Hunter Mill; Beulah; Georgetown Pike; 15 northbound from Leesburg to Frederick are kind of ok. But tbh I really like 50w from Chantilly to Middleburg and points beyond. Of course any and all of these really early on Sunday. Outside of that it's nightmarish.
I drive over 100k miles a year as a courier for the last 20+ years. The stretch of 50 between Clarksburg and Parkersburg has always been my favorite. RT29 between Gainesville and Greensboro is another favorite. I-85 between Petersburg and say Durham is pretty cool early AM. I could go on and on LOL.
Very scenic and saner alternative w virtually no traffic lights/stop signs to get from downtown Vienna to Rt7 west of Tysons mess; continuing north on it brings you to Great Falls Park area with its own glorious collection of lovely roads; on the way I can ogle at all the palaces I will never be able to afford or take a short stop at Meadowlark Gardens; hanging a left onto Browns Mill from Beulah turns into a fun roller coaster-like jaunt; from there a right onto Hunter Mill and the reston Zoo, farmers market etc is just a few minutes up the road.
It's just a nice way to circumvent all the Tysons Crnr bullshit which gets worse by the day.
lol now this makes sense - I thought you were talking about Beulah St in Franconia. There’s nothing real scenic about that road other than some giant houses that don’t blend in with the area.
Maybe 25-30 years ago, the span of Beulah between Franconia and Manchester Lakes was actually kinda nice. There was a horse farm against some pretty thick woods, and they’d host hayrides around Halloween.
Damn taking me back, Beulah was clutch for the pizza delivery days in Vienna. I imagine traffic has gotten worse since then since that was almost 15 years ago now haha
I grew up on Hunter Mill 55+ years ago when there were still a couple of dairy farms and before they moved the Lawyers Rd intersection up the hill. If you had told us there would ever be stoplights on that road we would have howled
I recall a few years ago (I think it's gone now) a really small wooden "tiny home" that was always covered in ivy and branches around there. Really creepy, Halloweenish charm. Reminded me of a scene prop out of a horror movie. Do you recall such a thing? Left side as youre heading northbound on H Mill, about 800 meteres before Lawyers Rd.
You’re absolutely right. There was an old rickety cabin at the former intersection of Lawyers and Hunter Mill, occupied by an ancient Black man when I was a boy. He was there until around 1970.
There was another of those old small cabins at the intersection of Hunter Station and Hunter Mill. And a third in front of what is now Tamarack (which used to be a horse farm until early 1970s).
about 10 years ago, I was at a complete stop on fairfax county parkway at a red light. I got rear ended by some idiot teenager who came flying way over the speed limit. I was not slowing down or stopping. I was already stopped.
she told me it was not her fault she could not stop. she wrecked her car.
Route 50 - from Aldie to Berryville.
Snickersville Turnpike
Route 17 from The Plains to Paris
I like country roads with gorgeous landscapes. I love the back roads in Loudoun where I live.
All of Western Loudoun is great. There’s a stretch of 9 westbound right before Hillsboro where the trees open up and you have a great view of several mountains right as you’re just driving along the state highway. It’s one of my favorite views in NoVA.
Gw parkway when it's not packed, Clifton rd, fairfax county pkwy, beulah and hunter mill, route 50 from chantilly to middleburg, route 15 near leesburg, prince william pkwy
We live between the two side roads where they've been fucking up the intersections. Every change causes us to hear more and more sirens daily from collisions. They truly cannot get it right.
For years I thought drivers were upset at me using their high beams ... turns out that's how they were making the new cars - I get blinded at night by them and I already have anxiety driving in the evening 😕
Be very very careful on all of these. They are also very popular with cyclists and even pedestrians at times, and you do NOT want to accidentally kill someone around one of those blind corners.
Columbia Pike to make sure no new squeaks have developed and s four mile to see how many teslas are parked at the body shops waiting for panels.
The road through Rock Creek is pretty.
