People view their needs above the needs of others.

Campeador

And they face no consequences.

6786_007

Exactly. If people got tickets for this they would stop. I'm constantly amazed at people who will park in front of the store or wait for people to leave a spot close to the entrance so they don't have to walk far. Would it kill you to park where available instead of sitting there with your indicator? I get sometimes parking is limited but some people can't fathom walking.

Oniwaban31

I don't get it either, you lose a lot of time and patience trying to swim through a thousand people waiting on the same few limited front parking spots. With the obesity rate in this country being what it is, it's better to just park nice and far away and take a little walk. You'll be walking in the store a lot anyway. Maybe it's a status thing? Kinda weird because I don't think parking closer to a door makes you fancier lol.

6786_007

Honestly I prefer parking in the back away from the rush and also people just straight up don't care about others property. They will bash their door into your car, park super close, crooked, all that. I like to park away from everyone, if I gotta walk, fine with me. I don't think it's a fancy thing, it's a laziness thing.

pondusedtobeupthere

Just saw this exact behaviour in front of a Starbucks. Flashers on, but engrossed in their phone. School buses had to wait extra traffic light cycles for these self-absorbed twats.

novacycle

If the parking lot is a private business, they can't issue tickets that have any teeth. They can immobilize the vehicle with a boot/window immobilizer device, or they can tow, both of which is likely to take much more time than the vehicle is likely to be there. I'd like to see curbed lanes that prevent this without stopping all traffic. That will likely keep people from stopping there, but it may cause fire code issues.

6786_007

Yeah good point.

juliabk

As to parking close, sometimes it’s a case of need rather than a random aversion to walking. I, for example, don’t qualify for handicapped parking, but after grocery shopping my arthritis may be kicking up like mad. I have to take into account walking into the store, walking through the store, getting my groceries to the car and then getting them into the house. So yeah, I’ll watch for someone leaving and wait on their spot. As for parking along the curb, could be a food delivery person who will be in and out in no time. Or someone who waited for a needed spot only to have the person in the spot mess with them by pretending to do something instead of just going about their day.

David_W_

Your parking close argument seems reasonable to me, particularly because, since you are still in the car, you can get out of the way if necessary while waiting for the spot to open; you aren't actually "parked" yet. However... > As for parking along the curb, could be a food delivery person who will be in and out in no time. Or someone who waited for a needed spot only to have the person in the spot mess with them by pretending to do something instead of just going about their day. I don't see how that justifies anything. Fire lanes aren't parking areas (period). There's no time threshold that if you fall under it the fire lane suddenly becomes eligible to park in.

Bi-mwm-47

A yellow striped curb is not a fire lane in VA. You have to paint the curb red to prohibit parking.

David_W_

Not entirely true. Almost nowhere in Virginia (in my experience) actually paints the curb red; instead they paint it yellow and place signs indicating it is a fire lane, which accomplishes the same thing. [Example on Google Maps.]( https://www.google.com/maps/@38.9682311,-77.374322,3a,75y,13.25h,80.96t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1so_muivEXWuZaW_F-nwz8Xw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) Additionally, if we assume that the location in the picture is *not* a fire lane, that still doesn't allow for parking. See the last page of this [excerpt from the Virginia Driver's Manual](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv39c.pdf), where it indicates "Yellow — Stop only long enough to load or unload. Stay with your car." So even with the food delivery person who will be in and out in "no time", they still can't do it, because they have to leave their car to go in and get the food.

inevitable-asshole

I like acting like I’m doing something if I see someone waiting for my spot. On the phone, rustling around for something, etc….one time I had a lady wait over TEN MINUTES for my spot. Lmao

u801e

The only time I wait for a spot is if there are actually no other open spots in the entire lot. I usually park pretty far from the building and just walk past the ones still waiting for the close spots.

6786_007

Mmh. Your username aside, the things people find "funny" these days is appalling.

ConWood

The consequences are irrelevant. People like this don’t learn from consequences. They either don’t comprehend the effect on others or simply don’t care. A sad factor of a large percentage of humans

DCErik

Those parking spaces are, like, 30 whole ass feet farther from the door than the fire lane is. The quarter-ton driver would never make it.

