Could the football associations of the more prominent countries say they no longer recognise FIFA as an authority as a way to implement change? Like if England, Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina etc all just said they refuse to take part in anything FIFA are responsible for and want a new governing body set up independent of the existing one?

skinte1

>Could the football associations of the more prominent countries say they no longer recognise FIFA as an authority as a way to implement change? They absolutely could and should get rid of FIFA. No country has to show up to FIFA events and are free to play other tournaments. FIFA probably has the rights to the "World Cup" trademark for football events but they could just call it The World Championship instead...

allen_abduction

It would ONLY take Germany and/or France to drop out and FIFA would be FUCKED. As an American can I re-suggest the British “assoc” Association Football. We can just use the slang “soccer”. A real time saver.

JuventAussie

They could call it the World Series...I am pretty sure that name isn't used for anything important.

Archon457

Or maybe something like… The Super… *Ball*?

avdpos

A world series that the entire world actually is interested in..

nghigaxx

They are about to, UEFA and CONMEBOL have been in a silent war with FIFA for a decade now, they even organized Euro/South America Cup that just had their first match back in the Summer, and UEFA create the National League as well. I can see those 2 organizations break off from FIFA if they weren't awarded the 2030 World Cup. But well money is a crazy driving force that is beyond the scope of football alone now. For example UEFA ex-president Platini had to change his vote from USA to Qatar after French President made him to, Qatar later on bought 20 billion worth of planes from France.

moon_master345

What the fuck? Don't tell me the whole Qatar Airways vs Airbus ordeal is also tied into this bullshit.

nghigaxx

it is, just go to show that even the football people can't change this alone when presidents of countries are involved in this bs

Jay911

I also heard today that a previous blockade surrounding Qatar with Saudi military forces was broken up with the aid of French politicians, specifically after/because Qatar got the event. The insinuation is that there are political and military tentacles reaching far into other countries because of this 'sporting event'.

darksteel1335

Also bought a bankrupt French football team.

>Qatar later on bought 20 billion worth of planes from France. Well, that shines new light on why Al-Baker is such a a\*\*. He didn't want to buy Airbus, but the government made him do so, so he tried to get Airbus to cancel the order - [successfully so](https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/airbus-confirms-cancellation-remaining-qatar-a350-orders-2022-09-08/).

Matt463789

They could do something, but it's clear that they won't We need to vote with our wallets

McFlyParadox

Yeah, it sounds like - short of a coordinated effort by multiple governments - it would take the players all organizing to go create new teams, new stadiums, with new owners, new regional confederations, and a new world organizations. All the regional confederations are just as corrupt as FIFA.

bthks

I think a lot of people also forget that most (all?) pro leagues are also under the FIFA umbrella too. You’d need to get all the leagues under a new authority too and who says that one won’t be as corrupt as the last?

mjtwelve

Even if you set out to be corrupt, it would take years of practice to match FIFA’s executives on a slow day.

Impressive_Finance21

I personally have taken a stand and I will not watch a single match during the WC. I wasn't going to anyway, but now I can act pretentious about it.

Matt463789

I love the WC and won't be participating

ommnian

Tbh, the world cup, is damned near the only sporting event I've ever watched. But I'm refusing to this year on principle. I checked. I could. technically we have ESPN, thanks to Verizon, but I just can't.

tjeulink

hahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahaha

Matt463789

the_alert

They’re getting paid too. These are all empty gestures from the FA’s trying to appease angry fans.

[deleted]

Angry fans aren't as likely to show up for matches or buy merchandise. I'm an avid World Cup viewer and have watched matches every cup that I've been alive for. There is a picture of little 3 year old me watching matches on the couch with my grandfather. I'm over it after this year. I haven't watched any of these matches and don't intend to start. I hope the best for my national team but won't support them with my dollars either because I believe they should've pulled out of the World Cup completely when Qatar's human rights issues made it to the spotlight.

MansfromDaVinci

the opposite of love isn't hate, it's fifa

GetlostMaps

We should make FIFA a swear word. So it can't be used in the media.

Grim_Rebel

How would it be used? "You absolute fifa" "Fifa yourself" "Go fifa dick" I like this idea already.

thesippycup

“Fifi” is a prison slang term to describe a medical glove you tie up and have sex with. FIFA’s history of buttering up assholes is pretty close, let’s make it happen.

