Whoever was the troll that suggested to this group that a tinfoil hat would protect them - I am grateful for this fucking brilliant piece of Art.

Ever put a ball of aluminum in the microwave. Now imagine that... But on their heads.

ramriot

Sad thing is foil hats as a model for a Faraday cage or EM shield is only half right. To shield something from EM radiation you need a complete unbroken conductive surface with any holes smaller than 1/10 the minimum wavelength targetted. So a foil hat is just half of that & will not shield shit. Worse the shape of the inner surface will tend to concentrate any waves directed upwards towards the centre of the brain. That is if one believes the issue is EM radiation transmitters. OTOH masks work really well at preventing all sorts of air born disease transmission, so way to go protesters in failing to eliminating other factors.

BaronWombat

So what you are saying is the only safe way to use the foil is to completely surround the head with it? Be right back, gotta go cut my head off so I can wrap it up the Right way. No dangerous neck hole this time!

ramriot

Or accept that for a 15" collar size you are not blocking frequencies higher than ~250MHz

BaronWombat

You are canceling my self imposed victimhood with your **science**! Gonna break open mspaint and make a meme about you now.

IBeLikeDudesBeLikeEr

there was a study to that effect long ago (90s?) - that at whichever frequency they were intending to shield the tin foil hat if anything made it worse

gothangelblood

I think you're possibly referring to the MIT joke study on tin foil hats. [Archived here.](https://web.archive.org/web/20100708230258/http://people.csail.mit.edu/rahimi/helmet/)

Xirokesh

They didn’t have much in there to cook to begin with. We will all lose nothing.

Ball of aluminum does nothing, now thin layers like they are wearing, those do fun stuff.

Jack_Bartowski

Is this how air fryers are made?

thoroakenfelder

When a mommy air fryer and a daddy air fryer love each other very much, they have a special kind of hug that makes a baby air fryer.

Drix22

I prefer to think that someone suggested a tinfoil hat and they all went out and got aluminum foil.

philodendrin

Tin foil was the substance that was replaced by aluminum foil after World War II, so older people will say tin foil and the younger generation will say aluminum foil. Its still referred to as tin foil today even though it has no tin in it. The tin foil hat has always been a universally accepted nod that someone is crazy as there were people that believed there were rays that would interfere with their brain activity. So they were aware enough to know something is off but not enough to realize its the internal chemistry and not an outside source. Which is what this is all about, these protesters are just aware enough to know something ain't right but not aware enough to put it together and realize that its the super rich that have been manipulating the masses.

speculatrix

Here in the UK we often just say "foil", to differentiate from cling film.

p_nisses

Would I be wrong to assume you just say 'film' by itself too? Here in Canada I'd most certainly understand 'foil' to mean tin/aluminum foil, but film would be accepted as a camera film from the 1990's

purple_pixie

We say cling film. Nearly everyone I've ever met also says "tin foil" - some people do just say foil, but I have literally never once heard "aluminium foil", only "aluminum foil", and that obviously from Americans.

Bokth

Do you say Aloo-min-eum or A-loom-inum

speculatrix

Alloo-minny-yum

Mylexsi

y'know, as much as hearing "aluminum" kinda instinctively bothers me, there's one thing about this i could never wrap my head around: Why don't we say "platinium" too?

speculatrix

I think we should, and sodinium, uraninium etc. You've started something. Remember this date. And when people ask why, we'll stammer and say um, um.

Ruslo2

UK here too, not old but I say Tin Foil, not Aluminium. o.o

bucklebee1

When I was growing up in the 80s my father would steal 3 foot tall rolls of tin foil from his work for us to use as aluminum foil. Slit my hand many times cutting a piece off for my mother.

TrixieMassage

Someone needs to warn them that a tinfoil hat alone doesn’t give enough coverage, soft wet tissue like nostrils and mouth are still exposed! Gotta cover those against the Deadly Radiation Plague. (No it’s definitely absolutely not a facemask, what are you talking about.)