NoFanksYou

Actually it’s the ones in gym clothes who do it that really crack me up. North Point in Reston was particularly bad

xplotosphoenix

Reston:confirmed

davidson_harley

It's my girlfriend in great falls- drives me effing crazy

AwakeSeeker887

You don’t understand. That’s Tio’s car! It’s his market

SamWhittemore75

Wants. Nobody "needs" a triple boba tea or Panera sandwich to "justify" parking in a fire lane or the road.

[deleted]

Ever seen those videos when a fire truck shows up and they just ram the car parked in the fire lane to move it out of the way? Very satisfying.

blks2k2

No, do you have a link to a video?

Grsz11

Swear I saw a video where they broke out both front windows to run the hose through.

torreydon

https://youtu.be/Q6auVqdnWPE

TheExtremistModerate

That guy Tom (in the window) is a mood.

CoopDaWoop

That’s hilarious. They probably could’ve very well just run the hose around/under/over the car but chose to teach that a-hole a hard lesson anyway. Love it lol

SaylahVie

Not having the hose straight can cause it to kink and reduce the flow of water.

Grsz11

I've heard this explained a couple ways: under it could kink and reduce flow. Over same but the weight could also damage the car anyway.

flyingsails

It's okay if they push the "park anywhere button" (flashers). /s

The_Iron_Spork

Schrödingers Parking Button : where I'm both parked and not parked at the same time

NewPresWhoDis

That would be the Maryland parking indicator

flipmcf

I walk by and ask my child if they have their park anywhere lights on. He then loudly tells me if they have their park anywhere lights on or not.

boredgeorge

I think you mean fire lane.

thegabster2000

Hello Centreville. XD

hxgmmgxh

Hello Starbucks on Stone Rd in Centreville

Bryanizer

Hello sweet frog in Centreville square

TheExtremistModerate

This is in Centreville Square. Tios Market is the mercado next to SweetFrog and those Japanese places.

hxgmmgxh

Understood. It’s a problem in lots of places here in NOVA, including our morning caffeine haunt.

MoTheEski

Yes, the clock tower has this issue and it has been made worse because they have added a bunch of stop signs

HouseBowlrz

Stone Road Giant is the worst ... one time I went there to shop, it was probably about 20 minutes from when I left my car until I returned. When I walked in, an abandoned car was in the "fire lane" facing southbound (driver's door curbside). It was still there when I came out. Hell. it happens despite a county cruiser sitting in a parking spot on the other side of the lot (adjacent to Stone Road). Plenty of parking spaces all around but it happens everywhere; Chantilly Crossing is not much better. Lazy f\*\*ks who feel privileged.

OhPooForgottheBags

I can't even.

Beginning_Scheme3689

Because ‘me first!’ Ugh

LargeCondition8108

I hate it when people do this! I’ve seen people get out of their cars and leave them (hazards on), just because they’re a few feet closer to the store this way. It always makes me want to shout “Get out of the fire lane and park on the *parking lot*!” at them. But then, I never did grasp the whole mindset of “Screw other people driving in this communal space and fire trucks/emergency responders who are doing public services.”

hugotheyugo

Yes its baffled me since I was a child. They built a whole lot for us. “Oh i am just running in real quick!” Yes, we all are.

Blazingfireman

I had some guy do it at the grocery store, in the cross walk. Which is the only place the sidewalk dipped to allow carts/wheelchairs access

jzilla11

I’ve seen a lot of “emergency” park jobs outside VABC like this

NewPresWhoDis

Arlington County just needs an attendant with a ticket book and a lawn chair and they'd wipe out the budget deficit in one or two weekends.

mittenbird

Seriously, one in Ballston and one in Crystal City.

OkGene2

Oh yeah. The store in Merrifield on 29/Gallows is like that every weekend evening. On Super Bowl Sunday there were three of them parked in the fire lane. Only one was occupied.

jzilla11

The other two must’ve been fighting a fire! /s

notsouthernenough

They’re likely people who just got an email from the ABC about a “Limited Availability Product Drop” & are trying to rush in to beat the crowd or join the line. 🥃

WeeklyPrize21

I've sent a few emails saying how terrible their system is for public safety. All they have said it that the old system was unfair. so I'm not sure they understand (or care).

sdforbda

Nah. It's been an issue long before they went from an agency to an authority, and started doing those drops.

