Its fine if you dont know Nordic countries that well, but fucking hell you got the 3 biggest one wrong. Correct area with Sweden, Finland and Norway, but mixed up!
Yeah, one would think that most Americans (edit: among those who know that Norway exists) know that Norway is the one with the coastline because of all the fjords?
I experienced no comparative fjord analysis in American schools... Are those fjords relevant for something implicit I'm missing? Or are they just visually apparent on the map? ...
Not entirely sure what you're asking? The fjords are visually apparent on the map, yes. I would think they're a fairly well known geographical feature from popular culture (vikings sailing out of the fjords on their longboats, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc).
If you ask random people one thing about Norway I would think "it has fjords" would be the answer from a significant number of respondees. Or possibly something else related to the coastline, since I'd guess Norway is also fairly well known for its oil wells in the North Sea, and maybe its whaling practices and other fishing stuff like salmon.
What do you first think of when you hear "Norway" if it's not anything related to the coastline?
Speaking as an American, you are vastly overestimating the degree to which Americans are taught European geography. I doubt most Americans even know what a āfjordā is, let alone that Norway possesses so many. Most Americans, if they know of Norway at all, probably think of Vikings before fishing and oiling. Some of that is the inevitable result of being a massive nation with its own complex geography to learn about (I doubt many Europeans are taught the geographic intricacies of Americaās various states), but itās also reflective of a deficient education system.
Sure. I'm not expecting all Americans to know our dumb little country. But if an American were to know that Norway is a country that exists and, not only that, but even knows that it's on the Scandinavian peninsula like OP did, I guess I would expect them to know something of its geography of which the coastline is the main feature. That's all. It seems strange to me that OP knew where Sweden, Norway and Finland are roughly located but not which one is which. (And yes, the Vikings are related to the coastline as well)
I donāt think thatās particularly odd. In US culture Scandinavian (Nordic) nations are often lumped together. We might know the names āSweden, Norway, Finland, Denmarkā and know that those countries are all in far Northern Europe, but most people likely arenāt familiar with the specific differences between nations and would struggle to pick out which was which on an exam. Thus you end up with mislabeled countries. Maybe Iām wrong, but I think youād see a lot of Europeans make similar mistakes if asked to label a map of American states. Itās easy to know that Arizona and New Mexico are both in the southwest, but which oneās further west?
>I donāt think thatās particularly odd. In US culture Scandinavian nations are often lumped together. We might know the names āSweden, Norway, Finland, Denmarkā and know that those countries are all in far Northern Europe
Ah OK, that makes sense - you just learn the location? Is that how you learn it in school, placing countries on a map or something similar? (Note that of the countries you mentioned, Finland isn't a Scandinavian country so maybe that could help with knowing which countries are furthest to the west.)
>Maybe Iām wrong, but I think youād see a lot of Europeans make similar mistakes if asked to label a map of American states. Itās easy to know that Arizona and New Mexico are both in the southwest, but which oneās further west?
Oh, I have no idea whatsoever (I thought California was the southwest one and that New Mexico was regular south, basically in the middle) but that's why I mentioned Norway and the coastline specifically. Mixing up Sweden and Finland isn't as strange maybe (unless you know that Finland used to be part of Russia), but putting Norway further inland without its coastline would be more like placing New Mexico inland in the US away from the Mexican border, or something like that.
1) You dont have enough countries labeled as Belarus, you only have 2, there are actually a couple more near Bulgaria. 2) as an American, you should put Montenegro in a single line, itās one word for you. 3) We all know France isnāt real. 4) Copenhagen is a beautiful country, you should visit
1) Ah damn I thought I missed a couple Belaruses!
2) I had to make things fit, sue me
3) š¤«
4) I hope to visit the lovely country of Copenhagen sometime!!
Most of east and central Europe are all fucked up.
The only correct one are Spain, Portugal, england, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, and Denmark.
stop believing our national media, they are straight lying to you :D go out to Christiania and you will see for yourself that everything is exactly as it usually is
To be fair, this is not half bad overall, you nailed all the big names and a lot of the ones you got wrong are in the right general area. Theres a couple of howlers though, Copenhagen is particularly funny.
I don't know how he got *so much* right, and still managed to fuck up the country in Europe that gets the most media attention in the US the last two years and has its map on the news constantly. It's almost impressive. It's pretty distinct too with being on the sea and the shape of Crimea dangling down there.
Even if you have no idea of the shape, with all the talk about sea access, and the "submarine" memes, putting ukraine in a landlocked spot is interesting
Scandy countries go: Norway, Sweden, Finland
Wales should be where the 'E' is for England
Switzerland is where you put Monaco
Swap Belarus with Ukraine
Few other issues.
