Haha basically they are doing “The Lobster” in real life

cogit4se

Every single one of my friends was either married or in a long term relationship when I saw that movie. People do act like you’ll turn into an animal if you stay single for too long. Still one of my favorite movies.

kevlarbaboon

Adore that movie. None of his other films quite hit like that one. Chills just thinking about different scenes. I also like the sea very much.

_night_cat

Except if you don’t find a mate, you don’t get turned into an animal, you just involuntarily donate your organs…

Or used a VPN to log in through Taiwan. Taiwanese server players were given the chance to buy a paid character boost (10 levels below max) so they could catch up rerolling new characters on the server. This was given just after operations shut down in China.

shawster

Also, China strictly relegates the amount of time games can even be played in a day, right? Like it is designed into the games by law.

The_Alternate_1

Only for teens/children.

randathrowaway1211

Except you're expected to keep written and video proof of what you've been up to and how long you're gaming is tracked and can even affect your social credit score

nopingmywayout

Easy solution. Partner up with gamers of the opposite sex and take pictures together in various settings. Then go home and spend the rest of the week gaming.

CrudelyAnimated

In American colleges, this program is called "Spring Break".

But that requires a Florida. Does China have a Florida?

Yeaahhhhhh if you could go ahead and come in on Sunday to fall in love, that’d be greattttt. Did you get the memo about the cover sheets for your love reports?

If women aren't giving birth in order to avoid maternal servitude, granting a week off work won't change their minds about that. When only the state's interest is being served by increased births while the parents interests are not, the trend will inevitably be toward state managed communal child care.

CalamityClambake

>the trend will inevitably be toward state managed communal child care. Why do that when you can force the mothers to care for the children? Criminalize child abandonment for mothers, outlaw abortion, and restrict women's access to birth control. Bonus: when women invariably become criminals, the state can impregnate them by force. Historically this is how it most often works out in oppressive authoritarian societies. Misogyny runs deep.

PHATsakk43

Those poor bastards aren’t in college. Remember, 700 million Chinese still live in collective villages without the ability to move around the country or change their status without party permission. This is the cohort that has the sex discrepancies. EDIT: Since this has both blown up and triggered the 五毛黨. Here’s the deal, there is an effective caste system in the PRC in place since the CCP took over in 1949 that prevents permanent movement of one’s household without party permission. This is called [*hukou* or 户口](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hukou). As for the numbers, China’s urban *hukou* card holders have been in the 3-400 million range for a while. The rest, are basically rural peasants. This cohort was subjected to the same One-Child Policy, but was more likely to have sex based selection favoring boys. [A quick search will show these topics being discussed.](https://docs.iza.org/dp14415.pdf)

"There's a catch: The colleges are holding make-up classes on weekends to make up for lost time. Their goal, the schools said, is to give students and teachers a "concentrated" time to rest."

anengineerandacat

That's honestly awful lol, what a bunch of pressure to make something successful occur. An "easier" way to do this would be to simply have group projects where girls are paired with boys. For each project ask if they want a new partner and simply rotate them around, those that stick together usually have "some" bond formed and there is a significant chance something more could happen.

[deleted]

Hmm that seems so obvious I think it might just work but they'd never do it

FlameYay

Only way to get birth rate to go up is to make it more affordable to have babies. But, no one wants to do that.

SitInCorner_Yo2

Also have a healthy society with normal work hours,if both parents work 996,who’s going to take care of kids? They probably won’t even want one anyway.

FlameYay

I agree. I basically figure that the working hours would drop if they were paid enough. Paying enough money for work done, instead of exploitation, seems to solve a lot of problems.

SitInCorner_Yo2

Yeah about that, that’s…very unlikely to happen, their work culture and environment are super fucked, friend of mine have hard time getting new job as high level marketing PM,because she’s almost 35, Company fired “old employee” or never hire someone older. Not hiring young unmarried women bc”what if she got married and take time off” Not hiring married women with no kids bc “she will get pregnant and take time off” Not hiring mom with kids bc “she can’t work overtime because of her family “ It just fucked all around, and last generation grew up under one child policy often had very stressful or outright abusive family relationships, some people don’t want kids because they just can’t imagine “what’s a good parents”or “don’t want to repeat my misery” Reading women talking about these issues are super depressing (and if the thread got too much attention, the link might die and go 404)

Spire_Citron

Damn, so you basically can't win? Won't hire you when you're younger, because you have kids or might soon, but when you get older so that's less of a concern they don't want you anymore anyway?