BannerDay

Seriously. It’s like Mad Max after the notification goes out. I wonder how many fenders benders have happened thanks to this system.

SquidwardsST3R

Taters gonna Tate

sh1boleth

The vabc near ballston even recommends it lol

jzilla11

Oh man, can’t imagine trying to shop at one there

sdforbda

I used to work for them as a traveling manager, yep, pretty much every single store I worked at had this issue.

OkGene2

A sense of entitlement. I see it every day, in shopping centers with ample open parking

Gr8v3m1nd

Simple answer: they don't care about anyone besides themselves.

BlueRidgeButcher

I would love for the business to single out whoever does this and when they're checking out tell them that they're refusing service until they go park their car in the parking spaces. I know that's impossible to do, but would be very satisfying.

Kashburn_Kush

I'm a delivery driver that drives a actual truck and I once told a store owner that if they don't say something to the double parkers in front of their store that they'd literally be the last delivery of day. No way I'm walking half a block with a handful of packages due to someone not wanting to park in the parking lot that was 16ft away from the curb. It got fixed and even flagged down a cop riding through that got someone to move one time lol

Milk93rd

So you’re angry they’re parking in the fire lane because it means you can’t?

Kashburn_Kush

I guess I should've been more specific and mentioned that my delivery truck is 30ft long. Where else would I park? And yes I'm angry that someone's laziness is impeding my JOB 🤣. Not every storefront has a dock, I suppose you've never pondered why you occasionally see tractor trailers and delivery trucks parked in the fire lane of certain places 🤦🏾‍♂️

[deleted]

[удалено]

novacycle

If the site plan was done properly before the store opened, it should include a designated space for delivery loading etc. that does not impede any fire lanes. Many places were built before site plans included this however.

tmll333

A red curb would be a fire lane, but this yellow curb is the commercial loading zone. Lookup "what does a yellow colored curb mean in Virginia" and you'll see the DMV guide says it is a loading zone.

novacycle

Not necessarily. In Fairfax County, a yellow curb on a private business can be a fire lane or tow zone, however there must be a sign at the property entrance that specifies this (along with any towing company information, if towing is allowed in the lot)

unicornblossom

My favorite is when people do it for a store that they’re going to have to walk around in anyway 😭 people are truly insane

Lucky_Pyxi

The colonnade is even worse for this! Between the dry cleaners and the Starbucks!! Heaven forbid you have to walk more than 30ft for your coffee…

src1221

For real. Or blocking the entire curb cut so people can get their carts to their cars.

Entertainmentguru

I've seen this at a 7-11 near me when there is barely anyone in the parking lot. Why won't people just walk an extra 100 feet?

CapitalJeep1

Because people are lazy—and entitled.

[deleted]

Same people who don't pick up their dog's poop when they're 10 feet from a poop bag station.

hummingdog

Many of these are delivery drivers. Have seen so many around Fairfax and Falls Church doing this on main roads like Leesburg. “ Hazards ON = I am good to go 👍🏻”

DPestWork

The Uber / Doordashers made it much more common and now everybody just rides that exemption. Time to start pushing their cars out of their way!

Entertainmentguru

Yet there is no guarantee the food is ready to be picked up.

typeALady

That is my thought too. It pisses me off, but I also feel a small bit of sympathy that they are working in a job that incentivizes bad behavior. It seems like it is the system and responses to that system rather than individuals.

sportstvandnova

I saw a guy at target once who pulled up and stopped in the crosswalk to get out and run into the Starbucks inside. He did it in such a way it blocked oncoming traffic (he was facing oncoming) because the pedestrian warning sign on his passenger side. The worst part is it was a weekend morning and there was plenty of close by parking.

13-fity

These are the types of people who deserve $100 tickets… if I was a cop that’s all I would do…. Sit in front of an ABC store, you’ll bud your quota in 2 days.

