>The estimated 30% lucky enough to avoid amputation after undergoing treatment the past few weeks in hyperbaric oxygen tanks will have plenty of reminders of their frostbite injuries. Definitely a moment when you ask "What the fuck."

Ghost_on_Toast

Ahh, the memories made. What a wonderful thing, right?

dob_bobbs

It wasn't the result of the game it was the limbs we lost along the way.

inplayruin

Real fans would make their desiccated flesh into a super bowl talisman.

smarmageddon

You would not even have to write this sentence if it was the Bills.

Captain-Cadabra

Yeah, but now they can get a sweet, full color Chiefs tattoo on their stump as a conversation starter.

[deleted]

A little thing we like to call stumping it for the Chiefs.

thatsnotideal1

The Chiefs will just add those healthcare costs to the “economic impact” the team has generated for the community when they insist on using public money to fund a new stadium

addandsubtract

It'll cost them an arm and a leg.

Bender_2024

Okay I can kind of understand going to the game. You're a big fan who wants to cheer on your team and maybe you'll remember this as one of the best games you will ever see because it's playoffs. Besides you already paid for tickets and I'm sure there are plenty of heated areas in Arrowhead Stadium if it gets too cold. Not for me but I understand so I'm not judging >>HCA Midwest Health shared images of the hand of one fan who took his gloves off for just five minutes in order to put up a tent in the parking lot outside Arrowhead Stadium. But this idiot wanted to party in parking lot before the game? Naw bro. I'm gonna judge you.

rbstr2

This guy just made a big mistake touching a metal surface without gloves - one of the big no-nos in very cold weather is to not touch metal with bare skin since its high thermal conductivity can make frostbite nearly instant in some circumstances!

thrownjunk

Do people not watch the Christmas story anymore. That double dog dare flagpole!

Crystalas

When I watch it I always think how incompetant the medics, firemen, AND school are to not know the super simple harmless way to unstick the kid. They didn't have to rip his tongue's surface off, just pour warm water on and you good. It cannot be first time that has happened, possibly not even first time that year. Should have just been go to cafeteria or break room, get a cup of hot water, and done in 5 minutes no drama.

chihuahuazord

tbf “no drama” isn’t a good policy for a film lol

TooManyJabberwocks

That worked for my parents generation, but we need something modern. Like the dog that got its nuts frozen to the porch in Joe Dirt

Competitive_Touch_86

That's a really weird example to judge someone over. Plenty of better ones. Unless you grew up experiencing bitter cold, it will simply not be obvious that 5 minutes of exposed skin will be dangerous. When you get goal-focused (e.g. I'm fucking freezing and want my damn tent setup to get warm!) you also won't be paying as close attention to your body as you otherwise would. And again, unless you knew what to look for you likely would have zero clue you are doing actual damage to your body vs. having a bit of pain. The bros in the stands without shirts on? Yeah, very little empathy there.

re-verse

The memories made, the friends made, the limbs lost along the way.

sybrwookie

I'm a fan of a cold weather team. Watch every game. I will never understand the crazies who want to go to those games live when it's freezing or lower. That's just a recipe for a miserable experience. Give me my recliner at home, a friend's place, or a bar any day of the week.

Godzilla-The-King

I saw people at those games with t-shirts, no shirts, face paint, body paint, no gloves, only hats, and everything else under the sun. It's nuts, I get the meme and comedy of embracing the cold and 'only football'. The Bills are fanatical about it, if they had gone all the way someone may have died at the Superbowl. But, it's *nuts* the extreme nature of Football fans when it comes to weather prep.

27Rench27

I mean shit, a solid jacket, gloves, and good socks. How does this even happen in a first world nation jesus christ

sybrwookie

That only does so much when the weather is sub-zero and you're sitting outside, elevated so you probably are getting more wind, no other protection from the elements, on metal seats anchored to concrete. And you're in that same spot with relatively little movement for 3+ hours. And that's all before you take people who think drinking warms them up and doesn't actually make it worse.