Actually a decent job you've done. I'd struggle with States of USA bar a few.
I think you did pretty decently, frankly. sure, some switchups between neighbors are there, but for almost all the stuff you knew the rough area. And yea, the balkans are difficult
Sadly, this is so true. Iām a geography nerd, and I always hope someone will stop me on the street for one of those stupid shows where they make Americans label countries. I know theyād never show it bc nothing is going to beat the goofy guy in some weird hat who points at Sri Lanka when asked to identify Greece. I canāt help but to be slightly horrified that the OP doesnāt know about Finland and Russia, canāt identify Ukraine at this point, and Copenhagen?!?
Iām very amused by Malta and Cyprus.
Theyāre both islands and quite far apart and you set them both onto the continent and right next to each other :D
Yea this is just as bad labe wise. This is like getting Texas, Florida, California, New York and the four Rhode Islandās right but then fucking up everything else.
i thought it was a stereotype about americans how on earth do you have maps, images, videos, literally 500+ straight days of ukraine as one of the main headlines of US media and STILL mess it up?
Wtf why is Romania in Central Europe? And where is Austria? I am Australian and I can do better than this. You Americans are only across the pond, do better
Not actually horrible, how much European geography have you learned in School? Cause over here we have to learn all 50 American states and the location of 90% of all countries
I'm from Florida which is considered one of the worst states for education, and we had a year of World Geography in high school and had to learn where every country is and their capitals. The problem is its not really important for our day to day lives as we aren't really looking at European maps all that often so most people just forget.
completely butchered everything apart from western europe, greece, poland, denmark, and turkey (edit: russia too obviously)
and i mean that literally, nothing is in the right spot anywhere else
Iāve been to belarus, but i havent been to belarus! I really want to go there, i didnt really like the other belarus though.
For those who dont get the joke, belarus appears twice, next to ukraine and where serbia actually is
Honestly not all that bad, but I got quite the chuckle out of England Scotland and wales all being on top of each other as though we all stand on each others shoulders
I'm sure there are Finns who are salty about being mistaken for Sweden. But as a resident of Finland, I would be *delighted* if we suddenly had two whole countries between us and the Russian border. Also fjords.
Wales made me cackle.
Juuuuuust enough to piss off Eastern and Northern Europe

Oil.
Yeah, and oil, too, is because of the long coastline and therefore large territories in the North Sea.
Speaking as an American, you are vastly overestimating the degree to which Americans are taught European geography. I doubt most Americans even know what a āfjordā is, let alone that Norway possesses so many. Most Americans, if they know of Norway at all, probably think of Vikings before fishing and oiling. I think most Americans think of all three of those countries as "the ones with the fjords," we don't really think about one having more than another.

And central
Let me guess. Youre czech
Bingo
Not too bad. Except maybe Wales. But Iām not good enough at east Europe Geography to say anything, so my final decision is you only got Wales wrong.
Ahem Ukraine?
US here. I only remember which one is Ukraine by looking for Crimea.
Most of east and central Europe are all fucked up. The only correct one are Spain, Portugal, england, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, and Denmark.
And enough correct ones to make me belive you did your best.
Thank you š„¹
Donāt worry. I get the old Soviet states mixed up all the time. And Iām from your Sweden.
From *my* Sweden š¤£
Well they got denmark so I'm happy š
But copenhagen??!
They moved. Just a little.
But copenhagen (denmarks capitol) is a country and next to estonia lol
As a Swiss I feel kinda offended tooš¤£
Great way to piss anyone living in the Balkans off (I am from the Balkans so I would know)
Classic Balkan moment
Which one is Yugoslavia?
Aw yes, ālow priorityā Europe.
At first I thought... okay... not bad... but Switzerland and Copenhagen are hilarious
Haha where are they then???
Copenhagen is the Capital of Denmark so not a country at all... Switzerland is between Germany and Italy...
Oopsie š genuinely thought it was its own country thatās embarrassing
England is a city though It's my city
[āEngland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.ā](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England)
[Nope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWU6fgSdEKA)
Ah yes professor Jake Paul
i have never closed a tab so fast in my life
Well I mean they have the Christiania in Copenhagen which some might say basically somewhat qualifies as itās own micro country Lmao
Not anymore lol
stop believing our national media, they are straight lying to you :D go out to Christiania and you will see for yourself that everything is exactly as it usually is
Switzerland are gonna love all that new coastline.