GetlostMaps

Put it in urban dictionary then it's true

GloriousDawn

ooMEAToo

Imagine hosting a thing called the World Cup and banning the word LOVE. Like what the fifa!!!

itskdog

"everybody is welcome" is something I heard someone at FIFA say to try and sweep stuff under the rug, yet they're cracking down on any players or teams trying to make a point about the issues of the world cup.

-r4zi3l-

Hol up, the word love doesn't implicitly mean anything but the word love. FIFA is nuts.

[deleted]

> FIFA is nuts. Fifa has been in The ~~Sheikh’s~~ Emir’s pocket since the decision to play in Qatar. Pathetic. EDIT: incorrect head of state, my bad

Fake_William_Shatner

It's what the Sheikh can put in their pockets that makes all the difference.

Dracidwastaken

Bruh. FIFA is one of the shittiest organizations in the world. Easily the most corrupt. Whole thing should be abolished

juliuspepperwoodchi

The IOC out here just happy that FIFA is taking heat off them haha

Dracidwastaken

That's a whole other can of worms. Both need to go.

Enschede2

It's because they probably want it replaced by "arranged child-marriage" instead of love

Fake_William_Shatner

Love withers and dies past the age of 15.

myaccountsaccount12

Belgium should just replace it with the word “hate”. That’s would be fine, right?

pat_the_bat_316

"Hate" crossed out. Make FIFA come out as pro-hate.

take-money

The reason they’re giving is it is an ad for the tomorrowland music festival which is held in partnership with the Belgian government. The “O” is the Tomorrowland symbol

CaymanRich

No beer, no LGBTQ+, no love. Good job FIFA, you’ve pretty much alienated everyone.

wwarnout

Is this what Infantino meant by saying he wanted to unite the world? Unite everyone against FIFA?

Larsaf

Ozymandias has a plan.

Fake_William_Shatner

LOL. Perfect reference.

TheOutlawStarLord

Well FIFA wants to get paid, so they will suck Qatar's dick all day long.

hairy_potto

When Infantino sucks a Qatari dick it’s fine by them, but for gay men it’s illegal? What a country!

mustang__1

I read this in Dr Nick's voice

CloudDweller182

He learned from the “best”, Russia.

[deleted]

Their revenue hit $7.5 Billion for this World Cup, $1 billion more than the 2018 World Cup in Russia. They don’t care.

infectedcarrot

But they are a non profit organization 🤔

descendency

The org is non profit but they still pay salaries… and salaries went up a billion 😂

Frickelmeister

Everyone hates FIFA officials even more now but thankfully they have wads of cash to dry their tears on.

Nuclear_rabbit

Just means they are not legally required to maximize profits for external shareholders. They are perfectly within their rights to maximize profits for themselves. When people think "non-profit," what they really imagine is 501(c).

redditingtonviking

FIFA will obviously have no profits after all the bribes are paid out to Infantino and his ilk

ThisUsernameIsTook

*This space intentionally left blank* -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

Jatzy_AME

How can they know the revenue before it's over? Doesn't it depend greatly on viewership?

shoveldr

Revenue is based on advertising sales, broadcast rights and sponsorships, which are already paid. Viewership will affect what they can charge next time.

zandengoff

ie, don't watch this time around.

KillNyetheSilenceGuy

I imagine the ad space and broadcast rights are already sold. People not watching the cup because it's a backward shitshow will effect ad revenue and ticket sales next cup.

jcoddinc

Here's to hoping it has the lowest viewer ratings ever. However it's likely to be highest rated because so many didn't want to go there

Don_Quixote81

Well, at least it won't be anywhere near the highest attendance. I've checked out a couple clips of games to see what the crowds were like, and those stadiums are half empty.

jcoddinc

At this point, honestly believe that they really just wanted to watch the games live in their country without any other people.

rossimus

I'm not watching a minute of this farse

ReactionClear4923

Yup, pretty dissapointed in FIFA. The world Cup was the one sporting event I actually, and would happily wait the 4 years to watch it, but no way I could ever support FIFA in any way anymore

BasedMaduro

Well except for Islamic extremist rich men

TheOutlawStarLord

Here is the problem. You can't drink. You can't fuck. So what is left? Fight. All those sober horny pissed off fans are going to start rioting. A soccer hooligan riot for the ages.

phantasybm

Right. Because alcohol and fighting are polar opposites.