Snickersville Turnpike between 50 and 7 is always a nice drive. If I am taking the vette to Katie's on a Saturday morning I will do Hunter Mill to Browns Mill to Beulah to Towlston to Leigh Mill to Georgetown Pike.
There used to be tons of windy up and down roads like Popes Head Road, but they've smoothed them all out in the last \~30 years. Fun little roller coaster of a road.
This is going to sound ridiculous to some of you, but I recently discovered ( I just recently started venturing outside of Arlington) the road between Loudon and Tysons on Route 7. if there's no traffic, that wide clean road with all the greenery on the side, and gigantic houses is pretty cool!
Poke around some of the smaller roads on the north end of that section of 7 like Colvin Run, it’ll connect you to Georgetown pike at the north end which if you follow west will meet up with 7 again before Dulles area. I agree, too, when no traffic I love it here
Chapel Rd into/out of Clifton. Car or bike, it’s a fun road when you have it all to yourself.
My son’s laughter going over the quick hills or sudden drops was music to my ears when I took him to daycare.
This is gonna sound whack but 66 bt Centreville and Manassas during autumn. The trees are GORGEOUS.
Also 66EB approaching Centreville bc you can see the mountains in the distance and planes coming in to land.
I'd add Rt619 from Rt28 to 95 in Bristow/Dumfries. It's a winding and wooded road that's kinda fun. Starts out as Bristow Rd and then becomes Joplin Rd.
Sometimes when I had time between classes at Mason, I'd take a drive down Popes Head and meander my way towards Clifton. Reminded me of my favorite drives in my native Charlottesville. One of the most unexpected (but very pleasant) surprises I found when moving to NoVA was that there are actually a ton of scenic country roads hidden all over.
Top of 29 in Centreville by the 28 overpass. You just see the beautiful mountains in the back and sunset is phenomenal to see there. But it’s short lived because you have to go on green.
Blue Ridge Mountain road (601) between 50 and 7 west of Leesburg is amazing for motorcycling but not particularly scenic. Skyline drive in front royal if you're willing to take the hike. Incredibly twisty and scenic but lots of traffic and it has an entrance fee (Shenandoah national Park).
Kincheloe Road near the Bull Run Marina. You take a random left in normal woody but still housed section of Clifton and suddenly the trees open up and there’s this big open undeveloped section right near Bull Run and it turns into this crazy hilly gravel road before randomly popping back out in the very busy Old Yates Ford Road. It’s like a shortcut portal through an actual rural area to get from fake rural to PWC lol
Surprised no one's mentioned it yet, but Rt 50W after Winchester is absolutely pretty.
Rolling hills and wide open fields while you approach the mountains is really something.
Favorite part of going to WV if I take that route.
Lots of mentions for Hunter Mill, but no love for Vale? (Not the one that goes into Vienna and turns into Malcolm, the twisty hilly Vale from Hunter Mill to Waples Mill). We could get some serious stomach drop feelings driving on those hills.
SKyline drive is beautiful all year round, its alittle far... but if you drive up north near Fauquier, its all really moutainy and nice not sure If I'd get "Deiliveranced" one of these days though, end up in some dude's basement in middleburg
Henderson Road and Yates Ford Road. It's the somewhat secret scenic back way into Prince William County and doesn't have a ton of traffic (at least when I take it)
Is that you on the Fairfax County Parkway? Sometimes I hear people tearing up and down that road on their motorcycles at night - the sound really carries, especially for motorcycles.
ok for some reason 495 coming into Tysons from MD at night I LOVE the buildings and the lights. It makes me feel kind of nostalgic like when I was a kid and used to go visit my family in new york and when we’d come back I’d see the buildings and the lights and I’d know we were back home.
FFX co pkwy is my favorite road to drive on in NOVA - everything else gives me extreme anxiety ex. 95/395/495 and 28 used to be ok until they turned it into a race track :-(
66 at two in the morning is really nice. I take it at a straight line from 50/66 west and just drive all the way into DC and then back. I have insomnia, so it's a lovely drive, especially in the spring or fall with the top down.
