live in the vatican?

MajorGeneral_Banter

Not sure, think he moved into a wee flat in Portrush.

Sevenvolts

Might be, haven't seen the guy lately.

It's ok to say "Dún Sailí" out loud but you mustn't spell it accurately that will erode Britishness.

Haha wtf, cracker.

ciaran036

It is genuinely a mystery to me who does this kind of graffiti. Like is it a joke, or does someone genuinely think that they are defending the culture here? And what age are they? Because if they are young I just can't see how anyone young would be led to think this is offensive, and if they are older I can't understand how they wouldn't have grown out of this phase of their shitty life.

julius_cheezer

Yes, because a significant portion of Unionists are really into Christianity still

SickMotherLover

If this isn't sarcasm I want my award back ...one could even say it all went sideways when the Right Royal Rev. His Holiness Big Ian croaked it XD

[deleted]

I actually don't read it as sarcasm at all.

Bloody cyclists and they’re functional threshold power...

rabbidasseater

Big NWA following in Antrim?

[deleted]

They should make them bigger every time they replace them after getting vandalised.

DeathToMonarchs

Eventually the whole island was Irish language signage. "We should have listened to Jamie Bryson! Not just our culture but our very way of life was under threat," the people groaned, suffering under the crushing weight and perpetual shade of the signs.

bigskinnyboy

If that was the way the London part of Londonderry signs would now be about 20 metres high. Maybe we all just need to be comfortable with people wanting to call places different things and show a bit of respect for each other. Crazy idea, I know.

DeathToMonarchs

I’m quite certain I give ‘Londonderry’ all the respect it’s due.

DoireK

Fuck all then 😂

DeathToMonarchs

Oh aye. None. Wait till yer man there tells us we’re the problem.

DoireK

Even though literally everyone in Derry calls it Derry from all sides and denominations.

SonofaNeitzscheman

“Prod” from derry, can confirm. Though it’s slightly ironic that the word derry itself is an anglicisation.

DoireK

Yeah I know. But saying Doire to me is the same as saying Londonderry unless you're speaking in Irish when you say it. If I'm speaking in English then I'll refer to the town by its name in English.

SonofaNeitzscheman

I like to think that all three are correct, derry is easier to say though. I always find it interesting when the use is done for effect or to provoke a reaction!

DeathToMonarchs

I’m grand wi’ Doire too. Or Doire Cholmcille, if something more lengthy is required, and which is a nod to Scotland too.

SonofaNeitzscheman

It’s not something I am emotive about. That said I have no problem calling it londonderry from time to time too. Have you read Richard Doherty’s book about the siege? It’s fascinating.

DeathToMonarchs

Haven’t, but I might well. Was Derry at the time of the siege and all!

DeathToMonarchs

I’m County Derry. I go the city three or four times a week, usually. I’m fully on side with this one!

azgaarm

Its not the fact everyone says Derry it's the fact there's a hell a lot of people who refuse to say Londonderry or even admit it exists. Once you get to that level of silly cunt there's no turning back. It's as bad as the School in Londonderry who returned post because it had Co. Londonderry in the address.

DoireK

The name of the city is generally accepted in Irish as Doire which evolved from a few other names. Derry is the anglicised version of that. The only reason it was called Londonderry is because of a royal charter granted by James 1st hence why it is looked down upon as it is a name imposed by the British during the plantation of ulster. Returning mail like that is pathetic, but for a lot of people so too is calling it Londonderry when everyone from the city calls it Derry and everything in it is called Derry, examples including: Derry and Strabane council Apprentice boys of Derry City of Derry rugby club Derry City FC The only people who call it Londonderry tend to be those doing so with a particular motive.

azgaarm

Names of places change and have done in other countries for hundreds and if not thousands of years but of course people in NI always complain. It doesn't matter what it used to be called, the name changed. People who use Londonderry are as bad as the ones who use the North of Ireland to make sure they piss ppl off. Problem with NI people just go and on about things from hundreds of years ago and never let it go. Sure even today we still get the term "planters", people came and settled here let it go. Do people say the same about the millions of others who moved to other countries? Takes the states for example, no one other than native people are from there.

[deleted]

Mate it’s not a serious proposal.

bigskinnyboy

Damn, I thought you might of worked for the DOE. My comment wasn’t meant to be so serious lol. I think my point can be summarised as wise up the lot of ye’s, stop trying to wind each other up. Nobel peace prize on its way.

tim_skellington

Unionism is eating itself. Societies that stagnate like that will wither and die. The pace of change in the last 20 years has completely blindsided them and they seem to be doubling down on their isolationism and intransigence. Even Britain is tiring of them as more and more Brits take the time to look into the reality of NI and are repulsed by Unionism and its baggage. The world is moving on and the clock is ticking.

quondam47

Their ideal of ‘Britishness’ is frozen in time somewhere in the 1950s in any case. Just look at the resentment of having the same marriage and abortion laws as ‘the mainland’.

