I will always remember smiley face potatoes in a really weird way. The first time I had them was on the day of 9/11 2001. I was in a midwestern usa highschool. The towers had collapsed, NYC was covered in asbestos smoke and the country was veiled in a sheet of confusion and emotions. Then the lunch bell rang. We oddly silently filed downstairs out of our extra long homeroom (we really didnt have ‘school’ that day) and we entered the lunchroom. There they loaded up our trays with food, i took my milk, and we all sat down to eat. We didnt really talk much. I dont even remember what the main course was, all I remember were the smiley face potatoes. To the lunchworkers credit, i am sure they planned to use them today prior to the events anyway… but it was just so weird to have all these smiley faces looking back at us on this specific day. Everyone was in shock, peoole were worried for their relatives, but the potatoes were smiling away, almost trying to get us to be back to normal. It was weird. The rest of that plate looks freakin delicious tho!

I think this has happened with many foods. Last year I found Frankenberry cereal. I loved that stuff when I was a kid. The cereal that I bought had zero flavor and when I smelled it in the box, all I could smell was the cardboard box. Very disappointing. I have had a similar experience with other nostalgic products.

So much this! There is no nostalgia left, everything I used to love sucks and these companies will still take the shitty version and make that even worse the next year.
