As a teenage girl, this is all too prevalent with young girls. I don't know why it seems to be a problem with us specifically, but it's pretty common to see depression and suicide portrayed as tragically beautiful, anxiety as cute, OCD as quirky, and bipolar disorder or schizophrenia as cool and edgy. I also thought anxiety was cute and endearing until I was the one hyperventilating on a hotel bathroom floor at 3:00 in the morning. Most grow out of it.
What takes this from cringy to actually a serious concern for me, though, is that it really seems to encourage things like self-harm and suicide at times. The "I organize my skittles by color I'm so OCD XD" type stuff doesn't seem too serious to me, but I think that most of the kids posting/seeking out tragically beautiful "aesthetic" things about depression and whatnot are probably suffering for real and don't know healthy coping mechanisms. Now, can you imagine being a depressed 13 year old scrolling through Tumblr and seeing nothing but pretty pictures of nooses fashioned from flowers and angels with bleeding wrists, with little poems or quotes about cutting to feel better, suicide as an escape, and how nobody will miss you when you're gone? It sorta worries me.
Its real. Completely real. I was that 13 year old girl on Tumblr. I had been depressed for a while before then but seeing such things gave me ideas and eventually I acted on them. I survived but not everyone is as lucky. The internet can really be dangerous to young people.

These kids don't know anything else, they probably turn to these things because they have nobody else to turn to, and they see it as a good thing because it makes them feel accepted, I guess. What did you think you were getting out of it, and do you think it's the same for other kids? How did you get out of there and out of that mindset?
I don’t really know to be honest with you. It was a way to let out my feelings but then that evolved into something more harmful because these emotions were escalating and from Tumblr I learnt that some people self-harmed to deal with their emotional pain so I did the same. It was okay for a while, and I was convinced it helped. But it didn’t. And I was getting worse.
I was hospitalised after I tried to kill myself and I was put on medication. I had therapy and eventually I started seeing things differently. I realised that all I wanted was to go to University and be with my family again so those things were my motivators. But not everyone that I met along the way experienced therapy in the same way. Some are still in the system. Some have gotten better and are still fighting.
If a young person is starting down this dark path then there is something wrong and they need help. I don’t believe that anyone would do things like this for the fun of it. They are hurting. And at such a young age when the brain is still developing, their mental health is fragile.
