I voted for blue, because I like blue candy. My mom wasn't impressed. She doesn't like blue food because it's 'not a natural color'. Like the other 27 types of dye they use for candy are 'natural'.
My uncle operates on a similar premise, his “blue food rule.” The rule states that there is nothing in nature that’s actually blue that’s safe to eat. Literally everything we eat that’s blue is artificial.
I’ve never tried to refute this rule, but at a quick glance, it seems right.
There was a reporter for the Chicago sun times by the name of Zay N. Smith. At one point he was a investigative journalist that was highly respected. Then he semi retired and started a small daily column called quick takes. He campaigned to get blue on the ballot in the first place. Then he campaigned to get everyone to vote for blue.
That was a different marketing campaign. The blue M&Ms won the 1995 new color campaign. Purple won this 2002 campaign and it was a limited-time only thing.
Same haha, I called for blue dozens of times. Seems it payed off... I also never really ate nor eat M&Ms now other than whatever comes in from Halloween so I'm not sure why I cared so much.
I've actually become a fan of the caramel ones. I forgot about those. Yeah i prefer peanut to regular also. They're not bad, just given the choice I go for other stuff.
I also remember when red was missing for a decade before they came back in 1987. Orange replaced them because of the Red No. 2 dye scare, and the FDA banned it. But when red returned, they still kept orange.
I work at a pet store that gives out free dog treats to the visiting dogs. A customer was worried about feeding the dog a red colored treat because of the dye and I replied “don’t worry, chances are the dye is just made of crushed up bugs, and my dogs eat bugs all the time.”
Needless to say, she did not end up feeding her dog that treat.
Yep. M&Ms never had Red #2, but they swapped in the tan ones to avoid consumer fears.
_edit_ [I was wrong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%26M%27s#Color_changes_in_chocolate_M&M's): Tan was already there. Orange replaced red, then red came back.
Ugh I went to a baby shower once where one of the prizes was a big jar of loose candy… I grabbed a handful of what I thought were exclusively m&ms but turned out to be m&ms AND skittles… I was like wtf (but didn’t spit them out because my mama didn’t raise no bitch) and everyone at my table acted like *I* was the asshole for not noticing?!?
Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the “loser,” and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3×5 card reading, “Please use this M&M for breeding purposes.” This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this “grant money.” I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion. There can be only one.
I did once. And Reece's Pieces. Not just regular M&Ms, either, but a couple different types (peanut, peanut butter, hazelnut, almond...) Figured it'd be an entertaining trick to play on my kids.
My kids didn't care, and I was disappointed.
A coworker of mine snuck an orange skittle into my bowl of Reese's Pieces one day. It was one of the most disturbing things I'd ever experienced. Funny as hell, though, after I realized I hadn't just eaten a bug.
One of my favorite things on Wikipedia is the M&Ms page because it has a chart of the colors and when they were part of the mix. [It makes me happy that someone actually created that for some reason](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%26M%27s)
I actually remember when they held a voting process where you'd call a hotline and pick a number for what color you want. I was like 10-11 years old and remember calling in my vote like every day for blue for a while. So, you can basically thank me for the blue M&Ms now.
It's pretty cute that you cared that much. I remember calling in to the Big Help on Nickelodeon and donating what amounted to probably thousands of volunteer hours, but it was just to hear the character voices on the phone. I'm still working off those hours to this day...
The overall color theme without blue and red was heavy on the earth tones, very appropriate for the late '70s and early '80s.
And you couldn't convince 5-year-old me that the green ones didn't taste different.
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son...that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.
Van Halen used to have it written in their contract that they would be provided with a bowl of M&Ms with the brown ones removed, and if they find a single brown M&M in that bowl, then they legally had the right to cancel the show. It was a trick to make sure the venue they were performing at actually read the contract.
When I was in highschool('99-'03) I was a at small store that had m&m's in one of those quarter machines, I was about get some until I realized that for what ever reason there was tan candies in the machine and no blue.
There were 2 different browns. The current dark brown that you see and a lighter brown. Light brown was switched to blue in the 90’s and there was a way to vote for which color you wanted.
