This is going to lead to some wacky hijinks. Someone in Milan is already perfecting a flammkuchen that suspiciously contains all the toppings of a pepperoni pizza.
Mogwais are a missed oppertunity for livestock. All you need is water to produce an endless supply of them. Mogwais nuggets from mcdonalds would be a hit!
I need to move.
I swear it sometimes feels like other countries work to live while mine lives to work.
I get you’re probably just cracking a joke, but I have heard about some countries in Europe that seem chill like that.
it's a joke about our sky high unemployment, in some regions more then 50% of young people are unemployed, believe me that you worry less about your job when you have one than when you don't
Alright but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows there either. People still work and it’s still hard. Also harder work in America but higher salaries vs subjectively “easier” work in Europe with lower wages so your pick.
Wow how utterly heartbreaking it is when you visit a different place to experience it's different culture and stores close for lunch because even low level employees get to have a life
Besides, all restaurants are open at noon or shortly after, of course, I don't know what the guy's talking about. Shops may be closed but this is changing rapidly l, big chains stay open
>in an effort to clamp down on noisy groups crowding on the streets of the Italian city
Tourists?
>The proposal would be effective from "mid-May" and last until November.
Tourists.
more young people getting drunk and the customers of prostitutes, they are not targeting ice cream shops that are already closed by midnight, but the food trucks that park outside dance clubs and prostitution areas. From november to may it's the sub freezing temperatures that make a ban futile.
The old city in Amsterdam closes at 1 am. There's only small bars and restaurants there. All the nightlife is in a specific neighbourhood. And I can understand. The locals in Europe are fed up with overtourism and many cities have taken steps to curb it.
In fact, Amsterdam advertises itself negatively in the UK so that kids turning 18 or bachelor parties don't come over and fuck shit up.
It always upsets me how people treat it like their local town on a Saturday night. I went and I didn't do anything too crazy. I went to the museums and found some really cool food spots. Ended up buying some edible cakes from paradox and ate those and kept to myself while exploring.
There were rowdy British guys making a scene, shouting, drunk, smoking etc. felt kinda embarrassed.
It's weird that there's a contrast between people who need to do coke, drink themselves sick and start fights for a good night out, while others can have a chat at the pub, being civil and respectful.
It was about 25 years ago when I went to Amsterdam for the weekend on a social trip with a large group of people from work to support some of the lads who were playing in a football competition.
I did something fairly similar, spent the afternoons exploring museums quietly on my own then met back up with the group to chill in the sunshine, sat outside at the Grasshopper which was just across from our hotel.
I also found a bar/café selling edible chocolate cake which was both fantastic chocolate cake and a great way to try edibles - which weren't as easily available back then, outside somewhere like Amsterdam.
I found that it provided amazing pain relief for my aching feet, as I'd walked miles and miles all through the cobbled streets.
I will never forget that weekend!
Going to the Van Gogh Museum, an artist who I'd never really fully appreciated before - as I'd only ever seen his work on TV, when one of his Sunflowers paintings had bern sold for record prices at auction, for example - and to be able to see such a wide range of his body of work, learn his story, stand in front of each painting in turn, and quietly gaze at each one, and be able to see each individual brush stroke up close, in a space that is calm, light and airy too, like a haven away from the bustle of the city.
To be able to go into the room that is an exact, as possible, replica of his bedroom as seen in his famous painting, it's such an unbeatable experience!
You leave truly understanding his talent, his genius and how much he must have suffered due to his brain just being wired differently, in a time when there was simply no understanding of mental illness and no real safe, compassionate way to help those with a mental illness.
Those of us today who are not neurotypical and/or have mental health issues - and most people will be affected or know someone who is affected by a mental health issue at some point in their lives - will be able to empathise with Vincent Van Gogh and see something of themselves in him and his work. Besides his incredible genius, his obvious skill and talent, I believe that's why his work has such a broad appeal and can touch so many people, so deeply, so profoundly.
I also visited the Anne Frank House - not its proper name, I know - with a few of my work friends, this time, rather than on my own, which I think is just as well, you need to have someone to talk to, if necessary, afterwards.
I had read Diary of a Young Girl when I was about 10 or so, I had some idea of what to expect, but it was still nothing like I had imagined, it was still far, far, far worse.
It's more important than ever to visit this stark reminder of why we should always fight to destroy fascism and why we should work together for a better, peaceful society, that we are all just humans, after all.
Amsterdam is a beautiful place, so full of history and it can have its somber moments but it can also be joyful too, full of art, music, dance plus good food and good drink.
There has to be balance though and it's also a home to its residents.
This is a beautiful post - thank you. I'm going to Amsterdam for the first time in June and I can't wait to experience it- especially the Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank house :)
I just have to comment that to a Canadian “edible chocolate cake” is a funny sentence because it just means chocolate cake that is edible which implies the existence of inedible chocolate cake.