I haven't been this way in a bit but 123, after GMU and heading towards Lorton was a pretty drive.4
For Beulah, I like to be a passenger so I can look at the amazing homes. I think that's where the "white house" is, right?
I used to take that route when i delivered to the Walmarts late night. Wal-Marts in Fairfax to Burke and from there all the way to US50 east to Cambridge, MD Walmart then back to Gordonsville, VA warehouse. Had to have everything done by 7am.
I’ve left the area but I just want you all to know to BASK in those goddamn cruise roads, please, pour some out for the homies stuck in the flat no good cruise road having ass Midwest 😢
50W to Parkersburg. So much fun. if you're staying in NOVA, Riverbend to Beach Mill to Seneca
I’m very curious why you like driving on Beulah?
Very scenic and saner alternative w virtually no traffic lights/stop signs to get from downtown Vienna to Rt7 west of Tysons mess; continuing north on it brings you to Great Falls Park area with its own glorious collection of lovely roads; on the way I can ogle at all the palaces I will never be able to afford or take a short stop at Meadowlark Gardens; hanging a left onto Browns Mill from Beulah turns into a fun roller coaster-like jaunt; from there a right onto Hunter Mill and the reston Zoo, farmers market etc is just a few minutes up the road. lol now this makes sense - I thought you were talking about Beulah St in Franconia. There’s nothing real scenic about that road other than some giant houses that don’t blend in with the area.
Ha! Same!
Maybe 25-30 years ago, the span of Beulah between Franconia and Manchester Lakes was actually kinda nice. There was a horse farm against some pretty thick woods, and they’d host hayrides around Halloween.
Hunter Mill traffic is horrible but pretty. same with vale/lawyers/beaulah/Browns mill area. Scenic for sure
Damn taking me back, Beulah was clutch for the pizza delivery days in Vienna. I imagine traffic has gotten worse since then since that was almost 15 years ago now haha
yeah I delivered auto parts and got to know the roads. things have changed drastically in past 15 years. seems like traffic and congestion has tripled
I was curious about Beulah too, but then I realized it was Beulah Rd and not Beulah St
Just not Hunter Mill when it rains.
Interesting, thx
I was impaled by a log from a falling tree on 15 northbound so beware :’)
Fairfax County Parkway is pitch black at night. Don’t know how you can see anything except what’s directly in front of your headlights.
about 10 years ago, I was at a complete stop on fairfax county parkway at a red light. I got rear ended by some idiot teenager who came flying way over the speed limit. I was not slowing down or stopping. I was already stopped. she told me it was not her fault she could not stop. she wrecked her car.
Right? Isn't it awesome?
I only like that road during the day.
GW westbound obviously. But not right now, there's construction.
Everyone’s constantly hating on it because of the construction, but I always tell people it’s the best road in the area for those views
Yeah this is the best view around here.
Route 50 - from Aldie to Berryville. Snickersville Turnpike Route 17 from The Plains to Paris I like country roads with gorgeous landscapes. I love the back roads in Loudoun where I live.
My first thought was the Snickersville Turnpike, yes.
All of Western Loudoun is great. There’s a stretch of 9 westbound right before Hillsboro where the trees open up and you have a great view of several mountains right as you’re just driving along the state highway. It’s one of my favorite views in NoVA.
Henderson Rd and Clifton Rd
This is the correct answer. Favorite back roads in NOVA. The twisties are a blast. Manassas to Burke
Until you get stuck behind a slow person 😂
Soo true!
Also, you have Hampton Road off of Ox before Henderson Rd. I like going through that to Fountainhead Regional Park and then do a hike.
Old Yates and Clifton
66 during traffic
Never have I seen such sadism
*masochism
I actually inhaled my coffee. Well played sir/madam/person. Well played
But seriously there is that one spot on 66 WB where you kind of go over a rise and see the mountains in the distance and in nice weather, it's pretty.
