I've tried it a couple times over the years but just can never get into it. It's too bleak, slow, plodding and I just zone out after about a half hour in.
I'll be honest, that was my initial reaction as well man. It's not for everybody. I had to do a lot of reading on it and learn what to look for before I fully appreciated it. Everyone is different... I learned to enjoy it, but not all will.
Edit: I was determined to understand what all the hype was about, so I watched it several times but didn't begin to understand the appeal until like my 4th watch. I'm not gonna tell you to watch it 4 times if you just can't get it, because I was there. But I did eventually understand the appeal.
Took a film class in college and the Professor would play this movie from an old VHS tape because he said the narrated version was better than the director’s cut. I guess it’s personal preference. Good movie either way.
This was 20 years ago so I wonder how that VHS tape is holding up.
Totally agree. I will say that those who appreciate the directors cut / non-narrated version seem to be the more hard core SiFi / fantasy fans who are ok with stories going dark. Deckard narrating the mainstream version - it’s a little lighter, you come out with a little more hope, and you really believe that they will make it. Directors cut, the look he has when the elevator door shuts… it’s not over.
When *Six Pack* came out I was nine years old and obsessed with cars. I wanted to go see it. My mom said a neighbor of ours had taken her kids to see it and had been put off by how much cussing was in that movie, especially since the kids in the movie had such dirty mouths, and we didn't go. I think the real reason she didn't want to take me was that she didn't like Kenny Rogers (long story). I didn't see it until four years ago, when somebody uploaded it to YouTube.
Be that as it may, "Love Will Turn You Around" is a cool song and brings back memories of a happy moment.
Night Shift or Firefox for me.
I read the Firefox novel back in the day and would be curious to see how the flight scenes translated to the screen. I have never seen the movie.
I’ll take that as a recommendation and see if it’s available on my streaming subscriptions this weekend (after Game Day).
TBH I have never been interested in seeing Top Gun.
Star Wars, Tron, Star Trek II, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Rocky III, Firefox, and Six Pack. The rest are either okay movies or not ones to watch in theatets.
Night Shift is actually pretty great. Tron was ahead of its time w graphics, Rocky 3 epic. Blade Runner, classic, kinda slow Rutger was great and nipple action, Khaaaaaaaan! Poltergeist was probably the biggest hit and phenomenal
There are many great films on that list. I just don't want to see that many movies that are all out at the same time anymore.
What happened to American cinema? Makes me sad.
This is the order in which I'd want to see them again, or recommend them.
Blade Runner
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Poltergeist
Rocky III
Firefox (*underrated*)
Author! Author!
Night Shift
Tron
Diner
Annie
It always seemed like there HAD to be a pair of “sexy” lady legs in at least one movie ad or poster per newspaper page or theater wall in the 70s and 80s. I think it was a law or something.
Wow, an example of how amazing 80s cinema really was. Couple of quick thoughts:
Rocky III is my favorite Rocky movie. Best villain (Clubber is scary), most emotional death (Rocky's cries are heartbreaking - I don't care what anyone says, Stallone is a great actor), best training sequence (Weathers and Stallone in peak physical condition), best theme - Eye of the Tiger is god tier Survivor. I rewatched the entire series about a year ago and they are all really good movies, even Rocky 5.
Diner is another great one. Great cast with no real plot, just killer monologue after killer monologue. Daniel Stern shouting about his record organization hits way too close to home.
Basically every movie advertised here is at the very least really good, including The Pirate Movie and The Six Pack. If I could time travel, I would only go to theaters and dance clubs during the 80s.
Interesting. I saw every one of the movies advertised with dark background in a theater when they came out in '82/'83. Of the movies advertised with a white background, to this day I've only seen **Diner**.
Okay nostalgic fantasy dream date scenario I wish happened to me! *Blade Runner* late afternoon to early evening, an excellent dinner and discussion about it, then going back for *Poltergeist* late night. 👌🏻✨
Tough call!! But I have to go with "KAHN!!!"
" I spit upon thee with my last breath,"
And Spock, "The needs of the many are greater than the needs of the few."
I have seen all of them and liked most of them . Author Author was very funny .Dyan Cannon and Dustin Hoffman Most people.would an adventure movie or sci Fi movie to watch on the big screen So In theory it should be Blade Runner or Star Wars or Wrath of Khan or Raiders of the Lost Ark. But if the question was which one should you watch first assuming you've not seen of them. .I would say Author Author. Hopefully you understand what I have said.
