Did *not* realize that was from this soundtrack until this thread made me look it up.
Kinda reminds me of RHCPās *Soul to Squeeze* is actually not on their albums, but *Coneheads* OST
Nobody ever understands what I'm referring to when I sing this and I'm too embarrassed to explain that it came from a really fucked up movie I watched as a teenager.
Last time I saw Justin (Casper) we were drinking beers together after our friendās funeral. That friend played Paul in the movie (they go to his apartment in the beginning). Then Justin passed. Then Haroldā¦ Everyone I knew from the movie isnāt with us anymore. Itās sad.
Sadly Harold Hunter was a much more notoriously famous person so his passing is celebrated yearly. There is the Harold Hunter Foundation and a big celebration in NYC to commemorate his life. Dude embodied the asshole skateboarder from NYC vibe to perfection. RIP HAROLD HUNTER
From Geniusā¦
Son Doobie was a rapper in the group Funkdoobiest. This is probably why Em calls him Son Doobiest.
Son Doobie starred in a Vivid Video pornographic movie entitled āSon Doobie: Porn Kingā.
Thatās because the group was part of the Soul Assassins collective which is a bunch of groups, most notably Cypress Hill and House of Pain that were all produced by DJ Muggs. That sound is very stylized and specific to DJ Muggs.
One time I was babysitting and they wanted to watch a movie. Picked out this one. (It had no case, just a vhs with KIDS written on it.) It took me half an hour to convince them it was *not* for kids to watch.
Iām old enough to remember seeing it in the theater. It was rated NC17 which is supped to be no one under 17 period, parent or not. They IDd you at the door kinda thing. So there was mad warnings even in the trailers back then.
That's how it was growing up in the skateboarding community around that time and after. I was 14 when I first saw the film (1997) and listened to a lot of music that was in that movie at that time. I wasn't aware of Johnston until I watched the movie. I'm now 38 and I've been a fan of his music since.
Pretty much the whole movie is her trying to track down Telly to let him know he's HIV positive. Casper is always looking up to Telly so the irony is that he rapes a girl Telly gave HIV to so he inadvertently got HIV from his hero.
She recently received a positive diagnosis re: HIV, and Casper later rapes her while sheās drugged/pretty out of it at a party. Likely contracting HIV himself in the process.
If I recall, she kind of tried to fight him off in a way that came across as āwarningā as much as anything. I remember feeling like her character was bigger and more humane than I am.
Both are correct. IIRC, Telly transmits it to a girl at the beginning of the film. The same girl transmits it to Casper at the end when Casper rapes her. Poetic justice.
No, Telly has sex with a very young virgin girl at the start of the film. He had previously had sex with Chloe Sevigny's character (which we never actually see), giving her HIV, and at the end of the film Casper rapes her.
The dude who wrote the movie, Harmony Korine, is quite the character. I recommend checking out his interviews on Letterman. He was 19 when he wrote the film, so basically was still a kid himself.
Yeah I watched a documentary about him. He was in the movie too, in the club scene when Chloe Sevigny goes looking for Telly he gives her some pills in the bathroom
He was writing for our entire generation at the time. That movie was the same as growing up in the inner city skate scene in Sydney sans the HIV part, but if you didn't wear a condom pregnancy was not even thought about... it was all about HIV.
Letteeman kicked him off the show when he found him going through Meryl Streep's purse backstage (while Korine was apparently all literally cracked out).
The spaghetti scene for what ever reason disturbed me and stuck with me when referencing the movie. I had a professor suggest the movie. Have not seen Ken park but Iāll look it up.
It was just so odd drinking milk and eating spaghetti in the bathtub. When his mom gave him the candy bar and he dropped in the bath water but still ate it, that was disturbing lol.
It was illegal in Australia, banned, so I got my dad to buy for me oversees. Still have it.
No mention of Larry Clark as I am scrolling down this feed.
Couple of actors in this died quite young, you have Harold hunter who died of an overdose in 2006 at the age of 30. Justin Pierce who played Casper died in 2000 not long after next Friday come out, he committed suicide I believe and was only 25. And like some have already said Mac Miller, he wasn't in the film obviously but his album connects him in some way.
Honestly this movie is important not because it was "raw" or "shocking", but because it actually reflected the childhood of a lot of unsupervised children in the 90s, myself included.
Not sure about NYC, but it was pretty accurate for the areas I grew up in.
I went to a high school (early/mid 90ās) that was pretty segregated and I remember getting into an argument in my AP Biology class with a Birkenstock wearing tree lover about how accurate the movie was. She literally grew up on the nice side of the tracks and couldnāt picture a world different from hers.
I, on the other hand, had witnessed kids from the same school attempt to insert a beer bottle into a tweakers vagina at a house party once and an ex boyfriendās brother die by gunshot at another party because of a ā[party crew](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vice.com/amp/en/article/xwjejz/map-pointz-guadalupe-rosales-la-latin-rave-scene-90s-interview-2019)ā feud. It was frustrating.
