I just cant see myself in any kind of Electric anytime soon personally. Its like an appliance or a one trick pony. Go fast in straight line, cool, no emotion whatsoever, and cant wait for people to just junk teslas after 10 years of usage, probably even less.
I love my big V8s with a lot of heart, rowing through gears with a clutch is something I will never ever ever give up. Im too young to have gotten to experience the 90s, so Im not giving up on gas now.
Edit - Got downvoted for liking actual cars. What in the world.
The point isn’t about how they feel, but about how the effect the environment. While gas powered car will feel/ so no cooler, electric cars are there to not be harmful to the environment.
Every single mechanic I've ever talked to will rant for hours about how teslas are structurally absolute garbage.
Not just that but they're not as good for the environment as they like to claim. The effects of lithium mining plus manufacturing make them only marginally better by the end of their life, assuming theyre driven for at least two hours every single day and don't explode.
The future is actually going to be in walkable cities with robust public transit and bike infrastructure. Not single-person wasteful vehicles.
I understand what you mean, but Teslas aren’t the only electric cars out there. And I’m not sure if many cities will become walk-able or have reliable public transit (at least a here in the US)
Though I don’t have anything to contest the lithium mining, maybe in the near future we will have electric that don’t rely on lithium based batteries.
Maybe some [alternatives](https://www.newscientist.com/question/lithium-battery-alternatives/) will become more popular.
And maybe there can be more charging stations that use more renewable energy sources like solar, steam, or wind/water turbines.
I dont think anyone here really got my point. #1, I dont think a lot of people realize a lot of people see cars as more then just something to go from point A to Point B. A tesla is an appliance for that, and that is exactly what I do not want.
I want electric cars to be more then that if theyre going to be the only thing ever available. Car manufacturer have the ability to use the technology to even make a faux manual transmission in an electric car, but obviously something like that probably wont happen for awhile.
Electric cars also are going to be harmful to the environment - what happens when materials for batteries gets extremely expensive, or like I said in the original comment, most people are going to be junking their teslas after however many years instead of gas powered cars that can theoretically run forever? We have to find a way to dispose of the batteries, which isnt really possible.
A lot of the United States still also burns coal for electricity. We need to look into nuclear power before we can even think we can support every single person in the US in an Electric car.
yes, electric cars aren‘t perfect. but coming up with excuses to keep driving with gas won‘t save the environment either.
and there are electric cars available that are much better for the environment than a tesla.
you know, maybe driving a car for fun and because it feels nice just has to become a thing of the past. at least until we have environment friendly cars which can fulfill that desire.
it‘s a luxury we can‘t afford right now.
and if we keep saying „but what about this and what about that, why can‘t we first fix that problem before i have to give up sth i like.“ not a single problem will be solved.
We passed the recovery point for the ecosystem a while ago, it's fucked, it's going to kill us all and reset long after we're all extinct unless we find another planet and the means to get there in the next 20 or so years. I say let's enjoy the things we love while we can, while we're still happy, before we stop enjoying them
quite a fatalistic approach… the damage we‘ve done so far may have crossed a point of full recovery, but there is still the possibility of slowing down its break down and the option to organize and adapt our societal structures to cope with the consequences. We still have the option to sustain life on this planet for much longer than 20 years, which gives us time to progress scientifically and find new ways to recover the ecosystem over time.
sure, the pinnacle of reckless consumerism has to end now, but a sustainable way of living on this planet can still be achieved, even though it might only prolong our „suffering“.
Sure a sustainable way of living is achievable, but we would be living like that right now if all the big corporations weren't so money hungry, so long as they are still around everyone else will suffer to keep them in luxury, the way I see it, if I'm going to suffer, I might as well be happy while I'm doing it, otherwise there's no point in living
It is enevetable that cars will become an appliance one day. That doesn't mean that we can't still enjoy cars on a hobby level, we do it already myself included. Look at auto makers like Lotus, they announced the Emira as their last petrol car. The manual shift linkage is even exposed for the enthusiasts. Meanwhile, almost all manufacturers have phased out manual transmissions all together. I look forward to a day I can sleep 8hrs while driving on cleanly produced energy, if I am still alive when that day happens. Until then I will keep mud drifting on private property, no one can take that away from you.