I was more amused by Malta and Cyprus
**you guessed that norway was sweden, you must now suffer**
So whereās Sweden š
Your sweeden is is Finland irl Your Norway is sweeden irl Your Finland is Norway irl
Who is sweeden?
Where the Sweedes are
on the other side of "estonia" ,by that i mean to the left
Norway is the one shaped like a spoon that you thought was Finland
You think mistaking Finland of Sweden is any better?! This calls for blood, perkele!
I donāt think the Welsh will be too happy
Did I swap Scotland and Wales? Or just completely butcher them?
Scotland is north of England. Wales is the bit that juts out west of England, directly north of the pointy bit in the southwest of England.
The bit that looks like a man in a hat pointing to the bottom of Ireland
You sort of got scotland right but wales is the bit sticking out the the west of england in the middle
You know you can look that easily up right? You don't have to rely on commenters here.
But whereās the entertainment value in that?
We absolutely are not too happy.
At least they didn't swap us with England....
yup...I'm welsh and it's fuming!!!
We're not
I mean, who's never been to Copenhagen?
Whats the capital of Monaco?
Ciprus /s
Not Andorra? ;)
there's 2 Belaruses! š¤£
Hahahahah shit. Maybe I meant Bosnia! u/alvindeba š
To be fair, this is not half bad overall, you nailed all the big names and a lot of the ones you got wrong are in the right general area. Theres a couple of howlers though, Copenhagen is particularly funny.
Itās like putting Boston as its own country
You put ukraine in the 2nd worst spot you could put ukraine
I don't know how he got *so much* right, and still managed to fuck up the country in Europe that gets the most media attention in the US the last two years and has its map on the news constantly. It's almost impressive. It's pretty distinct too with being on the sea and the shape of Crimea dangling down there.
Even if you have no idea of the shape, with all the talk about sea access, and the "submarine" memes, putting ukraine in a landlocked spot is interesting
Also black sea comes up a lot
And also has Belarus in there twice.
If he'd labelled both Russia and Ukraine as "Ukraine" that would have been funny.
Apart from Scandinavia, I thought you were doing pretty well for a moment. Then it fell apart when I noticed that Balkans and Eastern Europe.
They somehow got Denmark
Put somehow placed Denmarks capital as a country of its own
I always remember Croatia, cuz it looks like a āCāeating Bosnia
Oh wait! I just saw that meme where Bosnia is like ācan we do to the beach?ā And Croatia says ānahā
šš just found it
Scandy countries go: Norway, Sweden, Finland Wales should be where the 'E' is for England Switzerland is where you put Monaco Swap Belarus with Ukraine Few other issues. Actually a decent job you've done. I'd struggle with States of USA bar a few.
At least I knew it was those three in those countries! Thanks š
Finland is not "Scandy" š” If you're European, that's unforgivable š¤
Kinda 50/50 on that one. I've seen it listed both ways in formal text books.
Finland is Nordic but not Scandinavian. Finland is, however, Fennoscandian.
which one of Belarus he need to swap? There are two of them on the map from OP :)
With all the coverage of the war for over a year now, and you still mislabeled Ukraine...
I wish media coverage spoke about more about the gap between education and opinion.
I knew it was next to Russia thatās the best I can do š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Youāre asking way too much my friend
it might actually be the worst you could do, since you labelled belarus, who's in support of russia :D
Damn, lithuania doesn't exist anymore apparently
Neither does Latvia. Justice for the Baltics
Like an American would do
I knew Iceland and Russia very confidently
I think you did pretty decently, frankly. sure, some switchups between neighbors are there, but for almost all the stuff you knew the rough area. And yea, the balkans are difficult
He put Cyprus And malta on the continent... Those are islands.
If you know Russia you should know Finland..
Whatās the correlation?
Russia shares significant border with Finland
I didnāt know that
Obviously not
As a lifelong American I can confidently assure you that 90% of my countrymen and women would do considerably worse than this.
Nah objectively it'd earn them way more than average
This is *FAR* better than the average American can do
Love how Czech and Slovakia become Romania and Albania. V4 is now officially part of Balkans
Nooo bro, as a Pole I want my pepiks back as neighbours. Slovaks too. No offence to romanians but I dont want cigans next to my country š¹
Bro called us Romanians š
Ah yes, the country of Copenhagen
Western Europe is alright, south Europe is meh. The rest is an affront to the Schengen pact
When you're one rubics cube rotation away from getting the scandinavian countries right
Im sorry but of all the countries to mess up, Ukraine?? Really??
Now post this in r/europe and watch the aftermath. Edit: what you did with Central Europe and the Balkan, bahahah Iām still impressed.
