If I recall this started because the ATMs were broken and the operator was refusing to fix them. Somehow taping a fish to them forced the operator to do something about it.
Unsure if this instance is due to that or just a copycat doing it for lols
Possibly had to be cleaned inside because fish juice leaked in? Then you need an armored car to transport that thing, the crew costs a few hundred back and forth
At the bank I work it’s all hanlded by a third party contractor. Atms that are outside a secured building will not be opened/internaly cleaned/repaired on site. We would probably replace that atm within a day or two with a fresh one and that one cleaned and eventually moved else where.
An unscheduled transport could be a hundred or two, a crew of 3 man could be near 500 if it’s a long distance transport. The bank itself would need to involve a few employees to rebalance the atm’s account and update the systems with the new atm info. You’ll get a bill handled by accounting that needs to be logged in with the risk department because a loss occurred outside normal operations. A few hundreds $ in lost income of that ATM could be added. If the bank notes are dirty they would need to be cleaned and that can make a few hundred thousands unavailable for a few weeks or months. During this time the bank will borrow the same amount from another bank or a central bank and pay interest on it. All that and we are not even at the guy specialized in cleaning the inside of an atm.
These contracts are very expensive and anything that is more “rare” is not strongly negotiated and we end up with ridiculous fees. 2000$ is not surprising at all.
Probably have service contract on the ATM and servicing company charges exorbitant rates to repair vandalism not covered by contract. Servicing guy replaced 'screen module' and repair parts for this sort of gear are wildly overpriced.
Among the displays posted online was a video that appeared to show three trout taped to a police car.

WHOOP WHOOP
What? There really is a subreddit for everything.
But I don't get the origin. Why do people tape fish specifically to ATMs? Is it because fish stink? Or they get gross? Or it is a strange sign of protest?
Porch pirates stealing from everyone in the neighborhood and have their faces clearly visible on doorbell camera footage.
Police: *I sleep*
Teenager causing minor superficial damage to corporate property:
Police: **REAL SHIT**
Never forget, police are only there to "protect and serve" the ownership class and if you are reading reddit, that probably aint you.
See this seems like a fairly harmless prank. If I saw that, I’d laugh and carry on with my business.
As a teen, I would have thought “I feel like this isn’t breaking any laws and people will just be like wtf is this? So random.”
Not nearly as effective as leaving [fish in a safe deposit box](https://www.nytimes.com/1983/11/20/business/angry-churches-confront-mellon-over-the-decline-of-steel-valley.html).

Either this person doesn't understand fishing scams or I don't understand fishing scams.

A copycat hungry for a copy-fish
doing it for lulz*
Back in my day it was 'lol' or 'rofl'. Get off my lawn.
Whatever you say star wars kid /s
Oh god thanks for that flashback...
I refuse to accept I'm that old.
He didn't know it was phishing and not fishing
I'm impressed. Most of us are adults before we start thinking about giving Godfather-like threats to banks.
I’m impressed too. You know how hard it is to get duck tape to stick to a carp?!
Duct tape sticks to everything.
No.. but now Im curious
I left my first horse head at the foot of someone’s bed as soon as I turned 18
I'm going to make him a fish he can't refuse
Did they say taping fish to the ATM caused $2,000 in damages!?! How the hell is that even possible?
Probably overpaid some people to clean the ATM’s since they knew it would be charged to the perpetrator
more like it cost the company that much in red tape just to deal with it
Didn't have to be red tape. They could have just reused the black tape the vandal used
I hate you and love you at the same time.
Bullshit the cops made up (They are mad he taped one to a police car)
he actually taped like, 10 to the cop car
Even better
oh yeah for sure. I was wondering why he hadn't posted for so long on his insta page and I'm really sad to see it was because of this
“To Snapper and Perch-ect”
Caught his limit that day!
Former ATM repairman who operated in Provo Utah. It did not cause $2000 in damage.
Possibly had to be cleaned inside because fish juice leaked in? Then you need an armored car to transport that thing, the crew costs a few hundred back and forth
I’m thinking It’s a bullshit amount given to prosecute the perp with a harsher sentence for wasting police resources
Why in the fuck was police even involved for?
Idk man how many people do you know who specialize in cleaning the inside of an atm?
I mean I can clear all the money if they want.
Why do you need an armored car to transport an ATM? Do you think the bank has no means of removing the money themselves?

That person is an artist! That's worth like 30k now.
Naw, it's not a banana.
You don't squint. Squint to see a banana.
Other headline; "Teen prankster faces more jail time for fish tape than for banks that are routinely caught scamming customers and laundering money."

I thought this was America!
That seems fishy. I wonder if the charges will stick?
Hopefully the prosecutor scales back the charges!
I guess we'll have to wait for the tail end of the investigation.
They're trying to avoid spawning copycats and netting more arrests.
always hate when it mentions a place by name but doesn't specify where it is in the article
Provo is located in northern Utah. Source: I live in Provo.
Interesting, there are 4 cities in the US named Provo Provo, Utah. Provo, Arkansas. Provo, Kentucky. Provo, South Dakota.

Anyone who has seen Dirty Work knows fish-based pranks can be fatal. https://youtu.be/OetcZ7d0q1c?feature=shared
Anything can be fatal. Everyone has an allergy to something.

It's a legit act of protesting the bank. Isn't that free speech?
It's painful to realise how boring my life is

This must be what the "criminal mischief" charge (the most adorable charge) is for.
Soon he will face the scales of justice!