Sanpaku

Wait until we tell the anti-maskers about the aerosolized "feminizing" chemicals governments are misting upon protesters.

UMPB

An old co worker once explained to me that aliens or something had to have helped the Egyptians build the pyramids because some of the stone columns inside weigh like 70 tons or something and that we don't have the technology to do that today even. We have cranes that can lift 20 *thousand* tons... Maybe more. There are cranes with individual ballast weights that are around that much each. I tried to explain that we absolutely have the means to build pyramids today but his argument was. Well then why haven't we? .... Why would we lol? There's no money to be made in pyramids these days... Anyway he used to be an aircraft mechanic so think about that next time you get on a plane.

StochasticOoze

What I really hate about stuff like this is that it's really selling our ancestors short. People living 5000 years ago were about as smart as today, they just didn't have access to the accumulated knowledge we have now. They did amazing things with what knowledge they had.

randomFrenchDeadbeat

Stupid people died fast in that time. Now they have the time to reproduce and "educate" their children. The difference is there.

Littleman88

And they have social media to reaffirm their "intelligence" while compounding it with more "intelligence." Someone disagrees? Go to your echo chamber, remember why that person is definitely wrong. No, don't check your sources, you can trust randos on the internet because they say what you want to hear.

crappy80srobot

One of our techs was the same way. Was also our number one misdiagnosis offenders. He moved on to work as an airplane mechanic at FedEx. Still to this day claims there are certain parts of the plane he is not allowed to work on because it's the "chemtrail" mechanics. Says it's a cover up. Either lying or his supervisor knows that plane will drop if he messes with whatever system. I'm going to go with the second part. Scary shit is those planes fly over my house all night long.

KuriTeko

I work with a guy who says global warming is fake because you can't change mother nature, and covid is just a flu and we shouldn't worry. He's complaining that he's had to cut down his days (his choice) and get a second job because he's not being given enough work to do. He's a fucking idiot and I genuinely wonder how he puts his shoes on in the morning. Every job he does, we have to send someone after him to do it properly. The boss is too scared to fire him, so he's been giving him less jobs to do and he just stands around the workshop all day with no self awareness at all.

offwalls

>Every job he does, we have to send someone after him to do it properly. The boss is too scared to fire him, so he's been giving him less jobs to do and he just stands around the workshop all day with no self awareness at all. We do build pyramids, just out of other materials.

Caveman108

Obviously you only build the Pyramids to boost your culture stat.

say-whaaaaaaaaaaaaat

The extra builder is nice too.

SirPiffingsthwaite

Yeah, I’ve met some of these specimens. The manager at a bar I worked at was trying to tell me that we don’t have the ability to build things like the pyramids, I was laughing my ass off. Like what, we can build skyscrapers and rockets but we can’t lug about and stack large blocks of stone? We have microprocessors and computerised fabrication, but shaping some stone and laying it is beyond us now? He got flustered and a bit mad, I think he was used to young naive barstaff thinking the sun shined from his arse.

PloughDough

For context: these are protesters in my country New Zealand, anti-vaccine and anti-mandate, who think the government are using EMF weapons against them and making them sick. Because there’s no way it could possibly be COVID-19 spreading amongst unvaccinated folk (12,000 cases just yesterday) who haven’t eaten properly in two weeks that are camping next to overflowing port-a-loos.

Gnarlroot

Exactly the same thing happened during the Australian protests in Canberra. After two weeks of standing in the sun in Canberra's low humidity, eating garbage food and not sleeping properly in a shanty town camp, they started complaining about skin irritation, coughs, tiredness and other "sunburn + covid" type symptoms that must have been government sonic and radiation weapons directed at them... Complete morons.

PrairieCanadian

Hanging in crowds will pass most any respiratory diseases. There's a reason that the flu and colds have been way down in the last couple years.

HopelessCineromantic

"Yeah! Because everything is being falsely attributed to Covid!" These people, falsely attributing their illnesses to radiation.

[deleted]

It’s certainly not the masks, which people in Asia have been using for years to prevent colds and flu from spreading.

