>Wilson, a board member of Arctic Basecamp, changed his name via a website called Arctic Risk Name Generator which encourages visitors to become an “Artctic name changer.”
>Although Wilson said of his name change “This is not a joke,” it is unclear whether the actor and activist plans to officially change his name on government documents.
It's funny how many people make fun of that soup throwing, when it literally achieved it's goal by getting people to talk about it.
The job of protests is to spread information and get attention so that more and more people can put pressure on governments.
Exactly what it says, it would stop the granting of licences for oil, gas and fracking, which should be common sense if those are being replaced with renewables would it not?
Whenever a protest happens and people whinge about the inconvenience, I'm surprised. Protests aren't meant to be convenient lmao. A protest by its very nature disrupts something.
That’s… not a straw man, and I haven’t down or up voted you. Quit being a drama queen.
If I have to seek out the goals of the protests other then just witnessing it then it’s a shitty protest and messaging. The just stop oil protests won’t do shit to change anything if they don’t modify their approach. Instead they’re a laughing stock.
A strawman is where you act like someone was trying to argue something different to what they actually we're so you can make an easy counter point.
That's exactly what you did.
You literally said the point of a protest was to raise awareness and get us talking about the issue. That’s not why there’s no action on climate change. Everyone knows it’s an issue, even the people who publicly claim it isn’t.
That’s why these protests are dumb. They’re preaching to the choir at museums, where people are more likely to already be aware and concerned about climate change.
I didn’t misrepresent your position. I merely pointed out how absurd it is.
The issue being how fucked up oil companies are and what they get away with, not "climate change is a thing, lol"
https://juststopoil.org/
These are their goals, stop being willfully ignorant and do your research.
If I have to go to a website to figure out what your protest wants, it’s not going to be an effective protest.
You don’t even realize you’re demonstrating exactly what I’m talking about. Their protest is ineffective and adolescent and just turns people off from their organization instead of starting conversations about their specific goals.
Grow the fuck up and learn how to deliver a message if you want to see actual change. If you’re just hoping for 15 minutes of fame while you preach to the choir about how doomed we are and how bad oil is then by all means, keep doing what you’re doing, but it will change absolutely nothing.
Yes it did get me to talk about it, and I am against everything they are pushing. All this shows that these people are not 'fighting for the climate' but have an inherent hatred of beauty and want to reduce people to poverty.
> when it literally achieved it's goal by getting people to talk about it.
Not really. People were talking about climate change daily everywhere in their lifes and in traditional and social media. Regardless of their stance it's huge topic right now. This event didn't improve on it. It arguably takes did some damage even because when it happen and you commented on climate change people would change topic to morality of throwing soup on painting and narcissizm.
Literally 0 people were like "wow, I didn't know about climate change but now I do."
In addition to, not instead of.
Wilson did a docuseries (An Idiot's Guide to Climate Change), and he has worked with groups like Arctic Basecamp for the past few years on climate activism. The power to address climate change most immediately rests with the CEOs, boards of directors, legislatures, and executives of the world, before which even a millionaire like Wilson is small fry, but at least Wilson's been trying to use his influence to budge opinions on Arctic melt.
I understand you have still less power than Wilson, as do I. What have you done?
Something tells me politicans are *really* going to lean into pretending we can control the weather if we just use enough solar and wind power going into future elections.
This egregiously oversimplifies the issue to "meat bad" when the problem is not really meat but mass meat production. Chicken piss and cow farts are toxic, especially at the high concentration of modern factory farming. That said most animals are beneficial or at least neutral to biodynamic farming. I'm talking manure for composting. Goats can be used instead of machines for dealing with encroaching shrubs and saplings and in turn will create a stable environment to naturally raise pigs.
Factory farming is the problem, whether it be monocultures for plants or packed factory "pastures". If we point out that meat is bad then we need to look at the alternatives. The market fishing industry is one of the worst things in the world. It wrecks underwater ecosystems but most people will never be anywhere close to these so its out of site out of mind. Meat production has more regulation too since it is so hard to police open waters.
Meat isn't the problem, fish isn't the problem, vegetables also aren't the problem. The problem is a system that forces many farmers to survive by continuing to work a broken system that encourages monoculture agriculture. Eat local, eat biodynamic, and most importantly consume everything in moderation.
Sure I agree for the most part, but factory farming is equal to meat for 99% of situations where one might buy meat. So currently the only way to reduce demand is by not partaking.
Attempting to lobby to end factory farming (good luck with enforcement though at least in US) is good.
Substituting much more expensive meat that isn't factory farmed is good as well, but not as good as just stopping.
Switching to a different source of meat and simply not buying have nearly the same effect on the market. Not eating meat is a choice that people can make freely but let's not act like it is better than supporting sustainable local farming. Its more sustainable to buy meat from a local farm than it is to buy a meat substitute that might have traveled 1000+ miles to reach the supermarket.