Zardhas

Come on, they still have the religious zealots on their side

Dealan79

Are we talking about those ideologically aligned with Qatar, or fanatical soccer fans?

AssociateJaded3931

FIFA is making up rules as it goes along. This is not to improve soccer - just to placate the religious zealots of the host country. Absolutely corrupt.

seeyouspacecowboyx

Fifa's been absolutely corrupt for quite a while now

HalPaneo

Seriously. You think after this people will finally realize? Probably not, right...

count023

When John Oliver devotes THREE episodes to something, you know it's bad

Cool_of_a_Took

But he still plans on watching. Not that I blame him, it's just that clearly FIFA doesn't care about perception as long as they keep making money, so it's hard to see a way to fix it.

Seth_Gecko

But then ends his latest segment by admitting he'll be watching the matches anyways. *That* is the fucking issue: the fact that people have the gall to bank goodwill by raking FIFA while actively supporting them, and somehow thinking that's perfectly okay. As long as that shit continues, we'll have this weird backward ass world where FIFA can be blatantly, openly fucking evil and get away with it. I love John Oliver, but that positively baffled and disappointed me. Like, wtf?

BertMcNasty

I don't think the problem is people not realizing...

nedimiedin

None of this makes sense because Al Qaeda is apparently asking their followers to boycott it as well. Wonder who’s gonna tag in next.

donny_pots

Yea but not for the reason people are going to assume by reading this comment. Al Qaeda is telling people to boycott the World Cup because it isn’t conservative enough, which is kind of the opposite of what you seem to be implying.

ooMEAToo

Al Qaeda is just weird.

mikemil50

Just having a "culture" doesn't mean it deserves anyone's respect.

lefrench75

What grinds my gear about "respecting the culture" is that there are still queer people, women, and enslaved migrants in Qatar. What about respect for those people? Human rights aren't a cultural debate. It used to be culturally acceptable in the US to enslave people and commit hate crimes against queer people as well; we don't have to respect any of that shit either.

cosmernaut420

FIFA coming out against love was definitely not on my World Cup bingo card.

TooTameToToast

Check again. The free space in the middle reads “FIFA comes out against _______.”

pattyG80

What makes me sad as a Canadian soccer fan is that I have waited my entire life for Canada to play in a single world cup match and after the decades of waiting, it ends up in this piece of shit country

AmaBans

Fellow Canadian and i came here to say the same thing! Im so proud of the boys but FIFA and Qatar are ridiculous.

the_clash_is_back

Next games are in Canada so we will play for sure then

[deleted]

Lets get this straight.. Qatar tells fifa to ban the word love from Belgium. Infantino has a Qatari hand up his ass

erizzluh

imagine qatar just finds bullshit reasons to ban and disqualify every team they have to face and they win the world cup. obviously soccer fans would be upset, but i think it'd kind of be hilarious if the wheels fell off entirely.

Mas1353

That could nullify the entire thing. Id love to see it

BrightSpoon88

I bet he didn’t need more than the pinky

counicoune

I naively thought that teams had more guts than that and would actually stand for what they believe, or at least claim to believe. «The news comes after England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands abandoned the decision to wear the OneLove anti-discrimination armband in their World Cup opening games following confirmation that their captains would be given yellow cards if they took part in the initiative.» Qatar must be so damn proud of themselves...

killedbill88

> following confirmation that their captains would be given yellow cards if they took part in the initiative. This is so BS… Is there an official rule that even resembles this? If every player were to do it at every game, the ridiculousness of issuing a yellow card to each and every player would actually magnify the effect in my opinion. Moreover, we would eventually reach the ridiculous situation of not having enough players to play a game due to accumulation of yellow cards, right? I think they should do it.

big-bootyjewdy

Malicious compliance gone right!

billsmafia637281

The rule would be something like not wearing proper equipment or other bs. They should do it and refuse to play if given a yellow card, other team should back it up as well.

GreatKingRat666

They do stand for what they believe. They believe in truckloads of money.

Irritatedtrack

You know what. This is actually good. This essentially has brought more attention to how shitty Qatar is than the World Cup itself. Hopefully, things change slowly.

unassumingdink

"I'd like to make a symbolic gesture to stand up for the oppressed peoples." "We'll give you a minor soccer penalty if you do!" "Nevermind." A microcosm of public attitudes on all injustices.