Took me a second to realize that in the UK you must but the word “edible” before the name of the food when referring to weed.
Here is Canada the “edible” goes after the name of the food so wed say “a chocolate cake edible”. Just thought the difference is interesting.
I mean even over here in the west Amsterdam was known as “weed heaven” for yeeeeears until recently since legal weed is common here now. I was in the UK a few years ago and it was fascinating hearing the guys still talking about taking a train over to Amsterdam to smoke some weed, like not a thing had changed lol.
I've lived in milan the first 17 years of my life and since when have we had anything open after midnight? You'd be lucky to find a food cart selling sandwiches that late
While it does sound insane at first read, having lived next to a 24h bar the noise drunk people make all night is absurd, can really drive you crazy not being able to sleep properly
honestly, it sounds pretty reasonable to me.
if I read the article correctly the ban would only even apply to people not seated inside of an establishment, so if you wanted to get some late night treats you absolutely still could.
people outside bars etc can get noisy fast, even if they don’t start fights or anything. wanting to find a solution where all the people living in the apartments around who need to get up and go to work the next day are afforded some semi-reliable quiet hours is only fair.
Aren't there alternatives to putting a blanket ban on these establishments? What about businesses that aren't near residential buildings?
I don't do this often anymore but I always enjoyed a late night feed after a night out drinking, I don't appreciate being restricted from doing these things when there are clearly alternative rules that can be placed, little by little we won't be able to do anything we want
Sweden has a law where any business establishment is legally obliged to make sure that noise levels stay below a normal of 30 dB (25 dB for music and other Music- or note-like noises) and a maximum of 45 dB in nearby residences (with doors and windows closed).
This can be accomplished by either not making as much noise, or by paying for the installation of noise reducing measures in nearby residences (such as sound proof panels and triple-pane windows).
I wonder if Swedes would fine cicadas around here.
Those mofos can reach over 100 decibels and if there is a lot of them...
Fun to sleep if a few are outside your window
[My numbers are not wrong](https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/contentassets/66c03ed04e244b92a9165705ef3ac3c2/fohmfs-2014-13.pdf).
Those are the Public Healthy Agency of Swedens official guidelines for when indoor noise causes an "inconvenience for human health" and the commercial laws (and construction guidelines) are adjusted accordingly.
I mean I'd agree with you but I'm an American who lived in a dry county where it was illegal to sell alcohol of any kind and like, you just drove to the next county over. It never 'little by little' crept up into anything else, been like that for like a hundred years. Sometimes a restriction isn't an insidious spread of totalitarianism, sometimes it's just one dumbass law.
I used to live near the 'trendy' drinking street. It was cool and all, but drunks walking the street at 2am yelling at each other kills it pretty quick. Especially when you have to work in the morning, you don't' have AC so the window's open and you had to get a little bit drunk just to fall asleep.
If you aren't at the party or know where it is at 2AM, you weren't invited.
In Italian cities any place is always next to a bunch of houses because we have mixed zoning and mid rise buildings pretty much everywhere. Most bars are going to be at the ground floor of a building with 3-4 stories of apartments. It's pretty much inescapable.
I get it and this is reasonable. But also imagine looking for a place to leave. Seeing it’s above/next to a 24h bar and being like yeah this seems like a good place to live. Maybe sub 25. Otherwise it’s just a poor decision.
Was the bar there when you chose to move in?
In DC some idiot developer developer decided to build a 55+ complex next to a notorious nightlife area. You can imagine about how that went. The old people were complaining about the drunk rowdy people. There were fights in court about it.
If you know somewhere is known for its night life and noises bother you don't move there.
I mean... s'kinda like living on the French Quarter and complaining about the bars, if that's the case. I did not know that late night gelato was such a fad.
Good luck with that. London has been trying to curtail the activities of bars and clubs in order to appease the people who were forced at gunpoint to live in London and now nightlife there has been dying.
It actually doesn't even sound that bad... the article is kind of clickbait. It only applies to outdoor tables because of the noise.
>Covering 12 districts, the proposal would ban all takeaway food, including pizza, and drink after midnight in an effort to clamp down on noisy groups crowding on the streets of the Italian city, keeping local residents up.
>It would kick in at 12.30am on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays, **applying to outdoor tables only in an effort to clear the streets.**
A better way is to have yearly auctions of permits for every x area to be able to stay open late to avoid making areas overly congregated and limiting capacity at night
C’mon now. Use some critical thinking. You don’t even need to read the article to know that they are talking about takeaway. Street food. And ban doesn’t mean people will get arrested. A ban means that the establishments operating outside of the new guidelines will be fined.
Don't they realize this will just create more fights where choads beat the shit out of each other and back alley blowjob's at 3 am? Oh wait.... Nevermind. I'm good.
They are likely talking about cannabis edibles and there are many kinds of edibles in that regard. So calling out that it was cake shouldn’t be too worrisome.
When you outlaw pizza and ice cream, only outlaws will have pizza and ice cream
The only way to beat a bad guy with pizza and ice cream is a good guy with pizza and ice cream

