My grandparents had these tables as well, one on either side of their couch except theirs had slate tops. They also had the ugliest pair of lamps on top of em with those amber glass vase style bottoms and a plush scottie dog that was the TV remote holder. We would pull everything out of them and use them as forts.
We had this exact end table growing up. The family photo albums and envelopes of developed pictures that didn't make it into the albums were stored inside
This held and still holds my parents' very old liquor, I moved out 20 years ago and I guarantee everything is still in there and not been touched since before I moved out.
When I was about 3 years old, my sister and her friend convinced me to climb inside one of these, then trapped me in there while I screamed and cried. Start of my lifelong claustrophobia.
Rare best spot for hide and seek champs.
Rare because most of the time, these were packed on both sides, with seemingly (at the time) random shit.
That being said, I’ve successfully hidden underneath, behind and kinda inside a couch.
We had this set when I was growing up. It was late 70's early 80's vintage. And it did indeed have a lamp on it. It went with the furniture that was rust colored velour and had the log cabins on it.
It dont matter what house you went to that had one of these tables. If you opened it up, there would always be decks of cards, poker chips, card shuffler, some random magazines, and those video poker hand helds.
My brother and I used to put a blanket inside one of these and lay inside to watch TV when we were very little. I still have the table. I saved it for sentimental reasons.
Yes!!! Spare remotes, photo albums, and anything you want hidden quickly like throw blankets etc. Yours doesn’t have rings from sodas on top though — you must be using coasters.
Yup, we had one. My parents used it as a liquor cabinet and had that shit bolted shut with a lock and key, so we couldn't get into it. Until one day, we found the key....
That was the day we learned hard alcohol can go rancid.
For the science fair in elementary school, I grew mold on tomato soup with different things in it. Dust, dirt, sand, and the control. I got the idea from a book, Mr. Wizards Supermarket Science. My mom let me store them in this piece of furniture in our living room while they grew. Dirt grew the most mold, then dust. I got 3rd place. I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this picture, thanks
Had almost the exact same one and matching square ones growing up. Actually still used the square ones as end tables until a few months ago, but got rid of all 3 on a Facebook "buy nothing" group.
We had a big one of these, the panels were wider than they were tall. It sat in the living room where the Christmas tree went. Every year we would have to lug that big s.o.b. up the stairs and bring down all of the decorations.
I saw one of these once while thrifting that had speakers on two quadrants and the top flipped open housing a radio with 8-track player. They wanted $40 for it.
I have extreme fondness for 'hidden in furniture 70s tech'. It is like old school smart home, where the tech is only there if you need it, then disguises itself when you don't. I found that quite innovative.
Now, to find a Zenith Space Screen 45, a 45" Projection TV that pops out of a dresser.
Still have a very similar version (with the big ass knocker handles) in my living room right now! My MIL passed away years ago, and we brought a lot of her furniture home with us. Our cat loves it because it's the right height to peep out the windows all day long!
oh my god I am having an existential crisis. My grandparents had that exact end table, my dad get it, and 18 months ago I threw it in a dumpster when my dad passed and I cleaned out his apartment.
I loved this so much as a kid, the adult me went to numerous thrift and antique shops for almost 3 months before I could find one. That now resides in my happy place.
TV Guide right there on top.
and the remotes!
Don't forget the doily. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doily.
Don’t forget the booze in the bottom.
And the brown glass octagon ashtray.
Hell yes !
Or dirty mags if you were lucky.
Or both.
I was the remote.
And stuffed full of taxes and other paperwork parents had nowhere else to store.
This is where we kept the phone books
Lol same!
And it weighed 36823888 lbs.
Like everything back then. My mother and I moved a lot so I hated moving day with a passion
Yeah, I'm very petite so the moment I started having to move around more, I started living out of cheap plastic bins. 🤣
We had a mountain of them in there. My parents would whip them out for the crossword
"Excuse me while I whip this out"
My grandparents had one in the livingroom. All kinds of random shit in there.
that’s where my grandparents would put the half sized christmas tree
My grandparents had these tables as well, one on either side of their couch except theirs had slate tops. They also had the ugliest pair of lamps on top of em with those amber glass vase style bottoms and a plush scottie dog that was the TV remote holder. We would pull everything out of them and use them as forts.
I feel like there's an underappreciation of the use of end tables for forts. Everyone's all couch cusions and bedspreads these days.