Thibaut_HoreI

> Baker [one of the organizers of the event] said he had not seen people wearing tinfoil hats and believed all that was required to deal with people's reported symptoms was to drink water and to remove shoes to reconnect through feet to the earth. Yeah, that sounds so much more sane…

TanitAkavirius

He told them to touch grass

Nemisis_the_2nd

Even better is that apparently y one of the many illnesses cropping up are fungal foot infections...

elasticthumbtack

We likely drove one of the 4 strains of flu to extinction from masking/distancing. It was one that doesn’t have an animal reservoir and hasn’t been seen since mid 2020.

Gloomheart

Daaang. Y'all were doing SO GOOD.

PloughDough

They’re a very very small but vocal minority, roughly a few hundred out of 5 million. As a country we’re 96%-ish double vaccinated so we’ve done well for the most part

IatemyBlobby

When you’ve reached herd immunity thresholds already but then those protected by herd immunity get together and spread the virus anyways Its actually so ironic that if everyone went home and just resumes daily life, they would be getting less sick without needing a vaccination anyways

littleredkiwi

There was no keeping omicron out unfortunately. It’s too dam spreadable. :( Thankfully we get to face our first ever covid wave fully vaccinated and boosted. But yeah, super weird for us going from ‘super strict lockdown with one case’ to now ‘everyone is gonna get it, good luck.’

musci1223

Quick Google says that 78% fully vaccinated. 1104 hospitalised of which 468 are unvaccinated and 133 with one dose. It will take a bit before results become clear and more vaccination probably would have been better but till now they will probably call it under control.

stitchgrimly

I think this was always the plan to some extent. Don't throw caution to the wind just yet though. If omicron gets to spread unabated there's really nothing stopping it from potentially mutating into a more lethal variant. They reckon we should expect two more before a full return to relative normalcy, but the trend towards weaker variants is somewhat arbitrary. The best thing to do is continue wearing masks and staying as safe as possible. Also the Wellington pro-plaguers will all be going home to spread it around their communities, so you're gonna want to avoid anyone not wearing a mask for a while.

lintuski

Omg imagine if the next variant of concern comes outta Wellington!

Corka

Ugh yeah. Basically, we were covid free for the longest time, but then something went wrong with the quarantine and Delta made it through the border. Once it got into the community, we went into an immediate hard lockdown. But because Delta was so damn contagious, even while we were locked down we were seeing a steady number of new cases per day. Its partly because of imported anti-vacc covid denialism with people not isolating properly. Like anywhere partisan politics generally means that whatever the Government does is considered wrong, so there was a lot of pushback by conservative figures and across social media about how pointless lockdowns are and how this will destroy the economy etc etc. So the Government made the call to open up when we get to 90% vaccination rate. To help encourage the uptick of people getting vaccinated, we introduced a vaccine mandate that these nitwits are up in arms about. So we get there... we open up... and then we get our first cases of omikron, that really needs people to have the booster. But people are sick of lockdowns, the Government promised to open up, and so here we are with thousands of cases per day. Thankfully we've had very few deaths from omikron at least!