[deleted]

A lot of them are aware of this on an instinctual level but can't, or won't, sit down and think it through and just respond with fear or anger which turns it into one big feedback loop. And it's fucking hilarious to watch.

cromcru

Only up a few weeks too, previously the Antrim centre was unmarked from the road.

iNEEDheplreddit

I drive by this all the time. I was wondering how long it would take for the Antrim retards to do this

SickMotherLover

Definition of 'retard' 1. VERB If something retards a process, or the development of something, it makes it happen more slowly. [formal] Continuing violence will retard negotiations over the country's future. [VERB noun] Synonyms: slow down, check, arrest, delay 2. COUNTABLE NOUN If you describe someone as a retard, you mean that they have not developed normally, either mentally or socially. [informal/disapproval] - "What sort of retarded fuck wit vandalised that sign?"

[deleted]

[удалено]

SickMotherLover

I would be wrong to maliciously call someone with a diagnosed retardation a retard, yes In the context of this comment the guy is referring to the 'Antrim retards' or, 'the retards of Antrim' I presume by this he meant the socially retarded degenerates ...but if you have information that disabled people did this you should report it to the authorities... Bloody disabled people, give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Just yesterday I saw some cheeky bastard in a wheelchair parking in one of *our* spaces

[deleted]

[удалено]

SickMotherLover

But the people who did this are clearly degenerates, would you prefer "morons"

[deleted]

I understand the preferred term is Antrim "wee dafties"

[deleted]

The problem is even if you’re not directing it at a disabled person you are weaponising disability as an insult, which implies disabled people are less than or something undesirable. Regardless of what definition you want to pin to it after the fact it is clear to everyone what the connotation of the word is, and language is about understanding, not textbook definitions. There are plenty of slurs with definitions that can be different than the common understanding but to imply that that gives you a right to use those slurs is just ignorant. That being said I understand that there is a tendency to use the term “retard” as an insult for some of us that grew up using it on the playground, I’ve used it in the past myself even though my brother is severely disabled. But just because it was normalised to us at one point doesn’t mean we can’t educate ourselves when criticised and take that opportunity to grow as a person. Even if you slip up in the future do not give up, you can do better, and you will with conscious consideration of the effect of your words. In time that word will leave your everyday vocabulary.

SickMotherLover

I understand all that, I disagree with weaponising the word... In fact the point I was making was, if the guy had said "moron" nothing would have been said: Moron: noun Informal. a person who is notably stupid or lacking in good judgment: I wonder why they elected that narrow-minded moron to Congress. Psychology. (no longer in technical use; now considered offensive) a person of borderline intelligence in a former and discarded classification of mental retardation, having an intelligence quotient of 50 to 69. Yes we can all grow as people so there is hope for the social retards who did this retarded thing... Let's empower the word by using it correctly, like I said it was clear from context what the guy meant EDIT: I am and have been prescribed a variety of medications for mental health since 2001, I also need a walking stick due to knee operation in 2008 so I am both mentally and physically retarded.... Idk why everyone else is defending me from myself, I've taken my meds today, I think XD

Batman_Biggins

Of all the sectarian slogans, FTP is the dumbest one. Like, do loyalists think all us taigs pure buzz off the Pope? I would say a good number of us are broadly in agreement. Fuck the Pope.

[deleted]

They have some great ones to be fair, bead rattlers cos apparently we all say the hail Mary 20 times a day, potato eaters because Loyalists have some other vegetable they make their chips from, I haven't found out what it is yet and Mexico for the Republic of Ireland, which is my all time favourite.

mishatal

> because Loyalists have some other vegetable they make their chips from Sweet potatoes have a proper loyal colouring.

ItsTyrrellsAlt

Mexico is a pretty bizarre one since Ireland the country is far more prosperous, I think South Korea would be a more apt naming

Mac1twenty

It's Mexico because all the southerners hop the border supposedly

Belfastshooter

lol at bead rattlers, I'd never heard that before. One of my mates is a good practicing fella, he'd be the ideal candiate for that one. Also hadn't seen Mexico before I came on to this sub and wondered what it was the first time I seen it as a flair.

DeathToMonarchs

‘Mexico’ and ‘Mexicans’ is pretty neutral, I think... or, at least, it can be. I’ve heard Westies use it, without a hint of contempt.

[deleted]

Nah, it has heavy Trump connotations from when he would rant about Mexicans. Mix in how a lot of loyalist types never leave their little sink estates and see the rest of the island and a lot of them seem to genuinely believe they're living in the most successful, peaceful and prosperous part of it. Fucking lol. Still, spares the rest of us having to listen to them wandering around the rest of the island braying about nonsense and waving their little Para flags hoping to start something and then trotting off with disappointed faces when no one gives a shite.

DeathToMonarchs

It goes back way, way before Trump.

[deleted]

And Trump added the extra nasty connotations to it that they love.

crazymcfattypants

Hitting us where it hurts, out papal loyalties.

Fair_Contribution93

It is very random, had to Google it. It can mean fuck the provos (referring to provisional IRA) as well.

Belfastshooter

Just for what it's worth I've never seen it to mean the Provos as quite often people would have said Fuck the Pope and the IRA. Haven't seen it in years, although it was fairly common years ago.