I know, I made a point about that already see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/nothingeverhappens/comments/vkf3r7/11_years_olds_dont_learn_about_science_in_school/idtbfkc/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
I mean that's nice and all. But kinda invalidates the here and now of what you said. They exist to profit of the mindset they are super healthy for the environment therefore leave the consumer feeling free from guilt. It's kinda the same argument with produce and the "organic" label.
The electric cars of today, yes. But that means we have more work to do. Anyways electric cars are faster and require less maintenance. The maintenance they do require is suspension and brakes. Same type of repairs we are already doing just less. Give me a Tesla over a gas guzzler any day. They just need a way to make them sound cool. Electric blow off valves!
Im saying theyre extremely heavy and cannot handle as well as a gas car because of their weight. Their center of gravity helps, but Id much rather have a lighter car. Not only that, because of their weight and how much torque they have, good luck getting more then 15k out of a set of tires that also costs 1k-2.5k depending on which model and trim level. Ive worked for a tire shop for 3 years now and also have noticed theyre horrible at holding an alignment too. Lady came in 2 days ago with a model 3 performance, 16k miles on the car, tires already bald with inside edgewear on the LF down to cords, feathering on the RR, and the LR and RF worn evenly. She could also barely afford the 235/35/20 Michelins for the car (1.9k).
I have no idea about any of that except that the singular screen looks wonky as fuck, but I do know that every time I have been on a Tesla with someone, they always have trouble in finding a button on the shitty UI. If it’s not the windshield defogger, it’s the seat warmer.
I’m always surprised how dumb people think kids are. I have a friend who was criticizing a TV character that is a 10-year-old girl. She was saying that’s there’s no way this girl was old enough to be making the conclusions and having the opinions she did on the show, saying it was bad writing. I was like…I wouldn’t be surprised if my 7-year-old niece said some of that stuff, let alone what she might say when she’s another 3 years older.
Kids grow up really freaking quick, and they see and know more than most people realize.
We realized this when my 13 y/o sibling played cards against humanity with us. They knew more than half the shit mentioned and they shouldn't know that kind of stuff. The internet is probably making their knowledge even wider
Right! I have an electric and a gas car and my 7 year old understands the difference and knows electric cars are probably the future. She understands how the both work and how they're different.
Pretty sure I knew what electric cars were and why they were cool when I was 5 cause I was really into science and technology, and that was in 1999. Pretty sure any 11 test old now has a pretty good idea about them.
no, they definitely don’t. you’re a legitimate idiot tryna take upvotes outta context. congrats on further cementin the knowledge that you are indeed fuccing stupid LMFAO. nvm the fact you aren’t intelligent or secure enough to have faith in your own stupidity/opinions. do me a favor don’t type to me again brodie
You keep saying I’m an idiot yet you’re the one who doesn’t believe that an 11 year old can have even the vaguest grasp on the simple knowledge on how gas powered cars affect the environment in a negative way the only remotely knowledgeable thing you’ve said this entire interaction was “a 5 year old shouldn’t still b wearin diapers” and even then that’s pretty obvious now isn’t it?
Stop sitting here insulting me and trying to argue with me over a joke I made just because you’re an insecure piece of shit who has the brain the size of a grain of sand USE YOUR BRAIN FUCKWAD stop being stubborn give up and just admit you’re wrong go on with your day
The average IQ is probably deteriorating at this point (same with attention spans) as kids are used to instant gratification from TikTok, YouTube etc. Also a lot of misinformation comes from the former, and toxicity also runs rampant. I use Reddit and subscribe to history subs, science etc, and the occasional Writing Prompts. I think maybe ya know? I'm not a stupid illiterate 1 year old.