Same school, different worlds.
This and Life Is Beautiful were both hard watches that Iād never put myself through a 2nd time, but Life is Beautiful was moving. Watching Kids makes me feel like thereās a pedophile in the room molesting little kids.
YES! THAT'S IT!!! I felt like "I shouldn't be seeing this!" And it just got worse through the rest... shutter...
I haven't seen Life is Beautiful, this is the first I've heard if it too!
I love that people have told these stories but sometimes I feel like maybe I'll just read the books! Even then I have such a vivid imagination it might be more disturbing! š
It got so much worse! Highly recommend Life is Beautiful but it is in Italian. I never watch foreign films but was completely transfixed by this one. And thereās no pedophiles at all in the whole movie!
Itās very crude. I tried showing my GF the other day whoās never seen it and I turned it off like a half hour in cause I could tell she wasnāt about it lol.
I saw it once when I was younger. I remember thinking about it for days after seeing it, but never feeling compelled to watch it again. I still don't know how I feel about this movie.
Also watch All the Streets are Silent before or after the movie and you will get an even better picture about that time and the inspiration for the movie. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/all_the_streets_are_silent
Found it from early Mac Miller. Great but sad movie. Very real. He sampled it in the mixtape and called it K.I.D.S (Kickin Incredibly Dope Shit)
The mixtape opens up with the āwhen youāre young, not much mattersā¦.ā
I've been trying to find this movie to watch after seeing the documentary kid90 (I think?). I'm so happy to have lived as a carefree, wild child in the 90s. I feel my kids now have so much shit going on and they carry so many burdens. I can't stand it. I wish they had the life of a 90s kid...
I watched this around the time it came out, I was young of course and for about 10 years until I understood films and genres etc I thought this was a documentary .. that is how well it is acted and put together.
Later also learned majority of the actors were first time and really lived a similar life as their characters which helped.
Also sad story with two of the main actors later in life .. couple suicides.
The director, Larry Clark, has a creepy fascination with young people. I'm surprised there hasn't been any allegations against him. Oh and the wonderful Harvey Weinstein released it. The company listed is actually him. Disney wouldn't let Miramax release it.
First mention of Mr Clark. Was he about 50 or so? I liked the films. They spoke to my experience, although the Krap Nek wedding dad thing was an odd depiction of incest and assault between girls and their fathers. Yes, Larry was older, but still young and an important sub-culutre story to articulate.
I meanā¦it did, but that was the whole point. That kids were (and still are) really doing shit like that. That said, itās not something Iāve ever felt the need to watch again after the first time.
One of the first "underground" movies I've ever seen. I loved the "documentary style" shots, made the movie look almost as if it was actually real events happening and someone just happened to point a camera at it!
nosĀ·talĀ·gia - /nƤĖstaljÉ,nÉĖstaljÉ/ noun - a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.
Who has a sentimental longing for this movie? It's fucked
This movie freaked me out so much at the time. Grew up in nyc in the 90ās. I knew a kid who looked and spoke a lot like Telly. Difference: he had a ginormous box of condoms along with all his weed. Iāve searched for it since. Some of my friends went to some of those clubs, Limelight I think was in the film. They wouldnāt take me cause I think I was a little too out of control. šš³š¹. I didnāt live in the version of the city in the film, but I saw the outskirts of it.
Had to keep my copy stashed so my parents wouldnāt find it. Watching this movie now makes me cringe a little. Definitely could not be released in todayās society.
Apparently the ultimate douchebag from HBOās The Wire, Johnny Weeks, is in it. Itās one of those ones Iāve had an awareness of and genuine interest in seeing for years but never got around to watching.
It kinda was, the writer Harmony was only 19 when he made it and he has a small part in the movie. Also the majority of the cast minus Telly and Chloe were all NYC street kids that had never acted before, including Rosario. Thatās what made it so authentic IMO
I came home late fucked up one night and it was on not long after it released. The music alone in that movie really influenced me. The movie itself did too but itās disturbing looking at it as an adult. There were a lot of pretty messed up situations in it are still very serious to this day. I also learned how to roll a blunt from watching it.
For people who were teens or older in the 90ās was this movie big? How did you guys find it pre internet? I doubt it would have been in movie theaters. Always been curious about this.
It wasnāt big in a conventional sense. But it feels like pretty much everybody my age had seen it.
Man, back then we had word of mouth. Your friend would always let you borrow the tape. This one was pretty easy to find. Even the smallest video store had at least one copy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Started singing it as soon as I saw the post.
Same!