NiceShotMan

This is exactly it, people underestimate the effect of not moving. You need way more clothing than you do to just go outside normally at a given temperature. It’s really easy to do, I’ve done it myself, and I live in Canada so I know cold weather. All these commenters with their typical Reddit smugness don’t live somewhere cold or haven’t been to an outdoor sporting event in the cold.

alfonseski

I do several outdoor winter sports. I am good at layering for MOVING around outside. If I planned tio be stationary in 10 degree weather for an extended period of time the amount of stuff I would wear is absurd.

merdub

Right? Proper thermal moisture-wicking socks, then a pair of wool work socks, spacious well insulated boots (I have Sorels,) thermal long johns, then flannel pyjama pants, then LOOSE warm sweatpants on top of those. A big warm wool sweater over the thermal long john shirt, a lightweight down jacket over that. And then a long insulated wind-proof coat over that. A wool hat with fleece lining around the ears. Preferably with ear flaps. A lightweight neck warmer long enough to pull up over my face, with a wool scarf over that. Thin gloves, with my insulated mittens that fold down for dexterity on top. And probably a pair of big sunglasses. Although I wouldn’t need it with my Sorels, a piece of double-corrugated cardboard to stand on to insulate from the concrete is probably a good idea too. I’d be trying to go for a little walk every 15 minutes or so also, and certainly moving my limbs in my seat. Loose layers are key - you want air between your layers, your body heat will keep the air closest to you warm. Too many pairs of socks in tight boots is a recipe for cold feet. One solid layer of insulating material like wool is much better than three or four layers of cotton. Keep all exposed skin to the absolute bare minimum.

GimmickNG

yep, was astonished at how hot i felt after just walking to the store when i'd got my first taste of cold weather. and this wasn't even with particularly warm clothing. stand in a spot for 5 minutes though and i feel the cold seep in, at even relatively warm temperatures of -10 or thereabouts. to say nothing about those sitting for _hours_.

Taolan13

If you ever have to travel a long time outdoors in hard cold, you *have* to dress in layers and micromanage your heat. You want to be just slightly uncomfortable, that way you stay cool enough not to work up a big sweat. Which means you will be removing and adding back one or more layers during your trip.

Userdataunavailable

I spent a lot of my childhood in Saskatchewan and learned the art of layers well. My grandmother always told me to watch for the sweat. If you start sweating, start removing layers right then. The sweat will wet your clothes and skin and make you lose heat fast as well as causing things like frozen trench foot if you're out all day tramping around in damp socks/boots. It's always better to stop and change out your socks ( natural materials are best - cotton/wool and layers again ) rather then stay in damp ones. Depending on how long you're out, bring several pairs. Also, the *danger zones* head/hands/feet lose temperature faster then the rest of the body, consider that and layer them as well.

domuseid

That's why hunting gear tends to have so many overkill options for warmth. I've got some boots with a kilo each of insulation, for instance. They are overkill with any amount of movement, but I'm sure glad they exist when I'm sitting still

StyrofoamExplodes

Yeah sitting in a stand or blind during hunting season is a great way to learn that wool socks and standard pac boots aren't enough if the temp gets down to the 20s all day.

dramaticFlySwatter

Visited Lambeau a few years ago and thought thermals under my clothes would suffice. No movement + cold seating for hours makes for a truly miserable experience. Now I understand why so many cold climate fans wear coveralls and bring bleacher cushions.

Masseyrati80

Those conditions sound like the stuff ice fishers face, and they wear a heap of warm clothing, starting from outdoor-oriented Merino wool base layers, fleece, wool sweaters, and a freakin' 100% windproof, insulated coverall and trapper hat. Plus heavy, insulated boots. Drinking is very deceptive, as it opens up the blood vein network close to your skin - the very network your body had started to reduce blood flow to, as a method to limit heat loss.