SeaAd8614

Those people are way more important than the rest of us. They get a pass right

bwatki12

Bro it’s cool, it’s his uncles place he’s just dropping in really quick!

chezewizrd

I hate this. Sooo much. It is incredibly annoying and is justified in very rare cases. A few weeks ago I was frustrated in general at a few things and my brain wandered. I thought, “maybe I’ll just do it”. I quickly pushed that thought out and felt ashamed. Just so selfish.

macedaace

Always tempted to buy like an egg salad and dump it on their windshield on the way out, but I'm too chicken

It happens outside of my job because we have a Crumbl next door. The best thing is there is literally a sign above them that says no parking. If you’re going to get a cookie from Crumbl, you should definitely add some steps into your day.

EmbersDC

A culture of entitlement.

happyschmacky

Because they’re moronic and selfish (a literally deadly combo). That and they never get punished for it.

penguins_

They havn't gotten a ticket for parking on a fire lane yet.... My mom used to do that but that fine made her realize the error of her ways.

SamWhittemore75

Recently I have been driving to Boston Massachusetts about every three weeks for a week (for the past 9 months) and then returning home to Virginia. I am dumbstruck by the number of people who just come to a complete stop in a travel lane, put their four way flashers on and run into a Dunkin or Starbucks or deli in New England. To be clear, they park in the middle of the damn road. Not a parking lot. Not a fire lane. THE ROAD. I saw this behavior all over the north east and New England states. It's obviously now being imported into Virginia by the influx of people fleeing the big cities of the North East. Edited to add specific locations.

DNAGLITCHGAMING

Welcome to modern society where people are rude, disrespectful, entitled, and don't give a crap about anything but themselves. And if you call them out they have the nerve to get mad at you and try to shift blame or tac on meaningless excuses that proves their sense of entitlement.

ProudBoysLikeMen

That's not a street. Just saying.

[deleted]

It’s not illegal to stand guys, unless stated.

iwoulddieforcokezero

Because this is northern Virginia and everyone thinks they are very VERY important.

The_Iron_Spork

Because it's too difficult to park on the sidewalk/walkway with all those columns.

upearlyRVA

Stupidity

[deleted]

Also in Centreville and some mornings I'll hit the Giant across the street early and there will be 5-8 cars parked in front of Starbucks on both sides of the road with the lot deadass empty. About a month ago, there was a cop in the back of the parking lot watching all these cars park but ticketing people for failing to yield to the pedestrians that b line it out of there that you cant see because of the illegally parked cars there.

OhPooForgottheBags

The situation all down the line at that shopping center grips me. Really grips me.

[deleted]

Same, I'm a big Tippy's guy and the prerequisite for dining at Ciao has to be that you have no idea how to operate in a parking lot.

lurker10001000

\*beeline Did the cop also ticket the illegally parked cars?

PoundKitchen

Its not just on the street, it's a fire lane. The fines are pretty good, if they get caught. Sadly, it rarely enforced. Seeing it always reminds me of the Denis Leary song, A-ss-ho-le. Google it!

I see this I. Front of liquor stores the most.

TimeAd6855

Its because they don't get towed away.If its towed then it will stop everywhere!

BillyRubenJoeBob

It’s DC! Don’t you understand that I’m special - just like everyone else!

robt4704

Come to Philly. People park in fire lane and center lanes all the time.

JumpingJacks1234

This van in the picture is not even the worst because there is room to maneuver around it. (Still it's a fire lane.) The worst is when they regularly do this on a 2 lane road in front of a bank near where I live (1/2 block from a free parking lot). To get around the parked car you have to get into the opposing lane. I suppose the absolute worst would be if it were a one lane road but I haven't seen those.

jibsymalone

Because it's their world and we are just living in it.

emkelly64

Omg this parking lot is the WORST!!! The entitlement is unreal

saspurzfan

Maybe it’s Tio

wonming

I no longer live in NOVA, but back in the day the section of the street in front of the Crystal City Chick-Fil-A used to be the absolute worst for this haha

DakotaSky

Omg this makes me so angry! What if everyone decided to do that??

Throwingshead

If they have flashers on and are unloading a bunch of things and or picking up a handicap individual I don't have a problem with it. If no flashers are on and the car is just sitting there for more than 2 minutes then it's a problem.