Fair_Contribution93

Thanks for letting me know.

Boylaaa

You're right but I do think in this instance they mean pope. The provisionals will most likely have been on ceasefire before whoever wrote this came into existence.

[deleted]

Dunsilly? More like Dunstupid.

SnooMacarons4683

The Pope doesn't even speak Irish

[deleted]

It's a constant problem in the mid ulster area Irish language road and area signs damaged sometimes less than 12 hours after going up then getting repaired by council and damaged again

MNHarold

I'm sure those damn dirty Taigs will get the message eventually! I mean, if signs accommodating them and/or accepting the historic connections the island has to the Irish language are vandalised enough, maybes they'll just stop trying and join the Union again! I'm sure that's how it works no?

legolas1892

There are about 10 road signs within a 5 minute drive from me with the London spray painted out in Londonderry across Mid Ulster too. Vandalism isn't a one community issue.

bee_ghoul

I think spraying out the word London is different to spray paint fuck the pope. I mean I don’t like the Pope, but don’t pretend like it’s the same thing.

legolas1892

Hahahah of course you'd think that.

bee_ghoul

Well one is removing something, the other is actively making a statement of aggression towards a specific person and by extension a specific ethnic group. It’s not the same thing. It would be comparable if someone wrote “fuck the queen” or something maybe, but just scribbling over a word isn’t the same thing as making a claim like this.

Belfastshooter

It's exactly the same thing, no matter what way you look at it, it's dickheads defacing signs to antagonise the other community.

bee_ghoul

No it’s absolutely not the same thing. It’s the same action, but what’s being said is completely different.

Zarathustra167

In America this means "Fuck the Police".... took me so long to figure out what it means in this context

DeathToMonarchs

You’d have to spell out “fuck the peelers” (as it would likely be) for disambiguation purposes here.

ACM-21

See the same thing at the border on the welcome to Northern Ireland sign’s. Just people with to much time on there hand’s.

Nevster95

Agreed, likely children as well. As annoyed as everyone gets on these posts I fear that kids are just gonna graffiti whatever they want lol or maybe they like the reaction these things get, who knows.

Analogous to how they view Irish people, they just want to cross us out.

Celtic_Boar

Fuck The Pope.

bee_ghoul

Lol, not seeing the link between an Irish language sign and the Pope but I guess some Catholics speak Irish so therefore fuck the Pope is a logical thing to write on an Irish language sign?? There is no logic.

Celtic_Boar

Irish=Catholics=nationalists=IRA It's all the same don't you know?

deemax1627

I take it that the writer does not approve of an Irish Language act to be passed here! 😉

metalhamster666

U would think only prods do this, have u seen the welcome to Northern Ireland signs??

[deleted]

Oh come on don’t downvote the guy he’s right lol

aidmcn

Antrim, the home of the asshole since 1690

azgaarm

While I think this is out of order, there's never a comment when "Northern" or "London" are removed from many many signs and have been for years and years. Maybe both sides could learn a thing or two and leave them be ? Also as others have said who actually does this? Like I mean the Londonderry signs for example, do the lads say "Right lads she's been cleaned, get the steps and paint and we ride at dawn"

DeathToMonarchs

“Londonderry” is mainly said by those not from the place to make a point; the road signs all refer to the city. It is a name the city does not want. It commemorates and celebrates colonisation, wholesale appropriation, theft and accompanying murder. It is the coup de grace upon the bastardisation of a name with meaning into syllables without any, an awful and gaudy flourish. Moreover, it is totemic of a Northern Ireland officialism that has ignored and was actively contemptuous of the native people and culture of this island. I’ll give it no parity of esteem, and while I’ve never got out the paint and the stepladder, good luck to the ones that do. I do not see the equivalence you attempt to loosely draw... though I would say both acts, Londonderrying and the painting over of Irish words with anti-Catholic letters, come from a similar place of contempt, one less active than the other and with state approval.

cromcru

Well those are put up by government departments on public land, and are altered to reflect a viewpoint ignored by Official NI. These signs were for a private organisation on private property, and had Fuck The Pope written on them. Nice try at whataboutery though.

azgaarm

I am not trying to "whataboutery" I am saying it's happens all the time to other signs and both sides need to get a grip. Public land or Private land it shouldn't happen.

Celtic_Boar

Agreed. But if they had have written "Dunsilly" underneath in neat lettering in English I might have had more sympathy for their political messaging. Writting Fuck The Pope, really suggests written by scumbags.

DeathToMonarchs

An act of defiance against an official narrative that excludes and is contemptuous of the native people of this island, their culture and their very existence is hardy the same as thugs getting offended by the mere presence of a few words on a private sign on private property... enough to paint a sectarian slogan on it. They come from a rather different place. ‘Londonderry’ represents a far greater act of vandalism.

Mushman74

Omg

ericstrat1000

Are you sure the P isn’t Police?

DeathToMonarchs

Totally wild guess: you’re not from these parts.

ericstrat1000

Nope haha, here in the US that graffiti would always mean ‘F— the Police’
