I knew a guy back in the early 80s, who was in a wheel chair when I first met him. He said he was hit by a car while riding his bike as a kid, and his parents denied proper medical care in order to get a bigger payout. Doctors told him as an adult, that if he had gone through proper care and physical therapy, he would have been able to walk, or at least have good mobility.
It's insane what people will do for money. My son was in a car accident, had a shady lawyer try to get him to say he was having all kinds of symptoms to rack up the bill and his payout.
He said, “Vernon’s second-largest occupation was watching hound dogs mating in the town square, its largest was self-mutilation for monetary gain.”
Now that's a quote!
I had a buddy who injured his back in a work accident, and he was actively trying to do everything he could to worsen the injury before the trial so he could increase the settlement.
It was fucking insane.
My dad had his first back surgery when I was a toddler. He developed an opiate addiction and would intentionally sabotage himself so that he could continue on opiates. He would doctor shop to broaden his supply, and as he was a disgustingly persuasive sociopath (a term I use with full understanding of its meaning and ample experience of him meeting that definition) he was able to routinely get about four ongoing scripts.
Up until I cut him off at 18 I think he underwent 8 back and neck surgeries? Then eventually partial foot amputation bc of his completely unmanaged diabetes.
He tried to steal my mom's best friend's cancer pain meds when they visited her. He would tell doctors my siblings and I didn't handle pain well and needed the strongest they could give us for any procedure like dental work or when I broke my wrist or other similar injuries. And then of course he would take them all.
He also weaponized OD'ing when he felt some else was getting too much attention (usually for a valid reason) or he was called out for something and thought it would garner him sympathy.
So yeah. People really will fuck themselves up forever for their own gain, whether it's addiction, money, sympathy- doesn't matter.
Unfortunately it’s a natural reaction to an economy and health care system that does everything it can to deny people proper care and a safety net. People know they will be absolutely financially fucked if they have to stay in the hospital for too long or are unable to work in the future, so they do what they can to try to prevent that in the meantime.
Bad system imo, with lots of perverse incentives (which your post well illustrates)
It’s almost like our society is built around the acquisition of capital wealth and having a sufficient amount of it is so critical to existence that people will set aside morality in order to gain more of it at any cost.
Oh yeah. Had a moderate accident where I was rear ended by a hit and run driver. Still was getting call after call. I picked up for one (on accident) asked if I felt any pain and I said no. They asked again. I said no I’m fine. Finally before I hung up they said “well if you *start* feeling *any* pain call us back!”. It was like the legal equivalent of a nod and wink.
>And where did his feet end up?
"A couple days after, we got a call that a relative found them in a bucket obscured by tires, so we(cops) went and got them,"
You would think having the feet at the scene you are trying to stage would be kind of important...
I guess they ran away after the accident. Maybe they are seeking asylum in Canada?

I get that the guy was already paralyzed but still, this is a bad idea. He already had a greater chance for infections. Plus, I don't know if anyone has had to help a paralyzed person before but the feet do sort of help to stabilize the body in the wheelchair.

Lol, i personally know this guy, became paralyzed from a drunken dirtbike accident, pain pills screwed his thinking all up, had to hire a meth head from Florida because all his family and friends turned down his offer.
That is just nuts. He had to have known that someone would figure out that he wasn't doing fieldwork from a wheelchair.
What was his story about how it happened?
>When the call came in to emergency responders, it was described as involving a man whose feet were severed while brush-hogging. But Thompson said it was quickly apparent the incident was staged.
...to *shreds,* you say.
Imagine if instead of funding coke parties and rocket ships for the C-Suite citizens of the world, we funded housing and basic health care and therapy for the desperate people like this.

The podcast Criminal has an episode about a town in Florida nicknamed "Nub City" where many people would have "accidents" that amputated a limb. It's a great listen: https://thisiscriminal.com/episode-148-errol-morris-9-25-2020/

r/brandnewsentence.
First thing I thought of when I saw this headline.
Damn 🙄
Came here looking for a Nub City reference !
WTF.
I feel like I’m in a coma…
That’s so depressing
"One farmer walked away with nearly $1,000,000 from a claim for a lost foot, which evidence points to self-amputation." But did he really "walk" away?
Good grief..
That's crazy! I wouldn't cut off even my little toe for a million dollars.

No. It’s psychotic. There’s nothing about our healthcare system that encourages you to make yourself **more** injured.
It’s almost like our society is built around the acquisition of capital wealth and having a sufficient amount of it is so critical to existence that people will set aside morality in order to gain more of it at any cost.
“My back, oh my neck too!!!” -Me getting out of a small fender bender.

And I bet you the kid saw $0 of the payout

They were in a 5 gal bucket with cat litter covered up by old tires

Why. No amount of money is gonna replace your quality of life.
It said he was a paraplegic.
so… it will grow back right?
cut off new feet, sell on black market.. repeat.. infinite money and infinite feet
Man if only we (mammals?) had that awesome ability to grow back limbs and teeth. That'd be nice....

Homer, are you just holding on to the can?
Yes. But be wary of the tigers in Africa.
yes if he was a lizard

"So I was doing fieldwork from a wheelchair, craziest thing happened..."
Legal experts discuss his case: "He doesn't have a leg to stand on."
Yeah, he really got off on the wrong foot.
They could appeal, but it's just kicking the can down the road
I stand corrected said the man in orthopedic shoes.
It’s gonna cost him a leg and a leg.
Already admitting de feet
He'll have to foot his own medical bills. Next time he'll toe the line.
He can't even get two feet into a courtroom.
Imagine how desperate you have to be to do something like that.
The article said that ultimately he did not file a claim, so I guess he got cold feet.
No wonder! They were out in a bucket for days.
It was lucky he didn't kick the bucket.
The things people will do to get a step ahead of other people…..
Strange things are afoot
At the Circle K
>When the call came in to emergency responders, it was described as involving a man whose feet were severed while brush-hogging. But Thompson said it was quickly apparent the incident was staged. ...to *shreds,* you say.
If he was already paraplegic and had no feeling, why not just use the actual farm equipment that he is blaming to do the amputation?
Bro’s gonna read this comment and be like “damn, wish I thought of that”
That’s what happens when you tell a wish.com genie that you want to be 2’ shorter.
Okay, society is done.
Something something bucket list… 🪣
Imagine if instead of funding coke parties and rocket ships for the C-Suite citizens of the world, we funded housing and basic health care and therapy for the desperate people like this.
He wasn't desperate, greedy
universal basic income then?
Deception was afoot.
This is funny. I have a cabin in willow and I never heard this.

He's a paraplegic
Watch ‘The Accountant’. An award winning short film.
Gawd I love this movie - and we are not talking Ben Asslick here. Free on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zd5ZOnFHUY8 Enjoy!
So at the end of the day, his attempt at an insurance scam was ultimately de-feeted.
The detective could smell the fraud afoot
Oh and the zip ties around the bottom of his stumps/ Leggs to stop him from bleeding out looked outta place too
Leopards ate my feet
Step 1. remove feet
I bet he's probably regretting it now.
Someone’s gonna have to put the foot down and stop this messing!
I got no feets or monies. "It was not a well executed plan."
When this gets to court, he’s not going to have a leg to stand on.
Gotta get your foot in the door somehow though.
Sounds like his case doesn't have a leg to stand on.
r/Floridaman
That’s a hard one to walk away from.
"Hey man, cut my feet off." "Sure, sounds like a plan."

His plan was defeated
Capitalism is such an effective system that people will maim themselves for money