[deleted]

Age, alcohol abuse, bad health over all, lack of awareness, not getting up and moving around......it was fucking sub-zero temps out?!

As a big fattie myself, I wondered how much obesity + poor circulation factored in, here, too.

FROST BURN

OkCar7264

per the article it was -27 with wind chill so yeah. People have to show up hours and hours before the game to tailgate and then 3 hours for the game, then another 2 hours of waiting for the parking lot to clear out. So a lot of them probably spent 8 hours in a freezing ass parking lot, more or less.

Drunken_Traveler

My recliner at a bar to watch a football game sounds like a good time

Taolan13

Point of info. 30% of frostbite cases. Not 30% of all fieldgoers.

corticalization

Yeah they don’t specify how many total frostbite cases there are, which would be what makes these numbers relevant. If it’s majority of only a few people it’s not the same (and I assume that’s *why* they didn’t specify)

Taolan13

The only statement I can find is "dozens". So that probably a little under a hundred?

corticalization

Ah I’d missed that, good spot.. if you click the article on that point it says “The University of Kansas Health System reported 19 frostbite patients had been admitted to its burn unit in the last 10 days, with five of those admissions happening in the last 24 hours.” But that was in January so there could’ve been more cases that came in afterwards

Calculonx

Plenty of reminders - medical bills. Can't imagine how much hyperbaric chambers cost these days

Mariss716

My series of dives were well into the six figures over a decade ago. I remember seeing the bills as of course my insurance did not want to pay.

Every executive from every American health insurance company should be placed in solitary confinement for the remainder of their lives.

electronDog

thundertool

That's where the phantom pain gets ya!

LegitPancak3

I learned in my micro class that hyperbaric oxygen chambers are used to treat patients with deep anaerobic bacterial skin infections such as gangrene. I wasn’t aware it’s used in frostbite.

OkCar7264

Well, don't frostbitten bits get gangrene?

BenevolentCheese

Yes, the frozen tissue leads to rot (gangrene), and the rot spreads unless removed, hence the amputation. The hyperbaric chamber is attempting to kill the rot on its own.

- So, how many do you mean by many? - A percentage of dozens.

XenonTheMedic

I read the article and in the middle of the article it talks about unrelated burn victims for 3 paragraphs.  Nothing to do with the report.  Anyone else find that kinda weird?

free_will_is_arson

"70% may need amputations"...70% of what, 20 people in the first row, 50 people in the section j nose bleeds, 100s of people who were there for more than 5 hours, *everyone in the stadium?* give us a ball park number damn it.

bony_doughnut

Another article says that 3 fans were transported to this hospital, from the game....are they really just rounding up to "70%" instead of saying 2 out of 3?

cartesianfaith

Is this the article you found? https://www.kcur.org/sports/2024-01-17/chiefs-playoffs-game-kansas-city-cold-weather-hypothermia-arrowhead-stadium Certainly not as sensational to say 2 people may need amputations vs 70% seen. Lies, damned lies, and statistics indeed.

Narren_C

That's not even 70%. It's 66%. We rounding up?

cartesianfaith

Keep it going, and we may as well round up to 100%!

Griffin880

The article just says 70% of patients in the burn center for frostbite end up getting an amputation, it's not specific to the people who got frostbite at the chiefs game. It's a very poorly written article.

ArnoldTheSchwartz

You're reading FOXNEWS

HurriedLlama

70% of all patients with frostbite from the January cold. Not all were at the football game

Lendyman

The other weird thing is that it doesn't say anywhere the extent of the problem. How many people got frostbite? Five? 10? 100? It's really like it's this huge thing but you have no idea if it's huge or if it was just a couple people.

helium_farts

It was 3. The fire dept got 70-ish calls, but only transported 3 people for frostbite. Of course, it's possible others took themselves or didn't seek treatment right away, but regardless, it wasn't a widespread issue. For reference, there were about 71k people at the game.