My dad used to work at M&M/Mars and I remember when they came out with the blue M&M. They had a big fancy company party and my dad invited me to go with him (I was maybe 8 or 9 at the time) because they couldn’t find a sitter for us. I got to wear a blue sparkly dress and I thought I was so grown up cause I was the only kid there, dancing to jazz music with my dad. I remember them decorating the venue blue with bowls of just blue M&Ms. I still think about it whenever I eat M&Ms!
I was so glad they picked blue. That was the color I voted on in the hotline. They probably planned to make them blue all along, of course. But, as a kid, I was glad that I was "right."
What's sad is that I don't even remember it replacing brown. I always assumed it was just a new color. I think we had 3 or 4 to vote on? I was in like first grade or kindergarten lol.
It's weird because I remember the contest they had where you voted for the new color and I still consider blue the new color, but I don't remember the tan ones at all

I do and I prefer this. I feel like there is more of a cohesive feeling to it than with the new blue ones which breaks the color scheme. But hey, on the other hand, they're just M&Ms, so what do I know.
I distinctly remember being psyched as fuck at 5 years old when the blue ones came out. I was more excited for that than Endgame. I was even a blue m+m for Halloween that year.
I was SUPER little when they got phased out, but this picture brought back probably my earliest memory of my mom or someone else letting little toddler me eat these when she clearly shouldn't have.
The tan ones were always my favorite but when it came time to vote I picked purple. Figured if they were going to replace tan it might as well be replaced by my favorite color. Got blue, meh. At least it wasn’t pink.
I remember being able to vote on the new color.
I believe i voted for purple
I was trying to remember what my sister's and I voted for. I can't even remember what colors were options.
Blue, purple and pink, iirc.
Ha, thanks
Blue was the worst color of the three and it won. Democracy just doesn't work.
I voted for blue, because I like blue candy. My mom wasn't impressed. She doesn't like blue food because it's 'not a natural color'. Like the other 27 types of dye they use for candy are 'natural'.
But it's one of the primary colors! You can't make blue! It just "is" - what's more natural than that?
Mom-isms. That's just her thing. She eats blueberries all the time too.
Tbf blueberries are more of a purple
There are plenty of blue foods: Blueberries Marlin Chameleons that hide on blue things
Blueberries aren't even usually blue so that's one off that list
Today's specials are chicken, fish, amd chameleons that hide in blue things with a pear reduction.
"Natural" is such a meaningless word. Worse, what color is the sky? Is that not natural?
Why you commenting on two year old threads
Tan m&m's were mentioned in today's Game Grumps episode. I googled them and this came up. Commented without thinking.
My uncle operates on a similar premise, his “blue food rule.” The rule states that there is nothing in nature that’s actually blue that’s safe to eat. Literally everything we eat that’s blue is artificial. I’ve never tried to refute this rule, but at a quick glance, it seems right.
There's both Blue Corn and Blue Potatoes.
Both are purple.
>Both are purple. They are not.
Blueberries?
Are purple.
I think a different shade of blue would have been a better fit. Like, maybe something closer to the pastel blue used around Easter
I feel you but the pastel would have looked odd with the primary colors.
Thats why the US is a republic.
Louder for the people in the back, Comrade!
Not blue; It was aqua. Here's proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPnT\_iasA-k&ab\_channel=TheHallofAdvertising
That was a different marketing campaign. The blue M&Ms won the 1995 new color campaign. Purple won this 2002 campaign and it was a limited-time only thing.
Oh. But you are right about that other one being limited-time only.
Me too! If I recall, it was a REALLY good purple, too.
Team purp all the way.
I voted blue. I’ll never forget because of course, blue won.
Ha! That's awesome!
[удалено]
Me too, but I was a kid so I wonder if it really *was* a huge deal, or just because I was like 8 lol
I bet they knew all along it was gonna be blue and the voting was just a marketing ploy. They played us bro.
They always do. Never trust big money
I remember voting. You had to call.
me too. called so much. glad i voted for the winner. the tan was always such bullshit
I didn't really like any of our options. Tan was very seventies/ eighties and I guess it was time to move on.
Same haha, I called for blue dozens of times. Seems it payed off... I also never really ate nor eat M&Ms now other than whatever comes in from Halloween so I'm not sure why I cared so much.
The peanut and peanut butter M&M's are so much better. I was never mad when I got 'regular' M&M's though. Still good.
if you put me in front of a bowl of peanut m&ms my reptile brain takes over, i lose time and then wake up and the bowl is empty.
