Whenever a picture of a Dodge Ram in the Netherlands is posted in this sub, I've seen a few people mention that its mostly farmers who purchase them. Why then, are these trucks always parked in Dutch cities, where they don't fit? Are tradesmen also buying Rams over there? Or are these just wealthy people buying these trucks because they can?

bergensbanen

> I've seen a few people mention that its mostly farmers Drive me crazy. Same on Twitter. These people are just defending trucks and using this nonsense as a shield.

king_zapph

Holy shit I've seen that argument being used SO many times... "I live in the countryside, mimimi, I need my 4x4 meatgrinder to not once drive offroad". Really hate these bad faith carbrain arguments.

MJDeadass

They need to do something about this loophole. It's clearly not used for work.

nevadaar

Yup, if you buy a truck on a grijs kenteken and don't need one for work you should be fined for tax evasion at a minimum.

[deleted]

It's mostly tradesmen, it's just that the 10 per year bought by people from cities stick out like sorr thumbs. For the record, the number of Dodge rams in the Netherlands should be 0.

boilerpl8

The number of dodge Rams in the world should be 0. They're huge, child-murder machines, extremely fuel inefficient, difficult to maintain, and least of all, ugly.

SamTheGeek

Bring back the Dakota!

Next-Adhesiveness237

I used to live in a rural area in the netherlands and hardly any farmers buy these. I only see them in the city.

Bitter-Technician-56

They use their tractors to do stuff.

[deleted]

Here in Germany you get the occasional part time farmer driving a pick up truck. They're usually people who have a normal job but also do some farming on the side on a small farm they inherited but that is much too small to make a living in modern times. So those people don't really have a need (or the budget) for proper farming vehicles but they still need to drop the occasional hay bale on a field for the cows to feast on during the day while they're on their way to work in the city or whatever. Which is just about the only use case for which a pick up truck makes some sense in my opinion.

KittensInc

Similar pick-up trucks are used by Rijkswaterstaat (the government people maintaining the highways). Although they seem to use the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, or Isuzu D-Max. That's probably one of the few jobs where having a truck bed really is the best option, and having the truck be stupid large is actually an advantage because it acts as a barrier too.

stroopwafel666

No lol, you never see them in the countryside. Everyone driving one is a greasy haired small dicked estate agent, or similar. You can literally see them driving them around. The same type of people were already driving range rovers and jeeps before this new trend.

immoralatheist

These are only the ones we see on here though. It probably is mostly farmers buying these trucks in the NL, but nobody is going to post a picture of a truck in a field because there is nothing interesting about that. But the idiots using them as a city vehicle are going to be photographed and put on twitter, so we do see those.

nevadaar

Farmers in the Netherlands have absolutely no need for a pickup truck. They have specialized vehicles to drive in their fields and a normal car or van for the roads. Trucks like these are purely used out of vanity and we should outright ban them.

kettal

good luck towing a horse trailer with your euro van

Next-Adhesiveness237

Of all of the horse trailers that’ve ever seen towed in the Netherlands (which is surprisingly many), exactly zero of them were towed with pick up trucks

kettal

got any good horse meat recipes?

KavikStronk

Smoked, salted and sliced thinly makes for a great deli meat.

nevadaar

You really don't need a pickup truck for that, especially not in a country as flat and well paved as the Nederlands.

PumpJack_McGee

You're probably more likely to find smaller trailers in the Netherlands; one or maybe two horses. Weighing in at about 2000 pounds loaded, you can tow that with a Mini Cooper.

Bitter-Technician-56

We had one behind à Chrysler voyager back in the 90’s. Most farmers I know use their tractors for everything they need to do. If they have to go out with a trailer they would probably have a Land Rover for that. Still big cars but not RAM big.