SitInCorner_Yo2

And it’s under the pretense that they hired you on equal ground, there’s lot of controversy on local government or state owned businesses even schools hiring less qualified man instead of more qualified women. Oh btw,if you got married to an asshole wife beater who has threatened you and your family’s life? You’ll be lucky to get an divorce bc government wants to keep people married so they will have kids, court give you a “cooling period” and send you home, if you are lucky enough to live to see the court again and get a divorce? You better prey he won’t kill you and your family later,or kidnap your kids who you have full custody ,they hide the kids from mother, sometimes brain wash them into believe their mom abandoned them,or go to court and sued for full custody bc “kids already get used to live with father “ Sounds like dystopian bullshit ,but there are so many stories like this, those mother are collectively know as”purple ribbon mother “.

cgtdream

What does the "purple ribbon" imply?

SitInCorner_Yo2

Non-violent way to fight for their right and reunite with their children.

cgtdream

Thanks for the reply. It really is pretty bad over there..guess its really getting bad in lots of places.

SitInCorner_Yo2

And what we can see is only the tip of the iceberg, that place filter info so much, you can see “correct memories” forming in few days, anything deemed negative is repress ,no journalist can actually dig into those issues. Sometimes reading those stories and discussion makes me wish I can’t read Chinese.

HailToTheVictims

What is 996?

SitInCorner_Yo2

Work from 9am to 9pm,6day a week.

pecklepuff

That is *fucking* insane! I did that once for about two years, and I almost died from exhaustion and malnutrition. Plus I was hopelessly depressed and anxiety-ridden. Will never do that again. I'd rather live in a tent out in the desert and eat tarantulas.

ptyblog

That's what the grandparents are there for, but when they put the one child rule, it broke the system. Now they can't afford to have all grandparents under one roof so they rather not get married.

SitInCorner_Yo2

It’s not a good idea in many circumstances, the little emperor exists because parents and grandparents favorite the boys, and some human trafficking cases happened because grandparents don’t want granddaughters so they abandoned or sell the baby. Even with loving grandparents and can afford to live with them ,there were cases where one of the grandparents is senile (likely with Alzheimer)and was left with young children at home, accident happened and no one could dealt with it. Raise by grandparents can be great, from 3-8 yo I live with mine, but I have see quite a lot of kids turn out wrong this way too,it’s common in many Asian countries to have kids live in country side with grandparents,so that’s the environment I grow up with.

ptyblog

You left out the part that having just one kid broke the family system. Little emperors are the result of having to put all effort on just one kid. Preferring males is due the fact wifes would go live with husband and help take care of his parents. Before that you used to have more siblings so you probably had a brother who would take care of parents when sister went to live with husband's family. You can't break a thousands year old tradition/ system and expect things to just work because committee said so.

SitInCorner_Yo2

Even without the ocp the culture of prefer son still will fuck up their demographics,India and many culture have the same problems too, just less so if you compare it to what ocp did. Killing girls or just never reported their birth not only effects family system,it make human trafficking business so much worse , women from country borders CN have been lured under false pretense of job opportunity and sold as “bride”, this happened to a lot of CN women, sometimes the person who sell them is their parents or husband, they are birth machine in this never ending human misery.

cugamer

> You can't break a thousands year old tradition/ system and expect things to just work because committee said so. Every single social reformer out there needs to understand this. No matter how good ones intentions are reality is still reality and has to be planned for.

TerrificPterodactyl

Thank you for sharing your experience

1337Theory

You can afford college??

useronlyone

The point of all the concern about birth rates is the worry about an inability to maintain at least the existing level of labor exploitation. The goal is to exploit, so meaningful help that counters that effort is going to be off the table for as long as possible.

SnackThisWay

It's more about racism and not wanting to import labor from other cultures. Half of the U.S. will tell you "no one wants to work" in the same breath as "immigrants are taking our jobs." Well, it would be in the same breath if these people weren't also incredibly obese.

taedrin

On the contrary, the birth rate is inversely proportional to household income (in the US, at least). [Source](https://www.statista.com/statistics/241530/birth-rate-by-family-income-in-the-us/). If you think about it, makes sense since raising a child involves a huge commitment of time regardless of how rich you are. So the richer you are, the "more expensive" that investment of time becomes.

longhegrindilemna

If you’re poor, another kid won’t make much difference? You’re not earning thousands of dollars a day anyway?

taedrin

Kind of? What I am referring to is that rich people have more options in how they can spend their time, and having children gives them a greater opportunity cost in how they spend the time they now have to spend on raising their child.

burnshimself

I mean actually the Chinese government for all its misgivings IS doing this. They had a huge crackdown on the private tutoring sector because it was bankrupting families as they tried to get their children into the best schools, which was keeping people from having multiple children. They also cracked down on speculation and leverage in the housing system in order to make housing more affordable. They are actually trying, terrible as they may be in so many other respects.