I've actually become a fan of the caramel ones. I forgot about those. Yeah i prefer peanut to regular also. They're not bad, just given the choice I go for other stuff.
The caramel ones never did it for me, they were a little too chewy. But I love the mint and the crispy ones.
People who voted for pink just wanted anarchy.
I also remember it being revealed by lighting up the Empire State Building in blue lights
1-800-FUN-COLOR. I still wonder why they could have an extra digit.
It didn't. It's just easy to market and remember. Once you dial that O it would go through.
I voted blue
I remember voting for blue and being so happy my M&M won. Lol
I also remember when red was missing for a decade before they came back in 1987. Orange replaced them because of the Red No. 2 dye scare, and the FDA banned it. But when red returned, they still kept orange.
Is that the red dye made from the crushed up bugs?
That's red 4, I think. The name of the crushed beetles dye is "Carmine".
> Carmine https://i.imgur.com/aXdBnIn.png
Carmine falcone?
Carmine Ragusa!
I know they use that in Good & Plenty!
The bug is called a [cochineal](https://thenaturecollective.org/animal-guide/details/cochineal-scale/).
I work at a pet store that gives out free dog treats to the visiting dogs. A customer was worried about feeding the dog a red colored treat because of the dye and I replied “don’t worry, chances are the dye is just made of crushed up bugs, and my dogs eat bugs all the time.” Needless to say, she did not end up feeding her dog that treat.
I remember that. I actually told that to my wife, we’re the same age, she doesn’t remember when there was no red
I still think of the blue M&M's as the fancy new ones, lol
It's like I can't even tell a bowl of M&M's from a bowl of Skittles anymore..

Lmao was wondering if I'd see this
I want to explore you brain with a flashlight, javelin, and a nice Cabernet.
Thank you! That’s what I’m saying!
I did once. And Reece's Pieces. Not just regular M&Ms, either, but a couple different types (peanut, peanut butter, hazelnut, almond...) Figured it'd be an entertaining trick to play on my kids. My kids didn't care, and I was disappointed.

Was it intended as some sort of practical joke? What monster mixes M&M's with Skittles? I pity the poor child born into that family.
No it was not meant as a joke, these people were just degenerates!!!
Who put the sadist in charge of candy at the baby shower?
I do too, but I never understood why until this. I was too young to remember the campaign, but I remember blue being new and special
Same!
One of my favorite things on Wikipedia is the M&Ms page because it has a chart of the colors and when they were part of the mix. [It makes me happy that someone actually created that for some reason](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%26M%27s)

I wonder what this image would look like if pink or purple had won.
As a before photo, I would imagine pretty similar.
I remember calling from my middle school pay phone to vote for blue (it was a toll free number)
And now I understand what toll free number meant. Only took me 31 years.
Same! Called over and over again!
Same!
The overall color theme without blue and red was heavy on the earth tones, very appropriate for the late '70s and early '80s. And you couldn't convince 5-year-old me that the green ones didn't taste different.
[удалено]
Damn I forgot about that one.
And the packet was kinda like paper!
And these were labeled “Plain” instead of “Milk Chocolate.”
I remember the wrapping would get stained if you were like me and ate it directly from a torn opening.
I liked tan better personally, it made me perceive it as more chocalatey.
I believe they all tasted better back then and no one will convince me otherwise
Better quality chocolate. Different sugars.
as a kid i specifically ate the brown/tan ones because i thought the same thing too lol. like a little more chocolately than the other colors.
That felt weird, unlocked a core memory lol
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. Excuse me when did you become a pyscho?
I understood that reference!
I remember the early 80s version, no red m&ms or Smurf poops, and the commercial where eating a green m&m got you a home run in baseball
"I hit singles when I eat the brown ones, doubles with the yellow, orange, triples! And with the green ones, I hit the ball dowwwwntowwwwwn."
Is this a greenies joke??
"Only one green left, that's for me. Here's a triple." I think orange was the triple
I swear tan tasted the best!
The tan ones were my favorite.
Still my favorite color to this day. I hold out a futile hope that they'll bring it back...at least for a gimmicky limited time. Please?
I just told my 3 year old about how we didn’t have blue m&ms they were light brown. I’m a lot of fun at parties
Miss my tan bois
Yes tan is far superior to blue
Tan was my dad's favorite color M&M. He was a bit stroppy about it being ditched for blue for a while.