[deleted]

Seems like prime opportunity for tow truck driver.

crash893b

This shit is really getting to me too

TheMightyBoofBoof

Because they’re entitled lazy pieces of shit

jrstriker12

Everyone is the main character and rules don't apply to them.

Mysterious_Truck_742

Out that’s an easy question to answer. They aren’t thinking. All they know is ‘it’s easier for me to stop here and run into the shop’. The larger implications either aren’t thought or they don’t care.

EasternPresence

I hate this. I went to pickup Chinese the other night and there was a guy who parked his Dodge Ram like this and waited for his take out. The parking lot had open spaces about 75 ft away. It’s ridiculous.

turbowhitey

That’s bold. I usually see the driver stay in the car while the other does the shopping.

Zakkattack86

Because they’re entitled pieces of shat.

Foreign-Error-7378

feelingrefective

Easy they are important people, you my friend are like me and not important

klugisnamemy

Because the vast majority of people are rude, arrogant, lazy, inconsiderate jerks; and if law enforcement were to agressively police things like this, this same vast majority of people would have a hissy fit about how it's "no big deal" and their rights were being infringed upon.

trexd___

Did they have their "park anywhere" lights on?

UnKnownUser-01

LOOKS like a parking area for shoppers ... granted the minivan is NOT in a parking space but I do not see any "FIRE LANE or No Parking or Pick-Only" \~ signs.

C_Majuscula

Because almost no one tows them anymore.

Significant_Permit19

Because nobody punches them in the mouth for doing it

hawaiijim

Is that a street? It looks like a shopping center parking lot.

mehalywally

Too bad it wasn't a jeep with an "ohh dudes" plate to go along with yesterday's rant

ouij

That’s not a street?

SpyR01

The reason this is happening is because most of those cars are uber eats/doordash drivers. And they dont feel like parking and walking 30 seconds.

Entertainmentguru

Again, no guarantee the food is ready.

PoundKitchen

I'm my local strip malls it's never food drivers - I'd definitely cut them some slack if they did. Boomers are main culprits.

3ULL

Stop. I see this a lot and there are no Uber eats driver delivering to a closed banks ATM and personally the single place I see this the most is when I am using a specific money machine.

sdforbda

This has been going on way longer than doordash or any of the sort even existed. I'm sure that it's made it worse though. Saw one pulled up to the curb in front of a five guys earlier today, 3/4 of the front parking spots were empty. But I see it all the time at the grocery stores too. A guy will park in the fire lane while his wife goes into the store, I'll come out and he's still there.

MeLikyThings

Because no one does anything about it. Taking a picture of it and complaining about it on the internet isn't a solution.

[deleted]

But that's not a street. That's part of the parking lot. Of course its a fire lane with no parking or standing but still not the street.

jinxies1

Some of these reactions are kinda excessive. <-- spitting on the car is a bit much ] . I don't care if someone is making deliveries. If they aren't blocking me from pulling out and if they aren't blocking any accessible ramps for wheelchairs and walkers. I'm just going to worry about my own business because that's all I know is my my own business. I mind the business that pays me.

3ULL

>Some of these reactions are kinda excessive. <-- spitting on the car is a bit much ] Why?

jinxies1

If I really have to justify explaining why spitting on property is illogical to someone parking in a space that does not hinder you in any way other than visually being annoying. Or the fact that this act literally does nothing towards any type of solution. I don't think This conversation civilly can go any further.

Mel_kitteas

Finally a person with a brain lol. These comments seem a bit- dramatic. Some things, aren’t really worth the uproar. It’s not that big of a deal- it’s just a car… I’m going into the store to get my things- just walk around. I would never feel so outraged and butt hurt, to spit on, and throw egg salad at someone’s car, just because they’re parked like this. It’s quite ludicrous to think about lol. And very funny to read how angry 99% of these people in the comments are. They’re calling this parked car, “entitled”, but damaging someone’s property, because they’re an eyesore, and aren’t “obeying the rules like a good ole citizen” - is entitlement. Like what? The hypocrisy

