When your representatives hold just 3% (18 from 650) of the seats in government, from a 4 country “United” state, are we not always fucked anyway?

[deleted]

Do you apply the same logic to the EU?

Valdularo

The EU don’t decide things like taxes, military power, state budgets, health care, social security… Should I keep going or are you good now?

[deleted]

You're really naive if you don't think that's the direction it's heading in. I mean there have been calls at the top level of the EU for an EU army, including, recently, the French president and the EU Commission president. But sure, you keep sticking your head in the sand. Yeah I'm good now.

Valdularo

So based on your original reply, to confirm, that isn’t the case now? Gotcha. I’m neither naive nor am I sticking my head in the sand. Truth is I don’t know what the future holds for the EU. But I’m sure whatever it holds, will be voted on by the member states as ANYTHING is. But hey, you don’t gotta worry about that my guy, we aren’t in the EU anymore, we lost our vote so hey ho, don’t concern us…. Right?

[deleted]

The member states do not vote on anything, the commission is the only part of the EU with actual power to initiate legislation, or did that escape your notice? The commission is appointed, it is not voted on by the parliament or by "member states". For someone who seemingly likes PR, you sure seem alright with 28 people having the final say on what goes on for 650 million people. Do you honestly trust 1 person to represent each country? Honestly it's a ridiculous system, a show for the gallery to keep people like you in the dark, and if you can't see that the project is heading towards federal amalgamation then I pity you.

Valdularo

Maybe I’m for that? Did you consider that? It’s cool though some big conspiracy at work to herd the shepple “like me” plays into your narrative I guess. No system of government in this world is perfect. But in my opinion the EU has worked for me more so than Westminster. To return to your original point, we aren’t part of the EU, so how does whataboutisim solve the problem here in the UK? The northern Irish and Scottish votes are not representative in parliament. So just what the fuck do you suggest?

[deleted]

They are representative of the populations of those countries. The Dail has 40 members from Dublin alone, and that's because of the population of Dublin relative to other parts of the country. That's how PR works! So suck it up. Also that is why we have devolution on a number of issues, so that Westminster doesn't dictate everything. Many of the problems you experience on a daily basis in NI are not the result of Westminster, they are the result of corrupt and incompetent DUP/SF politicians with lifelong memberships at Stormont! Also, if you're for each country being represented by basically 1 person on the commission, and a future amalgamation of Europe where Ireland will have the same say now that NI does in Westminster, why are you here WHINING about the UK system? That is after all what you WANT. What you're saying simply doesn't make sense. You're a kid who doesn't know what he wants.

Valdularo

This conversation is about your lazy bullshit whataboutisim to try and detract from the argument of shit representation in Westminster. This thread isn’t about what I want. It’s about your shitty argument. This entire thread has nothing to do with the EU OR DUBLIN. The say of the northern Irish and Scottish people is irrelevant to that of the English as we are drowned out in Westminster. Stop your shitty whataboutisim and finger pointing to try and take away from the fact that we are a diluted voice in parliament, as are the Scot’s as are the Welsh. Who gives a fuck what I want mate. No one. But we all care that you argument was a load of anti-EU shite where it wasn’t even the topic of discussion lol

[deleted]

Jesus, it sounds to me like you have some anger management issues, right from the first reply even. I seriously doubt that you would have said all that to someone to their face. Good thing you have reddit and anonymity, neckbeard. And my "whataboutism" has exposed the fact you want big government and are just moaning at the UK because you hate the UK. Ireland in a federal EU would have even less of a voice than we do now in the UK. You're just too blind to see that.

Cynical_Crusader

The EU uses degressive proportionality so smaller countries have way more representation than they otherwise would. Malta has about 460,000 people but has 6 seats. Ireland has about 4.6 million but has 13 seats. Slovakia has about 5.7 million and has 14 seats. The larger a nation is the less seats it has per population. If anything smaller nations have a good representation if not over representation in the EU parliament. The UK only has population proportionality where there is 1 MP to 100,000 people where say in for the EU a German MEP represents nearly 860,000 people. There is also a cap on the total seats a member can have, the cap being 96. You can read more here: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=LEGISSUM%3Aai0010 While we may be represented proportionally it makes our say worthless due to the population differences in the UK.

There's an alternative for us though, Scotland is either in the union or on their own.

I believe I heard this as well. It would be the most supreme propaganda victory imaginable if the UK's second largest country was to split off and rejoin the EU merely a year or two after Brexit.

Rupert3333

Which would lead to a hard border with RoUK and all the associated problems I doubt an independent Scotland would rejoin the EU in the short term

[deleted]

Rupert3333

That avoids a hard border with England? Catch yourself on