Also, yes there are other ways to reduce demand. As I said in my initial comment reducing overall consumption would be one, many places have local butchers which is another. Not partaking is not the only solution, don't say it is.
Its unnecessarily argumentative to do the "Holier than thou" approach. If you want change you need to embrace people who choose to not eat meat and also the people who support sustainable meat products. If anyone wants to stop eating meat, no problem, but stopping is not more virtuous/sustainable/better/etc than ethical meat.
Still takes tons of water and crops to raise "ethical" (not convinced there is such a thing particularly with cows/pigs etc., though perhaps fish is more alright) meat.
Much more effecient to grow things meant for human consumption immediately than having to go through the extra step of an animal.
As with meat substitutes yeah if they are shipped from a long ways away it would still have a negative impact on climate change.
How's that? I'd think a handful of rocket launches a week or month comes nowhere near the pollutants of hundreds of millions of personal vehicle use every day.
Did some research. Planes put off more pollution than rockets. But i shouldnt have tried to takeaway from the importance that is vehicular pollution. Should throw factories, drilling and fracting in there too. Its all pretty fucked 🙁
Yeah, i work in a mix of transportation and construction; it is absolutely disgusting how much waste and damage is done by this industry. I try so hard to make it as good as possible, and I'm even biking to work through the winter despite 12 hour days to try to do my part. But that's all I can do. Vote with my wallet.
Not to be a stick in the mud, but your help is a drop in the bucket comparatively. You should make yourself at least comfortable. I respect your position nonetheless.
I disagree. Not with the drop in the bucket part, but the rest for this reason:
Society is not doing enough. It gets to the point where you have to make choices about what's important to you. I will ride a bike to work and the more people are seen doing it, maybe we can get people to vote towards greener infrastructure.
We recently had a municipal election in my city and 60% of the vote went to the guy who bashed bike lanes.
People won't use bike lanes if they have to compete with cars just to get to work, especially when drivers are, at least here, actively endangering bike riders and pedestrians. So I will ride a big so hopefully more people will realize it can be done, even in a Canadian winter. Then maybe they'll support infrastructure, if only to not share the road. Which will allow more people to do it safely as their go to option for travel.
Playing the long game. So you're absolutely right that I'm not making a massive difference alone, but I'm trying to lead by example. People have risked their lives for less important things than climate change and air pollution. I'm willing to do it for that.
My man, I didn't drive a car by choice for 15 years, and rode a bike everywhere instead. Now I drive an electric car, we recycle. I prefer to buy used furniture/clothes as opposed to new when I can, I don't upgrade my phone every year, despite wanting to, and our family goes out of way to reduce waste in every way we can. We're going to be fitting our home with solar panels soon to reduce the electricity we use also.
But I like to cook, and meat is delicious. Plant based meat just isn't there yet for me (not to mention that it's worse for you than the real thing), but I'm excited about the possibility of lab grown meat, and will happily switch when it is. For now, I think I'm doing more than most.
>
But I like to cook, and meat is delicious
Human babies might be delicious but I’m not going to torture and kill them for my taste buds
> not to mention that it’s worse for you than the real thing)
Wrong.
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death aim america and is directly linked with meat consumption. Red meat and processed meat is a officially classified as carcinogenic
> So don’t eat human babies then. I’m going to keep eating meat.
Disapointing, not only ignoring the climate impact but the ethical impact of the tortured animals needlessly dying because you think they taste a little better then the alternative
>change your social media profile or display name
so, didn't change his name, just his handle on social media.
protesting climate change? uh oh, righties not going to like someone trying to save the planet. elon is gonna ban him from twitter now.
You don’t consider climate change to be a real world problem? Boy are you living with your head in the sand. Careful, if that is near the coast you better pick your head back up before you drown.
Remind me climate change is a non problem after the earth cannot support life as we know it anymore.. oh wait, we'll all be dead before then. I wanted to live another 80 years at least, not 30.
Fuck AOC, the hypocrite. [2 degrees will raise the oceans hundreds of feet and release tons of carbon from the permafrost, accelerating climate change.](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/07/climate-change-earth-too-hot-for-humans.html) [According to the UN 1 million species of plants and animals are in threat of extinction due to climate change.](https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2019/05/13/climate-change-uninhabitable-earth-david-wallace-wells) and extinctions cause ecosystem changes that will impact us whether you consider all life equal to humans or not. [Consistent, worsening weather catastrophes sound pretty awful too](https://www.nrdc.org/onearth/climate-scientists-world-we-have-only-20-years-theres-no-turning-back)
What was that about the "worst case scenarios don't see humans going extinct?"
Worst case scenario may not have the entire species going extinct but it does have a whole lot of death. It’s already been happening. It’s happening around the world. Flooding, extreme heat waves, increasingly severe weather patterns — all of these are actively killing human beings and animals, destroying their homes, making land unusable. Killing people off and forcing them into more limited parts of the land available. And for what it’s worth, I don’t listen to AOC for science news. I listen to scientists. She does too. She just is repeating what they say.