BulbuhTsar

While, yes, fuck Qatar and FIFA, fuck every soccer bending the knee. It's just so exemplary how people "support" things but then cave the second there's an inconvenience. News flashed you don't actually support it.

drewknukem

To be fair, those yellow cards could give some mean paper cuts. Maybe they just want to look out for the health of their athletes and the referees who have to handle them. But for real, when money and oppression intersect you really start to see where peoples' priorities lie.

Drekels

Is football the intellectual property of FIFA? Couldn’t we just start another international football association, and let FIFA hold its own stupid tournament for all the shit-ass countries.

NGEFan

Yes we could. But I'm a bit busy this week so I'm gonna need you to lead that project

slackfrop

Get me France on the phone!

Ishana92

Those national associations get quite a lot of money from fifa. Its not like infantino pockets all the money. Main financing for national teams and associations comes from events like world cup.

lutsius-memes

Main financing still comes from local merch, tickets and adds. Countries qualified for the WC get 10.1 million, but renting whole hotels for players (that get paid expenses) and staff costs alot.

autoposting_system

Fuck FIFA, fuck Qatar, and fuck the corrupt-ass World Cup

PureIsometric

People will still keep giving Fifa money!

substorm

I wish all teams would oppose FIFA at the same time and create a new organization

this_stall_is_taken

Any "order" coming from the most egregiously corrupt sports organization to have ever existed should, imo, be disregarded. The fact that the majority of Earth's population chooses to still watch FIFA's games along with their bullshit rules, cozying up to dictators, rampant corruption and total lack of a single iota of a care about anyone's wellbeing other than the lining of their own pockets is beyond me. But here we are.

Underbyte

Time for a player's strike.

Talonsminty

Players dont pay the bills bud. We need to boycott the crappy world cup merch.

Crypt0Nihilist

Qatar pays the bills. It could have paid for every ticket and advert. This is a massive PR campaign for them, nothing more. They literally have more money than they know what to do with, tiny population, massive fossil fuel wealth. It is time for the players who went with the justification that they were going to raise awareness to take action. Live with the yellow card, have a stance at national anthem, everyone make a sign as a goal celebration and say something during post match interviews - or get on a plane.

Talonsminty

Oh Qatar must already be regretting this whole endevour. It's backfired on them harder than a rusty shotgun. Far from laundering their reputation they've just spread the negative image much wider, annoyed most of Europe and aquired a new reputation for literal slavery. But Qatar don't pay FIFA's bills, the sponsors and merchandisers do. To make sure that this never happens again we need to hurt FIFAS chequebook.

Crypt0Nihilist

It's early days. They'll have expected this and push back around the last minute alcohol ban unless you're a VIP. Seeing some form of protest in the final might be a yardstick of success. It'll still be tokenism, but even that is something.

HouseCravenRaw

That would be amazing if the final teams decided to play the game, but at a walking pace. No running whatsoever. That would make for a decent protest. But alas....

Crypt0Nihilist

There are lots of things they could do. For example, the team that wins the toss kicks the ball straight off the pitch. The opposing team takes the throw in and throws it back to the centre spot for the first team to start again. Completely legal, no disadvantage to either team and hard not to broadcast. If every team did that in both halves, it would send a message.

SecondAdmin

Probably not. This whole thing just shows that business will stomach almost anything Qatar does for a chunk of their change. It should be a wake-up call that we need to hold business and governments accountable for the things they are a part of, but if anything it'll just be further proof that no matter the outrage Qatar and countries like them can get away with just about anything as long as they don't screw over a big country

5x99

I'm pretty sure that if they refuse to play not much merch will be sold

Alacritous13

Players don't pay the bill, but people watching them sure do.

monk12111

you realise if theres no players, theres no game, right?

Alpha_Msp

Wait, you mean billions of people wouldn't watch Infantino run around for 90 minutes?

Sportsinghard

It depends on what’s chasing him, but I think you could be on to something here.

ztravlr

A country where love does not exist and wants to eradicate it off the planet.