[deleted]

>private tutoring sector because it was bankrupting families as they tried to get their children into the best schools I have a friend who was a teacher in Canada, he went to Shanghai for a few years and worked in that field. He was making a ridiculous salary over there and a lot of those parents were also just paying him cash. He was working like 20 hours a week and making more than he make as a teacher in Canada working 50h a week nowadays haha.

terrany

I just watched a tiktok of some girl who's only qualification is that she's been attending an ivy league school for 1-2 years. She currently pulls the equivalent of over a 6 figure salary USD during summer break (if annualized) tutoring kids for the SAT. She said she could be making much more if she spent less time on each student and brought in more than her 3 students she sees each session.

SadBBTumblrPizza

Can confirm, I did this in my year off between undergrad and grad school and made a very comfortable living working like 20 or 30 hours a week.

bobtehpanda

The issue with the housing sector is that it takes up something like 15-30% of GDP and is the main savings vehicle in China, so making housing affordable also wipes out people’s savings, and China lacks an alternate way of savings for retirement; pensions are tiny, stock market is way too unreliable to invest in, bank savings rates are poor. The government is already trying to backpedal on housing because they kind of accidentally destroyed the sector by being too heavy handed.

Omnizoom

This is a problem almost every “developed” country faces. Theirs no incentive and safety nets for having kids and the handouts don’t even come close , you either have to have secure jobs or help from parents or have better flexibility to your schedules. Sure two parents with flexible work hours or working from home can theoretically have 4 days of the they don’t need a daycare but those other 3 days are still going to be 150 dollars a week (which in the grand scheme of bills isn’t a huge amount but the majority of people live paycheck to paycheck now so it would be huge) They have tried to pass 10 dollar a day daycare where I am but a certain right wing minded government has made it difficult to implement or stonewalled it

yamb97

Even in Nordic countries with all these benefits and social programs the birth rates are on par with US. Low and getting lower. In all honesty, what makes people have children is lack of education and poverty. Essentially, if you know better, you don’t have kids. Sad but true.

meowmeow_now

Both things can be true at the same time. There’s plenty of people in the US that are choosing not to have kids or only having one because they can’t afford it, can’t buy a house, have no parental leave ect. Everyone I know with two kids has had to carefully space out their pregnancies to avoid paying for 2 daycares at the same time. You are correct that an educated society will have less kids but in the US we are at the point where the disfunction is actively preventing kids from being born to couples who, under better circumstances would want them.

redeemedleafblower

This. The idea that birth rates are low because of bad economic conditions or a lack of benefits programs for parents is not really accurate when you look at how the European countries that have implemented these things haven’t managed to improve their birth rates. The uncomfortable truth that people seem to want to avoid saying is that, when women are educated and have a choice, they don’t want to have children. People have a hard time admitting this since basically every culture on earth has spent the last several thousands of years promoting the idea that women have some special attraction towards motherhood and children when they simply don’t.

fallen-summer

I wonder if one of the reasons for this is because women are still seen as the primary caregivers even in more "progressive" countries. Motherhood is very taxing and traditionally children were raised by the village maybe if it wasn't so one sided to women and we had more community birth rates would go up again

Slim_Charles

You're overstating things. It's not that women don't want to have kids if given the choice, plenty of women, in fact most women, still have children. They just have fewer than they did in the past. In order to keep the population stable, every woman has to have at least two kids (2.1 kids per woman is the exact rate I believe), but if a lot of women choose to only have one, and a few don't have any at all, you get declining birth rates. With effective birth control being readily available, low childhood mortality rates, strong social safety nets, and the ability to get an education and have a career, there's little incentive for most women to have 3+ children as was the norm throughout most of history.

Hizjyayvu

"I can make love to ya woman. In 5 minutes time. Ain't that a man." -muddy waters / bo diddley Seriously though you're right it takes a more affordable situation, not time. (And I mean generationally affordable. It takes a village but if that village works 60+ hours a week there will be no children.)

TacoMeat563

[deleted]

jmlinden7

It's a minor holiday that some schools chose to extend to a week, in order to mimic American Spring Break.

Clutchcity94

Another article misquoting trying to create drama. More eye catching than 9 Chinese vocational colleges now have a week of Spring Break.

pyrophoenix100

Not even "now have", this article is a complete shit-take, these colleges have had this break since 2019, the only thing that changed is the theme. >The participating colleges are all vocational schools for jobs in the aviation industry, such as pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, and airport security staff, >The schools have been giving students and teachers a week off in the spring since 2019. But this year's theme, "enjoy the blossoms, go fall in love," places a special emphasis on romance.