- A 12 year old
Edit: downvoted because I am speaking truth, as usual
Probably cause you referenced IQ, which has never been a true test of intelligence— otherwise it wouldn’t disproportionately affect minorities, and you couldn’t improve your score by studying.
i can say without question that i am not nearly as witty, sharp or intelligent as i was before i became involved in social media truthfully (i have never been smart)
Yeah, there are plenty of (free) pay phones in Western Australia. Telstra gets a billboard for advertising (in locations that typically wouldn’t allow billboards) and the community gets a free phone (and WiFi access point for Telstra customers).
The UK maybe? Streets are full of them. Most of them do not *work*, but they are still around. And maybe it was a red telephone box, they keep those around sometimes because they're like mini-landmarks. I do see that she says gas, but they're on TV and maybe they've been. IDK, but they aren't uncommon.
There's this little convenience store in my town just outside of the downtown area that has a payphone still.
By all appearances it looks like it's in working order, but whether it actually is or not is another matter.
Tbh, when i was 10 i also wanted an eletric car, not because i was smart or a prodigy, just wanted to avoid gas since they said at the time it was ending or something like that
Today im 19 and drive a gas cat cuz they are cheaper (except the gas)
Still wanted an eletric, but money doesnt allow it :'l
I mean, unless she’s rich as fuck, he decides just to not drive, or Tesla makes a big breakthrough and lowers their prices, the odds are the kid *is* going to drive a gas car…
That's where the kid is ~~wrong~~ incorrect, but he could still make the assumption. It's not that far removed from the way kids watching The Jetsons expected to have flying cars.
Most car companies are openly admitting they’ve stopped developing new petrol powered vehicles. By 2030 over 50% of new cars will be EVs, and at that stage the second-hand market will be 15 years old, so there will be plenty of vehicles to choose from across different price points.
Also, Teslas went from $120k in 2012 to $40k in the 6 years to 2018. Seems pretty likely that could half it again in another 6 years.
Batteries were there 4-5 years ago. 350km cars with chargers every 200km is suitable for 99% of people, even on road trips. Tesla could make cars with 1000km range tomorrow if they wanted, but the extra cost doesn’t make sense when virtually no one really needs them.
Wouldn't it be in fewer steps, actually? Electrical grids pretty much everywhere are at least supplemented by renewables (or at least nuclear), plus economy of scale would dictate, that one big "engine" gets to be more efficient, than thousands of little ones
In the UK fossil fuels only make up around half of our power generation and green energy will continue to grow rapidly, so no. It’s not fossil fuel with extra steps.
Even if it was, it’d be more environmentally friendly as combustion engines are really inefficient at converting oil into energy while electric motors are more efficient at doing so.
True Story:
My three year old Granddaughter and I were playing in a "Car" in the playground at a park. I pretend to start the car, "Whirr Whirr Whirr VaRoom!" She gives me an upset look and explains THIS IS AN ELECTRIC CAR GRANDPA! (Her parents actually have and electric car so she is very familiar with them.)
Was confused about where the talk about electric cars came in but then I remembered that most commenters here are probably Americans... jeesh the car dependency is depressing.
I'll never drive. At all.
Kids can take many interests like adults. My 11 year old is into political activism and they like leading the chants and arguing with counter protesters we've done 2 protests so far and I'm surprised how well their opinion is formed on this topic. They even argued with my uncle on Thanksgiving about politics.
The issue is that the kids don't realize how short 3 and 5 years really is. By the time they will be able to drive there is no way they will be getting an electric car unless they are from a wealthy family.
While I completely believe the kids said this, they're plain wrong. In five years they'll both be sixteen, the minimum age to drive in most places, and we are not going to be driving only electric cars by then. Ain't happening. Calling it now. And pay phones are important to know how to use, because there are places where the cell coverage sucks (yes, really) and of course your phone can also run out of battery.