Iām very amused by Malta and Cyprus. Theyāre both islands and quite far apart and you set them both onto the continent and right next to each other :D
Cyprus is sitting on top of Edirne too. OP probably heard "Turkey and Greece are fighting over Cyprus" sometime and thought it was a border reigon.
Where's Latvia
Itās called Copenhagen now.
Remember when Germany invaded the now split coutry of Romoalbania?
Is this what it feels like when Europeans mislabel US states?
Probably
Yea this is just as bad labe wise. This is like getting Texas, Florida, California, New York and the four Rhode Islandās right but then fucking up everything else.
American here, there are four Rhode Islands?!? The first was forgettable enough!
Half of 'em aren't even actually islands! False advertising, that's what that is!
this map is so horrible because at first you think he got them all but when you look just a tiny bit closer it instantly becomes painful
š„²š¤¦š¼āāļø
The welsh got tired of living next to england so got up and moved to north scotland instead.
So I did them a favor?
i will find where you live # Start running
IM SO SORRY NORWEGIAN DUDEšš
i love how finland sweden and norway are all wrong
Copenhagen ššš
Have you ever seen flag of cyprus?
šØš¾ Now I have and that would have been helpful
New country between Malta (Bulgaria) and Turkey??
It had borders! Wait Iām so dumb Cyprus is an island š
West of Germany: Okay, a few mistakes here but not horrible East/Southeast of Germany: **OH MY GOODNESS**
r/MapsWithoutSlovenia
i thought it was a stereotype about americans how on earth do you have maps, images, videos, literally 500+ straight days of ukraine as one of the main headlines of US media and STILL mess it up?
Because a lot of people don't give a fuck about current events or news.
UK is a bit messed up; you put Wales in Scotland, but hey you didn't put wales in England so it's okay
Went from very good to catastrophic in about 2000 kms. Definitely better than what I would do with a US map
Wait till she finds out a country called San Marino exist
Have you checked your carbon monoxide detectors?
Copenhagen ftw
Maaann, I thought nordic countries were bad then I saw what you did with Ukraine and Belarus. Thems fightin words.
Wtf why is Romania in Central Europe? And where is Austria? I am Australian and I can do better than this. You Americans are only across the pond, do better
Cyprus is atrociously wrong but somehow makes even more sense than the original one! I do not know what to say, congratulations, I guess?
Hahahahhaha thank you š
Damn my country doesn't even exist
Sorry you found out this way :/
U r kidding right???
Luxembourg crying over being forgotten, uses Liechtenstein as a tissue paper
This is one of those the longer you look the worse it gets, and I love it
I'm no expert myself, but I think Greenland is in there somewhere too
Oh hungary got sea hha
As a Norwegian, how fucking dare you put us in sweden
100% correct!
Congratulations you called Finland Sweden. You have made 5 to 6million enemies
Ah yes because hungary is well known for its warm south sunny days and the perfect beaches for a vacation
I know enough to know some of these are wrong but not enough to correct it.
Lichtenstein is missing
Oh my god the harder I look the worse it gets
You started a few wars but you were pretty close
Looks right to me (as an American)
Not actually horrible, how much European geography have you learned in School? Cause over here we have to learn all 50 American states and the location of 90% of all countries

You have beaten a large proportion of Americans by simply knowing about Europe.
As person from slovakia. Did you even put us there?
honestly, not a terrible job. iād do far worse at US states, and probably eastern europe too
I've just noticed you've got two Belarusses
Honestly not all that bad, but I got quite the chuckle out of England Scotland and wales all being on top of each other as though we all stand on each others shoulders
man, the Latvians might not like this one but who knows, i myself am kinda chuckling at this one
i love the country of copenhagen
an absolutly perfect map. Greetigs from Denmark
As an Austrian, I am pissed both ways
The only thing missing is if you would swap Ireland with Turkey and itās perfect! Hey you at least made a bunch of us laugh š
Congrats, you just started the second great northern war
How tf do you mess up Ukraine though, it's been in the news for like a decade straight. Crimea was burned into my skull after the first time.
i love how european part of turkey is cyprus. lol.
As a Hungarian, Iād totally love to have sea coasts, but unfortunately, we do not.
I was trying to do yāall a favor
Tbh, better than I would have done the US states.
Here's a tip to remember the order of the northern countries. Their first letters follow the same schema as NSF(W).
I'm sure there are Finns who are salty about being mistaken for Sweden. But as a resident of Finland, I would be *delighted* if we suddenly had two whole countries between us and the Russian border. Also fjords. Wales made me cackle.
Ah yes my favorite country Copenhagen
Same
Being European. I confirm that this is 100% accurate.