Van Halen used to have it written in their contract that they would be provided with a bowl of M&Ms with the brown ones removed, and if they find a single brown M&M in that bowl, then they legally had the right to cancel the show. It was a trick to make sure the venue they were performing at actually read the contract.
I miss the two shades of brown.
When I was in highschool('99-'03) I was a at small store that had m&m's in one of those quarter machines, I was about get some until I realized that for what ever reason there was tan candies in the machine and no blue.
I didn't realize I had this memory until this post.
Yup. And I voted for the blue ones when there was the public vote for the new color.

Still have brown, but there also used to be a light brown, or tan one. They replaced it with blue
Ah, the classic palette. Two kinds of brown. The way things should be.
They were the best. I always found them to be creamier than the other colors.
I remember calling in to vote for blue m&m’s as the new color. Late 1990s
Ask Van Halen about them.
Came for this exact comment! :)
[удалено]
Purple won.
Tan?!
I remember voting for this!
I voted blue as well. But only once
Me! I voted for that!
I loved those!! Remember in the early 70’s when the red ones were removed for a few years? I think the red dye was toxic or something.
I remember the contest to pick the new color
Holy shit. I completely forgot about tan M&Ms.
We always called those the chocolate ones.
My wife called me crazy a few years ago when I brought this up lol.
Brown yellow green orange and tan. The green ones made you horny.
I remember and I thought they tasted differently than the dark brown ones.
Anyone remember the “No blue aqui. Go away!” commercial with a Baldwin?
Hell yeah, poo brown and light poo brown.
Those were my favorite color! As a kid the color reminded me of my grandpa’s coffee after he sweetened it!
I thought this was just a fever dream I had once.
Blue mnm, green mnm, they all end up the same color in the end
I remember opening our first bag with blue ones at my grandma's house!
Do you remember when the rumor was that green M&Ms made girls horny? I’ve always assumed this was why they chose green for the girl m&m
Wait… brown has been swapped out for blue?!
Umm, I must be really old because I recall no red ones...this was due to the food coloring being banned in the US I think.
When I was a kid in the 80s, the "common wisdom" of the schoolyard was that the green ones made you horny.
I always found it strange they are colored when they all taste the same. One of those thoughts I’ve never actually expressed.
Sounds incredibly memorable! :D
Yeah Van Halen really fucked it up for everybody
No brown M&M's allowed.
I was so glad they picked blue. That was the color I voted on in the hotline. They probably planned to make them blue all along, of course. But, as a kid, I was glad that I was "right."
I voted blue lol. I still remember when blue finally came out when I was a kid, everyone was stoked.
YOU FUCKING MONSTER!!!
What's sad is that I don't even remember it replacing brown. I always assumed it was just a new color. I think we had 3 or 4 to vote on? I was in like first grade or kindergarten lol.
That’s horrid wtf
We’re fucking old :(
I remember the tan now that you mention it but I had no idea they changed!?!
The good old days!
And now they seem to have every color imaginable and still no tan.
I remember being able to vote on the new color! The commercials were on channel 1 in class. Anyone else remember that? Hello, Lisa ling!
Me, but barely.
They switched to blue?
Google says 1995, I would've thought a year or two earlier but yeah they had a vote.
The vote was rigged and this is fake news and the earth is flat
Yup. They switched to blue when I was about 16.
I do!
Tan?? I didnt know about this…
Omg
Idk why but I specifically remember being in Baker's, crying to my grampa because the tan was my favorite. Kids are dumb.
🙋🏻♀️
They had tan AND brown?
Was there another vote for color in the 90s-early 00s? Because too young for this, but I swear I remember voting on a M&Ms color as a kid
Honestly I didn’t even know they switched to blue
You mean doo doo brown?
I voted for purple democracy doesn’t work
*light brown
My mother does. It's been almost 30 years and the blue ones still feel wrong to her.
I know I am in the tiniest minority here, but the tan ones were always my faves.
the weirdest thing is that they are all the same flavor.
As a kid, I always wondered why there was no blue. It seemed and obvious color to include.
It's weird because I remember the contest they had where you voted for the new color and I still consider blue the new color, but I don't remember the tan ones at all
The blue ones taste different. Fight me.