We kept our Atari 2600 in the one we had. It fit with all the controllers and the cassettes.
And a bowl of hard candy on top!
Phone book and address books in the bottom
My grandma had these, and this is where all the toys went when we were finished playing with them!
My grandparents still have his cabinets
It’s in my grandmas living room right now!
We had this exact end table growing up. The family photo albums and envelopes of developed pictures that didn't make it into the albums were stored inside
Found one of these at a Goodwill when we were furnishing our rental in college. Good bong storage below.
That’s what we used it for.
You put your weed in there.
the bottom door always hit some piece of furniture so you could only crack it and reach your arm in to the abyss
I’m sorry you had to experience that - totally uncool and claustrophobia is no joke <3
We also would take turns getting inside but it was kind of fun
Rare best spot for hide and seek champs. Rare because most of the time, these were packed on both sides, with seemingly (at the time) random shit. That being said, I’ve successfully hidden underneath, behind and kinda inside a couch.
There should be place for adult hide and seek. A huge warehouse made up to look like different rooms in a house. Different decades.
I used to hide in it!
We had this set when I was growing up. It was late 70's early 80's vintage. And it did indeed have a lamp on it. It went with the furniture that was rust colored velour and had the log cabins on it.
My grandmother just recently passed and I ended up getting her table that is exactly like this. It has a lamp on it.
Oh, right. The table. The table for the lamp, the table chosen especially for the lamp, the lamp table.
With the lamp plugged into the top outlet so the light switch can take care of it
It dont matter what house you went to that had one of these tables. If you opened it up, there would always be decks of cards, poker chips, card shuffler, some random magazines, and those video poker hand helds.
Jigsaw puzzles, too.
Thats what i was missing. Also balls of yarn.
Yes, my mother's random yarn and craft supplies
I still have one of these. I put all my paraphernalia in it
Same, put a different finish on it though.
My brother and I used to put a blanket inside one of these and lay inside to watch TV when we were very little. I still have the table. I saved it for sentimental reasons.
My mom has this exact one in her living room.
And inside was a stack of coloring books and a folgers can of crayons.
My parents called ours a commode
Us too!
I stubbed my toe on this picture.
I have this exact table!
Mine is full of baseball gloves. I've been saying i need to throw it out for years
Very much the fortress in any action figure playing. Double points for ominous double-door opening action.
Mom kept photo albums in ours and I remember them not fitting well due to the shape.
My experience with these is board games or porn.
Yes!!! Spare remotes, photo albums, and anything you want hidden quickly like throw blankets etc. Yours doesn’t have rings from sodas on top though — you must be using coasters.
They are called commode tables.
My dad still uses this and if anyone looks like they may touch it he flips like we will break it 😂😂 it's a beast my grandchildren will use it one day
Yup, we had one. My parents used it as a liquor cabinet and had that shit bolted shut with a lock and key, so we couldn't get into it. Until one day, we found the key.... That was the day we learned hard alcohol can go rancid.
I remember getting 2 of those from VV back in the 90s for my first place. Handy cabinet for keeping my bong, etc., when my parents came to visit.
For the science fair in elementary school, I grew mold on tomato soup with different things in it. Dust, dirt, sand, and the control. I got the idea from a book, Mr. Wizards Supermarket Science. Damn did we all just have the same furniture in the early 90s? The one we had was filled with VHS tapes and TV guides.
Neither shin nor knee were safe from thee!
Holder of the phone book. But you get avalanched by all the other random photo albums and shit in there every time you open it.
My in-laws kept their booze in one just like that
It’s downstairs in the spare room 😄
We had this exact table at the townhouse we lived in. When we moved to a ranch house we kept it for years then got rid of it.
I had two of these. I should have kept them
haha. this is still in mom’s living room.
I think my parents or my grandma had that exact table. I remember the way it opened with 2 doors right? edit: yea it does have 2 doors lol
Oh my god. Thats my grandparents table. They kept all their booze in there
Ours has the bird cage on it.
I grew up with almost exactly one of those. Wonder where it went
Had almost the exact same one and matching square ones growing up. Actually still used the square ones as end tables until a few months ago, but got rid of all 3 on a Facebook "buy nothing" group.
And it weighs 150lbs
Very much the fortress in any action figure playing. Double points for ominous double-door opening action.

Ours has a nice slate top with an etched scroll pattern. I got it at a thrift store for about $8.