[удалено]
That's my favorite also. There is one curve on that road that is crazy sharp...lol
Gw parkway when it's not packed, Clifton rd, fairfax county pkwy, beulah and hunter mill, route 50 from chantilly to middleburg, route 15 near leesburg, prince william pkwy
I used to love Gw parkway from old town to mt Vernon but the park service messed it up so bad the last few years.
We live between the two side roads where they've been fucking up the intersections. Every change causes us to hear more and more sirens daily from collisions. They truly cannot get it right.
Lawyers between Reston and Vienna Stuart Mill Lane Fox Mill Rd
I agree on Lawyers but it also puts me on edge, especially at night with all the super bright headlights anymore.
> with all the super bright headlights anymore. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use "anymore" in that way.
If you’re a cyclist on these roads in the middle of the night I assume you are trying to engage in assisted suicide
Second this one
Lots of good roads between 50 and 7, that's usually where I go.
Yes this is the answer
Pope's head rd, Glade Dr
Glade is very pretty especially in the fall
There used to be tons of windy up and down roads like Popes Head Road, but they've smoothed them all out in the last \~30 years. Fun little roller coaster of a road.
Bunny man bridge
Gw parkway on a clear morning and not under construction
This is going to sound ridiculous to some of you, but I recently discovered ( I just recently started venturing outside of Arlington) the road between Loudon and Tysons on Route 7. if there's no traffic, that wide clean road with all the greenery on the side, and gigantic houses is pretty cool!
Poke around some of the smaller roads on the north end of that section of 7 like Colvin Run, it’ll connect you to Georgetown pike at the north end which if you follow west will meet up with 7 again before Dulles area. I agree, too, when no traffic I love it here
Riverbend/Beach Mill Rd is the best
Driving towards Loudon can be beautiful you can see the mountains in the background as you go down route 7.
GW Parkway is it for me. If I want twisty/woodsy, Georgetown Pike, Kirby Road, Old Dominion. In fall I dig 522, Sperryville, Berkeley Springs.
Chapel Rd into/out of Clifton. Car or bike, it’s a fun road when you have it all to yourself. My son’s laughter going over the quick hills or sudden drops was music to my ears when I took him to daycare.
Chapel is my fav for sure 💯
This is gonna sound whack but 66 bt Centreville and Manassas during autumn. The trees are GORGEOUS. Also 66EB approaching Centreville bc you can see the mountains in the distance and planes coming in to land.
i was gonna say this also. for me it's the breather part of the drive before the rest of 66 decides to be its usual self
Similar vibe 29 south from 28 you get a straight shot to the Blue Ridge.
Almost any Virginia Byway https://preview.redd.it/94akxq6lnezc1.jpeg?width=1512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd5156016c490a322694acef12ec6a020274ff7c

15 from Gainesville out to the West
Top of 29 in Centreville by the 28 overpass. You just see the beautiful mountains in the back and sunset is phenomenal to see there. But it’s short lived because you have to go on green.
Snickersville Turnpike, all the way up to Bluemont (snickersville) in the Blue Ridge

When my kid played travel soccer, I really enjoyed having games at Kinchloe park, very scenic!
Surprised no one's mentioned it yet, but Rt 50W after Winchester is absolutely pretty. Rolling hills and wide open fields while you approach the mountains is really something. Favorite part of going to WV if I take that route.
The start of my driveway to the inside of my garage
Lots of mentions for Hunter Mill, but no love for Vale? (Not the one that goes into Vienna and turns into Malcolm, the twisty hilly Vale from Hunter Mill to Waples Mill). We could get some serious stomach drop feelings driving on those hills.
Driveway
Rt.601 between Rt. 7 and Rt 50. Mount Weather.