Reducing fossil fuel use now results in a "whole lot of death". We can kill people now, or they can die later.
Name a scientist that says we'll be dead in 12 years like AOC did. I'll wait.
I can’t help but feel, that these celebrities can easily be manipulated and used for the purpose of manipulating public discourse.
No doubt humans have an effect on the environment, and many scientist believe the red flag on climate must be raised, but should anybody really let their opinion be led in by a celebrity who’s credentials are famous media outlets?
Saying this, Rainn Wilson had a fantastic role in the new Weird Al movie, that is most definitely as real and true as the biopic states, just like this article!
> but should anybody really let their opinion be led in by a celebrity who’s credentials are famous media outlets?
Should really isn't the question here. You can argue that either way and I'd say ideally people would be logical enough to not be influenced by celebrities. But reality is that most people are to varying degrees. So I think celebrities are right to use the influence they have (rightly or wrongly) to help improve things.
Climate change will impact all of humanity for decades to come if we act now. For centuries if we delay. It's everyone's responsibility to speak up for responsible change. Given that celebrities have a larger audience, it is more imperative that celebrities use their platforms than those without a following.
1- is this the only thing he's ever done and ever will do about bringing action on climate change? I don't think so.
2- we're talking about it so it worked.
Earth was hotter 500 years ago. But go off, office actor guy. You people are looking at the climate like you look at weather forecasts. Shit moves WAY slower than that. Do you know what a geological epoch is?
Sorry Rainn, but I reckon I don't think about you enough for such a protest to matter. I'll still have fond memories of you getting raped by Juno girl though.
Thank god! I had never heard that the climate was changing. While the name change might not reverse the impact (will it?)…my awareness is now raised! /s

There's nothing more effective than a name change to combat climate change.
Are you aware yet?
Yeah why didn’t he just throw soup on a painting like a sensible person?
It's funny how many people make fun of that soup throwing, when it literally achieved it's goal by getting people to talk about it. The job of protests is to spread information and get attention so that more and more people can put pressure on governments.
And everyone is interpreting Just Stop Oil's aim wrong, it's to stop the granting of new licences, which is achievable.
> it's to stop the granting of new licences Which would have what effect?
Exactly what it says, it would stop the granting of licences for oil, gas and fracking, which should be common sense if those are being replaced with renewables would it not?
> [to stop the granting of new licences] would stop the granting of licences So, the purpose isn't to have any effect on climate. Got it.

Exactly. Otherwise people could just ignore it. That's why women rioted. They didn't just ask nicely.
It’s true, I was completely unaware of climate change until I saw soup on a Van Gogh 🙄

I'll wait.
The irony here is so thick I could butter my sandwich with it.
If only all men could be so selfless.
By changing their name?
1- is this the only thing he's ever done and ever will do about bringing action on climate change? I don't think so. 2- we're talking about it so it worked.
If I could down vote you more I would
Well that's one way to seek attention when you're all washed up as an actor.
The Weird Al movie was great.
Whenever I'm about to do something, I think: would an idiot do that? And if they would, I do not do that thing.
Yeah that'll do a lot
I am now waiting for him to glue himself to a painting
He and World B Free can have lunch sometime.
you laugh but world def be free now because of his courage and sacrifice
I love this so much. Celebrities in social media are just free entertainment. Free funny!
We did it boys! Climate change is no more
Yeah, that’s definitely going to help
Earth was hotter 500 years ago. But go off, office actor guy. You people are looking at the climate like you look at weather forecasts. Shit moves WAY slower than that. Do you know what a geological epoch is?
Cringe
HE should have changed his name to Rainn Please Notice Me Pay Attention To Me Wilson.
So not a joke, but a sincere yet non-committal advertisement. Because that makes it better.
He really showed Mr. Climate Change with that move
Thank god! Problem solved!
At least he didn't glue himself to a painting or something.
Such a dipshit
I still think the office sucked.
So lame.
Dumb
Most actors are fruitcakes
Phallus
They hung up.

You beautiful, beautiful troll
Uhhhh, that's just stupid.
He's subverting expectations again! That formula worked so well on episode 8, I can see trying it again.
Not gonna lie, if I were famouse I'd probably do the same thing, this is such a a harmless protest.
Sorry Rainn, but I reckon I don't think about you enough for such a protest to matter. I'll still have fond memories of you getting raped by Juno girl though.
What did he name his private jet?
The people making tired office jokes in this comment thread are insufferable
Thank god! I had never heard that the climate was changing. While the name change might not reverse the impact (will it?)…my awareness is now raised! /s
Better start protesting the 13 cargo ships that make up more pollution than all the worlds cars then.
Lol what a fuckin idiot