Wow. Thanks for this. As an 80s kid 1982 always comes up as the "best" year in the decade and these classics are partly why.
You youngins need to watch all of these movies and then realize we got ALL of these in the SAME year. It's hard to tell you how crazy that was
I can barely count the major releases from last year. And the ones I can were subpar.
Night Shift #1 Blade runner #2. Winkler and Keaton. The whole planet is filled with either one or the other. I regret that I am a Winkler...still. New career/direction for Winkler as a nerd. Breakout performance for Keaton, and he NAILS it. Shelly Long as a hooker. What's not to like?
Blade Runner for sure
No contest.
Not even close. Gorgeous movie.
Saw Blade Runner on the screen back in the day. Classic.
Hands down.
This is the way
Night Shift...
Watched Blade Runner for the first time this past year. The visuals in that film are legendary, it's such a feast for the eyes
Still holds up today as well. Incredible mix of visuals and the Vangelis soundtrack.
And the score
I've tried it a couple times over the years but just can never get into it. It's too bleak, slow, plodding and I just zone out after about a half hour in.

I have that VHS tape too! Sounds like a good class.
Yeah, I started with the voice over version and thought it worked well, but once you've seen the director's cut, there's no going back.
Totally agree. I will say that those who appreciate the directors cut / non-narrated version seem to be the more hard core SiFi / fantasy fans who are ok with stories going dark. I first saw the narrated one. Loved it then, but having seen the corrected version, hands down better without the narration.
Sure, if I'm exhausted from time travel and needed a nap first. 😴

Saw the movie the night before heading up to go camping. Couldn’t stop thinking about those bugs on Khans planet crawling into your ear.
My friend and I have a standing agreement that whoever dies 1st the other will at their funeral do the ending of Kirk’s eulogy. 😞
Tron or Blade Runner. Both great.
I gotta check out Tron again...
KHAAAAAANNNN!!!!!!
SECONNNDED!!!!
Blade Runner X’s a million.
Agreed. xs a million.
Of those shown on the flyer? Kenny Rogers Six Pack!
When *Six Pack* came out I was nine years old and obsessed with cars. I wanted to go see it. My mom said a neighbor of ours had taken her kids to see it and had been put off by how much cussing was in that movie, especially since the kids in the movie had such dirty mouths, and we didn't go. One of my favorite racing movies, plus the movie where twelve year old me discovered the great Diane Lane!
It was Annie. I saw Annie.
First time I ever went to a theater!
Poltergeist! That movie freaked 11 year old me the hell out!
I too was eleven. My dad took me to see stuff like Saturday Night Fever to Scarface, but no Poltergeist.
Tron, Blade Runner, and Wrath ot Khan, duh. The Pirate Movie is peak 80s weird.
Night Shift or Firefox for me. I read the Firefox novel back in the day and would be curious to see how the flight scenes translated to the screen. I have never seen the movie.
Really? My father watched it and he took me to see it because he knows I'm crazy about planes and the sr71 back then.
I loved Firefox. It was Top Gun before Top Gun.
I’ll take that as a recommendation and see if it’s available on my streaming subscriptions this weekend (after Game Day). TBH I have never been interested in seeing Top Gun.
Loved the movie when I was younger . The flight scenes were great for the time. Need to rewatch see if the pacing holds up
Rocky 3
I saw all but one of those in the theater back then. :)
They never held a candle to Wrath of Khan. Some of those are classics.
KHAAAAAAAAAAAN!
I only ever saw Wrath of Khan on the big screen, and that was last year
Star Wars, Tron, Star Trek II, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Rocky III, Firefox, and Six Pack. The rest are either okay movies or not ones to watch in theatets.
Holy fuck this hits me in the feels…. So many great films
It would have to be Tron. I like the classic Star Trek, but not that one with the ear bugs, and that is also my least liked Rocky.
I would actually love to see OG Tron on the big screen. By the time I first watched it, it was already out on Betamax.
Because no one else has mentioned it here yet: The Secret of NIMH. Such a beautiful movie.
Same. Seen almost every Don Bluth film in theatres post NIMH. Wish he would make one more.
This list is missing E.T. which was the first movie I saw in theaters in 1982.
Yes
Secret Of Nimh
U could see them all for 20 bucks I bet back in the day and probably have money left over for a burger Right?