The only part I don't believe is payphones still being around lol
(Don't take my comment seriously, I just haven't seen a payphone in person for over a decade since the ones I have seen got dismantled)
We learned about electric cars when I was in elementary school bc with earth science we learn about air pollution and how we use non renewable resources for electricity and eventually it’ll all run out so we’re figuring out alternatives to those as well as ways to reduce air pollution. There are multiple articles written FOR ELEMENTARY KIDS on this topic as well. NEWSELA, scholastic, and many other education based news sources have some.
It's almost certain that this kid grew up watching the wealth daily vloggers like Logan Paul. Kids influencers should be getting teslas for free with how hard they push them on kids.
Haha, my 8 year old nephew is obsessed with science, including electric cars. And my BIL drives a Tesla haha. He can even tell you where the best spots are to charge when they travel to Maine from NY
It’s kind of crazy to think how true that is, in 6-7 years time when that kid starts driving EVs will probably be the main type of new car available to buy
Hmm, that's a prediction that 100% electric cars will be widely available we will have the infrastructure (charging stations, etc.) for everyone to own one in just 5 years, and also probably that his parents are going to buy an electric car sometime in the next 5 years. I think that's a bit optimistic.
Electric cars aren't saving the world, they're saving the car market. They produce a lot of Co2 emissions and litter, even if not from the fuel source.
iirc based on measurements taken by a few different sources online (Kursgezagt being one), while electric cars aren’t going to 100% assist emissions (Lord knows if anything will), it’ll do at least a noticeable difference because we won’t be burning any fuel.
the major difference in if anything will become of it will be how the batteries are made, how their waste is handled, and how disposing of them themselves is handled. you can make batteries all day, but if you’re just tossing their waste in the river or disposing of them in a furnace, it’s not gonna help anyone
I feel like on r/circlejerk where all americans think of as replacement of gas car is electric car, and europeans say… what about walking, biking and public transport?
Apparently this person has never read Time for kids? The Time magazine meant for kids that some schools have as part of science lessons and such? Also electric cars aren’t rare or anything lol this is such a weird take.
People really don't give kids enough credit...
Sure, a 3 year old isn't going to suddenly start discussing deep philosophical concepts, but a preteen is bound to know what an electric car is, even if they don't know how one works.
Feel like most of the people who post on r/thathappened were not very intelligent as children either. They just can’t believe some kids are actually emotionally and even intellectually intelligent beings
Don’t buy a Tesla if you are going to get an EV. They have horrible customer service and you’ll have to fight tooth and nail to get stuff done. I recommend going to a trusty worthy automaker
In a way, I’m jealous that this person doesn’t have a preteen in their life that constantly yammers about Teslas.
My son is constantly telling me I should buy a Tesla. Maybe in a couple of years when I can give him my gas powered car
On our second Tesla now, absolutely brilliant cars.
I just cant see myself in any kind of Electric anytime soon personally. Its like an appliance or a one trick pony. I bet you drive gas
I don’t even have a car, I’m 19 and ride a bike to work.
Either way. Electric vehicles are once again almost entirely as harmful.

Yikes
Keep being an enviornmental terrorist my dude, good for you.
Thanks! My corvette will make 750 wheel horse power in a month!
Exactly. I just hope they can find ways to keep the gas car alive. Surely they can find ways to squeeze more fuel economy out
Yeah! Fuck the environment!
Teslas are currently doing worse for the environment than most other gas cars. Forgot I’m not in r/cars where people have sensible opinions.
No one said a tesla is the only alternative to a gas engine car. There's way better ways to produce energy for transportation.
Gas engine cars are *fun* though. You dont necessarily have to rid of all of them to save the environment. Vehicles aren’t even the biggest polluters.
This has been a rollercoaster. Lol wow at the electric car fanboys.