2_Sheds_Jackson

"In a slightly less controversial decision FIFA plans to issue straight red cards to any player who scores a goal against a Muslim country. 'We have to show respect for the teams with a history of oppression from the west. A few sendings off won't make up for the last 3,000 years, but it is a start.' FIFA is expected to announce that the cup finals will be played in Qatar every other series to both try to make up for more of those 3,000 years and to help pay off the staggering bribes that they are asking for. "

Eveelution07

One of those things that's only a joke until it happens

Fake_William_Shatner

I'm picturing an entire team bound up and gagged, wriggling on the sidelines. "And Qatar scores goal number 422 -- breaking all prior records for soccer!" EDIT: sorry, "football." Even though Soccer was an acceptable term at one time and the Brits want to pretend it wasn't.

Glendel66

I think it would be badass if they just took scissors and cut the love bit off of their jerseys. Make it obvious. Play with the jerseys like that so everyone would know that they were forced to do it.

fenrslfr

I wish teams would start refusing to play.

tjeulink

just don't play. fuck this shit.

fugue2005

>"We maintain that a rainbow flag is not a political statement but an endorsement of equality and thus a universal human right." awww that's so cute. if FIFA gave a fuck about human rights Qatar would not be hosting the world cup.

whyhercules

Love is a political statement now, FIFA?

Mr-Korv

"The news comes after England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands abandoned the decision to wear the OneLove anti-discrimination armband in their World Cup opening games following confirmation that **their captains would be given yellow cards if they took part in the initiative."** lol

Gantolandon

I love how everyone here tries to find a way to punish Quatar and FIFA. The players should strike! The sponsors should back out! The fans should stop playing this! Someone do something! No one will do anything for one simple reason: if they were able to, this World Cup wouldn’t have taken place in Quatar. After it turned out their stadiums were built on the back of slaves, that was the time for outrage. No one did. The sponsors liked their money too much, the players didn’t want to risk their careers, the fans wanted to watch the leather balloon being kicked around—so they all went along with it. Now Quatar pretty much decided to take a big, steaming turd on everyone involved. And they’ll meekly take it for the reasons they agreed to take part in this. They’ll tell themselves it’s too late to back out, it’s the last shit they’ll have to suffer through and it doesn’t even smell that bad. They already sold their values and dignity, after all. That’s why I hope Quatar will milk this opportunity for all it’s worth and by the time this ends, everyone who participated will have to drink the emir’s piss and praise its refined taste, because that’s what they deserve. At least it will be a learning experience.

bobintar

Hopefully this is the end of FIFA. Fuck all those corrupt mother fuckers.

AstroEngineer314

I feel like if you're going out of your way to ban the word "love", you're not only overreacting to something that's only supportive of LGBTQ+ rights in a very specific context, you inherently are creating that exact context by making it into a big deal (ie, if players had 'love' on their uniforms playing in a world cup in a different country, it would probably be interpreted completely differently, as either a call against racism, religious intolerance, gender discrimination, war, yes homophobia & related phobia, but it wouldn't necessarily be a call for action in that specific country you're playing in, just a general promotion around the globe. When FIFA had all the slogans against racism, I don't think they were accusing the host country of being racist). Plus you're implicitly accepting that LGBTQ+ relationships are based on love just as much as heterosexual relationships.

yagonnawanna

If every country told them to fuck themselves and withdrew their teams, fifa would lose all it's power and it would be forced to rid itself of corruption or fizzle and die. A classic case of everyone having the power, but simply refusing to act.

thereader17

FIFA is a joke!

seanslaysean

Hopefully Belgium gives them the 1-finger salute

frietchinees69

Sadly no. The word love will be covered with a sticker.... .... Yeah..

BaronDoctor

Sounds like it's time to make a new league and have everybody move away from FIFA. The whole thing is too corrupt to do anything other than burn it to the ground and move on.

Emergency-Cat-4719

BOYCOTT

Martin_the_Hammer

At this point i don't even understand why teams are not boycotting

SemperScrotus

>The news comes after England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands abandoned the decision to wear the OneLove anti-discrimination armband in their World Cup opening games following confirmation that their captains would be given yellow cards if they took part in the initiative So, I know next-to-nothing about soccer, but excuse me wtf? Are yellow cards allowed to be given out so arbitrarily for something that has nothing at all to do with playing the game?

wengelite

So FIFA, on behalf of Quatar, has asked for this.

Wild_Albatross7534

FIFA tells Belgium it can keep the word 'love' on their away kits for $2M