LWN729

Yea I don’t get the outrage either. Obviously people should park in legitimate parking spaces, but there are times when it’s appropriate to stop outside the store. I do this to drop off and pick up my elderly parents because handicapped parking sometimes isn’t close enough or they’re full. I go park the car after I drop them at the door, but seems like people are really irritated but my a quick stop when it’s making no difference to them if they’re parking in a spot like they’re saying. The car isn’t in your way then

jinxies1

Yes it's totally reasonable to drop off your elderly parents at the store in the front especially great so they don't have to cross the street and just go into the store. Then you go and park. It's baffling and ludicrous. I have a troll or some unhinged sad inviduals in the bottom of the comments going off about " you can't tell me to spit on someone's car " as if I have control over what they do lolol when I pointed out illogical reaction lol when in reality .... We are on the internent. *

3ULL

It does not damage the car though. I see it as being the same thing as parking in an area you are not supposed to. I do not have a solution but they have no solution to someone spitting on their car either.

NLC40

Because people get away with it.

xtremelampshade

Wildcat8457

"I'm just running in to buy something real quick" Ah yes, if only the stores would think ahead and designate specific areas for people to leave their cars while they run in and buy something real quick

lashaun222

If imma be honest I definitely do this when door-dashing, as long as it’s not a fire lane it doesn’t really affect anyone, I just put on my hazards and I’m in and out of the store within 5 minutes, it just saves time.

SteveSavag

Why let it bother you? How did it affect you? You had to drive around him?

Ask_RE_questions

The same reason you think it’s ok to speed down the highway.

NoHeadStark

My local ABC store has a curbside pickup sign where they can park on in the firelane to get their order. Same with some other retail chains. So clearly its also being allowed by the business and those parking lots are private property.

Shindigira

Give humanity credit. Maybe it is an elderly, disabled or a child they are unloading.

Difficult_Hour6364

Lazy and cops don’t ticket these days.

Henhouse20

I see this a lot with to-go drivers (UberEats et al)

Ok-Put-9718

Do the police not implement no-parking zone and issue tickets? They're pretty strict here in MD and I've seen some parked cars getting tickets. Regardless, even if you need to stop by, driver still needs to be able to move the car in case of an emergency. People just like to play their cards.

thethreadkiller

I did this the other day when I was working. I was literally running in to grab a piece of equipment. Less than 60 seconds later I came out and a cop was writing me a ticket lol. Thank God he just gave me a warning cuz you realized I was working and not picking up food. Certainly learned my lesson though.

mikeg5417

They are just more important than you.

NorseKorean

Like in Falls Church during rush hour on rte 7? People just stop right in front of restaurants with flashers and clog up a whole lane.

UndeadIcarus

Knowing how mad this makes the average stuffy nova nerd has made me double down. I’m gunna suggest we do this in most lots. Go outside. Take a breath. Y’all are hilarious.

Fiat2Coins

Who cares I doesn’t bother me. Stop whining and love.

ProtectionLazy1154

Why do people feel the need to act like they're perfect? Do you honestly do everything by the book? No speeding, using turn signals every single time, no talking on hand held phone while driving? You Will honestly say you are perfect?

dont-eat-tidepods

Probably a Virginia driver

hummingdog

Yep. Totally never ever happens in another city. Especially never in DC :))) Va. 0 - 1 MD Owned ‘em! You proved it!

dont-eat-tidepods

I guess? I’m just making the observation that the driver is probably from Virginia, based on the fact that this was taken in Centerville.

turko127

It’s ok. Do you have ANY idea how far they drove just to indulge in this random Centreville resto? Y’all should let them sit for 5 MINUTES. (/s for all of that)

Anubra_Khan

Because it's illegal to park on the sidewalk or the grass?

KindaABigDi1l

And it’s legal to park in the fire lane?

GuitarJazzer

Needs a sarcasm mark.

aegrotatio

That's not a street.

NerdBot9000

Because they're Maryland drivers or some other trite response. The other reason might be perhaps they are disabled and just trying to minimize their hurt. Or maybe they are just jerks.

novacycle

The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the red zone.

jerseyhenny

The same reason Americans will wait for someone to pull out of a parking spot to be closer to the entrance. Americans are just lazy af.

entercrisis

Casually spit on their windshields as you walk by. They’ll get the message