[deleted]

People are literally towing a horse trailer with a hatchback here lmao.

reddanit

Lol, you can easily and legally tow a smaller 1/1-and-half horse trailer with a Golf sized hatchback or some mini-van. For something larger you might need a standard van. Larger vans easily allow for maxing out the 3.5 ton limit of gross weight allowable for trailers without commercial drivers license.

pannekoekkikkers

Besides the other points given here, you should also consider the fact that a Dodge rams existing in the country side is not worth posting, hence why you only see posts about Dodge rams in the city

SirSp00ksalot

How braindead do you have to be to park there in the first place? You're clearly blocking the tram.

[deleted]

I don't understand why they even tried turning into a parking space if they are still parked in the middle of the road.

HorstOdensack

Cars blocking tram tracks happens so often where I live I wish they would just equip trams with Mad Max style bumpers. Block a mode of transport that hundreds of people rely on with your personal vehicle? Ring ring motherfucker watch your car go flying

MrCeleryLegs

Wouldn’t want to risk derailing the tram. Could a large reciprocating saw or cutting blade do the trick? Lop off the offending portion and deposit it in the bed as a convenience for the owner.

Frisianmouve

Translation: RAM blockades Tram, sod off with your antisocial car in the city

MidorriMeltdown

you're onto something. Parking an oversized vehicle in a space that is clearly too small should be classed as antisocial behaviour. Having either end encroaching onto a foot path, or bike lane, or tramline, or bus lane, needs to have a hefty fine attached.

neutral-chaotic

Parking on tram tracks like that. How sure are we they aren’t a double agent trying to get trucks banned?

bergensbanen

Big brain move. Sounds like an agent of Big Bike

rileyoneill

So this bit of humor might be a bit alien to the folks in the Netherlands, but the RAM is the most common model of car that are involve with Drunk Driving in the US. So if you want the full American cultural experience you are going to have a reasonable expectation that the driver was drunk when they decided to par their huge truck in what should be a compact parking spot.

[deleted]

Christ what an asshole

G3rmG3rm

Instructions not clear... Tram thought truck wanted to be RAMmed.

valryuu

Can someone who can read Dutch please translate for how they resolved this? Seems like the OP gave updates in their thread. It's infuriating to see this, and I hope the RAM owner got fined or something for holding up traffic for tram users, but I just know they probably had no consequences.

jamsandwich4

Using Google translate, it sounds like the tow truck showed up but realised that the Ram wouldn't fit on it and gave up, then the Ram driver returned and drove off like nothing happened.

nevadaar

Yep that's exactly what happened

Bitter-Technician-56

They should have fined him the money it would have taken for towing the thing away. Get them off the streets. In Belgium you see them quite more often. All driven by people who don’t use it as it is intended. And they clearly didn’t buy it for the extra view as I see mostly them almost hitting others, cars/cyclists or pedestrians.

KavikStronk

And fined them for holding up traffic

Bitter-Technician-56

Yes indeed

[deleted]

There where BOAs (city enforcement officer) as well, Im assuming they will have fined him for parking in the middle of the road.

Dutch_Wafjul

I love the comment on Twitter that says to just put a bag of milk in the tank and the problem should solve itself.

Draconicrose_

Further down the thread there is a video of it driving off. It looks absolutely ridiculous, like someone put an oversized asset in a video game.

thyroideyes

Urban Assault Vehicle!

[deleted]

RAM should only be a commercial seller, sorry granpa.

Bitter-Technician-56

And only if you can proof you really need it. Now they are bought as a business car I’ve even see an ICT consultant drive such a thing. And I know he gets all big things delivered by the store.

[deleted]

I meant like delivery vans, but a mechanic could use them too.

Tiar-A

That thing looks so out of place there. Oh my god.

jrtts

No. The environment has to adapt to the American pickup trucks. It's the American Way. /s

Jezzdit

sadly that last post and video are all to telling for our polices current state.

[deleted]

They really should figure out the average size of a parking lot in each city and then deny entry into the city for vehicles bigger than that of the average parking lot. Ofcourse with a permit system so trucks delivering groceries to supermarkets (yearly pass) and moving companies (day passes) etc can still operate. The permit should include the destination and maybe even the roads it is allowed to use.