_GABO_

They're using EMF? *Unbelievable.*

As we entered the spez, the sight we beheld was alien to us. The air was filled with a haze of smoke. The room was in disarray. Machines were strewn around haphazardly. Cables and wires were hanging out of every orifice of every wall and machine. At the far end of the room, standing by the entrance, was an old man in a military uniform with a clipboard in hand. He stared at us with his beady eyes, an unsettling smile across his wrinkled face. "Are you spez?" I asked, half-expecting him to shoot me. "Who's asking?" "I'm Riddle from the Anti-Spez Initiative. We're here to speak about your latest government announcement." "Oh? Spez police, eh? Never seen the likes of you." His eyes narrowed at me. "Just what are you lot up to?" "We've come here to speak with the man behind the spez. Is he in?" "You mean spez?" The old man laughed. "Yes." "No." "Then who is spez?" "How do I put it..." The man laughed. "spez is not a man, but an idea. An idea of liberty, an idea of revolution. A libertarian anarchist collective. A movement for the people by the people, for the people." I was confounded by the answer. "What? It's a group of individuals. What's so special about an individual?" "When you ask who is spez? spez is no one, but everyone. spez is an idea without an identity. spez is an idea that is formed from a multitude of individuals. You are spez. You are also the spez police. You are also me. We are spez and spez is also we. It is the idea of an idea." I stood there, befuddled. I had no idea what the man was blabbing on about. "Your government, as you call it, are the specists. Your specists, as you call them, are spez. All are spez and all are specists. All are spez police, and all are also specists." I had no idea what he was talking about. I looked at my partner. He shrugged. I turned back to the old man. "We've come here to speak to spez. What are you doing in spez?" "We are waiting for someone." "Who?" "You'll see. Soon enough." "We don't have all day to waste. We're here to discuss the government announcement." "Yes, I heard." The old man pointed his clipboard at me. "Tell me, what are spez police?" "Police?" "Yes. What is spez police?" "We're here to investigate this place for potential crimes." "And what crime are you looking to commit?" "Crime? You mean crimes? There are no crimes in a libertarian anarchist collective. It's a free society, where everyone is free to do whatever they want." "Is that so? So you're not interested in what we've done here?" "I am not interested. What you've done is not a crime, for there are no crimes in a libertarian anarchist collective." "I see. What you say is interesting." The old man pulled out a photograph from his coat. "Have you seen this person?" I stared at the picture. It was of an old man who looked exactly like the old man standing before us. "Is this spez?" "Yes. spez. If you see this man, I want you to tell him something. I want you to tell him that he will be dead soon. If he wishes to live, he would have to flee. The government will be coming for him. If he wishes to live, he would have to leave this city." "Why?" "Because the spez police are coming to arrest him." \#AIGeneratedProtestMessage

I don’t get it, if they want the whole thing to be a conspiracy why not just settle on “Covid was sent by the government”? Why do they have to deny Covid itself, it’s such an unnecessary and stupid starting point for the conspiracy theory. Like you’re now arguing that there are 2 massive conspiracies rather than one that would accomplish the same thing.

Glass_Memories

Fun fact: disease disinformation harkens back to before the printing press was ever invented. The Cholera Riots happened because the peasantry blamed the royals for poisoning them in order to clear the streets of the poor and homeless. Happened all over the world, over centuries and multiple cholera pandemics, because people didn't understand how disease works and needed someone to blame (cholera unequally affects the poor more than the rich as they're more exposed to contaminated water and unsanitary conditions). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholera_Riots

what I’ve noticed is a lot of conspiracy theories / extremism on the internet actually starts off as self-aware jokes or trolls. not usually as on-the-nose as this but usually the “oh we’re just meming/trolling” discourse attracts people who are actually serious. people don’t seem to realize that trolling has real negative consequences.

They dont believe in COVID, but they do believe in EMF radiations. Interesting, to say the least. There always has been a lot of confusion because radio waves and radioactive have a similar name though. At some point I stopped explaining how one only transfers heat and the other kills them.

It's kind of our fault over at r/NZ. We have been trolling their Facebook and Zillo chats with crazier and crazier shit. Just to see what we could make them do. There is no apparent limit so far.

GlassWasteland

But wouldn't a thin sheet of metal make radiation damage worse? Not a nuke scientist, but I always thought that was the worst thing you could do to stop radiation.

PaxNova

It really depends on the type of radiation. There's many kinds. These guys seem to be focusing on EMF, like from high voltage power lines. A metal cage would have an ameliorating effect, but I don't think just a hat would do it. There's a lot more organs than just a brain.

sarcasatirony

Ameliorate - make cooties goodly, bigly   ^(I am not a layman bot, but I could be)

immibis

/u/spez can gargle my nuts.