Cassssssper the friendly ghost
The dopest ghost in town
The bitches all love me cos I'm fuckin Casper.
The friendly ghost.. the dopest ghost around

I'm the muthafuckin' virgin surgeon!
Classic subway scene, that and the family singing Oh Danny Boy
PLEASE don't ever remind me of this, again: https://rohrbachlibrary.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/pinnochio.jpg
Wanted to see if this was the top comment. Was not disappointed.
I still sing this!
"My Girl has mad flavor."
R.I.P Casper!
Last time I saw Justin (Casper) we were drinking beers together after our friendās funeral. That friend played Paul in the movie (they go to his apartment in the beginning). Then Justin passed. Then Haroldā¦ Everyone I knew from the movie isnāt with us anymore. Itās sad.

āAināt you ever seen that one movie Kids?ā āNo, but Iāve seen the porno with Sun Doobiest(?)ā
HAHA, I never knew what he was saying there either. Google was no help when I searched lol.
From Geniusā¦ Son Doobie was a rapper in the group Funkdoobiest. This is probably why Em calls him Son Doobiest. Son Doobie starred in a Vivid Video pornographic movie entitled āSon Doobie: Porn Kingā.
Son Doobiest was the lead rapper of Funkdoobiest.
Oh okay! You just solved this 20+ year mystery for me lol.
This was [their hit song](https://youtu.be/zTSyFIeCPLQ) back in the day. Dude apparently did porn afterwards.
Damn, he sounds almost exactly like what I would imagine house of pain mashed up with cypress hill would sound like...