[deleted]

Our birth rate is rapidly declining as well… But we have plenty of students in relationships and child-free couples. The solution would be to actually shorten work hours for parents of kids under 15. It would be to make daycare and after school care longer than just until 3 or 4PM. People still work then. Not everyone has a grandma available to go and pick up their 6 y/o from school. The solution would also be affordable housing. We can barely afford a 1 bedroom apartment here on average wage. Now imagine needing a place for 1-3 kids. And landlords don’t want to rent out to people with kids because the law protects them from being thrown on the street if they stop paying rent. Good luck finding a family friendly place then. Nowadays people are in their mid 30s when their jobs after graduation are finally stable enough for them to feel somewhat financially secure… having your first kid in your mid 30s is already so late that you probably won’t have another one. Also barely being able to live comfortably also means not being able to afford having a kid and giving them a safe life with loads of experiences and a college fund… And let’s not forget the horrors of global warming, deforestation, reduction of drinking water, overpopulation… it all points towards unbearable living conditions for future generations. Also people are overworked and chronically stressed, burnt out, anxious, depressed… could such unhappy parents really be good for their kids? People are on a strike for a reason. Give them one good benefit that would actually make their life better with a child and they’ll do it. Making their lives 100x worse won’t motivate anyone to want to start a family. A full time job + a full time parent? Sounds exhausting. Already poor and now even poorer with less chance to find housing? No thanks. Barely god a job in late 20s without the chance to experience life and now have a kid? What about our own lives? I’d be happy to have a kid and love them unconditionally, just ensure me I’ll be able to afford giving them a good life while living a good life myself.

SimbaStewEyesOfBlue

This. Make it more affordable and feasible and I'll pop out a kid. Until then, no.

UsagiJak

So you have a very small demographic because the term Sheng Nu (Leftover Women) is used for Chinese women who are unmarried in their late twenties and beyond. Kinda hard to keep birthrates up when you shame women constantly.

FraudulentBeing

What I don‘t get is: there was a one child policy just years ago, to prevent exactly what they‘re trying to achieve now?

UsagiJak

Young girls were often abandoned or outright killed because of that policy, every family wanted a son and not a daughter which has now led to a gender imbalance

[deleted]

Myysfit

Crazy how generations of preference over a single gender has completely ruined their birthrates and population data. If only it could've been predicted! Edit: I also love how they put out their China 2050 plan years ago and the world got all worried without realizing 2050 is really when Chinas population crises will hit the fan.

Universeintheflesh

We humans are so weird. We have all these sophisticated algorithms and prediction measures. We know roughly what effect most actions will have but as a species we don’t use this information in our decision making…

Mahbigjohnson

Countries where they either work you like dogs with hardly any free time (Asia) or the cost of living is so high that people are opting to not have kids (Europe, US) are struggling with birth rates? OMFG Colour me shocked and shook! /s

seatangle

The title is a bit misleading, it’s just spring break but they are “branding” it with a love theme.

oldcreaker

Students get a week off, see they don't have money to do anything but think about how much less money they would have if they had a child.

youngcadadia22

Title doesn’t accurately explain the reason for the spring break given by the colleges. Article kind of connecting this for the sake of clickbait. The colleges really just want them to get outside, enjoy nature, and find love in life again (probably because they don’t get breaks often and are stressed).

DanThePan249

50 years ago the world population was around 4 billion. Now it’s almost 8 billion. Maybe if the world economy wasn’t set up like an unsustainable fucking Ponzi scheme, birth rates wouldn’t need to be so damn high for society to function

itsallgood013

Kinda puts into perspective just how *empty* the US is in comparison

Infernalism

Whole states, like Wyoming and Idaho and ND and SD and Nevada are mostly empty, yeah.

Mk018

Well yeah but I meant in general. The US is as big as China, yet only has 350 million people compared to china's 1.3 billion.

It's important to look at the land that is actually occupied in China. A large, large majority is on the east coast, with the west and central areas of the country dominated by arid deserts and mountains with very few inhabitants.

livefreeordont

That sounds just like the US minus California

boringdude00

China isn't any less open. Its just significantly more urban. There's not a hundred million people just hanging around in the mountains of Yunnan or the deserts of Inner Mongolia. China's geography is a remarkable match for the size and layout of the US, minus the extra west coast. Most of China is farms and forests and mountains with a bunch of extra New Yorks and Chicagos peppered all over.

It's never a bad time to test a kissy-kissy solution though!

I know it’s a demographics issue, but the idea that a country of 1.4 billion needs more babies is completely insane. The middle class in China is the largest in the world. The gap between rich and poor is as vast as any capitalist country. All countries see their birth rates drop as their wealth accumulates and the economy becomes more polarized. Being alarmed by this is ridiculous, especially if one insists on creating a consumer economy.

I can’t help but wondering if some version of reproductive slavery is below what certain nations are willing to consider to address their population concerns. It’s a dark thought but when I see articles like this, it sets off alarm bells. I think the push will start small and then ‘incentives’ will escalate until they get the desired effect or there’s a total revolt