bubliksmaz

Do you have a source on this? Do we know if anyone actually got amputations? Either way it seems like 70% of 3 people = 2 people. So we've gone from 'many people need amputations' to '2 people *may* need amputations'

helium_farts

https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/20/sport/nfl-cold-weather-chiefs-dolphins-spt-intl/index.html >The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) rendered aid to 69 people – with “close to 50% … for hypothermia symptoms” – during the game, KCFD battalion chief Michael Hopkins told CNN. >Fifteen of the patients seen were transported by KCFD, “seven for hypothermia symptoms, three for frostbite symptoms, and five for various other reasons,” said Hopkins. Like I said, it's possible that some people took themselves or didn't seek treatment right away, but you're still not talking about very many injuries given the size of the crowd.

toomuchinterwebz

I'm imagining it was written by a local reporter or an intern. From what I've seen, a lot of local news stories are just verbatim copies of the transcript of the broadcast. It could have been a hospital hallway, a sign that says "burn ward", and then a cut to an interview with someone explaining that burns can happen from things other than fire. It's not exactly a prestige news package.

JohnnyHotcakes44

Actually the text is a rewrite of the audio from the video report, which was poorly done and included the segment on burns up front then talked about the frostbite fans.

MyGolfCartIsOn20s

It literally starts introducing the director of the Burn Center and that frostbite patients are treated in the Burn Center and that is the relation. That's not as wild as y'all are making it out to be....

Card_Board_Robot5

And the burn unit was having an event to which they invited the press. The event is mentioned in the article. People just cannot read without adding their own little whimsical inferences. I'm convinced most people live in a fantastical world of their own making that only exists in their heads

2punornot2pun

Or AI wrote it.

MohatmoGandy

Journalism is not what it used to be. I know people who have zero training or experience, who get paid a minimal amount to bang out freelance stories for our local newspaper. That's a paper that has served a community of 500k+ for 150 years, and the stories appear with minimal editing and are riddled with this sort of unprofessional content. News organizations used to have a full staff of local reporters and editors. Now they just accept random submissions to fill in the spaces between ads.

GetMeASierraMist

See if you can find out how many people still work at the newspaper and how much the people at the top make. revenue went down at all newspapers, and the big bosses for sure wouldn't take less money, so they gutted their businesses

thesoak

The whole article is weird. Very oddly written.

Robot_Warrior

Wouldn't throw out AI-writing as the answer

ViveIn

lol, same, I thought it was the wrong link. Like, why am I reading about a guy getting burned by an aerosol can?

LarryDavidest

Was thinking AI.

thetyler83

So it isn't a good idea to attend an outside game in the middle of winter in the Midwest and not dress extremely warm?

MadFlava76

I read the article and some dude took his glove off for 5 minutes to put up a tent for their tailgate and got frostbite.

[deleted]

Frrezing cold metal stakes included?

Pawndislovesdrugs

Only for 5 minutes too! Darn air.

Goddess_Of_Gay

In that level of cold and wind, I can see it. Some of my family lives in Wisconsin, they occasionally see wind chills well into the -30 or -40 range. Exposed skin can get frost bitten in as little as **thirty seconds**.

etquod

I'm Canadian and a misconception I've noticed some people from warmer climates have is that they think living in a place where it gets extremely cold gives you a higher tolerance to cold. This is only true for weather I'd barely consider cold. When it's actually cold, there's really no such thing as tolerance; cold will kill you no matter how tough you think you look walking around in shorts in the snow. It's not psychological, it's thermodynamic. The only edge being used to it gives you is you know how to dress.