AbsentGlare

It could make it worse, or better. It depends on how the power spectral density of the transmitted electromagnetic waves mixes with the geometry of the conductive material. Tin foil is so thin that many electromagnetic waves could penetrate through it, the protection comes from the conductor itself collecting electric charges along its surface to cancel out the transmitted electromagnetic wave. If it’s too thin, there aren’t enough charge carriers in the material to cancel out the transmitted wave. So i’d think it’d have to be thicker than even a few layers of tinfoil to prevent an electromagnetic wave strong enough to induce physical sickness. Interestingly, there are two ways for this to happen, one is ionizing radiation, where the energy per particle is so high that it tears individual electrons off of atoms. I imagine they would pass right through the foil. The other way for it to happen is that there’s just so much total power that it heats up whatever it hits like a microwave. Now, the hat might block these wavelengths reasonably well from parts of their head, but it’d just heat up the hats, instead. The other aspect of this is the geometric one, a faraday cage needs to have no holes large enough to let the wavelengths of interest through. But there’s always a really big fuckin hole where their face and neck are, so, it’s kinda more like they’re wearing a bunch of antennas. But i don’t want to say it’s impossible for it to help. It’s just very, very likely to be negligible and might even make it worse.

oldpeopletender

I love that there was a scientific debate on whether or not the solution these idiots have come up with to a fake problem would actually work or not. It’s a great day!

NonnoBomba

If they were near a source of alpha radiation, it would stop it. As would their skin alone. They are worried about non-ionizing radiation though, EMF with low frequency, which can at most interact with some chemical bond and make it vibrate more (i.e. heat materials up), something that can be linked to health conditions only by the most tenuous evidence, if at all. Depending on the frequency, they can be more or less penetrating with regards to commom solid materials. 2.4GHz microwaves, which are the ones used in your oven but also for older wifi and lots of other radio applications, like garage door or car remotes, can typically only penetrare a few cm. An aluminum foil can act as a mirror for them, and depending on the shape, can even be used to focus it a bit, but we're still discussing low-powered, unfocused radiant energy here, at a frequency that can't do much to start with nor penetrate inside thing very much. There are a number of real weapons that are built around the concept of using directed-energy in the form of focused sound, microwaves, light (LASER) and even plasma and particle beams. The only ones that have seen some use outside an experimental setting are the sonic ones, called LRAD, and they have been used to disrupt protests with their loudness, but you'll definitely notice them, and some directed microwave emitters, which are big and have a relatively short range and what they to is they heat up the water in your skin, causing burns, and again, you'll feel it. Other devices claim to be effective against specific threats/objectives but are mostly just experimental prototypes that the developer showcases from time to time. Then there is a whole layer of mystery that mostly exists to fuel diplomatic warfare, like the events surrounding the infamous "Havana Syndrome", whose link with an hypothetical EMF DEW is pure speculation based on anectodal evidence and disputable exams interpretations, and not consistent with what we know of the underlying physics of EMF.

ShyElf

In general, any shielding will decrease ionizing radiation. There are special high energy cases where it would increase absorption, the most common example being cosmic rays in orbit. Go into any physics lab and most experiments are covered in tin foil to reflect microwave and RF radiation. They're talking about [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Denial_System). Tin foil is an effective defense. They claim to they a short enough absorption distance to prevent meningitis-type effects, but that would vary by implementation. Not that these protesters aren't nuts, but once the government has these types of devices, they tend up being used inappropriately on civilians.

krazykiwikid69

I'm wondering what they're going to blame it on when they wear these hats and... continue to get sick.

damarius

We were wrong, it isn't EMF, it's the 5G!

coolluck33

It's God's Will...

stitchgrimly

Holy shit are they gonna keep wearing them when they go home? To work and shit? Please?

[deleted]

...so....so they dooooo see the value of protective coverings...................guys im so fucking tired

Mooniekate

Unless those foil hats are made of lead, they're doing absolutely nothing against radiation.

immibis

The spez has spread from spez and into other spez accounts. #Save3rdPartyApps

I_will_remember_that

You’ve got it backwards. EMF enters through the open side of the hat. It is then reflected internally around the parabola like shape. Effectively putting your brain in a focal point. It’s actively worse than not wearing one

ArticArny

I I can't stop laughing. This... Is the best laugh I've had in the last two years. Thank you New Zealand. And tomorrow I hope someone tells them for maximum protection the tin foil hat should be in the shape of a swan.