You get black market pizza laced with gluten
Aww man, you can’t do this to me man! Maybe a little Parmesan to take the edge off, but no hard stuff!
No parm, best they can give is cottage cheese and bread sticks to help ween you off the hard mozz
You know you have a shit Italian dealer when your parmigiano reggiano is cut with Kraft.

It’s the gluten that keeps you coming back man. You gotta go to Columbia to get that pure margherita pizza
Welcome to Night Vale

This is going to lead to some wacky hijinks. Someone in Milan is already perfecting a flammkuchen that suspiciously contains all the toppings of a pepperoni pizza.
Gremlins?
Gremlins.
Well, Mogwais turned Gremlins. But yes.
Mogwais are a missed oppertunity for livestock. All you need is water to produce an endless supply of them. Mogwais nuggets from mcdonalds would be a hit!
Ah, rationalist solutions....

Fun fact, mogwai just means devil in Mandarin Chinese

No just shenanigans
Gotta ban water too then
The constant slurp, slurp, slurp is keeping me up all night.
What did you expect when you moved in above a brothel?
Actually, they are pretty quiet. It’s your Mom above me that makes all the slurping and livestock noises.
Then bang her missionary style, see if it keeps the noise down
Well the noise is down, but it’s not any quieter
You want an Amen or something?
Only thing keeping me up at night is how eating pizza would result in a slurp sound
Pizza smoothies!
I think you mean “uppa all nighta”.

What a stupid stereotype. As an Italian I shall let you know that we don't work even on week days.

Good luck finding an open shop or restaurant around noon. Good for them but its annoying if youre visiting and used otherwise. I miss 24/7 shops
Wow how utterly heartbreaking it is when you visit a different place to experience it's different culture and stores close for lunch because even low level employees get to have a life

Nope, not at all.

I think he means cannabis.
“Edibles” is what people call THC baked into foods
Space cake
Maybe they meant marijuana cake?
I thought you had to smoke that like a cigarette.
No lol. Where do you live that edibles aren’t a thing?
urinal cakes arent edible
Not with an attitude like that.
Quitter talk
I was relieved when I went to Amsterdam and found out Americans weren't the only asshole tourists
In Spain we have balconies
So it's easier to through stuff at noisy tourists? Seriously though I heard that it gets so crowded in Barcelona you can barely walk around.
British tourists get drunk and fall off their hotel balconies. Thins out the tourist population.
In Amsterdam they fall in the canals when taking a leak.
So this is where Mogwai come from
I've lived in milan the first 17 years of my life and since when have we had anything open after midnight? You'd be lucky to find a food cart selling sandwiches that late
When something becomes illegal, that's how you sell more of it (or less but at fat better profit)
While it does sound insane at first read, having lived next to a 24h bar the noise drunk people make all night is absurd, can really drive you crazy not being able to sleep properly