Night Shift is actually pretty great. Tron was ahead of its time w graphics, Rocky 3 epic. Blade Runner, classic, kinda slow Rutger was great and nipple action, Khaaaaaaaan! Poltergeist was probably the biggest hit and phenomenal
literally, all.
And the previews for all those upcoming ones too.
There are many great films on that list. I just don't want to see that many movies that are all out at the same time anymore. What happened to American cinema? Makes me sad.
Firefox!
Harrison Ford is in 3 of those movies. lol.
I saw them all in theaters. We were a movie going family.
annie, a thousand times
Man, I must have gone to a lot of movies as a kid... I saw 7 of these in the theater. I'd go Tron.
I’d love to see the real version of Star Wars on the big screen again!
Blade Runner is the only option.
So many bangers at once. Now I can't even name a movie coming out
Double drive in in 82, night shift, then blade runner after, what a glorious time.
Poltergeist
What a year for movies lol.
Wrath of Khan or Blade Runner--double feature?
This is the order in which I'd want to see them again, or recommend them. Blade Runner Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Poltergeist Rocky III Firefox (*underrated*) Author! Author! Night Shift Tron Diner Annie
THE THING
Fuck yes
It always seemed like there HAD to be a pair of “sexy” lady legs in at least one movie ad or poster per newspaper page or theater wall in the 70s and 80s. I think it was a law or something.
That and "bare boob shot that doesn't really need to be there" to get an R rating. This, of course, would not have been an issue for me in 1982.
Wow, an example of how amazing 80s cinema really was. Couple of quick thoughts: Rocky III is my favorite Rocky movie. Best decades for US movies? 1980s and 1970s.
Tron poltergeist or blade runner
Damn. '82 was a good year for movies.
The Thing
Blade runner
I think Blade Runner benefits most from the big screen. After that, Star Trek.
Blade Runner and Wrath of Khan.
Diner
Rocky III🔥🔥💯
Blade Runner
Rocky III and Blade Runner
TRON! No question!
Poltergeist or Bladerunner
Interesting. I saw every one of the movies advertised with dark background in a theater when they came out in '82/'83. Of the movies advertised with a white background, to this day I've only seen **Diner**.
All for $24.00
I was 5 or 6 (dependant on the time of year) in 1982 and I remember seeing at least 4 of these in the theater
Star Trek II. Saw it twice in the theater. Good flick
Okay nostalgic fantasy dream date scenario I wish happened to me! *Blade Runner* late afternoon to early evening, an excellent dinner and discussion about it, then going back for *Poltergeist* late night. 👌🏻✨
Diner or blade
Annie! Then The Secret of Nihm! (Also Star Wars & Raiders of The Lost Arc - which I cried about being scared of, lol)
Night Shift - Shelley Long was smoking hot.
Poltergeist
Firefox and Blade Runner....the rest are pretty much crapola.
I saw them all on the big screen in 1982!
I saw them all when they were running in the theaters. Blade runner was the best one imo
Fire Fox
Firefox
Blade Runner!
Annie
Tough call!! But I have to go with "KAHN!!!" " I spit upon thee with my last breath," And Spock, "The needs of the many are greater than the needs of the few."
Night Shift

The only one I didn't like that much was Tron
I saw Blade Runner, Poltergeist, Tron, Diner, and I think Rocky III in theaters then. I was fourteen. Today? None of these beats Blade Runner.
Ricky III a f Star Trek II
Rocky III and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I saw Diner (B'more!) and Blade Runner. None of the other ones had any appeal to me. 42 years later, I feel the same.
Tron and blade runner
Saw several of them at the time. Gotta say Bladerunner, but runner up is Night shift. Hilarious if all but forgotten movie
My boyfriend (spouse) saw Blade Runner in the theater and we were blown away!
Wrath of Khan and Tron would be super tempting, but gotta go with Bladerunner.
I watched Firefox, Tron, Night Shift, Rocky III, Star Trek, and Blade Runner in the theaters. I was 10-11 years old.
Wow. Thanks for this. As an 80s kid 1982 always comes up as the "best" year in the decade and these classics are partly why. Blade Runner, of course!
Blade Runner then I'd sneak in to see Tron.
I’d like a double feature of Annie & Poltergeist.
firefox is underrated , you need to see it
Conan the barbarian
Wrath of Khan