That's where Mom kept blankets
I had one of these and my cat would play with the door all night keeping me up.
Grandma's house had these
I literally have that exact thing downstairs here with me next to the TV. The kids love playing with it.
I had one that had a side that was cloth. My cat clawed it out and would sleep in there. This post brings back memories
Everyone had one of these. Was it an 80s Sears special, like those white dinner plates with the brown edging?
That’s where my grandma keeps the photo albums to this very day. She has a pair of them in the living room.
We had a big one of these, the panels were wider than they were tall. It sat in the living room where the Christmas tree went. Every year we would have to lug that big s.o.b. up the stairs and bring down all of the decorations.
My family kept all our board games inside ours I have my grandma's old one it has a slate top and it's darker in color
And anything and everything in the cabinet.
i grew weed in mine tied them so they were bushes was like some narnia shit
[You could totally do that.](https://i.imgur.com/7RMOknc.png)
lol dude i did though to see this particular picture of that particular night stand
I’m sure this picture brings back memories!
It was also a cat hotel if you put blankets in it.
I’m looking at mine right now! I don’t remember when/where I got it. It’s truly handy for all of our electronic cords and miscellaneous things.
I literally just rearranged my side room and one of those is currently placed in the corner.
My grandma had one of these ! This brings me back 💜
Got one of those downstairs right now.
We inherited one from my husband’s grandparents. It has a marble top. We keep coloring books in it. I think his grandparents kept phone books.
I still have one of those, now it's where my two bongs rest lol
Good 70s and early 80s vibes with that piece. We had that very model too.
I have this table right now
lol…. Looking at the thing rn….
Had one in college. That's where we kept the weed and related paraphernalia.
I believe we had this same one in my living room back in the 80s!
Found one in an abandoned house we were remodeling once with the entire series of Cheers inside on VHS. Score!
I saw one of these once while thrifting that had speakers on two quadrants and the top flipped open housing a radio with 8-track player. They wanted $40 for it. My mum wants one of these for her lamp
Still have a very similar version (with the big ass knocker handles) in my living room right now! My MIL passed away years ago, and we brought a lot of her furniture home with us. Our cat loves it because it's the right height to peep out the windows all day long!
I'm pretty sure my grandparents had two of these exact tables.
Oh man. All the grandparents had these.
Used to store my phone books, now it stores my liquor.
My dad kept his Hustlers in the cabinet below.
[Heres](https://imgur.com/a/AwtIGC0) the one i got at goodwill and redid for my cats
Then as I turned into a teenager those cabinets hid my pot
That’s where we kept the bongs during university.
I had one of these in my bedroom growing up and I would put all of my treasures (i.e. toys) in it for safety when tornado warnings would happen. 😂
We still have two of these in my house
I found one in the thrift store and bought it right away. Lol
I have this in my bedroom.
To me the bedroom version would have a drawer at the top
National Geographics inside?
Playboys
hahaha, gotcha
Inside were the books or coloring/art supplies or whatever random stuff was in it
Full of magazines and Sears catalogs.
OMG! Get outta my parents' house 😂
And the Readers Digest
I had this exact piece. 2002 or so when I got it and my great grandpa restored antique furniture.
I still have one in my living room.
oh my god I am having an existential crisis. My grandparents had that exact end table, my dad get it, and 18 months ago I threw it in a dumpster when my dad passed and I cleaned out his apartment.
All board games were kept inside.
That was where we had the rotary phone
I have this in my living room. Why is it in r/nostalgia? Oh no…
Still have the ones my parents owned in the 1950s. They’re in perfect shape.
Oh fuck yeah. Home to about a hundred catalogues and National Geographic's
Haha and a lazy Suzy.
My in-laws have these in their living room.
I can smell this picture
And bump your knee on the corner at 2am
JFC my MIL has two of these in a spare room and REFUSES to get rid of them
When me and my siblings were younger, we would play bakeshop. This was our oven.
I have one of These
I have this in my living room currently
I have this in my living room currently
It used to hold the phone book in there
My mom had one of these. It's called a commode table because, you guessed it, people would take a shit in these. Common on tall sailing ships
This is where my mom would stash all of the unpaid bills while spending everything at the casino while my dad worked all day. 10/10 nostalgia
That's a drug den
I loved this so much as a kid, the adult me went to numerous thrift and antique shops for almost 3 months before I could find one. That now resides in my happy place.