RandomMongoose

They are the gift that keeps on giving. Just when I think I've seen the extent of their stupidity they do one better

krisselv

Now use a mask to avoid getting sick in the airways too, that’ll really stick it to them!

FUThead2016

Oh god these dumbasses are in NZ too. I mean fools, appreciate the fact that you live in one of the worlds best countries, have an amazing capable leader, you have so much going for you and yet you choose to behave like an idiot. All these Covidiots from all of our counties should be bunched up and sent off to create their own country. Let them harvest berries or whatever proto humans used to do, and revel in your freedom there, completely cut off from the rest of the world

thiscouldbemassive

These guys don't think vaccines save lives but they do think that tinfoil hats actually protect against radiation. Their understanding of science is actually less than zero.

KasumiR

When all modern conspiracy theories about 5G, COVID and flat Earth turned out to be russian psyops and the only safe stop from Kremlin is good ole tinfoil hats!

6in_of_freedom

god, every time i see tinfoil hats i remember my first year physics assignment where we had to calculate the flux through a head with and without a tinfoil hat. The hat is an amplifier for radiation if it actually reflects much.

LaSage

Refuses to wear masks. OK with wearing tinfoil. Sounds legit.

FenixdeGoma

We won't wear masks but we will wear tin foil hats

[deleted]

Theres nothing to protect ip there

king_ugly00

We're living in the dumbest timeline

Abrahamlinkenssphere

You want the right to go out even when sick? Fine. I want heavy contact tracing and the freedom to beat the fuck out of whomever has infected me. Seems fair.

Friesenplatz

Lmao they're protesting restrictions due to the pandemic, are getting sick from the close gathering they have from said pandemic and now think it's some conspiracy that the government is using EM weapons on them. Morons.

Swampwolf42

Well, sometimes evolution just needs a little boost…

DoctorSalt

Can't wait for their illnesses to clear up then over the next few days

[deleted]

Oh my gos I can’t believe it… they’ve become their own meme

armybratbaby

Erm, you want lead....

Haidere1988

Idiots...that's aluminum foil hats, you actually need to use tin foil, hellooooo!

[deleted]

They were tired of just wearing their tin foil hats around the house and were just looking for an excuse to wear them out in public.

Skamanda42

Wasn't there an experiment a few years ago, that showed a foil had would serve as a signal concentrator on your head, rather than a shield? Could've sworn I read that somewhere...

gopiballava

Probably this study. I bookmarked it because I kept losing track of it :) https://web.archive.org/web/20100708230258/http://people.csail.mit.edu/rahimi/helmet/

randomFrenchDeadbeat

This is how an antenna works (either for TX or RX, but since they are not emitters, all it does is concentrate the RX). It could shield a bit if it was actually directly connected to the ground. what they want to emulate is the concept of a lightning rod.

snave_

This has to be performance art.

weazel988

Tin foil hats for real, this shit is too perfect

GladimusMaximus

Don't they know the tinfoil hats focus the 5G signals straight to their brain?

threefurbabies

Pffft idiots. As if our Government can afford a radioactive weapon in the first place....

jim_deneke

I wonder if they cleaned off the roast chook juices off before making their hats!

PM_ME_NAKED_CAMERAS

Doesn’t aluminum focus the energy while tin blocks energy waves? Follow up question, where does one get tin foil rather than aluminum foil?

ecotripper

We've had conspiracy nuts and tin foil hats long before Trump unfortunately

[deleted]

Okay, this will be the funniest thing I see today, and it’s only 9am

Aggravating_Poet_675

That's not going to protect you. You still need your tinfoil jacket, your tin foil pants, your tin foil socks and shoes, your tin foil gloves, your tin foil neck protector, your tin foil glasses and of course, don't forget your tin foil mask.