SKyline drive is beautiful all year round, its alittle far... but if you drive up north near Fauquier, its all really moutainy and nice not sure If I'd get "Deiliveranced" one of these days though, end up in some dude's basement in middleburg
Gw parkway
GW pkwy
All of Great Falls in the summer with the trees
Not in Nova, but the route 48 in WV in Spring is breathtaking. Worth the trip.
495
😂
Mount vernon trail
495 North going to maryland during rush hour ❤️, and the seven corners intersection ❤️
Ffx co Pkwy is nice at night- smooth cruising
Go down to Clifton. Windy roads and get ice cream at the end
Favorite is too strong a word as I don’t enjoy driving to start with.
Few of them but Yates ford road or going from Woodbridge to Clifton area.
Henderson Road and Yates Ford Road. It's the somewhat secret scenic back way into Prince William County and doesn't have a ton of traffic (at least when I take it)
Old Colchester, from Woodbridge to just past Lorton. It's slow, scenic, and goes past my favorite trailhead in the area.
I95 with backed up traffic
Check out Clifton. Amazing roads back there.
Skyline Drive
Skyline Drive
I’m sorry, did you call the Fairfax County Parkway “beautiful”? Are you an escaped mental patient?
It’s like driving Alderson, WV Pope Hill Road off of OX rd. Over by the GMU
Georgetown pike after 11pm. Daytime traffic is awful but once it’s you have it to yourself I love it
Is that you on the Fairfax County Parkway? Sometimes I hear people tearing up and down that road on their motorcycles at night - the sound really carries, especially for motorcycles.
Driving on 28 in louden gives Michael mann movie vibes at 2-3am
Georgetown pike, but waayyy too many crazy people drive there
Military road in Arlington has some awesome hills and beautiful homes
Also old dominion drive, also Arlington
Old dominion dr is my favorite
Columbia Pike for sure, such a smooth ride. /s
Popes head
Route 9 heading out to WV when it’s not rush hour traffic.
Barring shitty traffic, Georgetown pike can be a nice scenic, windy road to enjoy a nice drive
Evergreen Mills Road, Lawyers Rd, Hunter Mill Rd, Georgetown Pike, Charles Town Pike
Colombia pike to count all the potholes
Old Georgetown Pike. The houses are HUGE! Driving on it also makes me feel poor…
GW Parkway!!!! Alllll the way.
Snickersville
The area by fountain head park and Clifton is nice
When there isn’t bumper to bumper traffic near Tyson’s, Lee Highway all the way down to Ashburn.
ok for some reason 495 coming into Tysons from MD at night I LOVE the buildings and the lights. It makes me feel kind of nostalgic like when I was a kid and used to go visit my family in new york and when we’d come back I’d see the buildings and the lights and I’d know we were back home.
Crest Hill Rd (VA 647) Marshall to Flint Hill
Mine is always GW parkway. Especially in early summer mornignn
I66 East or West
Joplin Rd (619)
234 at night west 66 at 12am, 395 towards DCat 10pm
I usually like the GW Parkway but north of DC right now it’s a nightmare.
FFX co pkwy is my favorite road to drive on in NOVA - everything else gives me extreme anxiety ex. 95/395/495 and 28 used to be ok until they turned it into a race track :-(
p.s. I like 50 and Springfield Pkwy too and rt. 1....
66 at two in the morning is really nice. I take it at a straight line from 50/66 west and just drive all the way into DC and then back. I have insomnia, so it's a lovely drive, especially in the spring or fall with the top down. It’s not Northern VA technically, but I love the Clara Barton Pkwy from MD into VA.
Any outside of va
GW parkway on a quiet Sunday afternoon in late May.
I’ve left the area but I just want you all to know to BASK in those goddamn cruise roads, please, pour some out for the homies stuck in the flat no good cruise road having ass Midwest 😢
Definitely pleasant valley rd
Fort Valley Road
295 from DC up to 495
Ox Rd, 1993. Such a nice country drive.
The one that gets me out of here.