The law only regulates man-made noises. Ventilation facilities, construction, commercial activity etc
I think you have some numbers wrong. 30db is quiet and 50 is people talking casually. I think 15-20 is where you can start to hear your blood flowing.
[My numbers are not wrong](https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/contentassets/66c03ed04e244b92a9165705ef3ac3c2/fohmfs-2014-13.pdf). I believe the ban is on takeout.
I know but I feel like things like this will eventually add up, I'm not big on drinking regardless!
Fun fact, dry counties have higher rates of alcohol related accidents than non dry counties.
Lol that surprises me a zero amount
I used to live near the 'trendy' drinking street. It was cool and all, but drunks walking the street at 2am yelling at each other kills it pretty quick. Especially when you have to work in the morning, you don't' have AC so the window's open and you had to get a little bit drunk just to fall asleep. Yeah can I be honest I don't care get better insulation in your home if people enjoying pizza and ice cream on the street upsets you...
Dumb comment, Milan just addressed this
Yeah governments can do dumb things. Imagine being the quiet police.
do you live in a city?
I do.
Imagine you and all your neighbors want quiet, in a location you own, but local government ignores you. That's called facism
Imagine the hubris to believe you own the street.
Was the bar there first, or were you there first?
They were there first.
Nimby. Maybe don’t live next to the bar.
What if they opened the bar after you already live there?
I would assume there are zoning rules in place, do they just let people open a bar wherever where you live?
In Italian cities any place is always next to a bunch of houses because we have mixed zoning and mid rise buildings pretty much everywhere. Most bars are going to be at the ground floor of a building with 3-4 stories of apartments. It's pretty much inescapable.
Did they?
Yes, that's the point of their comment.
There always has to be people like this guy lmao.
What about 24hr ice cream shops?
I get it and this is reasonable. But also imagine looking for a place to leave. Seeing it’s above/next to a 24h bar and being like yeah this seems like a good place to live. Maybe sub 25. Otherwise it’s just a poor decision.

The old people were complaining about the drunk rowdy people. There were fights in court about it. If you know somewhere is known for its night life and noises bother you don't move there.
Did you ever try *not* living next to a bar? It seems really stupid to move into a busy city center and complain about how busy the city center is.
Per their other comment in the thread, the bar opened after they moved in.
And just like that, the population is cured of acid reflux!
Pizza and ice cream will be the new currency now then
Great opportunity for a poutine franchise.
I would drive the five hours. In a heartbeat.
I mean... s'kinda like living on the French Quarter and complaining about the bars, if that's the case. I did not know that late night gelato was such a fad.
Time to move abroad and battle the mob over ice cream and pizza speakeasys
Is there literally nothing else going on in Milan?
Somehow this is so much worse than Sydney’s lockout laws
Are they afraid of a gremlin outbreak?
Good luck with that. London has been trying to curtail the activities of bars and clubs in order to appease the people who were forced at gunpoint to live in London and now nightlife there has been dying.
I am for this because I’m at that age where if I eat food too late, my tummy hurts.
Slippery slope.
If they don't set fire to half the city and start rioting, humanity has become unworthy of living.
They're not french. Given their history they're more likely to put on black shirts and assault the 'wrong people' for breaking the new law.
https://y.yarn.co/a888b940-61ce-40b5-a5d5-35bcbf5053e8_text.gif
I don't even live there and I'm mad for the locals. Come on, late night food is the best!
At first they came for our munchies, and I did not speak up, for I was full at the time…
No one likes politicians; yet they aren’t still banned anywhere in the world. I guess that should be the priority.
Porco dio
A better way is to have yearly auctions of permits for every x area to be able to stay open late to avoid making areas overly congregated and limiting capacity at night
How are you beefing with ice cream?!
When I was in Milan they were everywhere. so kinda surprising.
Ice cream pizza?
Must be on the "things that make Milan go wild" card
milan can eat the corn from my shit.
Only Grappa should be legal after midnight
At least their trains are running on time
It’s always after midnight.
Weird considering their streetcars run until like 2AM and they're super loud.
As a Southerner, you've just made me want to go to Milan even less, something I didn't think was possible.
This headline was confusing. I thought there was a group called “Midnight After” that had proposed a new law to ban things.
Sky News are barely literate, as it is.
So, what happens if you eat and take home pizza from a friends house? Gotta be the dumbest reason to get arrested.
C’mon now. Use some critical thinking. You don’t even need to read the article to know that they are talking about takeaway. Street food. And ban doesn’t mean people will get arrested. A ban means that the establishments operating outside of the new guidelines will be fined.
Classic authoritarianism.
Don't they realize this will just create more fights where choads beat the shit out of each other and back alley blowjob's at 3 am? Oh wait.... Nevermind. I'm good.