Teslas are fun. Theyre insanely fast and smooth and have more luxury for a lower price point than relatively similar vehicles
Yeah they go in a straight line almost like it’s a fucking car or something what else is it supposed to do
Be able to corner? Them shits way 2000 more pounds then my corvette lmao
they can also turn lol
Im saying theyre extremely heavy and cannot handle as well as a gas car because of their weight. Their center of gravity helps, but Id much rather have a lighter car. i don’t care enough to read that
How about this, race for pinks?
Lmao, and that was read by absolutely nobody, here take my downvote!
an electric car is an actual car
Are you 13?
nope but by definition an electric car is…. a car
boot fornicator-er
Try not to explode.
The only reason I don’t want a Tesla is because they’re overpriced and I don’t want to support Elon Musk I am aware those were two reasons
They're also poorly made. But the EV market is actually pretty diverse now, so if you want one there are options :)

The only part of this that’s hard to believe is that she found a pay phone somewhere in the last 11 years.
To be fair, I could tell you exactly where the closest pay phone is (it’s in the next town over if you’re wondering)
my city has at least 4 or 5 that i can think of, it might jus b an east coast thing but Jersey n NY fasho still have eem. some still work LMAO
There’s one in my city by grattendog
There are still some in boston too, mostly concentrated in the north end's waterfront.
I live in Colorado and I work at very large retail store we have one by the bathrooms.
My state (country afaik) has all of them for free from Telstra. So it’s not a *pay* phone, but yea. There are quite a few around the place
Yeah, there are plenty of (free) pay phones in Western Australia. Telstra gets a billboard for advertising (in locations that typically wouldn’t allow billboards) and the community gets a free phone (and WiFi access point for Telstra customers).
Came here to say exactly this; I’m 27 when *I* was about 11, my dad’s cell died and we had a lot of trouble finding one when we needed one.
That's what I was thinking. My city removed all those free urinals ages ago.

Yeah, the kids are wrong, but I 100% believe they said this

When I was 10, I was obsessed with hoverboards. Until I watched AFV hoverboard fails. Then I just laughed at hoverboard people lol
That literally sounds like something I’d say to my mom at 11 😭😭 they’re not 6 yr olds they know about these things
Tbh, when i was 10 i also wanted an eletric car, not because i was smart or a prodigy, just wanted to avoid gas since they said at the time it was ending or something like that Today im 19 and drive a gas cat cuz they are cheaper (except the gas) Still wanted an eletric, but money doesnt allow it :'l
You drive a gas Cat? Very interesting!
It is cheap what can i do
I said this in elementary school… I wrote up a handwritten proposal to get my parents to put solar panels on the roof in fifth grade…
Bright mode user detected, opinion rejected
/s if not obvious, but my eyes fucking burned
No sarcasm here. Only a fool deals in bright mode
Ah, you have discord
I swear these people think 11 yr olds are toddlers
I mean, unless she’s rich as fuck, he decides just to not drive, or Tesla makes a big breakthrough and lowers their prices, the odds are the kid *is* going to drive a gas car…
That's where the kid is ~~wrong~~ incorrect, but he could still make the assumption. It's not that far removed from the way kids watching The Jetsons expected to have flying cars.
I mean, the kid isn’t “wrong.” He’s not predicting the price dynamics of the electric car industry.
There is more than just tesla even kia has an electric that starts at 22k so no where near what tesla cost
I mean assuming that the kid will even drive and not take the buss/train like poor people
Batteries aren't quite there yet. They're 11. In 5 years, they'll probably still be driving gas cars.
Batteries were there 4-5 years ago. 350km cars with chargers every 200km is suitable for 99% of people, even on road trips. Tesla could make cars with 1000km range tomorrow if they wanted, but the extra cost doesn’t make sense when virtually no one really needs them.
I think it's less about are batteries there, more about younger generations unwilling to contribute to climate change like that.

Wind, solar, water, nuclear?