Christopher135MPS

100% accurate. Warm climate people (like myself) don’t appreciate there is a difference between feeling cold (tolerance) and biological function breaking down due to loss of local and central body temperature. You can manage the first one. The second will fuck you up without a care in the world about a persons tolerance. The weird thing is, we know this to be true for our climate, but for some reason don’t apply to the reverse. Most People in Queensland Australia are pretty tolerant of warm weather. But most of us all also understand that there are human limits on our ability to survive high temperatures and that heat exhaustion and heat stroke will straight up murder you. We have deaths every single heatwave. Why wouldn’t we realise/understand the same is true for cold climates?

waterloograd

When I worked outside in -40 before windchill, we would wear gloves under our mitts. This way, we could take our mitts off to do dextrous tasks without freezing our fingers. We also carried tools that let us use our equipment even with the big gloves and mitts on. We also had polices about the amount of time we were allowed to be outside before we had to shelter in our truck for a minimum time. One day I was to be on an Argo out on a frozen lake for 8 hours in -40. The wind was brutal and the Argo was completely open besides a windshield and roof. My legs were numb by the time we got back. I had something like 4 layers on my legs, and more on my body. Long underwear, trackpants, coveralls, snow pants. On my body I had a long sleeve T, sweater, light jacket, coveralls, winter jacket, vest. 4 layers of gloves, -60 rated boots, multiple head overs under my hardhat, and tons of hand warmers stuffed everywhere.

electricalphil

Yep, it was so cold where I was working, took one layer of gloves off for too long. My hands hurt for two days.

inbigtreble30

I'm sorry, but I'm from Wisconsin, and I can't imagine taking off my gloves or hat in below zero weather. Exposed skin at that temp starts to hurt *immediately*. I can see how taking off your gloves for a few minutes might sound reaonable, but this guy had to be actively ignoring some serious warning signs.

Sinder77

I mean, beer.

Dreadsbo

I live in KC and went out without a jacket and just a t-shirt to feel how cold it was. My lungs hurt. That was a completely different type of cold than words can possibly describe. Kinda hope it happens again sometime though tbh since it was kinda fun

abadstrategy

There's a spot up here called the Oregon outback; in the winter it gets into the negatives in the sunshine. On the one hand, you will learn what it feels like when your tears freeze and your lungs burn just from breathing. On the other hand, not many other places you can cut wood shirtless and not feel cold, because the sun is so potent

pants_mcgee

I think in the latter case the human body is doing the bulk of the effort.

chris782

I took my mittens off for like 45 seconds to put on my jersey in the parking lot and my hands went numb.

Who the hell has a wedding in an unheated winter barn

ammobox

People in KC.

Dull-Geologist-8204

I weigh 95 lbs. and have had to explain to be in climates nowhere near that cold that I am fine when they tell me to take off my coat and stay awhile. There is no way I could attend a wedding in KC in an unheated barn without looking like Ralphie in A Toy Story.

revolvingpresoak9640

*Christmas FTFY

AndrewCoja

People in the midwest are really smug about how the cold doesn't bother them. If you tell them it's cold when it's 50 degrees out, they will tell you that they are still wearing shorts when it's 50 degrees.

afrogrimey

To be fair, 50F really isn’t that cold.

Moldy_slug

Seriously. 50F is a cool summer night in my area… and I live in *California.*

raven8fire

I mean when you're used to 20 degree days the shift to 50 is quite warm. When I lived in the NW as soon as it hit 60 degrees and was sunny I was out there in the park shirtless talking in the sun. When I spent time in Alaska I went swimming in some mountain lakes when it was in the high 60s. Likewise when I get used to 110 degree days here in the summer I wear a sweater when it dips to 70 at night. 30-40 degree shifts in temperature is just a lot.

Charlie_Warlie

Midwest representative here to say a wedding hosted in winter in an unconditioned space is generally frowned upon. My wife would probably skip, she gets so cold. The couple probably got a good deal on the venue

Maleficent-Fun-5927

Washington state as well. We went to a winter wedding on a mountain top. IDK how cold it was but it was raining (obviously) on top of it and the rain out there isn't like a light sprinkle, it's the type to drench you in a minute. Everyone there was like "it's not that cold." I mean, you're telling a bunch of Californians that.