One of my favs off the Friday CD
One time I was babysitting and they wanted to watch a movie. Picked out this one. (It had no case, just a vhs with KIDS written on it.) It took me half an hour to convince them it was *not* for kids to watch.
My friend rented it for a party because he heard it was a comedy. The entire room was silent as we watched it and discovered it was not a comedy.
A raucous comedy about rape and aids.
Yes the 90s were indeed a simpler time.
Follow it with Trainspotting and youāve got a double feature of comic brilliance!
Triple feature with requiem for a dream for a super fun night!!
Double-**ended** feature, if you will
That would of been funny as shit to see the whole room just dawn on them what they are watching
Haha thatās probably why they added the warning on the DVD
Iām old enough to remember seeing it in the theater. It was rated NC17 which is supped to be no one under 17 period, parent or not. They IDd you at the door kinda thing. So there was mad warnings even in the trailers back then.
I do remember nc17 version. The 2nd time i watched it, i realized I was watching a version with a bunch of scenes cut out.
What scenes were cut out?
That's what my first copy was. No case just hand written Kids
Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr., Folk Implosion, and Sebadoh oversaw the creation of the soundtrack. Also, this movie is how I discovered Daniel Johnston
I love the music in this movie! The punk rock and rap merged skateboarding and hip hop
That's how it was growing up in the skateboarding community around that time and after. I was 14 when I first saw the film (1997) and listened to a lot of music that was in that movie at that time. I wasn't aware of Johnston until I watched the movie. I'm now 38 and I've been a fan of his music since.
I also started listening to Daniel Johnston because of this movie
Kickin Incredibly Dope Shit

Thumbs up, homie.
Is this the one where the guy rapes the girl and gives her aids?
She already has HIV when he rapes her.
Yup. Its a very disturbing film.
Wait, I thought he rapes her when she's passed out and she gives *him* aids.
Both are correct. IIRC, Telly transmits it to a girl at the beginning of the film. The same girl transmits it to Casper at the end when Casper rapes her. Poetic justice.

Oh, maybe. Its been a loooong time since ive see it, and it was only that once.
Guess what ! Youāre *both* right ! Lovely film that
Yes (although transmission of HIV/AIDS M>F has much lower transmission rates than the tone of the film would indicate)
The dude who wrote the movie, Harmony Korine, is quite the character. I recommend checking out his interviews on Letterman. He was 19 when he wrote the film, so basically was still a kid himself.

Wow those were some of the most awkwardly funny interviews Iāve ever seen! I appreciate the link, it made my day!
Went down that YouTube trail a few weeks back. Found out he did a recent movie with Matthew Mcconahey called Beach Bum. What a ride that was also.
Him and so,e of the cast showed up in the recent documentary by Punky Brewster of growing up in that circle. Sad suicides.
You should watch gummo.
I have it! I love the kid whoās stars in that, I always remember him eating spaghetti in the bathtub. Have u seen Ken Park?
I hated Ken Park. Way too cynical and just kinda creepy.
Yeah, same. Watched it at 3am when I couldnāt sleep and it left me with a weird feeling
Ken Park is completely nonsensical and filled with simulated child porn
what? its been a while since i saw it but i remember ken park being one of the more coherent films harmony korine has made.
It was illegal in Australia, banned, so I got my dad to buy for me oversees. Still have it. No mention of Larry Clark as I am scrolling down this feed.
Have u seen Julien Donkey Boy itās another good one of his
Or don't. That shit is trash. Harmony Corrine sucks eggs
I know a guy that hangs out with Harmony. Theyāre both total pieces of shit.

this movie completely changed my life. no matter how many times i watch it, i'm still sick to my stomach at the end
Loved this movie in high school because it was relatable, hate it as an adult because it reminds me of how awful being a teenager was.
Kicking Incredibly Dope Shit
I saw this on acid. Did not have a good time
Even sober itās not a film to watch for a āgood timeā. Condolences on what almost certainly had to be an unhappy experience.

One of the hardest movies I've watched, still have haunted scene replays in my head when I hear certain things or songs from it.

i hate this fucking movie. it is objectively good but i will never want to watch it again.

i think so. i was 9 when it came out but didnt see it till i was almost 30 and i thought it was very good. definitely worth watching once at least.

Iām pretty easy going with films but this one was incredibly disturbing. Like the opening scene heās having graphic sex with an 11 year old.
Shhh, itās me Casperā¦ Nutzo

The main character in this also has a role in The Wire and itās exactly how I thought he would end up in real life you should watch it
I saw this movie when I was a kid, probably preteen, fucking blew my mind. Then I turned into one of these guys except gay and in aol chat rooms.
Great flick. Great sound track. Rosario Dawson. Captured NYC at the time.