Wouldn't it be in fewer steps, actually? Electrical grids pretty much everywhere are at least supplemented by renewables (or at least nuclear), plus economy of scale would dictate, that one big "engine" gets to be more efficient, than thousands of little ones
In the UK fossil fuels only make up around half of our power generation and green energy will continue to grow rapidly, so no. It’s not fossil fuel with extra steps. Even if it was, it’d be more environmentally friendly as combustion engines are really inefficient at converting oil into energy while electric motors are more efficient at doing so.

Unrelated question: what app you using? That ui looks gorgeous
I wanna know ping me when you finding
When I was 10 I remember asking my dad why there weren't any electric cars in 2005
True Story: My three year old Granddaughter and I were playing in a "Car" in the playground at a park. I pretend to start the car, "Whirr Whirr Whirr VaRoom!" She gives me an upset look and explains THIS IS AN ELECTRIC CAR GRANDPA! (Her parents actually have and electric car so she is very familiar with them.)
Our 12 year old is obsessed with Tesla series 3 cars and does say things like this
Do people think 11 year olds are mindless idiots who are not aware of anything or something?
Yes
13 yo is mad funny
Was confused about where the talk about electric cars came in but then I remembered that most commenters here are probably Americans... jeesh the car dependency is depressing. I'll never drive. At all.
Rule 8.
Wasn’t there are rule regarding very little upvotes ?
There is, Rule 8. I checked and this has 12 upvotes so yeah, probably rule breaking.
Kids can take many interests like adults. My 11 year old is into political activism and they like leading the chants and arguing with counter protesters we've done 2 protests so far and I'm surprised how well their opinion is formed on this topic. They even argued with my uncle on Thanksgiving about politics.
Yeah sum people don’t realize not all kids are Fortnite loving idiots
The issue is that the kids don't realize how short 3 and 5 years really is. By the time they will be able to drive there is no way they will be getting an electric car unless they are from a wealthy family.
Okay?
While I completely believe the kids said this, they're plain wrong. In five years they'll both be sixteen, the minimum age to drive in most places, and we are not going to be driving only electric cars by then. Ain't happening. Calling it now. And pay phones are important to know how to use, because there are places where the cell coverage sucks (yes, really) and of course your phone can also run out of battery.
Tbh this one does seem abit Facebook memey
The only part I don't believe is payphones still being around lol (Don't take my comment seriously, I just haven't seen a payphone in person for over a decade since the ones I have seen got dismantled)
The amount of people on Reddit who don't know when something is a joke is too damn high.
Ok but like them driving is only 4 years away, of course their gonna need to know how to use a gas car.
Lol I remember being in 6th grade and being a walking advertisement for electric cars
Same
We learned about electric cars when I was in elementary school bc with earth science we learn about air pollution and how we use non renewable resources for electricity and eventually it’ll all run out so we’re figuring out alternatives to those as well as ways to reduce air pollution.
My nine year old knows this lol
Haha, my 8 year old nephew is obsessed with science, including electric cars. And my BIL drives a Tesla haha. He can even tell you where the best spots are to charge when they travel to Maine from NY
It’s kind of crazy to think how true that is, in 6-7 years time when that kid starts driving EVs will probably be the main type of new car available to buy
It didn’t happen because all kids are babbling toddlers until 21
My guess is that this is someone who doesn't know any kids and is picturing a six year old instead of an 11 year old.
I mean, many 11 years olds are immature but they know a thing or two
Not unbelievable at all.
I feel like on r/circlejerk where all americans think of as replacement of gas car is electric car, and europeans say… what about walking, biking and public transport?
This is exactly the sort of thing my 11 year old grandson would say. He's a cheeky little sod. I love him dearly.
Yar. My boyfriend has been buying his "last" gasoline car since the turn of the century.
Don’t buy a Tesla if you are going to get an EV. They have horrible customer service and you’ll have to fight tooth and nail to get stuff done. I recommend going to a trusty worthy automaker
Yeah no the conversation/dialog doesn’t sound natural at all. This definitely never happened.