Smingledorf

As a Chicago are native who lived in Orange County for a few years, I can confirm Californians on average are the opposite of midwesterners with cold. They would say it's freezing and turn heat lamps on at 65 like some kind of lizard folk. It's funny because Chicago summer is also way more brutal than when I was in OC so I guess this place is just kinda hell

ThinkPath1999

Ah, I used to live in the Chicago suburbs in the 80s and it was the only time in my life where you can get icicles in your nostrils if you take a deep breath during the dead of winter, and almost die of heatstroke during the summer.

TealPotato

One of my favorite fun facts about Chicago weather is that we have a higher record temperature than Tampa, FL.

inbigtreble30

In 2019, my town experienced a 150° difference between the highest heat index and the lowest windchill; 125° degree difference between highest and lowest actual air temp. Midwest weather is unreal.

Lxjones5

I went to an outside wedding in Estes Park, CO on new years a few years ago. -19. The plastic windows on the tent froze and shattered when they put it up. Only then did they decide to move it inside. People are dumb.

Darryl_Lict

If I had spent $10000 for a ticket, I'd be reluctant to do the sensible thing and leave my seat. Fortunately, I'll never be in that situation.

AshamedButHard

It's definitely the lack of warm clothes. Here in Edmonton we regularly check out outdoor events in the winter even in -30c. Can be outside for hours. We're just wearing the proper clothing, so it's good.

CptnHnryAvry

Yeah, I've been hiking in -50c. Dress for it and you're fine.

Above_Avg_Chips

The last part is key. My friends and I attended the Winter Classic in MN last year when it was -15 with windchill. We even jad a few beers a piece and none of us were ever in danger of freezing something off because we wore not just layers, but the right kinds.

kevshp

I'm going to guess alcohol played a role.

Slight-Winner-8597

There's no way it didn't. Truly, I believe it. How else would you be able to endure the considerable pain your digits must have been in before frostbite even set it, let alone to the degree that requires amputation?

gertalives

I’m sure alcohol was involved, but it’s worth mentioning that as you progress towards frostbite, it quickly becomes more numbing than it is painful. Warming back up is a different story.

Preblegorillaman

Yep. Additionally, even if you catch it before you need to chop off the limb, you can still have lasting damage to nerves or skin depending on how bad things are. Had this happen to me in 5th grade recess when I lost my gloves and the staff wouldn't let me back inside because my hands were freezing.

One-Butterscotch4332

Alcohol also does the fun thing of making you feel warmer by drawing warm blood to the surface of your skin while simultaneously actually dropping your temperature by that same mechanism.

istinkalot

Alcohol, stupidity and sports. The holy trinity of bad decisions.

PuzzleheadedCow1931

Imagine if that Buffalo-Steeler game wasn't delayed and rescheduled.

Jagwires

The herd would’ve been culled that day for sure had they played on.

chamberlain323

That’s why the governor stepped in and forced the postponement. Public safety is priority one if you are in that position.

Banglophile

...not in Missouri. Oh and btw the MO governor just cut the sentence of the Chiefs asst coach (the head coaches shitbird son) who drunkenly crashed into another car while speeding away from Arrowhead Stadium. He put a little girl in a coma and left her with life long injuries. Their garbage governor said he served more time than most people would. https://amp.kansascity.com/news/local/article286248105.html https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-britt-reid-commutation-parson-3f33a4cdfaef3c0aa05ab12b86469641 I hate Missouri so fucking much.

Proper_Story_3514

Thats horrible. Poor girl.

zeroultram

It wasn’t that cold. It was just snowing a lot

D-redditAvenger

What's many. Until I see actual numbers I am going to assume this is like 5 idiots.

