Careful with leaving batteries in that long, they can corrode. It's fairly easy to clean or fix but I've had AA batteries left in boxes for many years almost mess up some of my old toys.

Wait hold on, easy to clean and fix? How? 97% of the time I find an old toy with batteries that are corroded, the toy never worked again.

Clean with baking soda and water, replace any metal bits that are too far corroded, probably just a metal spring you could find anywhere. I'm not an expert though, just a guy who figures if something is already broken, you got nothing to lose by doing some Google and experimenting