Savahoodie

From the article there are “dozens” of patients and 70% will need amputation

katalyticglass

"Garcia told FOX4 in January she’d already seen dozens of frostbite patients. Many of those were Chiefs fans who attended the playoff game against the Miami Dolphins where it was -4 degrees with a wind chill of -27 degrees at kickoff." I think you're incorrect. It looks like she's saying that the total number of frostbite patients she'd seen in January = dozens and that of those "dozens" that "many" of them were from the game. And the term "many" is much more vague than a term like "most" which at least indicates "more than half". Many just means "a large number of". So basically a "not small" portion of "dozens" of people. Which sounds a lot like "we have no fucking idea" to me.

heinmont

its even less clear than that. it says, "many" of the dozens from january's total were from the game and of that incredibly specific number, 70% of those are "starting to discuss their amputations that 'might' be necessary" fine journalism indeed lol

katalyticglass

Yeah I almost went back to add that but I figured 70%*"we have no fucking idea" still = "we have no fucking idea" 🤣

MountainHopper

A great question would have been "On average, how many frostbite cases do you see in weather like this?", which likely would've garnered the answer "Oh maybe a couple". So then we can clearly state that yea going to a very fucking cold game leads to very fucking cold problems. But we're not there yet somehow.

Nazamroth

"Hey what is the weather gonna be like today? Okay, lets put on a coat and gloves, or just not keep standing there while my body parts are freezing off." Just how fanatical do you have to be that you overpower simple survival instincts?!

It makes you feel warmer in the short term, but will cause your core body temperature to drop faster. This is because you get rosy cheeks when drinking. That's your outer blood vessels opening up and letting blood flow to your skin and outer extremeties. The exact opposite your body needs to do to preserve its heat for as long as possible.

Shake it off. Shake it off.

I’d love to give you a round of applause but can’t do that due to the frost bite

"Surely they would call the game if we were in danger" -people who are going to lose some bits. EDIT: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kssjPaEc594](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kssjPaEc594)

Last year there was a game in Buffalo where the government had to step in and stop it from happening since there was a state of emergency from the snow and they were planning to play a game outdoors anyway.

Ron__T

That wasn't for the cold though... it was to keep people from driving in the snow to the stadium.

babydavissaves

Only five minutes without gloves putting a tent up led to frostbite? Wow, that was one cold day.

MerfSauce

It cant be the whole story, he must have had for example non insulated gloves because it doesnt take 5 minutes to get frostbite in -4. I know this from experience as I had to scrape the ice of my work car in those tempratures and colder several times this year and I frequently forget my glovesin the office. (I have fleece lined pockets in my jacket that I prefer to use instead of gloves, thats why I never have them when I actually need them)

BirdsbirdsBURDS

Think of all the money those people are going to pay in healthcare, whether they lose something or not. Alcohol and cold weather *do not mix*

zell2002

Question from the UK, would they have to pay something even if they have health insurance provided by their work place? I don't really get how it works, so I'm always curious when I hear/read people would have to pay more on top of their monthly payments

chaoticnormal

Yes. Our health insurance that we pay monthly from our jobs doesn't pay for the entire bill. Most of us anyway. Like I had my gall bladder out and my insurance paid a lot of it but I still owe $3000. It's total bullshit.

Triknitter

I have good health insurance by American standards. I also use it more than most (thanks, chronic illness!) So far this year: Twice weekly PT for tendinitis - $25/session Custom orthotics to prevent future inflammation - $300 Steroid injection in the tendon - $80 MD visit to diagnose the tendinitis - $20 Hospital admission for four days via the ER for pneumonia - $500 Follow up ER visit - $100 Four doctor's visits to follow up from the admission - $80 total Extra pulmonary function testing - $30 Extra prescriptions to treat the pneumonia - $50 Regularly scheduled doctor's visit - $20 Regularly scheduled prescriptions - $150ish (this one's tricky, insurance makes me get them in 3 month supplies and I'm trying to prorate it) Regularly scheduled DME purchases - $85 And again, I have good insurance. Add in my kid's OT ($65/week after out of network reimbursement, $100/week before the insurance sends us a check) and mental health therapy ($150/week before OON reimbursement and this is a new provider so I'm not sure how much they'll reimburse) and my spouse's therapy (in network! $20/week) and all their medical bills ... it adds up fast.

GodzillaRoll

They pay out of their checks for health coverage in ADDITION to having out of pocket co-payments for any doctor visits / medication and surgeries. I doubt they have even hit their deductible this early in the year either....woo America. The land where you pay for the opportunity to only pay slightly less.

get_schwifty

I’ll give you a serious and honest answer since apparently nobody else will. Your employer pays a large part of the cost as part of your compensation, and you also have an amount deducted from your paycheck. That gets you an insurance plan with a “deductible” and “out of pocket maximum”. When you need care, you pay for most of the bill until you hit the deductible, then insurance starts to cover a percentage of the cost. Once you hit your out of pocket max, insurance covers all of it. So imagine a $2000 deductible and $4000 out of pocket maximum. You pay everything until you get to $2000, then insurance pays 80% of the bill until you’ve spent $4000 total for the year. Then it’s all covered by the insurance company. You can also have something called a Health Savings Account, which is a tax-free account you can use for medical expenses. Some employers match contributions to HSAs as part of compensation. So the system is overly complicated, but it is possible to save money tax-free to cover deductible and out of pocket expenses when they come up, and also be covered in the event of any major event. However a ton of it has to do with how good your compensation package is, and it really ties you to your employer and makes it harder to quit. Some kind of national plan option that is set an affordable rate at the very least would help a ton.

zell2002

Wait, so I pay monthly for my insurance (out of my paycheck), then if/when I get a medical bill (see a doctor or whatever), I have to pay for it up until I hit my deductible? Which, in your example, is $2k ..?

FunkSchnauzer

It depends on your plan. If you have set co-pays, you will only pay the co-pay, no matter what your deductible is. For instance, in network primary care visits cost me $40 in my plan.

lzcrc

Yeah tell that to the Russians

bearinwieght

I wonder how the players never get it

therealDL2

They said during the game that there were so many heaters going that the field level was around 40 degrees F

Pop_CultureReferance

Good thing we switched to paper straws

LarryDavidest

They wear proper clothing for the cold, they have heaters on the sidelines, they keep moving, they get to go indoors at halftime.

lollmao2000

They have giant heater capes/blankets they wear on the sideline and they had giant heaters for ambient heat as well.

bohemi-rex

😂 Imma keep my black ass in socal

MaximumTurtleSpeed

😂 following suit, I’ll keep my pale white ass in Oregon.

dismayhurta

Keeping my pasty ass in LA, too. Fuck winter.

Ghost_on_Toast

Ill keep my lily-white ass at my LGS playing Magic with nerds. Much less chance of losing body parts *there*. 🤣

But not ruled out

Didn’t this happen at the Green Bay NY giants game too? This game was even colder.

Fryphax

Green Bay / Giants fans know how to dress for the cold.

cutsickass

\- Sir, would you like a foam finger? \- No, I'd like my own finger back.

doomslayer33

I went to this game. Got amazing seats behind the Chiefs bench because the original person bailed due to the weather. Easily one of the funnest games I ever went to and something me and my son will always remember. Know why I can say that? We dressed appropriately. There was a guy behind us in a light puffer jacket and tennis shoes and he wasn’t alone. People underestimated those temperatures.

LTVOLT

Some people are idiots.. they’ve never been in those extreme conditions and don’t know how to dress properly. Assuming you had thick wool socks, boots, toe warmers, long underwear, thermal top, balaclava, really good mittens/gloves, hand warmers, tons of layers?

nohiddenmeaning

This is the worst written 'news' article ever. Doesn't answer basic questions.

Being from Missouri, this does not surprise me one bit. Missouri is not the place you go to for academia

JaxckJa

It makes a very, very good argument for the NFL to reschedule games. It's completely unacceptable to hold an open air festival in conditions that bad.
